Just a few random thoughts: 1) Last year for Halloween I did shave my head. I had thought about it for awhile but I had just got Blind Dogs and it was like an omen, so I did it. I didn't need a costume, all my friends where were very suprised. This year I'm sticking with a Soundgarden-y theme. I'm going as Jesus Christ, complete with the crown of thorns (a real one!) and lots of blood (not real, not wine either). Now if anyone starts up the debate again about who looks more like Jesus (Chris or Kim) . . . My vote is for the "Kim" Jesus . . . 2) These lyrics She lived like a murder how she'd fly so sweetly, she lived like a murder but she dies just like suicide * A pack of crows is a "murder" * A nice contrast is made between many "murder" and the singlarity of suicide 3) A Clockwork Orange I've read it . . . the nadsat slang really can lose you in this novel. Read carefully if you do . . . and remember if BUTOW does follow Clockwork after Alex gets desensitized (better word?) he realizes he was being foolish and settles down to raise a family . . . does this mean Chris is going to settle down and raise a (!) . . . Don't count on it. Some guy named Mayor McCheese that your brother's favorite band claims to worship. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 10:28:39 -0600 From: William Flanders Subject: Re: Random Thoughts > * A pack of crows is a "murder" > * A nice contrast is made between many "murder" and the >singlarity of suicide I'm not sure whether this is a coincidence or not. But if it isn't... that is completely awesome! And it's been so long since I took the SAT that I had forgotten that a murder was a pack of crows. I mean, if that was intended, that is such rhetorical genius. Bill ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 09:04:35 -0800 From: "S. This from a radio interview last June with Matt Pinfield: CC: "Blow Up the Outside World-- it's not what you'd think of it. It's not this militant song of where I'm suggesting, you know, blow things up. We've talked to people who thought that it had something to do with the Oklahoma City bombing. We talked to someone that thought it had something to do with the dehumanization of society through the computer generation. And think, you know, it's...why don't you just reel it in... I mean, all it really is is just a reclusive song about a couple of people forgetting everything else and just getting into what they're doing. You know, it's kinda, it's more benign in a way than people wanna take it. Everyone kinda wants to think that in music everything is like this grand cultural statement and-- music is just music. It can be personal and people can take it personally but it's just music. We're not trying to get you to vote Republican or whatever, it's just making music." Thought you all might find that interesting. Personally I never thought the "nothing seems to kill me no matter how hard I try" part had ANYTHING at all to do with suicide. More like survival in the face of a bit of reckless living. More like-- hey, I've done some crazy, dangerous things, I've never particularly taken special care of myself, but I'm still here in spite of it all. So now I know that I'm strong, I'm a survivor, and if my own life choices haven't done me in, then you sure aren't going to. Jen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 14:49:00 -0600 From: Susan Olsheskie Subject: Chris as Christ HEY, Just wanted to put my 2 cents in about the "Christ lookalike" debate, I always thought Chris would be a good Christ candidate, as for Kim- maybe, but I think Chris has him beat. As for all of the talk about a Soundgarden anthem, I would agree with those who would hope it would be Outshined, but I think if its going to be anything, its going to be Black Hole Sun, its just one of those songs where people who know jack about a group will jump on the bandwagon for a month or so because the song is jammed down their throat by constant airplay, and the group will be forever associated with that song by those who basically can't think for themselves, so they follow whoever is imbedded into their skulls by mostly worthless radio stations. As a Chili Pepper fan of old, I can't help thinking about Under the Bridge, I was so annoyed because everywhere I went people who called me a freak for liking them had a Pepper shirt on, even my roomie who was a hard core rap/R&B fan had the single and claimed to love them, when only weeks before she looked at me like I was an alien for hanging a poster of them up. I think most groups that receive attention have a song that clings to them like that, no matter if it best suited to be, so like it or not, I think Black Hole Sun will take the crown, it has already on the classic rock stations in my area. Best wishes to Matt and his bride, and happy haunting to the rest of you!!!!! Susan P.S. Dont take candy from any Michael Bolton fans!!! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 14:03:07 -0600 From: William Flanders Subject: Re: interpretations--from the horse's mouth >CC: "Blow Up the Outside World-- it's not what you'd think of it. So I guess the video and the song have different meanings, because all those disturbing scenes flashing with the labels "love" "father" "mother" etc... do seem to make a cultural statement. Do you think Soundgarden had anything to do with the ideas behind the video? Or do you think that there was some video producer somewhere who had this video put together as a script and idea and sold it to the band afterwards? Bill ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 15:38:13 -0800 From: "S. Kutz" Subject: Re: interpretations--from the horse's mouth In reply to whether or not they had anything to do with the video, I remember hearing from somewhere that they sometimes do, but mostly when they make a video they're just doing it 'cos they have to. chris said something like they're a BAND, they deal with SOUND, the directors of the video put the sounds into images which may or may not have anything to do with the actual meaning behind the songs. I dunno, i think if they've got an idea they can bring it up and stuff, but mostly i think the decision lies with the director. sarah =) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 19:18:12 -0500 From: Angela Woolley Subject: Re: BUTOW Interpretations In a message dated 97-10-30 17:31:35 EST, whflanders@MAIL.UTEXAS.EDU writes: << Before we get too far into BUTOW... Don't the video and lyrics have a clear connection to A Clockwork Orange? >> Bill, I think there is a definite nod to A Clockwork Orange in BUTOW. All we need to do is replace the song with a little Beethoven..... I think they were making a similar reference in Guns N' Roses "Welcome to the Jungle" with Axl in the chair being forced to watch scenes of sex and violence.
