Go to an opera singer and they'd say that you're right. Jeff is a product of formal vocal training. He never sings in that horse overpowering scream or wail, and even when he does something on the borderline of it, he's still very in control. It's almost too much control for the type of music that he's performing. But he's got an unfailing falsetto and incredible ability at holding out notes. Chris, however, is emotion and raw power. To me, I hear a lot more energy in Chris's vocals than I do in Jeffs. They each portray the emotions that they're trying to portray, and they both do it well. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 1997 13:34:10 -0500 From: NIKI FREER Subject: Re: Attn: Everyone!!HELP!!!!! "she likes surprises" to my knowledge never played live. btw- a question for all.... what was the deal with that "songs from the superunknown" release? was that just a technicality of a release? some how i just dont see the boys getting togeather and saying, " hey, i think we need to give the public 6 more songs in the wake of our multi platnium superunknown" anyone have the scoop on why it was released? besides to make a few extra $$$ for those genious record people at A&M, ya know the ones that gave us that jewl (a-sides) .... i guess what im asking is, did SOUNDGARDEN want to specifically release it. mike "so easy leave it or take it in stride" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 1997 15:01:00 -0500 From: Matt Artis Subject: Re: songs never played live... Soundgarden released Songs from the Superunknown as a regular CD form of the songs from Alive in the Superunknown. I think there were some people who only wanted the songs without all of the other stuff. ~Matt ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 1997 15:17:54 +0000 From: Kathie and David Subject: Re: Fresh Tendrils: infidelity? Nikki I was blown away by your interpretation of Fresh Tendrils. I've always thought of this song as being about forbidden temptations, but your words really crystalized it for me. > "long time coming > seemed to take me through... > seemed to get me by... > seemed to satisfy..." > sometimes, maybe you wish you hadn't married your first serious > girlfriend. you wish you had had time to play the field before marrying > susan. you love her so much, but sometimes temptation *really* gets to > you... I'd like to add something here. I think this verse could be about how he IS faithful, even though he's away from Susan for long periods of time. The "long time coming" is the long time he has to wait when he's away from her, and the rest of it "seemed to take me through...seemed to get me by...seemed to satisfy..." I think says that he used to be content with having his romantic moments with Susan, few and far between as they might be, and that was enough for him, to keep him going and to resist the temptation. But now its getting harder for him to be satisfied with that. > you're married for christ's sake!!! but that doesn't make the > temptation stop. maybe you even acted upon it once or twice... > "If it sits upon your tongue > or naked in your eyes > give me little bits of > more than i can try..." > if you haven't been unfaithful, then you're wanting it more than ever. Or maybe this is Matt's verse - if you don't want it can you toss it my way? Sorry, I don't mean to be offensive toward Matt, but read it and think about it.... Oh, and one more thing. The "Shame, shame...Throw yourself away" line could mean he wishes he could get rid of the shame and just go for it, like so many other "rock stars" do. So maybe he isn't already feeling the shame from having done something, but growing up Catholic he has this internal guilt and shame thing going on that he wishes weren't there. I think that comes out in Holy Water too (which I think is all about getting away from religion-induced inhibitions). > one line i didn't manage to place in the > whole scenario is the "Many served the few" line, which i reckon, if i'm > correct on this interpretation (and i'm probably not), would have been a > Matt line. After looking at the song in light of your interpretation my first thought about that line was the "many" groupies wanting to "serve", sexually? the "few", the four of them. The concerts I've been at have had lots more groupies than guys in the band. Its so great to read a post again that really makes you think! Thanks. The most hilarious thing those is Kim without a beard! I'm not sure if these are scanned and up on Seth's site, but it's really funny, he looks like a whole different person without the beard. So I dont screw any of the details up, this comes straight out of the Rocket's Lip Service (the Oct 22- Nov.5 issue) "Truly are back! And this time around Hiro Yamamoto isn't the only 'former Soundgarden bassist' walking the streets of Seattle. Did someone say Soundgarden? Those eagarly waiting to open their wallets for thier forthcomming set )just in time for Christmas), A-Sides, will be happy to know that the band is assembling an entirely new collection for the next holiday season. This album, likely to be a double, will feature Soundgarden outtakes aplenty. Guess we can expect a live album in '99. Perhaps a reunion album in 2000? We'll keep you posted." Well.. thats that! Arden ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Oct 1997 11:17:34 +0800 From: georgia Subject: my own piece of SG & Seattle Okay, so as not to tread on any toes (hi Aaron :)) or walk again over any well trodden ground, I have gone through the digests this morning to catch up on the goings-on on the list over the past six weeks whilst I have been overseas. I realise that few of you would be interested in a blow by blow account of my holiday, so I only relay the small snippet which is SG related, and is hopefully of some interest to at least someone other than me! My first US stop was in Seattle WA. For our first outing, the Thug came and picked me & my friend Jo up & took us to the OK Hotel, where we enjoyed a few drinks & a chat. The musical entertainment for the evening arrived (don't know their names, however, they sang and played beautifully) with a few friends in tow. One of them was Jeff Ament. I was suitably impressed with my first "Seattle" experience. Aaron began talking with a girl who was having a drink at the bar; after a moment he introduced her to me as Erin Haley from Silver Management. I explained that I was on this list & visiting from Australia, and she invited me up to the office the next day for a tour of operations, which I most graciously accepted. Next day I wandered downtown to the offices as planned, and was given a guided tour of the admin by Erin. I was introduced to all the staff, and then to the lady herself, Susan Silver, who was absolutely charming. I was shown the artwork for the forthcoming A-Sides release, which was approved just earlier that day. It basically consists of very nice shots of the members of the band, with green background. Very simple, very tasty. I believe that the title of the release was suggested by Ben, and agreed upon by all the other guys. Erin then asked me if I'd heard the Ave Maria track, which I had not, as it was only released the previous day. So I got to hear it for the first time in her office, overlooking the freeway and the water beyond. (My verdict: I love it! I think that CC's & Natasha's vocals complement eachother beautifully, and the musical arrangement gives it a real dreamlike/French gentry kind of feel. Stunning). Erin then packed me up a little parcel of goodies, including stickers, badges, picks, and some Kozik prints (all signed & numbered!). Was I thrilled?? You bet. An experience which is surely every SG fan's dream. Thank you Erin. So on the back of such a great experience, I was quite saddened by the news that Susan is retiring & that Silver Management will in essence no longer exist. But I suppose I had my moment, and for it, I am most grateful. As far as the current state and future of this list goes: I know what this list has given me personally. Lots of fun friends that I write to, that keep me smiling and trade cool stuff with me that I'd never have the opportunity to find otherwise. And getting to meet three of them from the other side of the world was a completely amazing experience which was such a buzz, which could never have happened had I not been a part of this list. And for reasons such as this, the integrity of this list is worth preserving, because at some point, any of you may be able to have such a truly heart-warming, enlightening, and completely cool SOMMS experience such as I had, or the lucky visitors & residents did at SOMMSfest in Chicago (waving to the birthday girl). The choice is yours to make! To anyone still reading, ciao. georgia ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Oct 1997 00:24:31 -0500 From: CL Miller Subject: If it ain't dead yet . . . kill it!
