So I turned it up a little more and sat up in bed and listened to it. I really thought that the song was good. Chris and Ben were the only ones I could really hear (probably because of the way my stereo is in relationship to my bed) and then I could hear Matt in the background a little and then I heard Kim only when he did that little guitar solo. I really loved the bass in this song and vocals were extra good. And of course, the radio said it was new from Soundgarden...but when you really think about it, Bleed Together is the newest thing from the band that the radios have played in awhile. But it's all good! Kick Ass my friends! -Maria ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Oct 1997 13:12:17 +0000 From: "John D." Subject: Fire fly Hello sommsters! But... he didn't. He's just stating an opinion and I say go him! It is actually very hard to compare the two voices. In my humble opinion, Chris is my favorite singer... but boy oh boy do I worship Mr. Buckley's voice. As I said in my last post his voice is absolutely amazing and EVERYONE should go and buy Grace. Buy it and see exactly what I am talking about... you can't even imagine until you hear it. Trust me..... trust lissa.... Burden in my Hand might be a good example of non-falsetto >Any vocalists out there? Help us out! Lucky you, I'm here to save you all! =) Honestly, though, why wouldn't falsetto count? If you have the breath control to get up into that head voice, and then to keep it strong, that's a great quality of any male vocalist. In almost every famous "Broadway-type" piece, men will HAVE to switch up into their falsetto to hit a few of those really high notes that everybody says is so amazing. The trick is not letting anybody know that you're singing falsetto. And I'm pretty sure Burden In My Hand is primarily falsetto! But it's in a place where he's still really comfortable. Fourth Of July is one of the best examples of his range, I think. He's singing those notes right at the middle of the Bass clef and layered above that is him, singing in his strong falsetto, nailing each note. When he's screaming July, you can hear a more predominant female head-voice sound, but it's still very strong. And for the record, since somebody just clarified this for me, the falsetto is that area that SEEMS like normal register, but just has a different feel to it. It's higher up in the head rather than from the diaphragm and chest. The head voice is that crazy soprano like thing that guys usually do to make fun of a lot of those annoying songs. I thought it was the other way around, but a vocal teacher (credentials and everything) explained that to me when I asked him. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Oct 1997 18:14:12 +0100 From: Lorraine F Nemec Subject: Long time coming..... when i first heard 'fresh tendrils', i was struck by the power, force & exotic beauty of the music. when i first hear any song, the music is always what i focus on - i guess that's just natural, b/c no matter how significant the lyrics may be in my life, no matter how poetic or = brilliant i find them, if i don't love the music then i can't love the song. but = in the case of FT, it wasn't the music OR lyrics that most stirred my = curiosity... it was the title. what did it mean? what could "fresh tendrils" be? = well, it took me a while, but now i think i know. what are tendrils, literally? I thought it was the other way around, >but a vocal teacher (credentials and everything) explained that to me when I >asked him. Not saying that falsetto and head voice aren't different, but at some point the operatic field got them mixed up so I'll explain what I mean by falsetto: This is the best definition of falsetto I have found Falsetto: a style of male singing in which, by only partial use of the vocal cords, the voice reaches the pitch of a female voice. http://top.monad.net/~enjoythemusic/definiti.htm According to http://itc.improd.com/vocalists/vocalistsearch.html it is one of the basic vocal types. But according to http://www.davestroud.com/wholenut.html , head voice is the upper register for men. Let's not get stuck on terms. Examples I would include in falsetto: Bee Gees - "Stayin Alive" Most Prince songs Here are extreme counterexamples (not falsetto but still really high): Thom Yorke (Radiohead) - Bends, Fade out Again, etc Bee Gees - "I Started a Joke" Roy Orbison - "It's Over" AIC - "Man in the Box" Here are examples of what *I* believe Chris' registers are in certain songs ===NR: Normal Register ===F: Falsetto ****LIMO WRECK**** NR: Tears of the feeble, hands of the slaves NR: ... NR: While the rest of you harvest the gold NR: And the F: wreck of you NR: is the death F: of you all NR: And the wreck F: of you NR: is the F: break and the fall NR: I'm the wreck of F: you NR: I'm the death of you F: all NR: I'm the wreck F: of you NR: I'm the break F: and the fall ***OUTSHINED*** ... Either his falsetto has gotten really harsh since Badmotorfinger or he's screaming to a melody during 90% of the song. Compare it to "Never the Machine Forever" where almost the entire song is falsetto, sound the same? Not to me. What I've found most incredible is how often Chris seamlessly goes to falsetto and back in so many songs. What sucks is that we have to go by instincts on this, because no one, to my knowledge, has really studied rock/metal vocals. Bill PS. Yes, this post was longer than I intended.
