But this news is true. I don't think this was mentioned at all before and I'm not sure if anyone knows.... but Hiro and Kate McDonald (whom I feel a very close connection to; she wrote my fave Soundgarden lyric ;o) are expecting a son, who they are thinking of naming William. =) I found this news out from a guy that worked on the most recent Truly album. He also told me that Hiro was *laid off* from his job! =( Whoa! Anyway, the guy's really nice, his name is Andy and he *supposedly* wrote lyrics for the Truly album also. Don't know how true some of this stuff is but I thought I'd let you all know what's up w/ Hiro's life (more personal stuff than we normally hear about him) since we hear about Chris, Kim, Matt, and Ben all the time. I thought it was really great that Hiro and Kate are making babies ;o)~ and Andy says the Truly record is great and that Hiro is an amazingly nice guy. =) But we already knew that didn't we? Subject: Fresh Tendrils: infidelity? hey sommsters! i was listening to SU really carefully the other night, because i had to do a full evaluation of the disc for a class, and i started really diving into the lyrics. i know this is going to seem like *really* stretching, really going out on a limb, but the lyrics to Fresh Tendrils seem more and more to be about possible infidelity or extreme temptation. anyone else ever have this thought? here's my theory: **** disclaimer**** the instances are NOT known to be true, they're just my f-ing THEORY on the lyrics. i know it's one of the biggest stretches of an interpretation of SG lyrics, but i still think i can make you think twice about it next time you read them. = ) okay, say you're chris cornell. you're gorgeous, and you've got hundreds of girls throwing themselves at you every night after every show. say you're matt cameron, you see all this happening to your bandmate after every show. matt writes lyrics about it. chris reads them, likes them, then adds his own stuff, keeping the basis of what matt wrote, but making it more personal. he loves susan, yes, but temptation is a part of life no matter who you are. "long time coming seemed to take me through... seemed to get me by... seemed to satisfy..." sometimes, maybe you wish you hadn't married your first serious girlfriend. you wish you had had time to play the field before marrying susan. you love her so much, but sometimes temptation *really* gets to you... "and long to taste the shame that bows down before you..." that's your line about it. matt's line is: "you long to taste the shame that everybody tries..." and it gets to you... really digs inside of you. you scold yourself "Shame Shame" but you just want to "Throw yourself away..." (the "yourself" being dignity and honest nature) "...Give me little bits of more than i can take..." you want it, you want to try it so bad... but you can't. you *know* you can't. you're married for christ's sake!!! but that doesn't make the temptation stop. maybe you even acted upon it once or twice... "If it sits upon your tongue or naked in your eyes give me little bits of more than i can try..." if you haven't been unfaithful, then you're wanting it more than ever. but you're married, so you don't. but if you have, then you're sorry as hell, screaming at yourself: "You throw yourself away throw yourself away!" over and over and over... cursing yourself for the mistake. ------------ so, um, is that one hell of a far stretch, or am i really not that crazy? because i like this reading of it, it's a very dark, deep, secretive song. it's very seductive in it's tone, and i think that also adds to the lyrical intent. one line i didn't manage to place in the whole scenario is the "Many served the few" line, which i reckon, if i'm correct on this interpretation (and i'm probably not), would have been a Matt line. Again, i'm not saying that chris cheated or whatever, or ever even wanted to. it's just how the song sounds to me. it could be about his peers, how his peers deal with the groupies and the sex aspect of the rock life. hell, it could be about something that i can't even grasp yet. but this is how i read it. i've always loved this song, the lyrics, the music. i think it's one of the best matt-chris collaborations ever. and that was how i just recently read the lyrics. mind riot ps- if you're offended, i'm really sorry, but an interpretation is an intrepretation. i've never seen masturbation in Drawing Flies, but that doesn't offend me. so relax everyone. = ) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Oct 1997 11:51:16 -0400 From: Elric&Dagny Subject: Re: Fresh Tendrils: infidelity? > so, um, is that one hell of a far stretch, or am i really not that > crazy? because i like this reading of it, it's a very dark, deep, > secretive song. it's very seductive in it's tone, and i think that also > adds to the lyrical intent. one line i didn't manage to place in the > whole scenario is the "Many served the few" line, which i reckon, if i'm > correct on this interpretation (and i'm probably not), would have been a > Matt line. Hi guys! In some sense, I can see where Nikki is coming from with this, but I have always seen it more about temptation. The infidelity hadn't occurred to me, although I guess it depends on where you're coming from. My frame of reference has led me to see it about drug abuse. Even the "Many served the few" line fits in my interpretation. Please don't send me notes about getting off of drugs; over the years I've become a responsible adult. ;) I think it's a song about the many forms of temptation that everyone has to deal with. But I have to commend Nikki on this: You did a good job of supporting your opinion, and if the rest of your analysis is this well-thought out then you should get a good grade on your paper. I sure wish I could have done papers on SG when I was in school!! Life Rules! Those notes sound higher to me than the ones in New Damage. I am not very good at this stuff but I think that the note that Chris comes in with on Loud Love is the highest E on a guitar. That seems a lot higher to me than the 880HZ A in Dew Damage. On the other hand, I think it was already mentioned, he cant really sing up there. He can hit a few notes but that is it. Now that 'Bleed Together' is getting airplay, it urged me to go and pull out my UK CD single set of BIMH and slap it on my disk player. Actually, I only listened to 'Bleed Together' maybe twice when I first bought the CD set. I've now played it over 50 times and I gotta say that I'm really HOOKED on this song! I mean, Chris' powerful vocals are ever so present and grab you immediately. Most of the lyrics are pretty easy to understand, but nevertheless, I got onto Seths websight and pulled up the lyrics anyway. I was happy to see that the lyrics that Chris is singing at the end of the song, (which are purposely buried in the mix and then layered) where included on the lyric sheet as well, which was great cause they were the only ones that I couldn't quite make out. And if you don't listen closely, they could be quite easily overlooked. I was wondering if anyone else digs this song as much as me? Since now.... I can't go a day without playing it at least 10 times!! Hey All, The other day I got to check my mail and I read Somms (which inclueded posts about Susan Silver's retirement). This really made me sad and reading everyone's "it's really over" statements, it just got me really down. The weird thing was that when I went back into my room (I had left the radio on while I came to get online) flowing from my speakers was the very last line of BUTOW. It was kinda creepy in a way. You know, like it's some message that Chris was sending over the air waves saying "Yes, it is over." but in the words of "Blow up the outside..." I know I'm being silly but it made me wonder. Well, I'm sure Susan will do something brilliant and just think of all that time she'll have to spend with Chris. Hmmmm... Anyway I just thought I would share. Take care and be sweet!!! When someone asks me my favorite singer I must say Chris, but I always feel kind of guilty to leave out Jeff Buckley. I totally agree with what Alissa Corsi is saying, and im kind of surprised that someone else would make that reference because frankly, most people say Jeff who?? when I bring him up. To anyone out there who has not heard Grace yet, I suggest you go out and get it immediately, this was a very gifted man with a golden voice that was taken from us way too soon. Ohayo SOMMSters! So I have finally gotten a chance to hear "Bleed Together" after many nights of staying up to hear the damn thing on the radio (which they refer to as the "new" SG song, like they went into the recording studio for one more song) only to fall asleep. Well last night I didn't. My take on the song......I was kinda disappointed. I don't know it was 4:30 in the am, so who knows where my listening skills were. I didn't even recognize them. To me it just sounded like another song on the radio -=[ I'm sorry if this conflicts with y'all, but I guess I have to hear it again, with all my senses, and check out the words, maybe my mind will be swayed. It was okay, just not what I expected. Well much luv, take care, and all that and a bag of chips.......... DeZHy "if this isn't makin sense, it doesn't make it lies." The only thing that doesn't seem like a hit radio song is Chris' abrasive vocals. Funny they would release as a single from the best of soundgarden a song so uncharacteristically soundgarden.
