I assume this was the Devo J file on recovery, and well, it was just Gil U want played to the background of part of the BHS clip, I don't think(but am not sure) that there is an actual soundgarden clip for Girl U Want Nicky:) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Oct 1997 17:10:21 +0000 From: Fiona Thiessen Subject: SORRY!! BUTT today is a very special day for one of the list older member (both age and length of time on the list). BUTT this lady is a very special SOMMs member. She let a group of wild and crazy SOMMs member invade her home. She had to stuff all of us in her car and transport us all over Chicago. She had to put up with SOMMs member drinking gallons of coffee around her kitchen table. She had to dance crazy and sing at the top of her lungs through not 1 but "5" SG shows all with in a few months of each other. She had to act totally normal when Chris, Matt, and her wonderful Kim walked up to her.. She had to be nice and not complain when I got her lost on the back roads of Virginia after a SG concert. She has been a top notch member of the SOMMs Mailing list (only a few minor flames). BUTT most of all she has become a dear and sweet friend to me and many other SOMMs members. So on this very special day I want to wish Ms. Toni Roark (our very own Tonerkins) a very special HAPPY BIRTHDAY Jamie (SOMMs Mom) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Oct 1997 16:32:55 -0400 From: Sean Greene Subject: results of that favorite metal band thing If anyone remembers, a while ago someone posted about that favorite metal band of all time poll. At the time, sg wasn't doing to well. A ton of people ended up voting, and sg did very well. Here's how they finished: favorite band-21 album-badmotorfinger-19, superunknown-33, dotu-66, LTL-87, ultramega ok-141 vocalist-cornell-7 guitarist-thayil-11 bassist-shepherd-12 drumer-cameron-13 songwriters-12 Like i said, there was a ton of bands that were voted for, and sg did suprisingly well Sean ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Oct 1997 16:03:33 -0500 From: Moon Druid Subject: The good ol' days! >Date: Mon, 13 Oct 1997 12:44:24 -0400 >From: CL Miller >Subject: Ave Maria . . . Hallelujah! >You know, it's kind of nice to have the old spirit of SOMMS back. >Discussing song lyrics and what? No flames? It has been a long time, actually... my favorite days were when there were something like 20 of us tearing apart each lyric and trying to discover the true meaning. Then somebody came along and told us what Chris really meant, and we all saw that and kinda' backed down. Sure, we had the discussion about lyrics being art, and that all meanings were up for interpretation, but who cared? And then people just appeared out of nowhere, we started flamewars. Then the breakup, and then everybody had something to say about it... and a lot to say, nonetheless... for a good month and a half. I came back in hopes that we could return to the good old days. Where did we leave off? Was it with Mind Riot, or was it with Drawing Flies and it's ties to masturbation (fire...cannon, sitting here in my own obscenity, firing the pistol, etc., etc., etc..) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Oct 1997 18:35:53 -0400 From: Maria Joseph Subject: Re: Ave Maria FUN! Hey, SOMMSters! Recently this was suggested to me I was gonna see if I could determine Chris' vocals anyways, since I noticed some words different but I went through it and tried my best. A LOT of lines are different. Here's what I came up with: Ave Maria! Maiden mild! O listen to a maiden's prayer Four thou canst hear amid the wild Tis thou, tis thou canst save amid despair We slumber safely till the morrow Tho ___ _____, out-cast, reviled O Maiden, see a maiden's sorrow O Mother, hear a suppliant child Ave Maria! Ave Maria! Undefiled! The flinty couch where on we're sleeping Shall seem with down of eider piled If Thou {our births?} we wash are keeping The murky caverns are so heavy Shall breathe of balm if Thou has smiled O Maiden, hear a maiden {speaking?} O Mother, hear a supliant child Ave Maria! Ave Maria! Stainless styled! {O fields of air or earthly and sons?} From this their wonted haunt exiled Shall fee before Thy holy presence We bow beneath our cares {of legum?} To Thy the guidance reconciled Then hear, o maid a simple maiden And for a father hear a child Ave Maria! Well, first, I wasn't sure of a few things. Like I understand "We slumber safely till the morrow", but I was thinking that maybe "O fields of air or earthly and sons" was like that line.. where an 'modern' English word (tomorrow) was said simply as 'morrow'. But with that line "O fields..." I'm not sure because it doesn't make complete sense to me, but of course I was assuming that since it's Old English it's going to sound different so........... But that was exactly what I heard. Then there's "..... of legum"..... I know what a legume is, but legum? I heard Chris singing it and Natasha finishing it off (she was clearer) and I heard legum {ley-gum}.. I was stumped on the 6th line where originally it was written that it said "Tho' banish'd, out-cast, and reviled" Well, I replayed that a million times and heard nothing that even came close to being said as "banish'd" so I assumed something else was being said... what, I dunno. And that line about "our births we wash are keeping"... that's a weird one I picked up. But I am sure that he's singing "we wash are keeping"... It's a real tough piece to determine the lyrics, but I really really tried. Anyone hear differently? -Maria ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Oct 1997 21:31:46 +0000 From: Marc Hollett Subject: Louder Than Live Anyone know a place where I can get the Louder Than Live video or some Soundgarden bootlegs? Hey everyone :) >Was it with Mind Riot, or was it with Drawing Flies and it's ties to >masturbation (fire...cannon, sitting here in my own obscenity, firing the >pistol, etc., etc., etc..) > i have thought about this before but i thought i was just being dirty and brushed it off.. now that someone else brought it up. hallelujah!! it's either true that the listeners are dirty, the guys put in alot of double meanings, or the guys are dirty.. you be the judge.. but really.. you could go to extremes and find double meanings (argh there's a word for it.. um umm.. can't think!) in just about every song.. like "painted blue across my eyes and tie the linen on" could be heard as something kinky.. depends how you feel about the song personally.. and as for drawing flies i like to think of it as writers block because it's a song i love and i'd appreciate it better knowing it wasn't about someone jerking off.. i think the guys are more intelligent than that.. but i'll stop now.. just had the urge to post about this.. - koggy - ps. and a happy birthday to toni.. i can add to the 'why she's wonderful' list because she's gone out of her way to get a cd to australia.. for no reason other than she's being nice! that's pretty special, i think.. :) happy birthday Toni ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Oct 1997 18:44:16 PDT From: Angry Taco Subject: A-Sides Sorry if I'm dredging up something old, but does anyone have any insights into what the cover of A-Sides will look like? ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Oct 1997 21:00:27 -0500 From: Richard E Horner Subject: Ave Maria and Singles Umm, I heard the Real Audio clip of Ave Maria on the official Very Special Christmas site and I found it very disturbing. I mean, maybe it was the poor sound quality, but the organ/keyboard thingy was jarringly loud and just made me wanna shout "AHH" I don't think I'll be pickin up the cd. It wasn't exactly my kinda thing. I finnally stole...err...borrowed my brother's copy of the Singles soundtrack (along with Yngwie Malmsteen, Anthrax, and more Queensryche :) ). I haven't had time to compare so I thought I'd ask. The version of Birth Ritual on Singles does not sound like the same cut as the on on BIMH part 1. Am I correct in this? Singles sounds like it has a longer intro, and just sounded rougher around the edges, like the solo and stuff too. I don't know, standardized testing does bad shit to you.
