Chris wrote some of the background music for Singles. In one part, when they show the "Citizen Dick" flyer being put on the telephone pole, you can hear an early acoustic demo of "Spoonman" playing in the background. Most of the score was done by Paul Westerberg, but Chris contributed some. It's fun to just watch the movie over and over and pick out the "Chris" parts. :) Later, Mike Apple *********************************************************** "I'm a strong believer in the philosophy of a ruling class. I must agree that the music is very overbearing and does not fit the song. That kind of old, classical piece being sung by someone with a voice like Chris should have a more conventional and traditional accompiament. I think hte way Chris sings it fits the song very well but I really can't stand to listen to the music that goes with it. Does anyone have the lyrics to this song? I'd like to read over them. Lyndsay ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Oct 1997 14:47:02 -0400 From: Maria Joseph Subject: Re: Ave Maria I've been looking for the lyrics also, but I was doing it privately with people on different types of newsgroups.. I checked with them and they all keep saying the same thing, that, well, it's the prayer (not to get too religious for all of you) and they sent me the prayer and it's not what Chris is singing with Natasha. So I told them stuff about the song and the album and gave them the link to the soundclip. This one guy e-mail the chairwoman of some Linguistics organization and she wrote some stuff I might consider as the lyrics but i doubt it. I mentioned that it was Frank Schubert's lyrics and no one seems to know about the song... so, I dunno, but if you get the lyrics please tell us. Sorry for run-ons -Maria ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Oct 1997 14:12:27 PDT From: The Koggle Subject: burden in my mind.. Morning list! :) does anyone know anything about a release called Burden in my Mind?? i went to a online cd shop thingy (www.cdjoint.com) and they have Burden in My Mind #1 & #2.. i thought it could possibly be a typo, but i've seen it on two different sites.. and i looked at steve's discography page.. to no avail.. is it similar to the pretty noose and BUTOW sets? it says it's an import, but that's it.. anyway.. and am i right to say there's a book AND a cd called New Metal Crown? if not, which is it..!? heheh thanks for any help - kogg - ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Oct 1997 17:18:35 EDT From: saperl@ALUM.MIT.EDU Subject: Re: burden in my mind.. > does anyone know anything about a release called Burden in my Mind?? i > went to a online cd shop thingy (www.cdjoint.com) and they have Burden > in My Mind #1 & #2.. > i thought it could possibly be a typo, but i've seen it on two different > sites.. and i looked at steve's discography page.. to no avail.. You could see it on 100 sites and it would still be a typo. No such thing. There's also no such song as Birth Control, but that's what's printed on the Australian release of the BIMH disc. > and am i right to say there's a book AND a cd called New Metal Crown? if > not, which is it..!? heheh It's just a book by Chris Nickson. And a crappy, unauthorized one at that, consisting of nothing but text cut directly from magazine articles and frowned upon by SG and the management. It was published in 1995 but was revised in February 1997 (talk about bad timing) in Italy under the name Ultramega Rock, if I remember correctly. -seth ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Oct 1997 17:41:25 EDT From: saperl@ALUM.MIT.EDU Subject: Re: Ave Maria > I've been looking for the lyrics also, but I was doing it privately with > people on different types of newsgroups.. I checked with them and they all > keep saying the same thing, that, well, it's the prayer (not to get too > religious for all of you) and they sent me the prayer and it's not what Chris > is singing with Natasha. I've only heard the sound clip that I put up on the website, not the whole track, but let me take a stab at it... It's a bit deceiving since the Schubert setting of Ave Maria is not really the prayer text. The prayer text is "Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Blah blah blah, etc." Translated into English you'll get "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blah blah blah, etc." And of course, that's not what Chris and Natasha are singing. Schubert, however, uses a piece of text from Walter Scott's English poem Ellen's Song III (A Hymn to the Virgin) which was translated into German for Schubert by Adolf Storck. The original English text is as follows: Ave Maria! Maiden mild! Listen to a maiden's prayer! Thou canst hear through from the wild Thou canst save amid despair Safe may we sleep beneath thy care Though banish'd, outcast, and reviled; Maiden! hear a maiden's prayer - Mother, hear a suppliant child! Ave Maria! Ave Maria! undefiled! The flinty couch we now must share Shall seem with down of eider piled, If thy protection hover there. The murky cavern's heavy air Shall breathe of balm if thou hast smiled; Then, Maiden! hear a maiden's prayer; Mother, list a suppliant child! Ave Maria! The first four lines of the text are what Chris is singing in the sound clip; I don't know about the rest of the track, but I imagine it's pretty close. If it's not, please let me know. -seth ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Oct 1997 18:00:20 -0400 From: Maria Joseph Subject: Re: Ave Maria Hey, guys! Well, I popped in the cd and listened while I read what Seth posted and the words that Chris sing touch base with these lines, in both stanzas. Like, the lines are said but with the addition and subtraction of a few words. There is s 3rd verse to the song that is sung. Is there a 3rd stanza to this poem? But basically Chris/Natasha sing these lines with a few changes. -Maria ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Oct 1997 19:41:27 -0400 From: Elric&Dagny Subject: My search for Ave Maria Hi guys! I'm posting this in the hope that it will help someone else who might go through the same thing. We went to Asheville, NC over the weekend and while I was there I searched high and low for Ave Maria. Yes, I tried the indy stores first. I finally had to go to Circuit City. After looking all over the store and through every cheesy Christmas cd (how many people actually buy the Bing Crosby one??) I was about ready to give up. We went to the counter to purchase some other cd's and at the last minute, my husband (what a guy :) asked the girl if they had any Christmas cd's that they hadn't put out yet. She wants to know which one, and very nonchalantly pulls it out from behind the counter. I said "What are you waiting on??" So just because your local store doesn't have it displayed, bug them about it until they put it out! As for my opinion, I think Chris' voice sounds wonderful. But I have to agree with some of the others about the organ. I think it sounds like calliope music. The more I hear it the more I'll get used to it. But I would have been happier with it if Chris had sung it either a capella or if there was just a low-key gothic organ in the background. His voice alone would have carried the song beautifully!! Anyway, there are only a few songs on the album that I actively dislike; the rest of them are at least listenable. So I would say that the album IS worth getting. You just might have to go to a little effort to find it. Unless, of course, you live somewhere cooler than me. :) Life Rules! Dagny ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Oct 1997 19:40:19 -0500 From: William Flanders Subject: Ave Maria FUN! Hey people. If you are interested in hearing another version of Ave Maria, here is a link: http://www.bright.net/~shwendel/mp3.html. It is a huge file, so modem users beware. This version is a duet with Dolores O'Riordan (Cranberries) and Pavarotti. It follows the same tune as Chris' version, but with the Latin lyrics. I think it's a little better, but Chris does an excellent job. For 28.8ers http://www.uakom.sk/audiobox/ra/1359-13.ra, realaudio. Unfortunately the RA clip never gets to Pavarotti. Info about Schubert, Scott and Ave Maria: http://www.charm.net/~tomokoy/gmunden.html Also, extrapolating from Seth's lyrics, here are all the verses according to http://www.genie.com/holiday/gfxcarol.html.... I'm embarrassed that an amiga text carol guide is the only place I could find this version... Ave Maria! Maiden mild! O listen to a maiden's prayer! For thou canst hear through from the wild, Thou canst save amid despair, amid despair. Safe may we sleep beneath Thy care, Tho' banish'd, out-cast and reviled, O Maiden, hear a maiden's prayer, O Mother, hear a supplicant child! Ave Maria! Ave Maria! Undefiled! The flinty couch we now must share Shall seem with down of eider piled, If Thy protections, If Thy protections hover fair The murky caverns heavy air Shall breathe of balm if Thou has smiled, Thou Maiden, hear a maiden's prayer, O Mother, hear a supliant child! Ave Maria! Ave Maria! Stainless styled! Foul demons of the earth and air From this their wonted haunt exiled Shall fee before Thy presence, Thy presence fair We bow us to our lot of care Beneath Thy guidance reconciled, Hear for a maid a maiden's prayer, And for a father hear a child! Ave Maria! Seth, if I may ask, how were you able to get the clip? From the realaudio? I'm curious how this was done... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Oct 1997 22:45:52 -0400 From: Maria Joseph Subject: Flyin' Traps Hey! I was trying to see if I could get on Eleven's web page and then I found myself browsing on the page for Flyin' Traps.. We all know Matt's on it and he's doing a track with Taz Bentley called "Theme From Wrong Holy-O". Well I read some stuff about the album which came out Sept. 23 and I went to a link so that I could hear some sample tracks. The Mattster and Taz's song is track 1 and I heard a clip of it. It's about a 5 -10 sec clip and it's got some guitar in it. I need to get the cd so that I can focus better on the drumming than the guitar but for now what I heard was pretty neat. I'll post the addy for it but it's long (but you can cut and paste), so if you want e-mail me and I'll give you a link: www.hollywoodrec.com/HollywoodRecords/Musicians/FlyinTraps/track1.html It took me awhile to be able to hear it, maybe like 5 minutes and the clip is very short, if you've got some time and patience you should hear it I guess. See-ya! -Maria ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 12 Oct 1997 to 13 Oct 1997 ************************************************
