Kinser" Subject: Cornell, Chris Cornell I heard a snippet of news last week, where I can't really remember. maybe it was Mtv news or something. But anyways, I seem to remember hearing Chris Cornells' name mentioned in conjunction with the new James Bond movie coming out this winter. Has anyone else heard anything like this? I could be totally off base and don't want to start any rumors, but I swear I heard this. Maybe he is contributing a cut to the soundtrack? Yes, Chris is suppose to have a cut on the James Bond film..saw the preview for it but the music was all very James Bondish if you know what I mean. On a similar note I saw the trailer for Great Expectations the other night. It is not actually Charles Dickens in a sense of period of time(maybe the story line is I'm not sure) Gwenyth Pantrow and Ethan Hawke playing modern people. No, Chris and Eleven that I heard but I can see his music being used in this. Out at Christmas it said. I had visions of a period piece when I first heard about it and that is what threw me off. Of course now that we know CC can sing Olde English what the hell..... the Beowulf soundtrack might be next!! A side note! Any Chicago area sommsters.....Saturday October 11th Gingerman Tavern. 3740 N. Clark(next to Metro/Smart Bar) a mini SOMMSfest around 5pm. Come on down and met fellow Soundgarden fans. Entertainment provided by a cage match between Kim(a former Chicago boy) and Billy C (representing the Lakeview neighborhood) Free drinks, lavish buffet, the Pretty Noose dancing girl. And 3 hour reunion concert by the late great Soundgarden!!............................................................... ... OK, so I'm a lying sack of shit. I bet I had a few of you checking flight schedules to Chicago!!! The only truthful thing I said is we are having a mini SOMMSfest and all are invited. But my rubella is finally clearing up, so it's time I spoke. From August 27th to Sept 5th I had an incredible adventure in Seattle. This included taking in the first and possibly last Wellwater Conspiracy show, and possibly the last Hater show. And when I thought my holiday could not get any better, I end up sitting at the bar talking to Ben Shepherd. I ended up having a pretty long conversation with him; I won't go into most of the details, because it was a private conversation. But it is true that Ben told me that I had witnessed the last Hater show and the one and only Wellwater show. He told me both bands had broken up. I was obviously stunned at his revelation. I didn't pressure him for details, though maybe I should have, or could have. He also told me he wasn't playing for Devilhead anymore, but I think that was old news already -- the person running the Devilhead website had known for a while. Some other sommsters I talked to had me believe Ben was putting me on. And I suppose it's possible, but he was looking directly into my eyes with a completely serious look when he said it. So anyway, that's all I know. Geoff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Oct 1997 16:12:44 -0400 From: Anna Mehrer Subject: Re: arena rockers: Sam Perkins and Chris Cornell in new RS.. I want the man. Hey, there ain't nothing wrong with a man loving another man, right? Right? Anyone? Seriously, I think the reason I really like this pic is simply because it's a whole new look for him and I think it rocks. Let's see..we had the long haired Chris, the shaved head Chris, the Superunknown Chris, The Wolfman Chris (SNL anyone?), and now we have the Dave Navarro Chris. He looks like he is in his mid-20's in that pic. It's the kind of picture that makes you say "Damn, I want to be *you* when I grow up.." I heard Ave Maria today. Interesting piece of work. I wouldn't recommend buying the whole cd but his one song is quite good. Chris's voice sounds deeper than I have ever heard it..so much so that it didn't sound like him at first. But it's a very strong assertive voice and has a *very* opera-like feel to it. It's hard to describe in words. But it is very good. The whole production of the song was good actually. I wish there was some way I could just buy a single for Ave Maria and not the rest of the album. Wow, if you think about it, this is a big week in SG-related land. Chris's first post-SG work is released, he gets his new look or whatever you want to call it, and now we have the breakup of not only Hater but the Wellwater Conspiracy, if the rumors are true. I really liked Hater too. Such a shame, knowing that they were in production on their next album and everything. Does anyone have any more facts about the breakups? Bring the noise.. -vince ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Oct 1997 18:43:04 -0500 From: Vince Varkey Subject: Re: disturbed.... I really wouldn't let one or two statements change your entire opinion about Thayil like you seem to be doing. I understand how you feel however. This greatest hits thing rubbed me wrong from the get go. I tend to take his statements with a grain of salt though. What was he supposed to say? That A-Sides was going to suck? He, probably by default, was elected the spokesperson for the album so he can't sit there and bash it. He unfortunately has to give the company line. It sucks but that's just the way it turned out this time around. Give Kim some credit. I would venture a guess and say that Kim is definitely not the money-hungry person your statements make him out to be. Wow, alot has happened in the past week, rumors of Hater/WWC breakup, Chris singing Ave Maria (heard the real audio clip, haven't heard the whole song yet, and yeah, Chris does sound cool), just a pretty busy week in the post-SG realm. Anyway, is it just me or does it sound like Chris is doing alot of Soundtrack stuff? I really hope he doesn't become a 'soundtrack only' guy. Anyway, hopefully we'll see the solo album eventually. As for Hater and WWC breaking up..I dunno, the only thing I can think of, maybe the guys of SG and such are just alittle burned out? They were doing this whole gig for over ten years...that's a long time. I'd say we see something alittle more permenant from them again in the future, maybe by next year...Anyway, kinda depressing that Hater would break up.. "synthetic". I don't know how to explain it but the sythesizers make it sound too clean, "early 80's clean" . . . My friends and I all agree it sounds like Klaus Nomi (without the falsetto :) ) Chris does a good job with the vocals and Natasha's harmonies really bring out Chris's voice alot but . . . the music itself sounds too dramtic and and, dare i say it, fake (very Klaus) check out http://www.utu.fi/%7Elausto/nomi.html Thank God Chris doesn't sing it like the vibrato voiced old ladies who sing in church (laughing)! Next time, get a real orchestra please Chris. The other things that bothers me: 1) Chris on an album with Enya, Sting, and Steve Winwood I hope his career isn't going in "that" direction I'm a big Sting fan but . . . yikes! 2) Song 9 by Hootie and the Blowfish | Song 10 Chris Cornell w/ Eleven Well, it's for charity, and a good one at that so . . . I cant' complain, but sometimes I still do . . . Klaus Nomi was a countertenor and baryton singer who sang both opera and
rock'n'roll. He was a great singer and a funny guy but he's remembered
mostly because he died. He was the first celebrity who died of AIDS.

A short biography:

Klaus Nomi was born in Germany in 1944. His real name was Klaus Sperber.
In his youth he worked as an usher at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and would
imitate such singers as Elvis Presley and Maria Callas. He didn't get to
the Deutsche Oper as a singer. He got depressed and went to New York. There he
first had a job as a pastry chef at the World Trade Center and later
formed a freelance baking company but sang in rock clubs too.
Then he met David Bowie who asked him and Joey Arias to sing with him in
the Saturday Night Live TV show. Nomi and Arias sang backing vocals on
Bowie's songs "The Man Who Sold the World", "TVC15" and "Boys Keep Swinging".
After that Nomi got a lot of gigs. He made his records in the early
eighties and died of AIDS August 6th 1983

the Male Soprano page: There's something about Nomi too.

Watch these movies:

  • Wigstock: The Movie
A document from a transvestite festival featuring Joey Arias
  • Naked Gun 2 1/2
There's a Nomi parody (or at least I think it is)
  • A Nos Amours
The music of this movie is "The Cold Song" sung by Nomi

If you like Nomi you might like

  • Henry Purcell
An English baroque composer. Nomi has sung some of his songs.

  • Marlene Dietrich
Sings the original version of "Falling in Love Again" in the legendary
"Blue Angel" movie. Nomi's version is quite different.

  • David Bowie
He's even been singing with Nomi. His space oddity things have been quite
interesting as most of his music.

  • Lou Christie
Nomi's version of "Lightning Strikes" is much better
than the original but Christie has some great songs.
His baryton-falsetto singing must have had a great influence to Nomi.

  • The King's Singers
An a-cappella group that sings The Beatles as well as Orlando di Lasso.
David Hurley has the most beautiful countertenor voice of the world.

The most common question asked from me is
WHERE CAN I FIND NOMI'S RECORDS?
They aren't easy to find. I've heard that in the USA they are even harder to find than here in Europe. I have seen some in the biggest record stores of
London, United Kingdom (Tower Records)
Vienna, Austria
Munich, Germany
