But Ben only wrote the lyrics to this one. John McBain wrote the music. Ben and John make a great team, though! Bunchy got me thinking, though, talking about her drumming. I read a thread on a guitar newsgroup that asked "What song inspired you to take up guitar, and what was the first song you learned to play all the way through?" There were some pretty interesting answers, but I realized that I could have answered both parts of that with SG songs (although, in my case, it's bass). I wanted to play bass ever since I can remember, but instead tried piano (as a child, and failed miserably), guitar (ditto), and drums (failed not quite so miserably, but it's tough to drum with a surgically reconstructed shoulder). Well, no one in the world plays bass like Ben, as we all know, and Burden in My Hand just pushed me over the edge. As soon as I got the money I got a bass, and I'm quite happy and comfortable with it. And the first song I learned to play all the way through? Big Dumb Sex. So, are there any of you out there who were inspired by SG to take up a particular instrument (it needn't be your first), and if so, what song, what instrument, and what was the first SG song you learned to play all the way through? I find it lame to put it bluntly. If you compare it other SG album titles, they are all really creative and fall into 2 categories. Category #1 - Two or more words joined together to form a completely new word that has never been invented. These ones are: Ultramega OK Badmotorfinger Superunknown All really interesting words that combine really well and just roll off the tongue. All were invented by Soundgarden Category #2 - A cliche type thing, which could mean many, many different things depending on the angle from which you look at it. these are: Louder than Love Down on the Upside I find these really cool. So creative and have so many meanings. Anyway, you'll see my point if you write them all down on a piece of paper. You travel down the list past all these meaingful and creative titles, then you come to A- sides. It just doesn't sit right. I wonder if the name originated from the band, or that was what A&M wanted??? It just surprised me to hear of such a lame title for the greatest hits of such a great band. I had the hardest few weeks earlier this year [around early April -I think you might understand me here;)] coming to terms with the fact that Soundgarden were *no more*. The one band that I had felt so excited and passionate [yes I am rather fervent] about listening to [I would spend days *salivating* to get home to listen to my new found glory] was finished. I am what some might call a bandwagonjumper -no, more a latecomer- in that I only discovered Soundgarden late last year/early this year, through a Soundgarden radio special [The J-file, for fellow Kangaroo-riders] while listening to songs like JCP and Hunted Down. So in that way, I suppose older, more longtime fans could consider my *loss* to be not as great. Or maybe they wouldn't. But one of the most sad things, for me about the demise of SG is that I have never been able to see them play live. Now we're hearing [or am I just misunderstanding this?] that the band that we have finally come to terms with not *being* a band any longer, is going to perform 'unplugged'. I just find it hard to grasp this. *Are* they still a band together or *aren't* they? Don't get me wrong, I would love the idea of an unplugged concert performed by our four virtuosos [I think Stolen Prayer along with some of the others listed ie zero chance would be brilliant -just to reply to the 'what songs?' post] and I am certainly not flaming anyone. I genuinely do not understand. Am I being obtuse? Do other bands do this? Should we consider this an early KISS-type reunion? Or are they getting back together? I think I'll stop it there. [Sorry 'bout the length -I get very frustrated:)] Lily. And sorry again if I'm repeating here. What can I say? I'm a newbie. ------------------------------------------------- '...Zero chance of ever turning this around...' ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Sep 1997 18:10:08 -0400 From: Catherine Veit Subject: Re: characteristic songs/what inspired you? oohh a topic!!!! well i started playing guitar when i was 13.... a week and a day from 14. nevertheless i was 13. truthfully the real reason i wanted to play was because i enjoyed watching my dad play, i envied him in a way, because he was respected for his abilities, i too wanted to be respected. around that time i was starting to get into sg since outshined became super popular, but it wasn't the 1st tune i would learn all the way through. angry chair was the first, and at that time AIC made me enthusiastic about that type of music. then it was outshined, the song i heard morning noon and night on KROQ. that one is pretty easy to play but it's fun. suicide is probably my fav to play although i can't quite master the solo. i've always appreciated sg for not always relying on power chords to pull them through a song. -cats4kim ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Sep 1997 20:22:40 -0400 From: Lyndsay Smith Subject: Re: characteristic songs/what inspired you? I didn't have one song that made me want to take up the guitar, but Soundgarden definitely inspired me to. The first song that I diligently learned how to play all the way through was Fell on Black Days. I'm still working on getting better on it. Most of the songs that I play are Soundgarden. Its always losts of fun and a challenge to play them. Any fan has everything but "Bleed Together" anyway. However I think the title was most likely created by the label and approved by the band members. At this point if A&M was going to put out a "Soundgarden" greatest hits they could care less what A&M calls it. As far as the guys are concerned they have already done what they wanted for Soundgarden. ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* IF THIS ISN'T MAKING SENSE IT DOESN'T MAKE IT LIES ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 01:38:04 -0400 From: Scott Hammer Subject: Live Songs I was just sitting here falling asleep and I started wonderin...were there any songs that they never played live? I'm not talkin about b-sides and stuff here people, just regular album trax. I know Black Sabbath had a few that they refused to play live and some that just simply didn't get played...what SG songs fall into this void? ~^v^OzzY^v^~ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Sep 1997 13:39:58 -0700 From: McMahon Potvin Subject: JORDAN!!!!!!
