"i mean dont get me wrong, i hope im as dead wrong as you can get." ya see, the way i figure it, we are not the norm of sg fans. we are the elite, we are the proud, we are the few, we are SOMMSTERS !!!! christ, i bet we have material from sg that A&M doesnt evan know exists. i mean think about it... have you ever herd of a sg song to exist that "we" (as a collective) dont have? yeah, there are a few mythalogical songs still floating around out there, like that ocean fronts one (is that the name) and cleaning my gun... besides that, what else is there? the vault at A&M filled with unreleased goodies? yeah, it may exist, but why would they crack it open now??? they wouldnt. what could A&M possibly offer us? another remix of FOBD? the space jam splice of the straw that broke the rhinosaurs back double starship trooper steven fisk remix of one minute of siclence? think about it... this greatest hits is being assembeled, packaged, and marketed for the populous, the majority, not us. (and for everyone whos ready to pipe in at this point that "well then why did management contact somms to get opinions on the whole thing" my answer is, because they are smart... all they had to do was place one email in the hands of the most elite sg fans on earth to get back a wealth of information... this thing is gonna sell like hot cakes to the dude who a few years ago was rocking out to outshined on the radio, then forgot the song existed. its gonna sell to the little chickies (no offense) who sat home in the summer of 94-95 on there vacation from grade school watching the BHS video 500000000 times a day. and hell, itll probably evan see a few copies to the person that always knew that sg was awsome, but just didnt devote the time to get in to em'. and its gonna sell to the name buyers.. "hey that says soundgarden on it, im gonna buy it" my point being...... the guy behind the desk making the decision isnt thinking about lola 96 when he was crowd surfing while my wave was blasting in the backround, chris not evan 20 feet away. he isnt thinking about how "nowhere but you" eases the pains of a lost girlfriend. he isnt thinking about how superknown changed his life..... and i quote, yes, you guessed it (puff dady) "its all about the ben-ja-mins babey." mike. But there's something more: even when it's Chris' voice what catches your attention, it's te other's work what makes you keep going on listening to other things from the band (i think that phrase doesn't make sense in english). What I mean is, i'm sure you've heard lots of good voices, and that makes you think 'hey, i like it'. But that's just the first impression. When you listen to that song for the second time, you start paying attention to other things, and you have to admit that Kim's playing is ... An example: Reef. The singer has a very bad voice, but it sounds cool, powerful, and you think that's cool. But when you listen to the song again, you realize it's so simple, it's so... and you stop listening to that thing. Understood? I hope. If you have the Soundgarden CD Book you will notice Chris wearing his in a lot of pictures so you will have something to go by. But anyway, here is how I did it: First, take the fork and some pliers and bend the 2 outside spears forward about 3 cm from the end. The 2 outside spears should now look like an L and a backwards L from the side. Now take the pliers again and bend the part that's bent forward to the outside. Now when you look at it straight the 2 outside spears should form a L and a backwards L. Now comes the tough part. If you have a clamp then use it to clamp down the handle part of the fork. If you don't, then weigh it down with something extremely heavy. Now take a screwdriver and start twisting the 2 inside spears around each other with it. Make sure that one tong isn't just getting wrapped around the other. Now you have to cut off the handle. I don't know how you will do this if you don't have a saw. Anyway, eyeball about 2 cm of the handle on the side of the tongs, and cut the rest off. In other words, cut off the entire handle leaving about 2 cm. Now take the stub that is left and wrap it around a nail, giving you a place to attach the string. All that is left is to find something to hang it from, I am using a long leather string. Beads would probably work well too. If anyone has any questions mail me and I will be glad to help. BTW, does anyone know where I might find a Soundgarden logo charm for a necklace? Sorry the title is from this really awful poet in Washington Square Park that screams that all the time. He screams it really loud and it becomes a catch phrase for everyone around him. Anyway, I do have a poem for you. But that comes in a few seconds. BTW..... Greetings and Salutations SOMMSters, Okay juat a few lil quickies here before we get to the main deal. Last night I was rhyming with Mrs. Bunchypants on the AOL ims (proud to admit that my mom did not pick this server, I did, so there, i admitt that I am an AOL junky). And it popped in my head that a while back I was watching the 1994 MTV video awards dealie post show dealz w/ my oldest buddy (who is now in Boston -=[ damnit everyone i love is there). So Kim and Chris are talking to Ms. Tab (who I no longer hate after meeting her, she's one cool chiquita). So she says something that rhymed, and at the same time me and Chris go, she/you just rhymed! Of course you can tell who said she, and who said you. Anyway, I just thought that was really cool, cuz i'm obsessed with rhyming. Okay, I'm pretty sure there was another quicky in here somewhere, but I guess it will have to wait. Now, on to the poem......but first a lil backround on it. I think it was the summer of '96, I was in my Sequential Math II Summer School Class. And I had just recently seen our boys at lolly for loozers. So I had the superunknown cd, sitting there just really bored and I decided to make a small lil diddy poem out of the songs on it. Months passed by and I was talking with some friends about it, and I went a lil crazy, and started doing it with all the cds i had on me, we thought this was extremely cool. I went home, and went legally insane with it, and did every cd i had (which is very much under 100, maybe even under 50, but I doubt it) but i still haven't finished it, cuz I get more cds, it becomes The Neverending Poem. So about the title, me and my buddy Ashley (the one who likes to make fantasies w/ me) decided the mega band would be Soundgarden, Jane's Addiction, Porno for Pyros, and the Chillis. Yes we know that is silly, that's why we did it, we know that their styles are all VERY different, so quit yer whining already. So I now present to you............ Jane's Addiction to Porno for Chilli Peppers in the Sound Garden (pretty ain't it? it's the name of the mega band) So let me drown in my wave, cuz i fell on black days, like the mailman, who's alive in the superunknown with his head down....in the black hole (you go mr. mailman!!!) sun (it's supposed to be like son, ya know, hoodie talk) he's with the spoonman, and he was in a limo wreck on the day i tried to live, and all i had was a kickstand, we only had half a chance and it was just like suicide...... okay, that goes into the fugees and other artists, so then we come up to tori amos, which is right before....... yes anastasia (had to put it in), now say hello to heaven and don't reach down for the hunger strike, by its forces i'm pusing forward back, and for that you call me a dog in times of trouble as you clutch your wooden jesus, your savior, who leaves you in a four walled world, but hey, it's an all night thing... and so.....after that comes jamiroquai's "return of the space cowboy" and a whole bunch of other songs and then this one has no pause for other cds in it..... What? Would? would you take a breath and smell the seasons of my dyslexic heart, we'll dance in the battle of evermore with the chole dancers who have a crown of thorns, they have the birth ritual to the state of love and trust, and it just gets so overblown, then yer always waitin for somebody and thinkin and hopin may this be love, hopin that it didn't happen, that i nearly lost you, and it hurts so bad i just want to drown maybe hang myself with a pretty noose, or maybe even around the rhinosaur, he has a zero chance, just like me and dusty ty cobb, i just wanna blow up the outside world with a burden in my hand, i was never named ya know, i take an applebite just thinkin of the never mahcine forever about how it gets tighter and tighter, so we pay no attention to it, but when the switch opens, apparently it's an overfloater of an unkind, in boot camp they keep me in a rusty cage that is outshined, i watch the slaves and bulldozers who stand in their jesus christ pose, and they've all got face pollution, so somewhere, that somewhere is where i keep searching with my good eye closed for a room a thousand years wide, that gives me a mind riot and i just sit there drawing flies and sipping holy water, this just creates new damage to myself, but it's the ugly truth, and you got your hands all over a gun, i bet it gives you a power trip, you get on the snake, and you're full on kevin's mom, i bet it's loud love, and i've done no wrong, no right, but you, you've uncovered what it is, just....big....dumb...sex, and you're full on it. after that comes no alternative, but i didn't put it in cuz i forgot the meaning to effigy then and now, so i don't wanna put it in lookin like a dick. now i have not touched this poem since like february, and i still didn't get all my cds on it, and i've aquired some cds since that time, so yet this neverending poem is not up to date, but it shall continue, because i still have to include ultramega ok and screaming life/fopp i have them written down on the list of cds in the poem. and there are three cds before them, including the deep six bands cd, that must be written down from the end before they can be done (i can't even understand that line, disreguard it) and a whole bunch of cds afterthat. then after that i have to add truly and hater and some sinlges on vinyls like flower (not clolored), tdittl, jcp, and outshined, and then the jimi hendrix thing and so much more. most of the cds that i have haven't made the poem yet, they are just floatin around cuz i have to match them up w/ the cds before and after them. well whatever, i don't care if you didn't like this, but if you did cheers. sorry, it all just started from being bored in math class. i know the grammar in it is a lil silly, but damnit that's the way i want it. well, much luv to ya all, take care and all that jazz!!! Don't assume, please, because Mr. Nacho you are WAY off!! When I listen to 'Tallica I listen for drums and sometimes guitars and bass also.. i don't really care about vocals that much unless he goes, "Ruff!!" like a dog :) With 'Garden.. I listen to drums and bass more than anything.. next would be all guitars and then any vocals because if you do something special with your voice i'm gonna be interested.. Chris does have a very interesting range and when I first listen to a 'Garden album I just plain 'old listen. Then something might catch my attention like a kewl drum beat or great bass tab or a guitar solo or vocals that seem to do this topsy turvy thing that kicks ass.. It depends... And yes, MAYBE MOST of us feel the way you do but I don't at all. Yes, Chris' vocals are attention getting, but it's not vocals that make me listen. The music is important because they make and support those lyrics.. Chris' lyrics, or let's just say Chris' vocals, are not what make me listen to SG because he needs something to support himself... you know, it's just for me, I need a packaged thing.. when I listen to music, everything has to at least support one another or i won't be interested.. like the vocals can't like be worthier than the bass and the drums can't be .... you know... nevermind.. forget i even wrote this.. so much is on my mind and i have been disappointed in the past 2 days so... forgive me, please. Ben you gotz more hours, cuz yer all west coast dealie, but have a good time too! Subject: Various and Sundry I have some things to say that some of the "veterans" may not like. First, exactly when were these "good old days" on the list that people wax nostalgic about every time things get nasty? I've been on this list for almost 2 years and what I've noticed is that it goes through several pretty distinct phases on a pretty regular basis. We'll be going along rather nicely and then all of a sudden people get really pissy and we crab for a while, then things get really quiet and boring for a while until someone rattles our chains and things pick up again. During the time I've been on the list I think I've seen a bit more nastiness than pleasantness (is that a word) but it seems to me to be much like life: it changes all the time. People get so bent out of shape when someone voices an unpopular opinion. Has this list gotten so that it has its own PC set of rules? So what if someone thinks Ben broke up the band. As long as someone states something as an opinion and not a fact, that makes it a target for discussion (and perhaps flames if you must) but it doesn't make the person a total pariah. In the beginning I blamed Ben too, simply because his behaviour was the most obnoxious. However after much thought and soul-searching I believe Chris probably initiated things. As people have mentioned, his "style" as seen on many B-sides and side project things is very different than Soundgarden's sound. I think he wanted to move in another direction. And as much as you all don't want to admit it, if Chris left Soundgarden there was no way they could have gone on as Soundgarden. I know this is a really sore subject here, but I don't care. The band went through several bass players without any big uproar or change of style. I think they could have changed drummers too without that big of a crisis. Don't get me wrong, I really like Matt, and I think he's a great drummer, but I still think he could have been replaced and they still would have been Soundgarden. Kim I don't know, because his sound was pretty important, so maybe he couldn't be replaced either. But we need to be realistic. Losing one of the musical parts would have been sad for us because we've come to love the band as we knew it (although I lived through several bass players without any lasting scars) but the band could have continued on. Now I'm not saying all three of them could be replaced, leaving just Chris and three new people, and still be the same. But if Ben or Matt or maybe even Kim, if one of them had left, the band could have survived. However, if Chris had left - the chief lyricist and lead vocalist, carrying the "signature sound" in his voice and heart, they could not have been Soundgarden. Maybe I'm just so blinded because Chris is by far my favorite. To the people moaning that we've spent too much time talking about Chris' projects: I personally don't care what the rest of them do. Yeah, shoot me, so what. That's how I feel. No, Chris wasn't Soundgarden - but Soundgarden couldn't have been Soundgarden without Chris. But who knows, maybe I'll hate what he does solo. Guess we'll all have to wait and see. Since some of you are probably seeing red by now, let me continue. I think it is pretty unrealistic and pretentious to expect new list members to do "research" in the archives to make sure they know who the "veterans" are. In other words, you want them to know who they should not cross, and who the "untouchables" are. I love when new people DON'T know who the oldies are, and they shoot straight at them not knowing that "it just isn't done". I think we NEED to be more honest on this list. Apparently its verboten to have an opinion on the break-up that differs from the majority, or to think Chris was the most important member of the band. WHO CARES????? Its only an opinion! Why do people get so bent out of shape? Maria I must single you out for a moment: > I and other people here, DO ignore shit we don't wanna read, but for > me and others when it comes to stuff like that, you can't just > contain yourselves.. do you really think > not one person on this list will take in that post and be like "oh, > well, another screw soul.. Seems to me that's exactly what MOST of the people on the list did - I know I did. Sure, there are some issues that burn me, but something that is totally out of left field, or is old news, I just blow off - figuring the person will eventually "see the light" or get torn apart in the mean time by those of us with less tolerance for differences of opinion. I belong to another mailing list where flaming is against list rules. At first I thought this was idiotic, but when I started seeing truly fascinating discussions instead of flame wars I changed my mind. When you can't flame it forces you to express your differences of opinion in much more creative ways. Just something to think about. > We take action.. because it's a mailing list and we > don't wanna see stuff like that being posted! Exactly who is the "we" you are talking about - certainly not me and the many others who didn't get fired up about this one. As far as I'm concerned people can post whatever they want. And I admire people for taking the risk of posting an unpopular idea, even if its only out of naivete. > SOMMS is a SOUNDGARDEN mailing list. NOT a Chris Cornell mailing > list..only on those list do you post stuff like that.. here we don't > wanna here it because if you are on this list you just might wanna > think about supporting the efforts of the band as a whole not as a > fourth. Ahem - Soundgarden is no longer a band. As far as I know the rule has always been that posts must be Soundgarden related. Since Chris is (was) a member of the band, talking about him in any context must be OK. Since when did YOU start not only speaking for the entire list, but also interpreting the rules for us Man Oh Man, now I'm getting bitchy. Mandy wrote: > I dont know..... I think I could get into some secret fantasies about > Kim.... :-) Yes, now there is a thought. Unfortunately speaking about fantasies on the list is another of those things a few people decided was a no-no. I know there are lots of us who would LOVE to be able to post raunchy stuff, but....Hey maybe we could start a fanfic list where we could post that kind of stuff - thats how they do it on the other list I'm on. The list itsef is "PG" but the fanfic is a free-for-all. Would anyone be interested in something like that? (At least those of you who aren't thinking up death threats at this very moment) Ahhhh, I feel much better. The notion of Chris' voice along with Les' bass and/or nasaly vocals makes my nose run. As for the whole puffy combs idea . . . I sincerely hope it never happens with any member of SG. Also, I'd like to see Ben and Jello Biafra get into the groove together. I'd buy six copies of whatever they released. - Jimi ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Sep 1997 21:43:18 +1000 From: Ruth Emsden Subject: pretty noose & flower singles this is mainly for melbourne sommsters. if you are looking for a copy of the pretty noose or flower single they are on sale at missing link(flinders lane in the city, off elizabeth st) there are two pretty noose singles for $8 each and the flower single is $14, i think. just thought you might like to know. ruth ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Sep 1997 23:35:42 -0500 From: William Flanders Subject: Re: Chris and ?? together >As for the whole puffy combs idea . . . And I really think "I'll be missing you" is heresy. I hope Soundgarden doesn't have the "rap appeal" that bands like Zeppelin did. Apparently they've already succombed to techno appeal with Prodigy's record.
