The first time I heard Soundgarden mentioned on a tv show was on one God-awful program called Sweet Valley High! One of my friends called me suddenly and demanded that I turn my TV on and watch SVH, so I did, and there's half the population of Sweet Valley fighting to get tickets to the upcoming Soundgarden concert. The episode ended with one of the twins chasing after someone with tickets, and they didn't show any of the "concert" or play any Soundgarden. :( And congrats to Seth and Justin on an absolutely wonderful song of the month, I agree with Niki, Mind Riot is one of those songs that can touch you in places that you never even knew existed. It blew me away the first time I heard it, it was like a lullaby that sent shivers down my spine. Looking forward to hearing how Chris manages Ave Maria... Tessa "People with nothing better to do will probably object to Soundgarden" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Aug 1997 17:50:45 -0700 From: John Scully Subject: Re: mind riot: song of the century Well Niki, I know exactly what you're talking about, the same thing happens to me with head down, as at the concert I went to in January, I don't know why exactly, but I was in such awe to be seeing Soundgarden, I could hardly even remember any of it because I was in such shock I think. But one song that I have a vivid memory of is head down, and every time I hear it I remember the concert. Especially the bit when Ben hops on the drums with Matt for the end of the song. So every time my CD player lands on head down, I tend to skip it, so that I never get sick of it, and treat myself to it once a fortnight. As some people say, you shouldn't have too much of a good thing. Lance ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Sep 1997 13:15:51 -0400 From: Enrique Olavarria Subject: Slaves & Bulldozers this is my favourite soundgarden song. it has the best lyrics and best moment (the "bleed your heart out" part) of all soundgarden songs. it is so different from all of the other tunes ben has contributed on. probably because chris wrote the music with him. i think that most good lyrics refer to something more complete than just an event or specific situation. that is why i find chris' comments when asked about the meaning of a song more funny than enlightening. i think he's just trying to get the question out of the way with a quick answer. the bird (like suicide), "killing your boss" (mailman), and a few others. if he tried to explain the real meaning these songs have for him, he wouldn't be able to, he would take too long or no one would understand it anyway. of course there are a lot of direct soundgarden lyrics like "karaoke", for example, but it's the others i tend to like more. i wish i could pick titles for the songs i write as well as chris does. "slaves and bulldozers" is a great one. playing with words. the title has the same irony (?) as most of the lines (bulldozers do the work slaves used to do so having slaves & bulldozers wouldn't make sense or maybe it would but in a weird kind of way. whatever). so: SLAVES AND BULLDOZERS everything i gave is what i need virgin eyes and dirty looks everything i've held is what i've freed etc. other great titles by mr. cornell include: outshined, searching with my good eye closed, face pollution, mind riot, drawing flies. and that's just Badmotorfinger. heroes del silencio is a good band, don't like their lyrics that much though. and this is not soundgarden related, so i'd better go. bye. rueda, fortuna! enrique. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Sep 1997 13:56:47 +0000 From: Kathie and David Subject: Re: An Attempt at Intelligence Lance asked: >How do we feel about Chris Cornell appearing on "A Very Special >Christmas III"??? I think alot of people are blowing this Ave Maria thing out of proportion. Yes, having Chris appear on this album makes you wonder which direction he's heading, but hey, it's a job ;) Plus, don't the proceeds go to charity or something? As far as the choice of material, I never questioned it. Just because Chris doesn't like organized religion doesn't mean he can't like the music associated with it. I too am a "recovering Catholic" and believe me the wounds run deep. However, I still sing traditional Christmas carols and I think alot of the traditional music in general is beautiful. And just because Chris doesn't believe in the image of God as an old man in a white robe doesn't mean he doesn't believe in his own interpretaion of a God. Personally I consider myself to be a very *spiritual* person, but my image of God is very different than that of most people, and I too shun organized religion in general. But you can be *religious* (defined by Webster as "relating or devoted to the divine or that which is held to be of ultimate importance") and/or *spiritual* without believing in organized religion. For some reason I think Chris is probably a very spiritual person too. And who knows, since Ave Maria is a tribute to Mary maybe this is Chris' way of honoring women (the goddess if you will). I'm curious as hell how he's going to interpret it. Hi I was going through my brothers old comics yesterday and I found a comic called Soundgarden. Basically it goes through the history of SG and also has a bit about Pearl Jam. It is really well drawn and is pretty funny but it doesn't have a front cover. I was wondering if any of you have this comic or have heard about it? On the back inside cover it has a list of other bands that they have done comics on and there are some great bands on there such as Alice in Chains, The Who, Led Zep, Metallica. It is a pretty old comic but I'm gonna see if I can get some of the other comics as well. Yes, Ben, Kim, Chris, Susan and Matt are strong-willed people, but in the past I've been a bit irked by the A&M "singles" that contain one or two versions of a song or songs I already have and then throw in *1* that I don't have. So of course I have to buy it just for that one song. That is my fear as far as this compilation. Will A&M take advantage of our loyalty by putting a bunch of things we already have on a compilation with *1* song we don't, knowing we will buy it no matter how shitty the deal is? I know the band is against that, but that hasn't stopped A&M in the past. And Rita's quote makes it seem pretty certain that that is what is going to happen. I can't help it, this whole thing just turns my stomach. Its like A&M has them right where they want them, and what can they do? What have they got to bargain with now? I'm not criticizing the band. It seems like a "Slaves & Bulldozers" situation to me. I bought _declaration of conformity_ two days ago, and I like it quite a bit. I haven't had time to digest much of it yet - even though it is only about forty minutes long - but what I have heard so far sounds wonderful. the only disappointment is the number of instrumentals (six out of a possible fourteen); more vocals from zed and ted would have been appreciated. other than that, everything's peachy. makes me wish someone would pull their finger out and release a new hater record... in other late-breaking news, there will be no sotw this fortnight, thanks to work, uni and other commitments. the text in question is already half complete, though, and should be out at the beginning of next week. hopefully I'll be able to wrestle it into a more weekly format after that, too. and even though it is more tangential than can be imagined, please make an effort to listen to and/or buy the new brad record, _interiors_, as soon as you can. it is one beautiful piece of music, better than just about anything else you'll find on the shelves this year. trust me. justin ----- you can spend your time alone, redigesting past regrets or you can come to terms and realise you're the only one who can forgive yourself, oh yeah makes much more sense to live life in the present tense -words by eddie vedder ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Sep 1997 23:18:13 -0500 From: Geoff Subject: Re: middle names??
