Chris: No, because the interpretation of what God - or a god - is, I wouldn't have. I don't see some white, grey haired old man sitting on a throne throwing lightning bolts at us when we least expect it. Request: Many of your songs...trade in dark, apocalyptic imagery. Does any of that flair from your having grown up a Catholic? Chris: Yeah, I'm sure some of it does, but you wouldn't catch it in an entire song. Like 'Jesus Christ Pose' people think is an angry religious reference, but it doesn't have a thing to do with that. Request: Have you put your religious training behind you, or is it something you still think about a lot? Chris: No, it isn't. I feel sorry for the people who honestly swallow it. To me. they're fish. I don't wanna be a fish. I am quite curious as to what he will do with it. So what if it doesn't fit someone's idea of his *image*? Soundgarden was never about image anyway. That was one thing I admired about them. I'm sure that whatever Chris chooses to do he will do well, and my tastes are probably wide enough to appreciate whatever that will be. Open minds, people. I agree that the studio version of Little Joe isn't up to snuff, but what about the performance on Motorvision? It's one of my favorite parts of the video. I promise that it will be brief. previously released songs I would like to see on there - hunted down (the band's first single) nothing to say (maybe the best song on their first ep) flower (can't leave this one off) beyond the wheel (nor this, for sheer ferocity) hands all over (sg in a nutshell, circa 1989) gun (early definition of soundgarden live) outshined (too memorable not to include this) jesus christ pose (prototypical soundgarden song?) new damage (personal favourites play a part here) head down (here too, although this sort of song needs to be recognised, appreciated and included) the day I tried to live (too good a song to forget) fourth of july (best of the heavies?) zero chance (shows the range and emotion soundgarden embraced at the end of their career) overfloater (melancholia needs to be represented) boot camp (good closer) I choose most of these songs because I feel that on their own and as a collective unit they are representative of soundgarden and their music. that is probably the most important part of tracking the record; whacking 'black hole sun' and 'blow up the outside world' on there and leaving good and reasoned thought behind just won't cut it (as I'm sure we'll all agree). I believe the flow of the album and the portrayal of the band are of highest importance. remixed versions of the _ultramega ok_ tracks come a close second . non-album tracks would be a bonus, a bonus I for one would like to collect on. songs like 'hiv baby', 'blind dogs', 'into the void' and 'cold bitch' would all fit in there rather neatly, although there would be some overlap in terms of styles and sounds. unpublished songs like 'christi', 'ocean fronts' and 'cleaning my gun' would also be welcome, even if they did repeat already placed tones. live material, whether it be on the one disc or as a second disc (for a limited time only!) would be interesting, but not essential. sure, they were a great live band, but I don't know if the continuity would be as smooth if every once in a while a live song replete with screaming hootchies wondered into the mix. I have personally already witnessed the release of a post-humous "best of" for living colour, a release that included some live material. to be quite frank, it didn't sound right at all. if the live stuff is important to the band or to a&m, I would vote for a second disc or even a full release of it's own (not to cash in, mind you). cover art is an interesting question, as art for all of soundgarden's records was carefully screened and calculated. they were, after all, artists. something from either charles peterson or frank kozik would be cool, but I don't know if we could get that. another silhouette might be in order... looking at the track listing again, it seems to lean towards chris' contributions. is that a mistake? anyway, that's my take on it. not quite as broad as those posted by other sommsters, but mine in the end. I sincerely hope that when released, the compilation suits in order of priority - 1. the band; 2. the fans; 3. the company. let's cross our fingers and pray to the little sound garden sculptures I know we all have in our rooms for a pleasant outcome. justin ----- in your real life, treat it like it's special in your real life, try to be more kind in your real life, think of those that love you in this real life, try to be less blind words by vernon reid ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Sep 1997 14:08:05 -0500 From: Vince Varkey Subject: live through this.. Here are my thought's regarding a SG compilation. Read Justin's last post. That pretty much sums it up. Like others on the list, this greatest hits thing seems a little quirky. Obviously, this is a corporate decision. I can't imagine SG coming up with this idea initally. A greatest hits album seems very un-sg like to me. Leave the greatest hits packages to Van Halen or the Eagles. But hey, if it's going to be made, it's going to made and it should at least stand as a testament to the greatest rock and roll band of the 90's. I was reading something the other day regarding a Nirvana greatest hits CD. Novoselic said that although they had a ton of unreleased material, they wanted to wait a while before releasing it so they could take advantage of the latest technology, like DVD applications etc. He then said that he was planning to make it a 3-4 CD set. This is something to think about when it comes to this greatest hits thing. Although this smacks of overkill, how cool would it be to be able to play a DVD with rare live SG performances throughout their long career, to be able to see interviews with the band, etc, and then to have a second CD with the standard greatest hits on it? Why make it simply a musical CD? I don't see why they don't go ahead and run with the full multimedia approach. That would be much more fun to me. And with AITS already under their belts, this wouldn't be foreign territory to the band and going through interviews when AITS came out, they seemed to enjoy it. So why not? Hey if Nirvana intends to do this, then why not SG. Make this greatest hits album something to remember. -vince ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Sep 1997 15:26:47 -0400 From: Deborah Servey Subject: Re: Ave Maria Karen Cornell says they are all "recovering Catholics"! Rolling Stone Online reported that A&M were 'pressuring' them... but also that one or more of them was 'pushing' A&M back for a B-sides compilation... That sounds like good, healthy negotiation to me. Ben, Kim, Chris and Matt (not to mention Susan) are all very strong-willed individuals, but they also, albeit sometimes reluctantly, understand the way the music business works. I'm sure they'll do their damndest to ensure it turns out, if nothing else, a little different from the usual Best of/Greatest Hits. Asking for our opinions/suggestions is surely proof of that. Besides, you could argue that they were 'pressured' to record extra B-sides for us greedy Brits and Aussies when they didn't really want to use extra songs that way. But knowing that, how many of us bought those singles anyway? And they got their own back with Splice of Space Jam, Jerry Garcia's Finger and Exit Stonehenge, didn't they? :-) Deb ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Sep 1997 17:13:30 -0400 From: Rachel Potter Subject: My fav chris cornell quotes from this online chat thing Question : What do you like to do while on tour when you are not playing? All, It is interesting to see how many of us dislike Little Joe. Yes, I too was a listener not too fond of this one in earlier stages *bows head*, but once I heard/saw it on Motorvision it gained alot of appreciation from my point of view. Especially when Chris does that low growly thing with it. The yelping thing on Screaming Life is _interesting_, but I don't think I could listen to a whole 5 minutes of it and still love the song. In the words of many a grunge dewd: Live, -it rocks. Well thats my take on it. Okay, I haven't _totally_ dissed Little Joe, so I can't be seen as whining [can I?] when I say that... -The award for most 'unloved' work by SG is ...[drum roll]... The FOPP remix. The reverberating tin sound, along with the politician thing ...uhh. FOPP [does anyone else find themselves typing FOOP everytime they try this?] is an excellent song, one of my favourites, and Soundgarden perform it really well [surprise surprise] so I spose thats why I just really don't like the remix. I feel like it does the song no justice. BTW, I saw Mikes post about Never The Machine Forever ...I _love_ that song! I thought I was a 'Soundgarden Favourite'! The drumming [9/4 I think -correct me if I'm wrong] is really powerful and Chris's voice is utterly mindblowing, not to mention the fact that Kims lyrics are excellent. Right-o. Thats enough from me. Hey, while I'm here, could anyone tell me what IMHO means? I can be somewhat of an imbecile at some times, especially when it comes to shortened things. Just humour me. First, remember I'M NOT CHRIS CORNELL, but i'll try to give you an explanation, just because i, like a christian, don't find that so strange. Maybe he just find JC like somebody wonderful, i mean, he fucked all the important people at the time, he did what he wanted to, being coherent his movements with what he said. And somehow that makes him a superstar, and Chris feels really fucked when somebody says 'stare at me, i look as Jesus Christ, and i'm as good and important as him (or maybe more). Yeah, that makes sense. Maybe what Chris was doing with those songs was making a distinction that it's people that cause problems, not concepts , like religion. After all, it's people in "Jesus Christ Pose" that are insulting Christianity by egotistically portraying themselves as the savior of all humankind. And it's people who take some of the ideals of Christianity and hit others over the head with them, like in "Hand Of God." Thanks to all who emailed me about this. I've gained even more respect for Chris Cornell's astute poetic senses. Later, Mike Apple ******************************************************************** If music were literature... Has anyone here on the list heard of the Laserium? It's a laser show that plays at the Observatory by Griffith Park in Los Angeles. Well they were having a Lollapalaser show and I went to see it with my friend. The show was pretty good when they were playing artists like AIC, RHCP, NIN, and Nirvana, but when Soundgarden came on the laser artist messed up. They played the song "Spoonman" which was cool, but the laser images sucked. I was so pissed off. For all the other bands the laser images were amazing, but for SG there were just little crappy lasers going around. The laser artist basically did the same little (and I mean little) laser image through out the song. It seemed like the guy was testing out his laser equipment rather then putting on a show. I went to the Laserium all happy and excited because I thought that the show would have been rad with Soundgarden, but it wasn't. Has anyone else gone to the Lollapalaser show? If you did, what did you think of it? Well that's all for now. Peace, love, and SG. Sarah ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Sep 1997 00:02:46 -0400 From: "Carol C."
