Chris Cornell: "It was inspired by the last gig the Grateful Dead played in Seattle. Several Dead fans sat behind our rehearsal space and made a lot of noise all day. So then we robbed Jerry Garcia's grave and we stole his finger and we put it in a mason jar. And we've been arguing ever since at to whether he's left-handed." You can't tell much about Ben's mood from the video, because there is hardly any Ben in that video! I, on the other hand, hardly took my eyes off him all night. I noticed no discernible difference in his mood or approach to any of the material. He was rather subdued in general that night, compared with what we think of as his typical antics, but he played very intently and artfully. I was quite impressed with his musicianship. He spent much of the time right up at the edge of the stage playing to the audience and making a lot of eye contact. And he did do a little bit of goofing off, too, and trying to make Kim laugh. There was an aloofness about him, but he didn't seem 'down' to me. He seemed maybe a little bored during JCP. They all did. Any wonder? How many zillion times have they played it? And there was no LTL material in this show, so this does make me wonder what show you meant. Jen Grover >> Yea it was the Fairfax show and I was there too...it just struck me while I was watchin the tape. The LTL stuff...I was thinkin about this from the show at American University in DC the year before. I don't know, it may be so subtle that nobody else notices, but he just semmed a lot less animated and a lot more bored. ~^v^OzzY^v^~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Aug 1997 11:51:43 -0500 From: Barbarba Strong Subject: Jerry Garcia's Finger Somebody asked where the title "Jerry Garcia's Finger" came from, and I remembered reading something about that on Seth's site, so I looked it up and found two answers, the first one obviously being a joke: From the SPINonline interview with Chris and Kim, November 1995: SowndGardn: (burping in the background) The days we recorded the jam versions of the CD+ were the same days that the Grateful Dead were playing in Seattle. Several GD fans sat behind our rehearsal space and made a lot of noise all day. So then we robbed Jerry Garcia's grave, and we stole his finger and put it in a mason jar. And we've been arguing ever since as to whether he's left handed. Blah Blah Blah, June 1996: ...one of the B sides for the Pretty Noose single is called Jerry Garcia's Finger, a reference to the late guitarist's truncated middle digit, lost in an argument with a chainsaw..."We wrote that as a space jam on the day the Grateful Dead played their last show in Seattle. I originally called it Jerry Garcia's Dead, but Finger was better. I liked the idea of the Dead. They gave all those acid casualties hope..." The Blah article with Chris is great. Go check it out if you haven't already. That's my lesson for the day. B ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Aug 1997 17:49:09 -0400 From: Maria Joseph Subject: SG Concert on 98 Rock Hi, it's me again... Remember that post I did on the concert of SG on 98 Rock? Well I've been getting a few responses for me to trade with people.. that's kewl, it's just that I have a little bit more info of it than I did before: First and foremost...... Setlist track number 2 is NOT, I repeat NOT Slaves and Bulldosers.. I had the wrong song in mind for some reason. Track 2 is GUN... so.. Next... It's said that it was SG at the Hollywood Paladium for those of you who wanted the location and the date is ? ?, 1991.. not 92... Westward One caught this concert and recorded and 98 Rock evidently must have obtained it... And the mentioned something of R.I.T magazine (not RIP), but don't worry about it... Also.. I was listening the 98 that same night of the concert and they mentioned something about SG's home videos on something called Best of Foundations 4... I have no clue what this is and if it even exist, but I did hear that correctly I do believe (I didn't even know they had home vids out..) BTW.... I started high school Monday.. A freshman, and I did my english non fiction project on SG and my teacher had a problem with it because I didn't write it on the form she gave out.. but I did that because I knew before I started that I wouldn't have room.. so I tried to fix it but wasn't successful and just handed it in the way it was and then she actually looked at the report and realizes how many pages I had and she said it was ok :) And for Spanish tonight, I'm supposed to get a celebrity's pic and write about them.. so I'll pick Chris, since I happen to know more about him than the other guys... Um.... I think that's all.. Oh, no, wait!! I changed my sched today after waiting for hours (literally) so that I may quit the clarinet after 6 years to learn to play the drums!!!! I wanna be as good as Matt and Lars, even though that would take the masters themselves to TRY and accomplish :) (their is only one original :) So, I'll probably love that :) And... my SS teacher wanted to know our nicknames we went by in class and I was thinking of having the teachers called me Bunchypants (heheh) but I didn't so I put down that I don't go by one but I like the name Bunchypants and that there was a story behind it :) SO.... instead of Maria.. I'll sign my posts as Bunchypants.. unless I get real lazy and don't feel like typing Bunchypants... Ok, older people than me :) -BUNCHYPANTS ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Aug 1997 17:53:09 -0400 From: Maria Joseph Subject: SG Concert again... Me again... actually when I think about it... It was the RIP magazine thingie... and Mike also says so... but it still sounds kewl :) -BUNCHYPANTS ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 27 Aug 1997 to 28 Aug 1997 ************************************************
