But what really is the point some of you are making? Is the point in record collecting to collect rare and expensive objects, or to build a collection of music that is meaningful to you? Is the point of releasing these things to somehow weed out the weaklings from the "true fans" by hiding a few treasures and seeing who has the money and stamina to acquire them? I can only think of Giant Sand. They decided to release all their albums as very limited editions. They thought this was akin to a limited edition run of art prints, which is an interesting concept, but the result is that I have never been able to find a Giant Sand album, nor do I know anyone who has one, and I have only heard 2 of their songs, ever. Now, this is the extreme for certain, but suppose SG had decided to do that with one of their albums. Would you be thrilled at the prospect of the hunt, or pissed off because there was a new album out that you couldn't get your hands on, try as you might? And if you did find one, would you really be thrilled if you had to pay many times over what the original owner paid? It's something to ponder. Is the value of these things for us really in the things themselves or in the notion of conquest? Yes, I seek out these things, I sometimes pay too much for them, and I feel a thrill when I find them. I'm even guilty of gloating over them. But at the same time I always think that maybe it shouldn't be this way. This is not a moral issue per se, but a personal one, and personally I think we should all have a fair chance at these lovely things without being taken advantage of. Did any of us get our CDs or cash or copies back? No. This is a response I got on Aug. 18 (!) from Kelly Lee (cdlis@msn.com), who is supposedly in touch with Skye: >>I talked to Skye and he told me he already sent out everything on Wed. before he left to California. Then I stayed in the SG public room and we picked out people we felt we SG fans by reading profiles, asking questions, etc... when Sgrdn27 left, o6z6z6y came in and helped me out.. then I took all the names we collected that night (about 8 or 9) and I sent them e-mail congradulating them and plus I sent them links to go to web pages and to sign onto SOMMS and the fan club.. I found a copy of the "Incescent Mace/Loco Mosquito (aka Flower)" 45 on red vinyl, #102. On the back it says track A is an early recording and track B is a 1988 outake. It's on Big 7 Inch Records, lists "PUNK" as percussionist (there's a pic of Matt tho so I guess it's a nickname), recorded and mixed at Reciprocal Recording, produced by Jack Endino & Soundgarden, background vox by Jack Endino. It's in a folded sleeve and the printing is all done in red. Soundgarden is spelt with two dots over the "A" (ya know like Motley Crue does the "U" & "O", I think they're called umlats but I'm not sure and I sure as hell don't know how to spell it). The cover has a pic of the band with Kim just starting to grow his hair out and a "Jailbait" Chris Cornell. The bottom right hand corner has a small circle that says "Colored Vinyl". Any clues???? It requires no downloading, no irc, nothing fancy. Once there's enough interest, we'll have to find out how to create an actual page for Sgarden--we can have a bulletin board on there and people can also choose it as something to belong to--it gets listed on your own member page. Until we actually create a venue, we can go into custom chat. Anyone who's joined or is thinking of joining, we need a really cool and very much Sgarden related name for our custom chat room! Also, neat feature--on your own member page, you can list fave Ffly members. I'm Riker20 on there.....if those of you who are going to try it will post your names, we can all add each other. Then when you sign on, the system tells you who of your faves are online too! I've never done chat before and maybe Firefly isn't the best system but I've met some of the nicest people on here, it's simple to use, and it is supposed to be a venue for entertainment interests....so think about it! At one time I was very much a "go after everything" type of collector, but I'm not anymore, and why would take too much of your time to touch upon. What good are limited editions? I'm not real sure. Far as I can see from this list, anyway, the stuff gives the finders bragging rights, which Jenna has said is just plain childish. I've also seen the attitude being picked up at times that b/c someone may have more limited eds than others THAT person is a more devoted or better fan. Again, in Jenna's words, just plain childish. Let me ask you a question I'd like to see debate on. WHO IS IT THAT DETERMINES THAT LIMITED EDITION STUFF IS WORTH SO MUCH? Yes, first you'll say the record company, and in some cases that may be. Once it's out of the record store tho, and is in circulation, who says it's worth $60 or whatever other prices I've seen on this list? As far as I'm concerned, it's people who are out to make a buck off of fans. I've been going to record shows for years, and the first thing I learned was never wear a shirt that proclaims who your fave band is b/c all the vultures will go after you! Also as far as I'm concerned, it's like people who SELL video for $25-50. Who said a recorded video is worth that much? Hop much does a blank tape cost, people? The prices get asked b/c fans like you are willing to pay them! I do have some limited edition Sgarden stuff but only b/c I found it at a cool record store that I get to maybe 4 times a year. I have an MLB single that's probably about priceless, but so what? I have a complete collection of of albums and singles from Trevor Rabin's past, stuff even he doesn't have, stuff that took me years to collect. Do any of you care about my Rabin stuff? No. Why? B/c you don't know who he is, etc. BUT to fans of his, that collection of mine would be worth over $1200, and that's a modest estimate considering some of it is from South Africa. What's the point? The point is, it's all in what you like and in what you WANT to collect. If you HAVE to have everything, then the limited stuff is worth it to you. All the individuals on here that whine because they are either 1.too lazy to actually get up and look for things or 2.have no money to actually buy them when they find em (I'm in the same boat here). As far as I'm concerned I got over complaining about the "life ain't fair" pout when I was in 2nd grade. Sure life sukz...I've seen stuff that I have no hope of ever buying cause I don't have the cash, but I know I can get it someway somehoww if I have the determination and want it so bad I can taste it. I don't sit in a corner and pitch a fit and expect the record companies to ruin the thrill of someone obtaining that piece by putting it on a major release thats going to be available until the next millenium. That's just plain selfish. Life's a bitch, prices are ridiculous and no, you probably won't ever have every little thing that ever existed in it's original "limited edition colored vinyl hand numbered imported" form, but if you want it bad enough then work for it and find someone willing to copy it for you. You'll have the music and you won't end up spoiling the collecting aspect for the rest of us. And no having more does not make you a better fan...and yes the "nah nah nah nah na" attitude sukz, but people can be utter fuking shits. I tend to let people know what I found so they can maybe feel a bit of the excitement that I felt when I found it, not so I can hold it over their heads...that's just not kewl. Here it is. Whoever has a recordable cd drive and a blank cd can do this. The owner of the recordable cd drive is sent b-sides/live/studio songs via other persons in MP3 format (CD Quality). He then copies them onto the cd. Along with the songs there could be full Soundgarden videos/interviews/live songs in mpeg format. There are almost 650 mb of space on a cd so you have the opportunity for a lot of different things, such as lyrics and other numerous text files involving Soundgarden. I think that this is a great idea! Let's keep this idea on the table. Who wants to get involved in this? I do. This can only work if there are people contributing to this greatfully. Thanks a lot. Then the comment was made that the band will have to get together again because all of them will run out of money and they need to pay the bills. Personally I would hate to see SG get back together just because they need money. If they ever do join up again I would hope it would be purely for the reason of making great music again. Not that I wouldn't buy the album if it was for money, I would just feel uncomfortable thinking that none of them really wanted to do it. What do you think? Haven't we gone through this before (a few months ago, if I remember correctly)? Sure, you're not doing this for profit -- you had damn well better not be -- but by making perfect, CD copies of officially released songs, you are doing Soundgarden a great disservice. When 'From The Mouth Of Decadence' was completed, it was a cassette-only project, and while that perhaps is not all too different, it was somehow more acceptable. More like a bunch of friends trading some tapes around so everyone gets to hear the tunes. And the fact that it was on cassette meant that if you saw the CDs that contained the original songs, you would be more likely to buy them. I've got the tapes, but I own every song I've ever found on CD as well. If you start doing this type of thing on CD, you're entering the realm of big-time bootleggers, the type who make money from sales of 'Supermainstream'. If I've got a CD full of b-sides, why would I ever purchase 20 separate CD singles to get the songs I don't have? Whether you agree with Soundgarden's method of releasing b-sides or not, and whether or not you feel you should have to shell out the cash for a whole bunch of CDs to get them, if you're making and distributing your own CD compilations of them, you are stealing from the band members' pockets. And don't give me the "I'm sure Chris Cornell can afford to lose a few cents to me" justification. It's still not right. -seth ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 21 Aug 1997 to 22 Aug 1997 ************************************************
