(2 pics of Ben, Kim and Matt and 3 of Chris). They are above a lot of very small pictures. A small line on the bottom of the poster reads that these pics were made by "Kirstin Callahan and Lance Mercer". At the right side of the bottom there is the badmotorfinger wheel. At the top of the poster there is written "SOUNDGARDEN" in the badmotorfinger font. Can someone tell me where and when these pictures were taken? What would really ROCK MY WORLD would be to have a "greatest hits" compilation a la "Mystery Science Theatre 2000." Granted, A&M will milk the entire deal by using only songs released as singles, but why not have the band voice over the entire CD with comments like, "Ooh, we recorded this one in the nude," and "Here comes Kim's solo--he's gettin' ready to play some FOOTBALL!" Figuring 650 MB per CD, we'd definitely need at least two of 'em. And I for one like the dual release idea--one a mainstream two CD set for the undiscriminating listener, and the other a three CD set (yes, Mr. Cafaro, you can charge more) for we, the Disciples of the Duct Tape Wallet. The third CD would be outtakes, demos, noyes, comments from the band, video, backward masking, etc. Cover art? None more black, ghosted, with either the BMF or the SG logo varnished in. Insert? Sixteen pages of full-color would be nice, but expensive. Album title? "Mr. Bunchy Pants--the Movie." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Aug 1997 09:11:05 -0700 From: Fetal Bliss Subject: Re: I can count it on my fingers... > > Maybe only in the liner. > > Soundgarden has never recycled their ideas. > > unless you are talking b-sides, which is another kettle of fish > entirely... Mmm... FISH! I love fish! In fact, I'm having some for dinner tonight! Well, let's be clear on the b-sides. Are we talking about remixes, overs, and live performances, etc., and/or LP releases and previously released b-sides appearing? Songs necessary to "fill" the single? Or is there an original SG b-side out there that was thought to be sincerely written but should have been an inspiration for "Karaoke"? I was just reading today's Seattle Times on-line and there is an article that announced a donation that all the members of SG, most of the members of Pearl Jam, and other assorted friends made to preserve some land in the Cascade foothills from the hands of the United Cascade Mining Company. There is a quote from Susan, but not from any of the guys. If you want to go read it, the addie is: http://www.seattletimes.com/extra/browse/html97/jamm_081997.html I thought it was very interesting and extremely cool. :) Life Rules! Nice going Soundgarden.... -------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1997 The Seattle Times, Today's News: Rockers' donation saves Cascade land Members of the popular rock bands Pearl Jam and Soundgarden sent sweet music to the ears of conservationists yesterday when they and their associates donated $400,000 for the purchase and preservation of 220 acres of pristine land in the Cascade Mountain foothills. The donation allowed the Land Conservancy of Seattle and King County, a conservation group, to buy the property from United Cascade Mining, its present owner. The acres are near Hardscrabble Creek next to the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area. The Land Conservancy has vowed to prevent any development that might environmentally damage the area, which harbors many types of wildlife such as eagles, mountain lions and elk. There's also timberlands and some old-growth forests. "Anytime you have successful artists willing to make this kind of substantial contribution, it obviously has a big impact," said Gene Duvernoy, spokesman for the Land Conservancy. The land, a forested area near North Bend, recently was valued at $500,000, although the Land Conservancy bought it for about $400, 000, Duvernoy said. The Land Conservancy had been negotiating with the mining company for about three years, Duvernoy said. The group viewed the purchase as crucial because the property is the last piece of privately owned land in the midfork valley of the Snoqualmie River. If the conservation group hadn't acquired the property, Duvernoy said, "It would likely have been used for resort or mining purposes." All the members of Soundgarden - a band that broke up in April - were involved in the project, including singer and guitarist Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron, as were a number of Pearl Jam's members, said Erin Haley, Soundgarden spokeswoman. Soundgarden manager Susan Silver said members of both of the Seattle-based groups saw the purchase as a chance to preserve the environment close to home. "Many of the band members are very ecologically minded," she said. "It's virtually in our back yard, and it means a lot of that area is going to be protected." Members of both bands couldn't be reached for comment. Friends and associates of the bands also contributed to the land purchase, including Brendan O'Brien, producer for both groups, and Al Carafo, the president of A & M Records. United Cascade Mining attorney Gary Abolofia said the company had been so happy to make the sale to the Land Conservancy that they sold it for $100,000 less than they could have received from another buyer. "(United Cascade Mining) said that if they could sell the area in a way that would sustain the environment, they'd do it," Abolofia said. "They're interested in preserving natural areas, too." --- by Sean Cavanagh. ------------------------------------------------------- enjoy, mind riot ____ there must be something else there must be something good far away...far away from here... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SOUNDGARDEN 1984-1997 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Aug 1997 18:30:38 -0400 From: Scott Hammer Subject: Re: Greatest hits / Hating limited ed's In a message dated 97-08-19 02:36:29 EDT, you write: << hello sommsters far and wide! i have no problem with the Greatest Hits things that have been going on, hell i think i wrote the most out of all of us so far, being the babbler of all that is SG that i am, but i think some of you guys have the wrong idea. *WE'RE* not making the Greatest Hits albums... what we're doing is speculating on what we'd love a greatest hits album released by A&M to be and to look like and what musically we'd like on it. we're not coming up with some huge devised plan that Seth is taking over and we're constructing on our own as a Somms project... not at all. we're just being silly and having fun with the idea of "what could we, the fans, possibly want out of a SG great hits collection?" so, relax and just roll with the flow. = ) we're just playing around, like when we all wrote out our setlists for what a SG Unplugged Session would have sounded like... = ) ATTN: This is to the guy who HATES HATES HATES limited edition stuff, and said that it would all be that way if I had my own way.... well, if i had my way, we wouldn't be speculating a SG greatest hits, we'd be wondering what the next Soundgarden album would have on it cause the band would still be together. i personally love vinyl and limited stuff, the fun of collecting is the thrill of finding that lost 7" that only 5000 were made of. it's the sheer ecstacy of opening up a package and seeing the Room a Thousand Years Wide/ HIV Baby grape vinyl staring back at you FINALLY!!!! = ) (wink wink at you know who!) Sg was such an incredibly multidimensional band, and imhfo, the greatest live act ever. = restricting this to album tracks only- *that* would be sacrilege.=20 so now the problem is- so many songs! what to do? who cares. make it 2 = or 3 CD, that doesn't matter.=20 limited availability? that just wouldn't be fair. this should be = available to anyone & everyone, forever. the best of is also a way for those Sg virgins out = there (remember my bob story?) to get a feel for every facet of the band (yet another = reason to include live tracks, etc.), so a "get 'em while they're hot" sorta thing'd be = defeating the whole purpose. =20 limited edition silver vinyl. now there's an idea i've been enamored w/ = for a long time. starlight silver's the color i associate most w/ Sg. as for the art work, everything should be fresh & original. if i had my = way, the cover'd be one of three. either: 1)shiny gray-black background.=20 Pain or Delight =09 Soundgarden centered in medium sized, silvery, flowery italic letters w/ black = leaves, stems & flowers (outlined in silver) interweaving.=20 2)same title, same lettering (hold the flowers) and for the background a = NW forest at twilight, trees touching skyline. sky could be overcast or clear, = doesn't matter. hazy & dreamlike.=20 *3)again, same lettering. background is a clear midnight sky w/ a view = of the big dipper & a shooting star. there'd be a CD book. the art work would be one of the above that = didn't make the cut. it'd have pics of the band in action, thoughts from each member on what = Sg meant to them, their favorite songs, anecdotes, best concert experiences, what = they loved & hated most. in the back there'd be lyrics, tabs for each song on the album. = the pages would be the grayish-black color or a kind of silvery grayish-white, w/ more = flowers & trees outlined in silver.=20 and now, the moment you've all been waiting for... the track list. =3D) = 28 songs (initially there were 36 :-o), so... i guess that means there'd = be 2 CDs. this was so hard. i decided against singles, b/c altho this is a tribute = album 1st & formost, for those ppl who are just discovering Sg, why include songs they've = already heard (in some cases time & time again)? and altho BUTOW, BiMH, Pretty Noose, FoBD = are some of Sg's greatest, they've had their day in the sun. songs like Fresh = Tendrils, Head Down- this album's their chance to escape from obscurity. they're listed in an order which i think suits them best, certain songs = grouped together to form a narrative, or a paradox, or b/c they're similar in theme... and = like niki said, it's important that the album flow.=20 these are some of my favorite songs, songs that represent all that Sg = has given me, everything i feel for them, and everything they mean to me. 1. Personally, I see it as a way for record companies, retailers, and "fellow collectors" to take advantage of the die hard fans for profit. They hype these items, teasing us with the promise of something rare and valuable, then few of us ever see these things when they come out unless we are somehow able to order and reserve them in adavance. They don't get to smaller cities and the people working in the record stores skim most of them off that do come in (some with the intention of selling them for more $ later). Prices are generally inflated even at the outset. And since most of us have to pick them up later, used, we get taken to the cleaners. The prices get upped even higher for a product that is rarely in mint condition (even when advertised as such) and where does that extra $$$ go? Not to the band. It goes right into the dealer's pocket. Hmmm...kinda sounds like the same mentality as bootlegging... Sure, it's a thrill to find one of these rarities, but often the thrill is tempered considerably by the sobering realization of having spent a lot of money you can't really afford to be spending for something that shouldn't have been so hard to get in the first place. (This killed off my collecting baseball cards). Music is a spiritual thing for many of us. It should be available to us all at a fair price, and so should the fun of fancy packaging or colored vinyl. (The fair way would be to keep these things in production as long as there was sufficient interest in them). And that feeling of "aha! I got something you didn't" is just plain childish elitism. Think about it-- would sex be more fun for you if you could only get it once every several years and it cost you a lot of money?
