Pul-eeeeze! Haven't many of us expressed how diverse our own tastes are? Sure, Ben likes punk. He also said he wishes punk would die. He listens to other "rock". He listens to jazz. He even admires some of the old country songwriters (like Johnny Cash). He likes the Beatles. Why did Ben join Soundgarden? Because he was a big Soundgarden fan! He loved their music and felt he understood what it was about. (It's all in the interviews, kiddies. Do your homework). I thought this over for a little while and I began to envision a 3 CD compilation..possibly a box set. I haven't really thought up a song list yet but, why 3 you ask? Well, I think two full length CD's offer enough time to fit in a pretty good number of SG's absolute best material - along with a third CD, filled with live performances. I have a feeling that A&M has a good number of live soundboard stuff, in THE magical vault perhaps? :) Maybe I'll elaborate on this whole thing sometime later. First, about Exit Stonehenge. I, personally, after much consideration have decided that it's Chris singing... just from teh way its sang... if you listen real close it sounds a little like him. The only time I can't listen to Soundgarden is when I'm trying to fall asleep, because I get too into the music and can't fall asleep. I made that mistake a little while ago- DotU kept me up all night. Oops. And I had another SG dream! (Yay!) I was in a CD store, and I was looking through the SG section (of course!) and I came across Fresh Deadly Rarities! Though it looked like the back of Ten... not to mention that it had all the songs on it I dont own.. So I bought it and took it home, listened to it, and put it on my self, and went to bed.. When I woke up (actually woke up, as in, I wasn't dreaming anymore..) I reached up to grab it and play it again- and it wasn't there!! I was so crushed! It really sucked! In other news: I've been puting BHS into my really really really old (we're talking like, Ultramega time here) computer music program (note by note =P ) and I played it for my friend over the phone... it reminded her of Mario Brothers, so she's drawing little Super Garden Brothers (anyone have a better name?!?) They're REALLY cute! I wanna get them scanned when she finishes Ben, so I can show you guys. Anyway, little Super Chris is holding a little lighter, which is his weapon, and Super Kim has a little Beer Bottle, it has two uses. He can drown things in beer, and when he's done, he can throw the bottle too! Super "skivvies" Matt (got the idea from THAT picture..) has his little drums sticks but we can't decided what to do with Ben! We were gonna make his spit, but he needs to hold somehting in his hand.. we're thinking the broken neck of his bass... or a fan >=) I dunno. Lastly, Im assuming that the Down on the Upside double Gatefold LP would be a good thing to pick up as soon as possible? I found it on sale for 15 + shipping and all that shit... at the Sub Pop Megamart... so I think i'll go grab that while it's still around.. =] How rare is this? And does anyone know if it's colored or not? Please? In a message dated 97-08-17 07:02:19 EDT, you write: << The second cd would be filled with b-sides and the "extra" songs. I know that some of you are not into having these on a greatest hits album, but I prefer not to look at it that way. Not all SG fans have access to all the extra songs, and this would be a final gift to the fans. I read somewhere (I can't remember the source) that Chris would like to have made available to the fans all the extra songs they were required to release. This would be a good way to accomplish that. By having the 2nd cd filled with extra songs, the retrospective album would appeal to both old and potential new fans, which I think would make A&M happy. I don't think that a limited edition release is the way to go, unless you want to include in the first certain number a special booklet or special artwork. I find the idea of a limited release elitist, and SG was NOT what I would call elitist. I say make the material available to everyone! >> Ok... #1. Plain and simple a "Greatest Hits" compilation is just that, greatest hits. B-sides are songs that are generally rare and hard to get a hold of...and never aired hence they are not greatest hits at all. I hate the word hits, but that's what this thread is about so I've gotta use it. #2. If you don't have these b-sides dupe em from somebody. I really don't think I like the idea of every new eMpTyV child going around listening to the special songs that I'm sure others as well as myself have run around frantically searching for. All the blood sweat and tears that went into finding them, along with that awesome feeling you get when you find em, would all be stripped by putting them on a standard release. I don't dig it. #3. The limited edition stuff is not elitist at all...sure I missed out on a lot of the stuff before LTL, but that just means I've had to work that much harder to find em...and that just makes the fruits of my labor that much more enjoyable. Believe me, I sympothize with the cash issue (i.e. not having it!), but that's why I say dupe it from someone. Send em a tape or two and some cash for the postage to send it back...I've done this many times and have no problems with it. I completely understand wanting these songs so bad you can taste it, but they were limited edition and to take that away would really suk. If they were included it would probably just be an A&M money scam anyway. Put some live trax on instead, that would kick much ass. ~^v^OzzY^v^~ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Aug 1997 13:26:31 -0400 From: Jenna Freemon Subject: I have a question for all you sommsters I was just wondering what that black stuff that Chris wraps around his wrists. I'm here via modem." Later in the dream Kim and Chris also transported over, along with a couch. I tried to talk them into re-uniting, but they all said they had other things they wanted to do. I wasn't going to respond to this, but the more I think about it the more I believe I should. Let me start by saying that I own SOMMS, most of the b-sides and most of the compilations. What I don't have, a very kind and gracious friend has taped for me. So I can listen to all of SG's "extra" songs anytime I want to. Does that make me a better or truer fan than someone who only has their major releases, or even just dubbed tapes of them? NO WAY!!! I've been into SG since LTL was released. Does that make me a more worthy fan than someone who got into them after they released DOTU? NO WAY!!! People get into bands for different reasons at different points in their lives. Just because they weren't fans from the beginning does not make them unworthy of having access to a band's complete body of work. I collect SG songs in their different formats because I'm a collector. It took me YEARS to find SOMMS. But that doesn't mean that I don't want someone else to have access to those songs. I'm sure that some of the Sommsters reading this right now were in elementary school when Sub-Pop 200 was released. That shouldn't disqualify them from owning Sub Pop Rock City. I think it's cool to have the original releases, and I'm proud of the ones I've been able to find. But I'm not selfish enough to tell someone else that just because they didn't have access to a song the first time around that they're just out of luck now. I would love to see an extra songs compilation released because I truly believe that it would be a wonderful gift to the fans, and by fans I'm including those fans that haven't discovered SG's awesome music yet. Such a compilation would not diminish, even in the least, the value I place on my own personal SG collection. If you disagree with me, that's OK. It's just my opinion. Life Rules! If I could influence management, I would make the following suggestions: 1. Don't arrange the songs in chronological order. It would be way cooler to hear the songs arranged by similarity of mood or sound. The very best arragement would be to have the band group the songs according to similarity of tempo or mood. This might lead to a semi-chronological grouping anyway, but would be way more interesting to listen to. Plus, it would give some insight into how the band thinks the songs fit together. 2. Include as many rare cuts as possible. I wouldn't call it a Greatest Hits compilation, either. I think it would be more marketable if you could offer fans a chance to pick up some rare but excellent music along with the known hits. Live recordings would also be nice to include, even if they are of mainstream hits. By the way, I thought that the idea behind the "From the Mouth of Decadence" b-side compilation was that we would all pay to buy them if they ever became widely available. 3. It would be cool to have segues between the songs- all of the suggestions that seth had sound good to me. Short interview quips, silly noises, etc. would make the compilation more worth buying. Plus, it shows that creativity went into the making of the compilation. I mean, anybody could slap the top-selling singles in chrono order and try to make fans shell out a few more bucks. I like to think that soundgarden is above that sort of thing. 4. The packaging should include pictures of stuff like a picure of the fork necklace, a bottle of Ben's favorite beer, handwritten liner notes from the band, original artwork: anything that would indicate band involvement in the project. Sterile record company graphics and rock critic liner notes are just plain boring. A girl can dream, can't she? Tiffany /\/\^^/\/\ Vampyre Cat ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Aug 1997 14:12:54 PDT From: power child Subject: greatest hits ideas I would like to see the following... 1) basic greatest hits package on tape and cd. songs could be chosen by: a) the band, but will probably be too esoteric for general consumption. but, do they care? b) the record company, which means the fans will hate it; c) the fans: by a poll on the unofficial and official web sites. make it a cd-plus, and include some videoclips. the lost snl sketch would be wonderful. no segues, makes it hard to tape. cool would be two versions, one generally available in stores, and one via mail order to fans off the web site, that would have stuff the other one didn't, that *the band* would think that only fans would care about. or, the band could select some fans to choose those items, if they didn't care about it that much themselves. this is fine; they may wish to move on. that's what would be commercial. :) what would be cool as fuck is this: four *different* limited-edition, mail-order-only greatest hits compilations, created by each band member individually, down to the cover art and liner notes. ideally these would be on vinyl, because you can do things with vinyl packaging that you absolutely cannot do with a tiny cd booklet. (and if you don't have a turntable, that's not an excuse, because they are CHEAP and it'd be worth it for you to buy one. besides which, everyone should have one.) let each of the guys select the songs, versions, outtakes, what have you. ben could just have 44 minutes of white noise. it would be the kind of 'you pays your money you takes your chances' thing. no guarantee that you would like or even want what the band would want to show you. but the idea is to have ben and matt and kim and chris' individual versions of what they remember soundgarden as being, what they would want fans to remember, what they would want chronicled. i say 'mail order on the web site' because i look at what prince is doing now: he's releasing a live album, but won't do it until he gets 150,000 prepaid pre-orders, which you can do on his web site or via an 800 number. smaller quantities but bigger profit margins. obviously a&m wouldn't want to do huge runs on these kind of things, but i am reasonably sure there are 5,000 sg fans out there who would pay, upfront, for a complete set of sg greatest hits albums compiled by the band members. if you let fan club members and mailing list members, say, have priority to order -- and only let people order ONE, and double-checked it against credit card numbers (so dealers couldn't have their friends each order one but use their credit card number), you would make reasonably sure it wouldn't be exploited, but then again, if you decided on the quantity based on the orders, that wouldn't happen. there would be enough for everybody. you *did* say go crazy. =) and i'm bored today. ~the power child ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Aug 1997 07:36:12 +1000 From: spoonman Subject: READ THIS =A0I am ordering anyone who doesn't have the Supermainstream boot to get it. On this version they play it a bit slower and the mix is great. On UMOK, they play it way too fast and the mix takes all it's power away. Soundgarden embarked on a journey through the hearts and souls of every music fan on the evenings of the 15th, 16th, and 17th at Roseland. Originally slated as a two night event, overwhelming popularity caused the band to expand their performance into a three night extravaganza enthusiastically. Unfortunately for the ticket-buying crowd, the evening began with the hideous discordance of two bands the world hopes it will never see again, Tender Loin and Rocket from the Crypt. It seems as if Soundgarden chose these opening bands purely as a means of contrast. In other words, the worse the opening acts sound, the better Soundgarden would be received. But, in terms of a band whose musical genius and greatness has been tested and verified so consistently over the years, I do not think it was really necessary to punish the crowds with this nonsense. Nevertheless, Soundgarden finally exploded on the stage with one of their more popular hits off Superunknown, "Spoon-man." Throughout the evening, the actively moshing crowd received a mix of selections, both old and new, mostly from their latter three albums. After over two hours of musical intensity, the band said their farewells and parted, while the beaten and exhausted crowd began to assess the evening's injuries and recover lost articles of clothing. One audience member was quoted saying, "this was one of the greatest concert experiences I've ever known." Indeed, they were three nights to remember. Thumbs up to Soundgarden, may you come this way more often in the future. Just thought I'd share this with you all :) Kick it! -Maria ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Aug 1997 11:46:58 +1000 From: justin nicholls Subject: I got you all in check... (NOTE: i > said, he *seems* out of place, not *is* out of place in soundgarden.) with all due respect accorded to both hiro and jason (not the same thing, mind you), ben was definitely the perfect man for the job, vasant. no question about it. musically, ben was ideal. hiro wrote some strong stuff, but once ben joined the band I believe soundgarden reached their creative potential. almost all his contributions to their music post-louder than love have been either successful or cool in a quirky sort of way. ben and matt combined is one of the best rhythm sections I've ever laid my ears on. and I distinctly remember matt saying that ben was a perfect addition in the live setting, since he could improvise and land on his feet. I don't think his background in punk music ever clashed with what soundgarden were doing musically. take a look at _screaming life_ and then _down on the upside_ and see which one sounds more punk - the one with him or the one without him. as for his attitude, I think that ben was just as neat a fit. individuality, creativity and belief in your convictions were hallmarks of soundgarden's history. ben had those in spades. maybe he just seems out of place to you because he was the "wild child". justin ps. that wasn't a flame. ----- in your real life, treat it like it's special in your real life, try to be more kind in your real life, think of those that love you in this real life, try to be less blind words by vernon reid ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Aug 1997 22:06:31 -0400 From: Jamesetta Simpson Subject: Re: Greatest hits a la niki (warning:LONG) > however, there is one issue i would like to take an opposite stand from you > on. the whole "limited first 5000 copies get a bonus" thing. i **really, > really, really, really, really hate** (thats a lot of loathing) when bands > put out limited edition anything. it makes it too hard to find and (when and > if you do find it) very very expensive. i cant afford bootlegs, let alone a Ah, but isn't if great to search for these limited items and for collectors the price is worth it. Look at the search for SOMMs - when you do find a copy you are so damn happy your heart beats like crazy. That is what collecting is all about. I love vinyl and I'm still searching for two vinyl's by Soundgarden. Someday I will find them, not only will I be happy for having them but it will be double because of the effort of the search... I really don't want the day to come when I go to a CD shop and don't run to the sections marked "S". However I have seemed to misplaced that list. So instead of rethinking the whole thing, and since many of you have good lists I will just make the few points that I need to. Many of the lists do not include Black Hole Sun. Yes I know many people may be tired of it, but ask the question: Would Superunknown gone chart topping if not for that song. Lets face it, that was the song that brought Soundgarden closer to the mainstream and farther out in the open than ever before. Would SG have been as successful without that song? I don't think so. That was their first huge hit, and that was the song that tugged them from the pool of anonymity and onto center stage. It has to be on there. Now, to end the album one song is worthy. Boot Camp should definitly be the last song. It was the final song on their final album. The one we will all remember them by. And the lyrics fit perfectly. Open the DOTUS book, and read the lyrics. Look at that whole page: One lone song flanked by a silohette photo of the group. That's the way I remember SG. That's the way it should end. RARITIES!!! covers, acoustics, speeches, antics, interviews, ........ . whatever it is, don't ever make it LIMITED EDITION. not all SG-lovers live in the states.
