What I immeditately thought of I ripped off from Nirvana's "From the Muddy Banks...". Since Chris is so *ahem* charming on stage (22" tv's in the ass ring a bell?) I would love to see an entire side of just on stage ramblings. Now I don't think this should be released with CD, rather on vinyl, like an extra side, just like Nirvana did. I know, its not original,I believe Pearl Jam did this on something, I'm not sure... but wouldn't it be great to have a whole side of their best on stage mumblings? some of them are just too funny. ~rita ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Aug 1997 02:36:19 -0400 From: Jenny Grover Subject: who are those guys? Jen Grover ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Aug 1997 09:07:29 +0100 From: Deborah Baker Subject: Greatest Hits Hmm,well for a start I wouldn't call it Greatest Hits. How about something like 'Soundgarden 1985-1997: The Ugly Truth' ? I think the limited edition craze is annoying more than anything else. There are going to be real fans who, for financial or other reasons, won't be able to get hold one of the first 1,000 pressed on glittery vinyl with free inflatable chris doll (Shroom, where are you?:-) I would bet that a lot of sommsters are still searching in vain for the holy grail that is the SOMMS disc. Nonetheless, there should be a vinyl version too because the booklet (yes there has to be one) would be so much more impressive that way. Full of pictures - and I agree Hiro should certainly be there. And rather than a potted history, why not comments from other bands/musicians about what Soundgarden meant to them? (And if we're going to do this Soundgarden-style maybe there should be one or two from people who think they suck :-) This approach would be far more interesting to us die hard fans and might catch the attention of record buyers who are only vaguely aware of Soundgarden. The alternative might be messages, comments, reminiscences from Kim, Chris, Ben, Matt and Hiro (as Niki suggested). Which leads to my next point...what to put on it! I'm having a hard time choosing b/c my favourites change all the time. I'm suppose A&M would sell the most copies if they put all the singles on, plus a couple of live tracks. And as obssessive fans, the songs we would choose would selfishly, and understandably, be to suit *our* tastes, not to shift units for A&M. So why not get the band members, past and present, to choose 2 or 3 tracks each? Or what about Susan's favourites? If that's a cop out, then my choice at 08.40 on Saturday 16th July would include (in no particular order) Slaves and Bulldozers (live) - to me this is the epitome of Soundgarden live. Superunknown Toy Box Like Suicide (one of Kim's favourite solos) Tighter and Tighter Burden in my Hand Incessant Mace (if there's a live version somewhere in the A&M vaults that could match the Real Wild Children boot...chills!> Hands All Over Ugly Truth Beyond the Wheel (live) Hunted Down Nothing to Say Rusty Cage Spoonman Thank You Falletin Me Be Mice Elf (from the Peel Sessions on BBC Radio 1) I should think I'm way past my 75 minutes, but if there were segues between some of the tracks how about Kim shouting 'LAME! ' or Chris saying 'Leave it Kim' from Sub Pop Rock City? Most of the stage banter is of course on boots, but if I ruled the world I'd include, "Everybody take off your shirt!" If there ever is one, and I'm not being greedy here, 1 cd probably wouldn't easily be able to cover the full range of SG. Heck, 2 might only just make it. JUST. (does anyone remember SG talking about the orange marmalade set? That set is most important). Not necessarily in this order, but similar to this: 1. Flower (good one to start with) 2. Nothing to Say 3. Little Joe 4. Heretic 5. Hands all Over 6. Gun 7. Fresh Deadly Roses 8. Loud Love 9. Rusty Cage 10. Oushined 11. Jesus Christ Pose (end first cd) 12. My Wave (start second cd) 13. Spoonman 14. Superunknown 15. Black Hole Sun 16. She Likes Surprises 17. The Day I Tried to Live 18. Blind Dogs 19. Karaoke 20. Pretty Noose 21. Ty Cobb 22. Tighter & Tighter (good one to finish with) Well, in my opinion it couldn't be any cooler than that. But who am I to decide... that set just seems to sum up SG perfectly. As far as the artwork goes, the wheel should play a part, or what about a distorted image of the Sound Sculpture in Seattle. Maybe a biography inside, with mention of us sommsters. Hi guys! Here's my opinion: I think the "retrospective" album MUST be a double cd. The first cd would be filled with a few singles but mostly songs that should have been more widely aired. I'm not going to list specifics; I'll leave that up to A&M and the Powers That Be. BTW, does A&M own the rights to release the Sub-Pop and SST material? It would be a shame not to include songs off Screaming Life and UMOK. This first cd would be to attract new fans (what's wrong with attracting new fans?) and it would be nostalgic for those of us who are already into them. The second cd would be filled with b-sides and the "extra" songs. I know that some of you are not into having these on a greatest hits album, but I prefer not to look at it that way. Not all SG fans have access to all the extra songs, and this would be a final gift to the fans. I read somewhere (I can't remember the source) that Chris would like to have made available to the fans all the extra songs they were required to release. This would be a good way to accomplish that. By having the 2nd cd filled with extra songs, the retrospective album would appeal to both old and potential new fans, which I think would make A&M happy. I don't think that a limited edition release is the way to go, unless you want to include in the first certain number a special booklet or special artwork. I find the idea of a limited release elitist, and SG was NOT what I would call elitist. I say make the material available to everyone! Life Rules! Personally, I'd go bananas. Unfortunately, I'd say my compilation would be extremely likely to be different from everybody else's, but here goes. You see, I have a vision! :> I can't restrict myself to one CD (seventy-five or whatever minutes). I reckon at least two CDs and preferably three CDs are what I need. (packaging costs?) Up to a half should be standard releases. Start right from the beginning - I'd personally put this collection into chronological order (1985-1996), to see how the band has developed over time. Do any recordings of early gigs exist, especially pre 1989? I'm thinking the odd live track should be put on there when a studio recording doesn't exist (but only when!), especially say for either covers of bands or songs that have only ever made bootlegs. Unfortunately, this makes the task of actually making a listing of the tracks I want on the CDs difficult, because I don't know what exists out there. As far as I'm concerned, the live recordings *MUST* be of good quality. Include some dialogue from interviews or gigs between tracks, but keep it short. The studio recordings to be included (by my reckoning) from major releases are as follows - but remember, if live recordings of the song are to be put on the compilation, the studio release shouldn't be there!! Also, I don't think there should be too many from the later albums, and that the list shouldn't necessarily only include singles - although, from A&M perspective, the singles would probably make it all the more marketable, and that's an important element to selling the beast: Screaming Life/FOPP --> * Hunted Down 2:43 * Little Joe 4:31 * Swallow My Pride 2:17 * FOPP 3:37 Ultramega OK --> * Flower 3:29 * All Your Lies 3:51 * Nazi Driver 3:57 Louder Than Love --> * Ugly Truth 5:26 * Hands all Over 6:00 * Full On Kevin's Mom 3:37 * Loud Love 4:57 Badmotorfinger * Rusty Cage 4:26 * Slaves & Bulldozers 6:56 * Jesus Christ Pose 5:51 Superunknown * Let Me Drown 3:52 * Fell On Black Days 4:42 * She Likes Surprises 3:17 Down On The Upside * Pretty Noose 4:12 * Never the Machine Forever 3:36 * Ty Cobb 3:05 By the way, in whatever form (live or studio), the release should finish with Ty Cobb. Note that this list was written very quickly - I'd probably change many of the selections with some thought. Now, in between these live recordings and major studio releases, there must be the rarities that haven't been taken from live recordings. I won't provide a list of these, because I don't have any Soundgarden stuff outside the major releases - hopefully YOU GUYS can write about those. But the whole reason I want these included is because I can't get my hands on these rarities, and I'm sure I'm not the only one!!! As for the aesthetics etc etc, I'd simply have black discs with the SG logo on it. If possible, put small versions of the albums covers on the appropriate CD (ie. the one containing songs from that particular era). People can have their rare versions, but personally, it's the music that's important. Have an early edition (20000-100000 released) if you insist with a third CD that has the rarities only on it. Not too fussed with vinyl either - people can have their particular choices again. I'd be really interested in hearing people's ideas - also, by the by, does anybody have any thoughts on how a mixed live/studio release works ie. does it annoy you or do you like it? Jackhammer. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Aug 1997 12:26:24 -0400 From: Dan Carbo Subject: Re: help a guy out >>anyway, i ahve noticed a weird SG reaction for me. i was playing my friend in pool (who is much better than me) and i popped in some SG. all of a sudden, i ran the table. also when i do my homework i noticed how i really can't concentrate til i turn on SG. has this happened to anyone else??? This is wrong, wrong, wrong, if done in the manner everyone is suggesting. I would still buy it, but with all the songs having been already released, it would make me a "collector." The only thing I want to "collect" is the music. So what could make this different? Memorabilia. Make it worth taking out instead of sitting in your CD tower while the other albums are in your player. What's important: 1. Videos. When was Motorvision released? We need a collection of all unedited music videos. It hasn't been done, and it HAS to be done. Whether it's CD+ or VHS, I dunno. 2. Alternative song versions. Especially live. Like Chris' BHS, etc. 3. Interviews. Normally, I wouldn't care for this, but short, funny clips, whatever. 4. Pictures. Lots of 'em. Maybe posters, too. Yeah, posters. 5. Shirts. Waitaminute... Hell, this wouldn't be a record, if I had it my way; it'd be like that DOTU backpack, or a marketing blitz, or somthing of the sort. Unlimited, though. A greatest hit, as I can best define, is a record that has earned substantial respect from the mainstream, or to be more precise, funded the next record. From A&M's point of view, a greatest hit is not something that a hardened Soundgarden listener would recommend, for they own most if not all of their records anyway. Pure and simple, a compilation of this kind is nothing more than a final "cash in" on the unfortunate demise of a band that has floated often into the commercial eye. However, for those who don't believe this, that maybe a greatest hits compilation is a final encore to the band's successful career (a fair point, though not mine), maybe we should be looking more towards the songs that brought us to Soundgarden, and not the ones we've grown to love. If we only consider the more diverse tracks, there won't be that many copies sold. Generally, the standard layout for any greatest hits is a listing (sometimes chronological) of all singles released commercially (not promotionally), and for Soundgarden, should be as follows: 1987 (Screaming Life) 1. Nothing to Say 1989 (Ultramega OK) 2. Flower 1989 (Louder than Love) 3. Hands All Over 4. Loud Love 1991 (Badmotfinger) 5. Jesus Christ Pose 6. Rusty Cage 7. Outshined 1994 (Superunknown) 8. Spoonman 9. Day I Tried To Live 10. Black Hole Sun 11. Fell On Black Days 1996 (Down On The Upside) 12. Pretty Noose 13. Burden In My Hand 14. Blow Up The Outside World I'm sure there are other releases, perhaps in Australia and Europe, but those above are without a doubt the most globally known. Furthermore, a second CD would be interesting, perhaps containing the more diverse tracks (b'sides, covers, live material, etc.), and would suit the more die-hard Soundgarden fanatic. However, this is completely in the hands of A&M, and in my opinion, very much unlikely. NO. so, i guess what im saying is+++++ give us some soundboard live stuff, shit that'll sound so good, evan the people who are annoyed by live recordings will like it. 4. last and most importantly---THE LAST SONG ON THE WHOLE THING MUST BE BOOT CAMP. this song toped of dotus like vanilla ice cream on apple pie. and according to track order, would probably do a good job toping on the greatest hits. mike. So I started to think about this and thought if it could say "Soundgarden" or "Metallica". So I tried.. I had to put "sound" and "garden" separately because "Soundgarden" is not a dictionary word. "Metallica" couldn't be done because it won't say "a".. it had "metallic" but no "a" so that was a problem when I tried to make sentences. I got it to do: -Chris Cornell (there is no "Chris" but there is a "Kris" which is pronounced "crease" and so "Chris" sounded foreign and "Cornell" sounded normal, but it was convincing enough to sound like "Chris Cornell") -Matthew Cameron (it couldn't say "Matt" because it was short for "Matthew" so..) -Ben Shepherd (this one went well) -Kirk Hammett (same as above) -Oz Fest (it can't say "Ozzy") -Black Sabbath -Nirvana -Andrew Wood (R.I.P.) -Chris equals babe (well... It can't say "Chris is a babe".. instead it would be able to say "Chris is babe" and that would be inappropriate) -Matthew Cameron is stellar (hehe) -Hiro Yamamoto (actually it was "Hiroshima Yamamoto", but I tried..) -Jason Newsted ("Newsted" became "new" and "stead") -Thayil (it can't say "Kim" because it's short for "Kimberly" and I didn't think it was good for it to say "Kimberly Thayil" so I just made it say "Thayil" the best it could; "Thigh" and "ill".. close enough.) -MTV sucks (actually they don't do plurals so it was "MTV suck") -Lollapalooza is cool (hehe) -Soundgarden kicks ass (again.. it can't say plurals so it was "Soundgarden kick ass") -Mother Love Bone I can't remember if I did any others, but some words couldn't be completely done like: - (James) Hetfield (it can say James, but not "Hetfield".. there is no word as "het" but it could say "Hitfield" or "Hatfield", but it's not the same) - Lars Ulrich (with this one "Lars" and "Ulrich" are apart of names like "Lars Onsager" and "Ulrich von Hutten",etc..) - Foo (Fighters) -Hater (it just wouldn't say "Hater" because it comes from "hate" and it won't say "er") Then... I got this idea for it to sing.... you can imagine this one, but I'll tell you anyway. I did sing for me the best it could: -I know what to do, I'm gonna fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck you, fuck you (BDS of course.. that fun to do because I got to set the preferences on pronouncing the word 3 times and so it said fuck three times in a row, but other than that I WON'T make sexually sentences concerning me and any of the band members using words such as fuck, if you know what I mean.. I promise! Well... hmmm...) -i've givin' everything I need, I'd give you everything I own, I'd give in if it could at least be ours alone, I've given everything I could, To blow it to hell and gone, Burrow down in and, Blow up the outside world.. -the first verse of Ty Cobb -"Jesus Chris Pose" -"Black hole sun, won't you come, and wash away the rain" well, I could do more, but I will later... Before anyone accuses me of taking the cop-out route here, let me say that I put considerable thought, listening time, and decision making into this, and I tried to use my head more than my heart in my approach. We all have our personal favorites. We all have our missionary tendencies (this is what people *should* be listening to). But having had some experience in the industry, and as a record buyer, I know that if something is billed as a "best of" or "greatest hits" that is what the buyer expects to get-- the hits. Therefore, they should all be included. That does not mean limiting the album to only that material, but the other material should be chosen carefully to reflect facets of the band perhaps not covered by the "hits", and yes, a couple of rarities should be thrown in as teasers. I definitely think this would need to be a 2 disc set. It would be nice to have it out on vinyl as well, but bear in mind that 2 full cd discs = 3 or 4 lps easily. This might not be practical. I do think the songs should be arranged chronologically. I will list here the songs I would choose (there may be too many. I didn't calculate times, just took a mental average of how many songs are on other 2 disc sets I have) along with reasons why I would choose some of them. Not necessarily in order: 1.Heretic (Deep Six version)(this song, for me, represents the birth of the band, and holds clues to the attitude and direction they would take) 2.Hunted Down 3.All Your Lies (either version. each has its own charms. I tend to lean to the Deep Six version.) 4.Flower 5.Beyond the Wheel 6.Mood For Trouble 7.Loud Love 8.I Awake 9.Ugly Truth 10.Gun (the live '90 version released as a b-side of BUTOW. this song builds more and kicks harder live, and it's also a way to break the monotony of regular studio versions) 11.HIV Baby (a rarity, highly collectible, and an important song. not only is this the first recording with Ben, it presages the direction BMF would take. there is a wonderful heavy but loose feel to this song, a sense of entropic tension typical of their live performances, plus Kim and Ben both really shine on this one.) 12.Birth Ritual 13.Rusty Cage 14.Outshined 15.Jesus Christ Pose (a must. a true masterwork.) 16.Mind Riot 17.Face Pollution (short, hard-driving, complex timing, masterful playing) 18.Searching With My Good Eye Closed 19.Blind Dogs (another rarity, and one that should be heard. a beautiful, emotionally deep, and musically artful song.) 20.My Wave 21.Fell On Black Days (video version) (besides being my personal favorite version and another way of breaking the studio version monotony, it illustrates well the way the band worked together in a way that is live, but not concert performance type live) 22.Head Down 23.Black Hole Sun 24.Spoonman 25.The Day I Tried To Live 26.Fourth of July 27.Fresh Tendrils 28.Mailman 29.Pretty Noose 30.Zero Chance (a beautiful, emotionally true, and artfully written song) 31.Blow Up the Outside World 32.Burden In My Hand 33.Overfloater 34.An Unkind 35.Boot Camp (yes, I think this is a good one to end with. calming, but still somewhat disturbing, a cooldown that still makes you think, and leaves you thinking) I think that a humorous interview excerpt should be included as a "hidden" track. As for packaging, I think the cover should be some varient of the FOBD forest and moon picture. I think this picture, in addition to being beautiful and attention-getting, sums up the mood of the band. For the discs themselves, I really like the idea of the SG logo. One disc could have a white logo on black, the other disc a black logo on white. I would like to see a nice booklet (not some big foldout thing, those are kind of a pain, but an actual booklet) with the history of the band written by someone close to the band (Susan? Henry?) and with pictures of the band, preferably ones we haven't already seen. I would like to see a simultaneous release of a video compilation (this is WAY overdue) with the same cover and title as the album, with all the videos, including alternate versions, the unedited Pretty Noose, and (please, God, this would be a dream come true) Night Surf. Well, there's my 2 cents worth, if anyone is still awake by the end of this. Jen Grover ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Aug 1997 23:22:27 -0600 From: "Jason S.
