I'm sure this is an unwanted thread, but this is from Chris on Triple R radio whilst SG were here in Australia ('97). It sprung into mind b/c I transcribed it and that tends to make *every* word and nuance in the interview stick in your head :) I think Chris and Kim are masters of subtlety. Kim's line about lemonade stands - in Hype! - is brilliant :) K is the interviewer, C is Chris. K: Yeah, that's interesting how all those boundaries seem to have dissolved, really in the last few years so much. I mean I remember when alternative music was really starting the cross over in the late 80's. C: Mmm-humm. K: Those sort of boundaries almost ceased to be relevant, didn't they? C: Yeah, mainly because that usually it's not the bands that start what can be classified as a genre, it's the bands that are influenced by it or try to copy it that end up being in that genre. Like for instance - grunge. I don't, I never think of Nirvana or Pearl Jam or Soundgarden or Mudhoney or The Melvins as grunge bands. I think of these as individual bands. To me a grunge band is Stone Temple Pilots (STP) or Silverchair or arghh... Bush. Bands that are obviously influenced by a combination of all these bands together, which suddenly creates a genre. It sounds like if you took little pieces out of all these Seattle bands, and put them together you'd have STP, and that, that's grunge to me. That's like this genre they created by borrowing. If you listen to it straight, it's great, but if you get really stoned, it can seem that the whole thing was conceived for that state of mind. I can't explain why." They were playing in what resembled the Punchline (a comedy club in San Francisco). I think I had took the place of Kim because I was onstage with Chris and Ben. I didn't see Matt but I saw my friend who's a drummer freaking on the drums. Ben was fooling around with his bass, playing it in an unorthodox manner. This seemed to have a deeply troubling effect on Chris. He gave Ben a few dirty looks as if to say, "stop dickin' around you fourdollar crackwhore," but Ben was having fun and paid no attention. So Chris reached over grabbed his bass and began to play it along with his guitar. It was a distrubing, yet strangely entertaining dream. -Jimi ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Aug 1997 15:11:46 -0400 From: Robbie Strickland Subject: Re: Living in a SG unfriendly town > I decided to try and find some SG merchandise today. I want to respond to this current thread of people complaining about the lack of SG fans where they live. I live in a small Southern town, and if I ever come across ANYONE that even likes SG I'll probably give them a huge hug whether they're a stranger of not. I do not know anyone else in the flesh who even enjoys their music except my husband. (He's a good sport. :) HOWEVER, I know about 500 people on this List that love SG. Some (not all) of the most interesting conversations that I have are with you guys, the other subscibers. My radio station (I only have 1 to choose from) doesn't play the greatest music either. That's why I listen to cd's ALOT. My collection of music is more interesting than what the DJ would play anyway. I guess what I'm trying to say is for those people that are bummed about not knowing any other SG fans, be happy that you've got Somms. I am!! Most of us are in the same situation you're in. I think it was on Launch that Chris said something about it taking a certain amount of taste to enjoy their music for more than 30 seconds. Not that I'm a snob (well, maybe about SG I am), but I really don't want to be into something that most everyone else is into. I wish that SG could have sold 50 million copies of each record just to line their wallets, but they knew they would only appeal to a certain number of fans. If it was cool with them, then it's cool with me. Be glad you're one of the select few!! Life Rules! I went in to harrass a friend of mine who works there curently doing the Wedesday Drivetime slot. So I played Into the Void a couple of weeks ago when I was in there I played the live version of Salves and Bulldozers but the pity is I never actually get to here the song properly since there are always songs being cued to interupt it, I also went and found the Hater Cd in there and played a song off that and found that the cd had barely been played at all the sleeve was in perfect condition, probably due to the note on the case that "Much fuss was had by all sounds nothing like Soundgarden" refering to the featuring members of Soundgarden sticker. Well fellow Brisbanites you can ring them up and ask for requests off it and know that they will get played the only failing would be if the announcer is slack.
