Anytime of day or night, any time of year, anywhere. "I haven't added them up, but I'd say that I have more black days than not..." chris cornell, speaking with tom lanham (cmj, july 96). after a long, life-imposed hiatus, the soundgarden song of the week continues. this one has actually been sitting around in the computer for at least a month, so perhaps it is time to stop ruminating and post it. anyhow, I thought I might indulge myself and return with 'fell on black days', the third single taken from _superunknown_. why is this indulgent? good question. being a single, 'fell on black days' comes complete with a video clip, which might make for a little more content/material, and will certainly make for more blabber from me. it also enables me to make a contrast, 'fell on black days' versus the demo version of same, taken from many of the fobd single releases. I can hear the virtual groans from here, so I'll try my best to keep it short. as always, go and put the song on now (if your housemates or workmates don't mind). it will make the review that much more readable. I won't outline all the details for this one, since I ran through the particulars of _superunknown_ last time around (can you remember that far back?). but for the sake of the uninitiated I will note that 'fell on black days' was written solely by chris cornell, that the song runs for somewhere in the realm of four minutes and thirty-nine seconds, and that from the moment I first heard it, 'fell on black days' marked for me the sharp shift in soundgarden's tone from blood-curdling screams and kamikazi guitars to stark brush-strokes and understated brilliance. the song was released as a single in a number of formats, and a number of other alternate versions were released as b-sides, versions I'll talk about briefly a couple of pages down. begin review. while honesty had always been a trademark of soundgarden's music, I feel that the release of _superunknown_ saw the band reach a level of song-writing where they could move away from the simple duality of aggression and depression and relate a wider range of emotions; to actually allow the listener to empathise on a deeper level than just their earth-shaking sonic rumble. you are probably wondering how I can disregard songs like 'hands all over' or 'slaves and bulldozers', songs that preceded _superunknown_ by at least two years, songs that undoubtably have a deeper context than something akin to 'big bottom'. but I think kim got it right when asked about the songs taken from _superunknown_, observing that "we aren't throwing our head at you so much now as we are our heart". in particular, I think chris' confidence in his own song-writing grew immensely after the delayed success of the temple of the dog record; that he could write songs that weren't quite in the mold of 'outshined' or 'beyond the wheel' but still know that they were quintessentially *soundgarden* (I'm sure that there were other factors, but for the sake of clarity I'll leave them out). the listener may never have envisaged the form _superunknown_ would take, but the songs loving crafted and later contained on the album's seventy minute breadth were what lay at the heart of soundgarden, what I believe to be the very essence of soundgarden. despite the near perfection of _badmotorfinger_, I would have to say that _superunknown_ is my favourite, if only on the strength, diversity and vitality of the songs that made the final cut. anyhow, back to the concept of honesty. I find 'fell on black days' to be a remarkably honest and sincere song, in terms of both music and lyrics. sure, the lyrics are blatantly sincere, but the level of honesty in the band's performance of the song really strikes me as something tremendous. it is hard to put into words for you to digest, and I'm not sure that you would even agree or understand if I could, but the feeling is real to me nonetheless (perhaps here more than on any other soundgarden song). 'fell on black days' is just an incredibly smooth and natural composition, never contrived or forced. pure goodness. matt and chris introduce the song, matt's steady hi-hat drifting from the left channel, balanced by chris' measured strumming from the right. then kim climbs into the mix, letting loose with perhaps the most despairing note to ever grace a soundgarden record. from just the opening four bars you get a sense of not only the terrible bleakness of the song, but the total honesty and simple warmth of what is to come despite that very desolation. 'fell on black days' is a fairly uncomplicated song in terms of structure, following a progression of verse one, half chorus, verse two, chorus, bridge, verse three, extended chorus, end. but despite this marked simplicity, I find it very difficult to dismantle. to me, 'fell on black days' is so pure in terms of song context and totality that I really would prefer to avoid my usual atomistic approach. much like the band itself, 'fell on black days' is much, much more than the sum of its parts. so this week I'm only going to gloss over the details, although I will point out the cool stuff when I see it. I just don't want to pull out my scalpel and dissect. I think it would be remiss of me to tear it down like that. on that note, let us immerse ;) the guitar sound is exceedingly bright, somewhat offset by the bleakness of chris' lyrics. like most of soundgarden's post-bmf material, both kim and chris play guitar, although chris is a little more subdued in his performance (I've listened closely to the mix, and I think it is a case of performance rather than brendan o'brien's tweeking of knobs). he does, however, get more involved in the mix at 3.12 and during the final chorus. I will also note here that chris' vocal performance is awesome, perhaps not as good as other tracks on the record, but routinely astonishing all the same. golden pipes? you betcha. moving back to stringed instruments, kim's guitar sounds somehow "wider", like his strumming action is less tight than chris'. like most other soundgarden songs, kim's parts are all panned hard to the left, chris to the right; although it is a little surprising that kim's solo isn't centered (as it is on other _superunknown_ tracks). his lead break from 3.12 to 3.40 is cool, it's desperation a kind of contrast to the determined swing of the main riff. just what you would expect from kim, I guess. something out of left field that manages to fit right into the glove. which brings me to something interesting - apart from the main verse riff, there are scant other guitar sections or melodies. the central melody only changes appreciably twice, during the instrumental bridge and during the bridge from verse to chorus. other than that, chris and kim play basically the same part over and over with barely any variation, which is kinda weird. in keeping with the relatively sparse tone of the song, there are only two or three main guitar tracks, with the obligatory (though modest) colour parts thrown in by kim from time to time. in all, great work by both guitarists. so while the bulk of emotion flows through kim's mesa cabinets and chris' windpipes, what of the rhythm section? ben and matt's performances are, like most times, brilliant, and lend their own significant weight and heartache to the song's final mix. ben's contribution to the song's architecture itself is more than significant; I've read comments from both matt and chris (from memory), both noting that ben added the final bass progression, a bass-line that fit the vocal melody and totally opened the song up (matt's words, not mine). for the most part, what ben is playing sounds entirely independent of the main riff, particularly during the first chorus and final refrain. if you can focus on what he is playing, the song takes on a different tone altogether; the part where ben's bass pulses beneath the bridge is awesome, totally musical. matt is, again, right on time. every beat shows perfect control, each space perfect restraint. I find that with 'fell on black days', matt's beats are more about the tune itself and about being musical than just keeping time. in fact, the time-keeping aspect of it seems to be kind of incidental. his beats flow with the music, rather than drive it. so while you can't attribute the basic melody of the song to matt, the surges and pauses, the real dynamics of the song, are his. now for the lyrics - whatsoever I've feared has come to life whatsoever I've fought off became my life just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile sunspots have faded and now I'm doing time 'cause I fell on black days whomsoever I've cured I've sickened now whomsoever I've cradled I've put you down I'm a searchlight soul they say but I can't see it in the night I'm only faking when I get it right 'cause I fell on black days how would I know that this would be my fate so what you wanted to see good has made you blind and what you wanted to be your's has made it mine so don't you lock up something that you wanted to see fly hands are for shaking, not tying I sure don't mind a change but I fell on black days how would I know that this would be my fate. lyrically, I find 'fell on black days' outstanding. not because I enjoy wallowing in the mud with chris, but because his words relate exactly the depth of his emotion using a minimum of verbiage; probably the best measure of any song-writer or poet (if that was any measure of posting to somms, I'd be out on my ass). while many of his lyrical excursions are awe-inspiring, none are in my estimation as effective or as efficient as those featured on 'fell on black days'. lines like "so what you wanted to see good, has made you blind" don't call for crushing riffs, nor do they call for brain-bending vocals. the words don't need to be dressed up; you can focus entirely on the words chris is singing (as opposed to the delivery of those words) and understand his plight. when coupled with his emotional rendition, the connection is simple, almost primal. I guess that's why I like them so much. it would be a song even if they had left all their guitars and drums at home. anyway, I'm sure I don't have to relate to you what 'fell on black days' is about, even though I'm fairly certain that chris has never revealed the exact situation or circumstance the song refers to. the meaning is, of course, more than obvious; there is little reason or necessity to know of whom or what he sings. you only need to hear the words once to know the pain and sorrow. even the title (unlike the titles of other soundgarden compositions) is basically a neon billboard, so I'm guessing that you know just as well as I do. and in the end it doesn't really matter what chris or I think the song is about, it is more about what *you* hear when the words are sung. in this case I really believe that perception and interpretation is ten times more valuable than definition, so I'll leave my own feelings left unsaid. although, I will say that if you have ever fallen on your own black days, if you have ever had that proverbial blanket of security snatched away from your grasp, chris knows *exactly* how you feel. okay, now for a quick look at the other odds and ends. 'fell on black days' was also released as a "demo version" on two or three different single releases. I raise an eyebrow at the label "demo version"; I've always considered this take one of the few soundgarden x-files. I mean, how can a song that sounds like this, with these lyrics, *possibly* morph into the album version? they sound so dissimilar that I'm sure there was more than two or three steps between this and the superunk version. and I don't think that ben and kim's own additions to the song's final shape really account for the massive difference between the demo and end versions. it sounds more like an alternate (and, yes, very early) version of the end result. but I could, of course, be wrong. as with the rest of the tune, the lyrics to 'fell on black days (demo)' are considerably different to the lyrics on the album, although the chorus is similar. not as drifting or intense, more like some sort of dirge; I would say that the sound is actually pretty close to the vibe on their cover of 'into the void'. the mix is not particularly clear, so I have little idea of who is playing what and when in terms of guitar. everything seems straight down the line; guitars, bass and drums all moving in the same plodding progression - verse, verse, chorus, verse, verse, chorus. matt tries to add some swing, but it doesn't quite take (at least in comparison to the final rendition). chris' vocals are covered by a tonne of reverb, which sounds kind of cool, but at the same time overdone and a little unnecessary. overall I feel the demo lacks the shine of the album version (obvious, no?), and while it is rougher it fails to hold the emotion of the final take, which I think is more of an indictment than anything. the video performance of fobd is a good one. much more subdued, giving the audience a slightly different perspective on the song. musically all four guys get passing grades, staying close enough to the original while throwing enough of a change-up to make it interesting (something that I feel was difficult to pull off live in most cases). I've always liked the way they almost stumble into the final chorus. I would think that the visual aspect of the clip is interesting to most fans, as it is the one clip where we get a good look at the band interacting musically while they aren't jumping around (see 'rusty cage' and 'my wave' for examples of this). it's kind of intimate. shot entirely in black and white, the whole video turns out rather grey, which is cool, since all their previous clips were colourful affairs (see the rotating stage lights featured in 'loud love'). sadly, chris still hogs the camera, but there are good shots of matt, kim and ben looking alternately scary and intense. the way it slides in and out of focus is also kind of cool in a weird, fuzzy way. and for the trivia buffs amongst us, both kim and chris are in '90' shirts. so, in review, we have the demo version, the video version (which was included on the _songs from the superunknown_ ep), the alternate mix version (which I haven't heard, but probably isn't very different) and the live version included on a number of 'fell on...' singles. the live version isn't anything to write home about, which is kind of sad. I actually heard the song for the first time here in brisbane, live at the roxy about three weeks before the record hit my turntable. that was one of many highlights of the show, a song that grabbed my attention as effortlessly, if not more so, as older and more familiar tunes like 'jcp'. it would have been nice if they could have found a similar performance for the b-side. but in retrospect, I'm not sure that it was ever a song that translated well to the stage anyway. on record, however, it shone like a searchlight. a seamless composition that is perhaps as fluid as any soundgarden ever put to tape. well, that's it. if it seemed half-assed, disjointed, boring or all of the above it is because I'm already tired of it. expect the next couple to be markedly better, since I'd like to keep to some sort of standard here. I haven't done anything from _ultramega_ or _screaming life_ yet, so I'll see what happens tonight. maybe I'll have a moment of clarity or something... comments welcome. end review. justin ---- what's in the way we've been that's left my love paper thin was it there to begin with? words by stone gossard ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Aug 1997 18:23:03 +1000 From: Cronky Subject: Christi G'day sommsters Does anyone know what release/s "Christi" is on, and is it a cool song? It was about the scene that the band performed in in Singles, during the audience shot. Well, it was said that one of the people dancing looked like Matt and if people could check it out or something. Well, I did yesterday and I wasn't sure yet I am not denying the fact that it could be Matt. It looks like him, but I'm not sure. And I want to add that some of the guys surrounding "Matt" look like other Seattle singers.. Someone looks like Eddie Vedder, a guy that dances in the corner of your screen for awhile then disappears and someone has hair like Chris. I was thinking that since they might have used other band members that Chris would be there too or maybe it could be Matt Dillon or just another guy.. probably just another guy though, but the guy I saw that looked like Eddie really really really did look like him. It was kinda like a clear face of him, but he doesn't stay in sight so long. I put it in a freeze frame thing and went through each frame checking the shot of Matt's hair at his drum set and the guy in the audience's hair to see if they were the same.. I dunno.. Also, the post said that in the scene where Chris walks out of the apartment of Dillon's, it looks like Chris is wearing a fanny pack like Kim wears.. so of course I checked that out and I wasn't sure. It looked like it kinda, but it didn't fit in together because of the buckle. So I freezed that and went through that scene frame by frame and it apparently looked like a normal belt to me.. I replayed that scene a ton of times and it looked like a belt... But see, I understand how you could've thought that he wore a fanny pack. Chris, in that scene, wore his shirt tucked in with it hanging out a little and then he had the belt on.. so the shadow of the shirt was reflected on his package.. that's all I can make of it. I can't find that post, but I do remember reading it. 'cause we all know they suck. now i have to congratulate sg 4 not wasting out time w/ a bunch or 2 corded songs about "glycerine" u all know what i'm talking about. they're sincere & truly talented unlike some, who r offered record deals on a silver platter. now their rich. if they can do it i can do it. hey sommsters lets start a band. whos with me on this. maybe INTERSCOPE will sign us. & SETH, i want to kiss your mom & pop 4 having you, 'cause if they didn't i wouldn't be sitting here venting my thoughts to a bunch of people who probably don't care. -CATS4KIM ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Aug 1997 01:35:11 -0400 From: Jamesetta Simpson Subject: You know you are lucky - when!!! 1. The local radio station loves bands like Matchbox 20 and Sublime, and other stuff like that. They're just bands that get snatched up by the record labels, make a record, have a single, last for 3 months, and then are never heard from again. Unlike Soundgarden who worked the whole way to get recognized by producing album after album of great music that we all love. I know I would rather listen to old SG, Metallica, AIC, etc. before I would even consider sitting through the crap the radio plays.
