It's the top half of him and he's topless and playing a red guitar, and he's got a bone carving around his neck, and i know it's not from any nz shows, but it could be from an Australian show. hmmm. well theres lots of little ones around, counting that one from guitar world with chris, kim and ben and their guitars, and all the pictures from the last 7 months of my Soundgarden 1997 calender, but i must say that the august one is the best, because it's really cool. it's of Chris at a concert, and he has long hair, and that really cool white 90 top, and long black shorts, and red boots, and a black guitar, with heaps of speakers in the background, and i'd even go so far to say that he's doing the rusty cage stomp, because he's in mid-air. and i really like it. while i'm on the subject of posters, i know that there's someone apart from me and dave who went to SG wellington 97, and i can't seem to remember what ben was wearing. or the big day out. any way i have this poster and they are all wearing what they wore at the show, and i think this was taken after it, as Kim and Chris have really messy hair. was ben wearing a brown/grey shirt? from graham:) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Aug 1997 07:37:35 -0400 From: Maria Joseph Subject: Re: Touch Me, I'm Rich??? Any sommsters in that area who are soccer fans?? Then go see yourDC United play! I did--what a blast to see the pros I've been watching on TV! Anyway, like Toni and Jamie and a few other of us "more mature" sommsters, I wanted to add my 2 cents to the "how long will it last" talk. I've loved music since the summer I started playing the radio when I was doing chores, and I'm not even sure how old I was. I've gone thru alot of phases, and "outgrown" them but I usually keep the music around and dig it out once in a while....and the really shocking thing is when you pull out something you haven't heard in 10+ years AND YOU REMEMBER ALL THE WORDS!!! It's freaky! Soem of the others who have posted on this subject have said how their tastes change--they do. To the original asker of this question--was it Vasant--your tastes will change, you'll add new music to your collection. At least I sure hope you will! It would be sadder than sad if you stayed stuck solely on Sgarden. I was once pretty much stuck on one performers music and one band....Not until I discovered a cool radio station out of Cleveland and foud alternative did I realize just how narrow my sights had been. Don't be afraid to discover new sounds that you like--you won't be considered any less of a Sgarden fan or a traitor or anything. It's natural to expand your horizons; you have to or you'll become stagnant and not grow. I also liked the comment someone made about you'd bwe surprised what the people who pick up thier kids at school, etc., listen to. I'm a high school librarian. Does that conjure a picture of books, book paste and my hair in a bun? Wrong! My work has me up to my ears in computers, spending hours on the Internet, helping techs upgrade computers...and when I get to know kids well enough to talk music, they always think it's super-cool I'm into music...not JUST Sgarden, but all kinds of music! Something we all need to keep in mind--music is the universal language. I've been in Europe twice in just over a year's time, and both times I had the pleasure of having foreign bus drivers (I go w/ groups over there) who loved music and who agreed to play some of my music on their bus systems...and both times they liked what I gave them so it became a gift to them. Both times, just for the record, the music was Inflatable Soule's, yes that band w/ the 3 Cornell sibs in it. But these drivers also gave me music to explore, so even tho we couldn't communicate real well w/ words, the music became a bond and we became friends. How long will it last? As long as you want it to! Just remember to grow and experience new things too! thanks for the ears! debs ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Aug 1997 10:45:13 -0400 From: Laura Koeth Subject: Trash Talking....? I was in the rolling stone section of aol when I stumbled across random notes and the topic was bands that wrote songs about hating another band... anyways, this one thrash band Anal Cunt was highlighted for doing this, and they named some of their titles for their songs for the next album...One of their songs was "Anyone Who Likes Soundgarden Is A Faggot." This made me wonder if I was just being stupid, or if these guys were for real..? And then I wondered why they would think that... oh well... just something that caught my eye. -Laura ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Aug 1997 12:46:36 -0400 From: Dan Carbo Subject: No Subject First, I wanna start by saying I'm sorry if I bring up old topics. I've only been a part of this for a week, so many things have been discussed that I don't know about. Second, I would like to comment on my room decorations. I don't have many posters. A couple, but from what I have read many people have them. I have some nice color pictures of SG playing on Saturday Night Live (Those are located on my closet door.) But what I'm proud of is a giant SG symbol painted for me by a friend (You know, the one at all the internet sights, and the one on the Ultramega OK CD) It is the size of my door and hangs beautifully there. It was painted on a big white sheet, and I have decorated it with small pictures of each band member, kinda like a mural to SG. Last thing I wanna say is that I was at work yesterday, I work at a gas station (money for college) Well I was playing SG on my boombox, and this girl walks in, and asks me what I'm listening to. I tell her and she starts saying how much she hates SG, and she is talking to me politly, like I shouldn't be getting mad. No other customers were in the store, so as soon as she finished I flipped out at her. I didn't yell or anything, but I was ticked. What she said made no sence, and I even doubt she ever heard SG song. It just really pissed me off how some person can critisize the band I love, yet have no knowledge of them. Has anyone ever had a similar experience. "And nothing's gonna put me out." Dan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Aug 1997 09:05:29 -0700 From: Bonnie Subject: Re: How Long Will It Last?... HELL YES! > Right now, I'm 18. And I was just > thinking...will I like SG even when I'm old? Of course, no one can say what you will be liking when you're "old" (define old :) but I'll speak for myself here. I believe with all my heart that I will continue to love SG until the day I die, and that they will always remain my favorite. I'm able to say this because I've had my faves over the years, and maybe three in particular that surpassed all others until SG came along. The feelings, and more importantly, the *intensity* of the feelings that SG gives to me and makes me feel are on such a different level than anything I've experienced before, I know that it is more likely to be a unique bond. For me, that's something that just doesn't fade away. I still love my other faves, but SG took hold of something within me. I don't see it ever moving from or letting go of that place, nor do I want it to. As others have said, it doesn't mean I will only be listening to them. I've expanded my range, and most significantly so in the last 3-4 years. Prior to being "enlightened" I must have been in a vacuum of stagnation. I'm so glad I was set free! The people around me seem still to be stuck there and that's okay for them. Musically speaking (and even in other areas as well) I seem to share more in common with some of the younger crowd, and men in particular. Other than this list and maybe one other person, I have not met any other women who get into SG and similar or newer alternative-type (for lack of a better word and not wanting to spend the time to think of one) music. It also reinforces my theory that SG fans are a breed apart from any other fans. There's something else, something more than the music and being a fan of it. I hadn't shared it with anyone else (band or person) before SG and this mailing list. Will I experience anything like it in my future? I don't know, anything can happen. I sort of challenge it to happen, but don't care if it does. I get everything I need of that nature already. Why mess with a good thing? And still, I think it highly unlikely anyway. Something else that this SG ride has given to me I think is a higher appreciation for other bands/performers. But the expectations are a little higher, the integrity is also higher, a more discerning taste. SG has (had) *so much*, sometimes performers who don't appear to have any are such a pathetic joke. So maybe it's just made us (oops only speaking for myself here) me a critical snob. You know, like they've ruined me for any other band (ahh, *that's* why they'll be my fave forever...:)) So, keep on rocking Vasant. Be proud to be a SG fan and ride the wave as long as you can and want to. And also keep an open mind with open ears and the future will be rich with musical changes and growth. But don't be afraid to have some constants as part of your life too. It's something to be admired and not ashamed of. If any of you are like me and others I've talked to, your love of and association with SG and this mailing list has given you untold amounts of grief, ribbing and downright malice from friends and family who usually tend to mask it under the guise of "worry" and "caring." To those people I say, "Whatever, but just SHUT THE FUCK UP, okay? I leave you and your music alone, please do the same for me. Thank you :))" Yeah, sorry for such an outburst, but sometimes.... And I'll back up the "only as old as you feel" deal. Honestly, sometimes I feel younger as the years go by instead of older. At least I'm somewhat wiser, but it doesn't mean I still can't be foolish and impulsive, which aren't always bad things. I don' think hitting any milestone birthday (ya know, 16, 18, 21 uh ohhh, 30, 35, 40....the black balloon celebrations) will affect me. It hasn't yet and I know some people who work themselves into it bad on those days. I don't get it. I guess that's living a life full of regrets and that's sad. So I try not to live that way, and sometimes it involves risk and change, but your happiness should be worth at least that much. Hmmm...so I'll leave it at that. It's kinda funny to see people's reactions when they come into my room. On the wall closest to the door, there are shelves with old stuffed animals and miniature rabbits from a collection I had as a kid. And then the rest of the room...let's just say it's a shrine to Soundgarden. From the floor to the ceiling I've got posters and pics gallore as well as the big DOTU stickers. This past year, I shared a locker with a girl who was also into Soundgarden. That too was filled with pics of Soundgarden and of Chris Cornell. Not just the door of it, but even the inside walls. It was kinda funny, after a while people refered to the locker as "THE shrine to Chris Cornell". What was kinda cool was that some people actually bowed or kneeled whenever we opened the locker. :o) Did anybody else have a locker full of Soundgarcen pics???? Since Soundgarden broke up, I was wondering what everyboy's favorite current band was. I'd definately have to go with Tool. I saw them at Lollapalooza and they were incredible. The two guitarists I most look up to for inspiration are Kim Thayil from SG and Adam Jones from Tool. I encorporate tidbits from both of their styles into my own. When the only music credit is givin to Chris you have to assume he wrote the solo. Even if he can't play it, he can still write it. Most solos are just scales that you've never heard of from Japan or Europe. If you look at Megadeth's liner notes it says solo: Dave or solo: Marty. Now, obviously there are gonna be more solos written by Megadeth's rythm guitarist than Soundgarden's because Dave Mustaine used to play lead guitar in Metallica way back when. I do think that Chris writes many of the solos because songs sound more coherent when one person writes all the music. There are a couple songs where the solo sticks out like a sore thumb and Kim probably wrote those solos while the music was someone elses. Like Bleed together, it just ain't right. There are more, but i have this hangover and it took me two minutes to type coherent. About my wall. I have the DOTU cover poster that I got out of the Pretty Noose EP, the FOBD vinyl, and four SG pictures I tore out of guitar magazines (although three of those pics are of Kim only) and the picture Tiffany sent me with my vinyl. I've played piano = since I was four, grew up with my dad's playing his stereo (who didn't), = and now i'm teaching myself guitar. in other words, the influence has = always been there. i've seen how music affects me--sometimes if I hear a = song from a certain "stage" in my life, it's almost as though I can = *smell* the first day I heard that song or a certain memory of where I = was --and actually feel as though I were there again. Certain sounds = have left such permanent impressions. This is why some of the music I have= i don't listen to any more at all--there are too many bad associations = made with the music, but I hold onto some of those albums anyway. I'm = too much of a sentimental/nostalgic person sometimes!! Soundgarden has that effect on me-- I will always associate SG with being = back in the States in Northern Virginia after not having been here for 3 = years (even though I am American) and certain personal experiences = surrounding that situation. Now I'm in Chicago and have a chance to learn = and experience live jazz and blues for the first time, first = hand...something i've always wanted to learn more about but never had the = opportunity (it's a pity you have to be 21 to experience the live music = most of the time). So yeah, it's the next chapter.... Music is a reflection of your soul. Just as you change and develop, so will your musical tastes. Here is my thinkings on the musical influence of Kim. Whoever said Chris writes the solo because he writes the music is crap. If you write the song you write the melody and rythm. You can put in a solo, but you don't have to and it doesn't make the song sound any worse. And who says Kim writes his solos. Like Phish, I feel SG does a lot of improvising, meaning that KIm's solos can be "made up" while he plays. If you listen to the music some of the things he does you know he is improvising. I'm not saying Chris doesn't write any solos. I'm saying that SG does a lot more than write. They are one of the few bands that have tha ability to take a song and make it a little different each time. Whoever said their songs were set in stone. I wish I had a SG shrine. We live in a really old house and the walls in my room were messed up. To fix them (by this I mean to make them look better) my mother got "creative" and made them even bumpier with joint compound. So needless to say, it's hard to get stuff to hang on my walls. And you guys know that old saying...."Hell hath no fury like a SG freak with a hole in her poster because she tried to hang it on a bumpy wall." :) But I'm accumulating a nice little SG collection all the same. Of course, posters aren't the first thing I look for since I can't actually hang them, but I do have a couple of them and I have several SG/Chris Cornell pics from magazines that I might have blown up someday. My SG "shrine" mainly consists of other assorted SG toys. I have 25 audio boots, 5 video boots, both home videos, Kaiser Kellar video, 2 tv compilation videos, 3 books about/and or related to the band, a couple of SG t-shirts (the only ones I've found in town) plus an official SOMMS shirt on the way (THANKS DENA!). I get catalogues in the mail with SG stuff in them that I swear I'm going to get and then I see the prices. When I regain consciousness, I decide to wait a while. :) So I have started one and someday when I have competent walls that are far away from my mother...I'm going to let my SG collection blossom into that rockin' flower that it is. (Did you notice that I used "rockin' flower" and SG has a song called Flower that rocks? Coincidence? I think not!) May Soundgarden be with you. I completely disagree with this. I do not think any of the solo's in SG songs "stick out like a sore thumb" due to the fact that Kim wrote the solo after Chris showed the band the main riff of a song. Bleed Together might not be the best SG song ever written either, but the solo sure doesn't stick out badly. It doesn't even grate against the song in any way at all, IMO. In most bands it's the person (or persons) that comes up with the structure of the song or the main riff that gets the music credit, not the solo. In Metallica, Kirk Hammett writes most of the solos, but he doesn't get a songwriting credit for it. If he had a riff for the song, though, he would then get a credit for it. I said nowhere in my post that if Chris writes a solo that makes it worse. I would like to restate the fact that most bands give musical credit to the person who writes the solo, and that solos are changes in scales (mostly) and that people who can't play solos can still write them. I once again fall back on the history of Metallica. Kirk Hammett plays most of the solos with exceptions like the first one in Master of Puppets. Now, how many of the solos prior to And Justice For All did he write? About 1! First Metallica stole Hugh Tanner's songs, and then kicked Dave Mustaine out of the band and stole his stuff (some of which he used later i.e. Call of Ktulu to Hangar 18 and the intro to Motorbreath becomes FFF), and then Cliff and James wrote all the leads. "Kirk is a yes man, yes James, I'll play that" is what Dave said. So why doesn't James play the leads he writes? James is incredibly uncomfortable playing even rythm guitar while singing. At one time Metallica asked (I forgot his name) some dude to do their vocals so James could play rythm guitar without having to sing. Maybe James plays better guitar than Chris, but I still beleive that Chris is more than capable of writing a solo. Many of SG's solos are improvised, but that is mainly for stage performance. The LP version of a song needs to be coherent unless your going for this one take method that ultrapot Black Crows are interested in. So go look at your Megadeth liner notes and see how it tells who writes the solo. Now since SG doesn't do that I am VERY inclined to assume that one of the people givin the musical credit on a track wrote the solo. And by saying that I'm also saying that when a single person gets musical credit, that I beleive he/she wrote all the parts fot all the instruments. Go find out about the history of Motorbreath. Ohh, by the way. Dan, you have no right to call my belief crap. How would you feel if I said Soundgarden sucked. You'd hate me and say that I have no right to say such things. There are a couple > songs where the solo sticks out like a sore thumb and Kim probably wrote just as an aside, the lead section from 'bleed together' rocks, imho. I never even considered it a sore thumb. for those who are interested, here is a short piece from guitar player '97 that might clear a few heads on the topic of soloing, composition and soundgarden - GP: Do you ever map out your solos before recording them? KT: Never on paper. There have been a few solos where I liked what I was initially doing, and I'd go back and try it again until I had it down. The solo on "No Attention" was more like an actual part than a solo. After cutting the first track, I decided I wanted to double the same part an octave up. I figured it out a section at a time and practiced it. By then I'd memorized each phrase, and I went back and recorded it an octave up. I did the same thing on Louder than Love's "Big Dumb Sex" and on Superunknown's "Fourth of July" and "Fresh Tendrils." My attitude is that some solos should be angry bashing and punching of the guitar, some should be chaotic with lots of triplets, and some should be melodic, like on "Fourth of July." In fact my own favorite solos are probably "Like Suicide," "Fourth of July" and "Slaves and Bulldozers." GP: Why those three? KT: Because I can't imagine doing them any better. They fit the song so well, whereas when I hear the solo on "Loud Love" I think, "God, that stinks! I can't believe I let it go out that way. I could have done something so much better than that. Why didn't I?" I can be real self-conscious and anal about what I do. I mean, I was bitching endlessly about the solo on "Blow Up the Outside World." I finally had to relax and trust the guys that it was cool. I particularly like having Matt around when I do solos. I've learned more about being a guitarist by my musical and personal relationship with Matt. He's always been very supportive of my abilities, and I feel more confident because of that. He made me feel secure about the noisier stuff I do as well. So when I'm tracking a solo, if he digs it and I dig it, it's on. GP: Do you solo in the same tuning the song is in? KT: Yeah. Actually, it was during the making of Superunknown that Chris realized that. We were in the studio recording "Head Down," and he asked me, "Don't you want to tune that guitar up?" and I said, "It's in tune." He goes, "You're going to solo in that tuning?" "Yeah. What tuning would you expect me to solo in?" "I thought you soloed in standard tuning." "Well, how would that work live? I wouldn't have the time to quickly tune up or grab another guitar." Standard tuning allows you to retreat to certain box patterns -- y'know, here's the solo and it's in this key. But if I solo in the same tuning as the song I can stumble around and have that same kind of serendipity you get writing riffs in weird tunings. As far as improvising stuff, it's usually just a function of knowing where the different octave positions are. You can use those sympathetic notes and let them drone as you move up the neck playing a scale." hope that helps. justin ----- in your real life, treat it like it's special in your real life, try to be more kind in your real life, think of those that love you in this real life, try to be less blind words by vernon reid ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Aug 1997 00:02:15 -0400 From: Justin Kerner Subject: Re: Favortite Current Band?
