Its always the first one I listen to. Anyway, most lead guitarists get shafted when it comes to writing. Its a fact. Look at U2's the Edge, he lost a lot of influence. Kirk Hammett never wrote anything in the early days, he still doesn't write that much, Kirk is the "yes man" according to Dave Mustaine. Lead guitarists end up playing many of the licks that the rythm guitaris/vocalist can't play while singing at the same time (many of Kirk's leads were written by Cliff who played like a guitarist). Leads written by rythm guitarists is also true for Megadeth, Smashing Pumpkins, and some NIN tracks. I posted like a day or tow ago about how my mom listens to the music from her highschool days, but had to respond to this: <<< I'd like to think I'll keep my taste in music current with what's around rather than being grouchy about how crappy music is these days.>>> Hmmm, I hate what is coming out these days and I'm only 16. Maybe its 'cause I'm a musician, but I hate almost everything that comes out. There are really only 7 bands that I would go to see in concert and half of them have stopped putting out good stuff. (i.e. Alice in Chains is probably dead with Jerry seeking a solo career, Metallica's Load sucked, Megadeth's Cryptic Writings sucked, Pumpkins have gone techno after their run in with Trent and Queensryche's Hear in the Now Frontier I didn't even buy) I'm hoping that their will be a new wave of metal and meaningful rock. None of this bubblegum crap (Tonic, Sugar Ray, Puff Daddy). I beleive that most of music's problem stems from the fact that players are getting a sound out of their preamps and rigs and are going with effects to create a sound. By possesing no real talent or speed guitarist are deevovling in to hundreds of KoRn clones like OPH, White Zombie or the ever crappy Powerman 5000. A lot of bands that do have good (even awesome) guitarist have REALLY sub-par singers like Slayer, Pantera, Deftones and Extreme. METAL UP YOUR ASS! (Kill 'Em All) Rich "NO ONE WILL EVER MISS YOU!" True, Chris dominates the songwriting credits, but I don't think anyone here would argue the point that without Kim Thayil there would have been no Soundgarden. If it comes down to printed credit, his name may have appeared but a few times -- but it's *where* his name appears that counts. Some of the important ones: - Hunted Down: music. Soundgarden's first single. Enough said. - Nothing To Say: music. The b-side to SG's first single. The band establishes its candidacy for the slow-and-heavy title. (hell, Kim wrote the music for everything on Screaming Life) - Flower: music. Without the otherworldly blowing-on-the-strings intro to the song and the album, there is no Ultramega OK. That few seconds of music is one of the ones I most often repeat. - Incessant Mace: music. Essential early Soundgarden. Possibly one of the very first SG tracks written, maybe even existing before Deep Six. A great example of the trademark groove. - Get On The Snake: music. A 9/4 riff. Classic Thayil. - Room A Thousand Years Wide: lyrics. A rare credit for lyrics. This song of course was the earliest of the Badmotorfinger tunes, with words and guitar work that gives me chills. Possibly my favorite Soundgarden song at the moment. - New Damage: music. Have you ever listened to the riff? Enough said. Like a Mack truck. - Limo Wreck: music. The art of the dirge is perfected. - Never The Machine Forever: music and lyrics. The only song to be fully credited to Kim, and easily the most rhythmically and lyrically interesting song on Down On The Upside. A wild departure from the rest of the album. - Blind Dogs: music. If you haven't heard this one, run -- do not walk -- and buy the Basketball Diaries soundtrack immediately. Soundgarden prove they can still pen a non-album track. - Heretic: music. Embodies everything early Soundgarden was about: swiftly changing rhythms, the big riff, and Chris Cornell's scream. Not to mention Kim's solos and his live performance, his intellect and sense of humor, and his beard. -seth ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Aug 1997 00:08:24 -0700 From: Michael Roberson Subject: Re: Touch Me, I'm Rich??? I was having an uneventful visit to the eye doctor the other day. Of course they were running at least an hour behind so I'm stuck. After I finished counting the different designs on the wallpaper I decide to read a magazine. Well, they had a great selection: Good Housekeeping, Highlights, and YM. I read the Highlights first!!! :) After I was done with it I picked up the YM. I was flipping through it when something caught my eye. And who was it but the tasty and beautiful Chris Cornell. It was some stupid article saying how "celebs" have changed their hair. Of course I ripped CC's pic out and it said "The Soundgarden singer'd make us drool even if he had fluorescent green dreds. At lest now we can see his baby blues!" Blah, blah blah, yack, yack, yack. Oh, there are 2 pics: one of him with long hair and one of him with short hair. DUH!!! Equally great looking if you ask me. :) Anyhoo, thought I would share. Also, would it not just blow your mind (Hootchies mainly) to see Chris in a "Milk, Where's your mustache?" advertisement. No shirt on just standing there with the little milk mustache and his feel-sorry-for-me-yet-you-can-go-fuck-off put saying something like "Milk is yummy and so am I!!! HAHAHA!!! Oh wait, how about Ben...his slogan would probably be "Hey, fuck you!!" Nothing to do with milk but hey!!! I'm not sure what Matt's or Kim's slogan could be. Let me get back to you on those, or if ya'll have any good ones, share with me. Then they would have to make billboards and everything. Darn the luck!!! Oh well, one can only hope. They used to play a lot more SG too but now its more a poppy sound that's being played on the so-called modern rock station. I hardly listen to the radio now. I just play my cds. The stuff that's being played doesn't require a lot of talent. It sounds like they pick up a guitar and play 2 chords or something. Sublimes all right sometimes but its overplayed along with the others like those jerks the Bosstones (I met them, they are totally full of themselves). Now it seems like the radio thinks they shouldn't play SG because they broke up. If you've looked at the top ten it isn;t something to be proud of. One time I called to request a SG song in a special radio time thats late at night called the Pit. Its supposed to be a time they play more heavier music. No but instead they play Korn ( they play the same 2 or so songs every night) and Tool, which I think is good music but they are overplayed during "the Pit". I don't think kim got shafted at all. go back and read any of the guitar publications that hit the stands around the same time as _down on the upside_. all of them asked, among other things, basically the same question - why the lack of song writing credit, kim? I admire kim for being totally honest in his responses. he would mention that yes, he used to write the bulk of soundgarden material and that yes, he was disappointed that more of his own songs didn't make the latest record. he would then go on to say that since all four members of the band actively write, there was a tendency to record those songs that were most complete, in terms of music, lyrics and arrangement. that would leave little room or opportunity to pursue those songs that were only halfway there; in most cases these were demos by matt or kim, since neither of them were particularly strong at, or perhaps inclined to, writing lyrics. so I would argue that kim's lack of credit on _dotu_ or his own lack of satisfaction with it is, while obviously a matter of circumstance, a product of his own song-writing process, or even his role in the band's writing process. it certainly isn't a result of some internal politics; chris and ben calling the shots, matt and kim bowing and scraping like song-less serfs. perhaps if he had spent more time actualising his own material things would have turned out differently. who knows? I *do* know that kim can still write awesome music, riffs that either creep up your spine, blow your socks off or both. if the band had spent more time with the record, I can almost guarantee that the liner would have included 'music: thayil' quite a few more times than it does. interestingly, kim commented in a number of publications that even though he might be disappointed with his input in terms of composition, he still pretty much *owned* the guitar on _dotu_ (I'd just like to argue strongly with _guitar world_ for a moment, who claim that most of the leads on _dotu_ are chris'. where the hell did they come up with that?). remember that on every song kim contributes his own voice; many of the guitar parts, from the incidental flourishes to the full-blown lead breaks, were his to create. I think this is where kim could be most creative, and I for one am not unhappy with what he gave us. justin ----- my very own crush rotation -- the family - satchel interiors - brad ok computer - radiohead the will to live - ben harper a ass pocket of whiskey - rl. burnside. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Aug 1997 22:23:32 -0400 From: Charlie Mccutcheon Subject: SG DREAM i'm a certified nerd ....i had an sg dream. here it goes (it's been edited down to the sg related stuff) : i went next door w/ a copy of superunkown to help my sister find a deal on brakes. anyway this person was melissa ethridge (?) or some such singer & she had a german soundgarden book, a drum kit, elec.guitar& accoustic bass guitar. i went back to my sisters and back to the other person's place. soundgarden showed up (?!?) and i (being the guitarist extraordiniare i am;)) offerred to play like suicide w/ them. we're in some trailer thing &some pregnantgirl shows up & i ask if she's w/ somms. she says "yes" i say "cool"! so we play & i can't hear anything but i'm happy anyway. the end. charlie ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Aug 1997 22:30:23 -0400 From: Dena White Subject: HUH? the damn heat had melted my brain.. but for the life of me I cant figure out what this means.... can you please clarify?!
