And good morning. It's 2:19 a.m. here in Maryland and I am still up listening and thinking about Soundgarden. I recently bought Louder Than Love and I heard the song Big Dumb Sex, of course.. My first impression was that it was a kewl song, but I wasn't really paying attention to the lyrics and stuff because I was just amazed at their sound back then and I was very intrigued. Then later I read the lyrics and my first reaction was being hysterical. I couldn't help but laugh at the lyrics.. not because they were bad! NO way! I love the song, it's just that the lyrics seemed kinda comical to me. "..Don't you be afraid to tell me, Tell me if you think it's ugly, But now don't you want to touch it anyway" I like those lyrics.. those made me laugh. It's best describes a woman who desperately "needs some" even though she may think this guy's pretty "nasty looking".. I dunno.. But then again, I see this song as a potential turn on. "Don't you don't you want to thrill me.." Sure Chris, I'm pretty sure a lot of girls would say so. "..And you ain't had nothing like me yet" How true, how true!! :) "..Don't you think it's time for motion, I can take what you've been pushin'.." Speaks for itself.. "Hey, I know what to do, I'm gonna fuck fuck fuck fuck you fuck you.. (sorry for the bad lang :)" And these lyrics absolutely speak for themselves..Then there's that part that says "I'm the beast and you're the master, You the meat of the matter, I'm no fool for discretion, When it's on the tip of my tongue.." Hmmm.... Was there a full moon out when he wrote this? Or is Chris just a very sexual person.. I believe that it's both.. he'd probably say so too.. These lyrics sure do leave nothing to the imagination :) .... These lyrics give people strange thoughts, if you know what I mean.. Well anyways.. just wanted to bring it up.. I would say good night to you all but it's morning here.. Now it's 2:31 and I must also mention that Beavis and Butt-Head looked at SG's BHS vider twice tonight and they still love SG!!! Later! Kick Ass... -Maria ___ Got my arms around baby brother Put your hands away Your gonna kill your mother, (gonna kill your mother) Kill your mother And I love her ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 02:46:30 -0400 From: Dena White Subject: SOMMS SHIRTS!!!!!! I just got finished with my other e-mail.. But I have to point out another song that made me laugh when I found it's meaning.. It's kinda sad yet it's kinda funny when you think about it. It's with the meaning of Like Suicide (which u probably know already but..) Here's Chris' story that I will quote from the CD Book of SG.. (B.T.W. I've done a lot of quoting for this list :) LIKE SUICIDE Strangely impenetrable and much misunderstood, this song was not in fact inspired by human tragedy, as Chris explains: "I was writing the music to that in my basement when I heard this loud thump from above. I thought someone was trying to break in, so I was going up the stairs to investigate when I heard it again---THUMP! When I got to the door, there was this beautiful female Robin writhing on the ground. She'd broken her neck, flying into the window. It was obviously broken, flipped back, but she was still breathing. So I went and found this cinder block and smashed her head with it. Then I went back downstairs and I just wrote about the incident. It seemed opportune---someone, or someone else's misery, can often be a great opportunity for a song." Odd huh? When I read it in the beginning I was thinking, "Awww!!!" In this picture in my head with Chris at the door looking down at the Robin thinking that next he'd called some animal place or whatever, but then the cinder block came into play and I just laughed.. Thinking, "Yup.. that would be Chris, alright!" Be rid of you! It's kinda funny yet kinda sad because he "murdered" the Robin in a way (don't mind me.. it's real early in the morning and I think that it's a full moon :) you know, the bird was dead, but he killed it..(actually he just helped it get rid of it misery) actually I still think it's little hilarious.. Oh, well.. I always liked that song.. now I have another reason to do so... :) (Now when I think about it, maybe Chris couldn't bare to have seen that beautiful Robin so hurt and in pain.. ) This should be the last one for this morning.. It's now 2:46 am here in Maryland.. Later Kick Ass!! -Maria ___ Heard it from another room Eyes were waking up just to fall asleep Love's like suicide Dazed out in a garden bed With a broken neck lays my broken gift Just like suicide And my last ditch Was my last brick Lent to finish her Finish her @-----}------- THIS FLOWER GOES OUT TO THE BEAUTIFUL ROBIN THAT DECIDED TO BREAK IT'S NECK ON CHRIS' PROPERTY. THANK YOU FOR DOING SO, SO THAT MR. CORNELL COULD WRITE SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SONG ABOUT IT. R.I.P.. i wonder if the robin's parents can sue chris for that or maybe chris could sue the robin's parents for possible damaged property or a damage cinder block... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 02:48:41 -0400 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: how long will it last? It will last as long as you want it to. Your tastes will probably "evolve" more than actually "change." I'm 36. When I think about what I listened to as a child (even at age 3 I was an avid radio listener and had favorite rock songs), as a teenager, as a college student, and now, I can see a natural progression, and a lot of common threads. I still like a lot of the old stuff, though you can get tired of hearing the same thing over and over. This may even happen eventually with SG, but then you will likely just *rest* awhile, and then go back to them fresh. As for "mellowing" with age in respect to musical preferences, well, all I can say is that my tastes got stranger and edgier in general as more interesting underground music became available to me. I just naturally gravitated toward punk and hard rock. It had nothing to do with age or what anyone else I knew was listening to. I like a lot of kinds of music, but I'm sure I will always prefer "rock". Hell, my mom's 61 and still likes rock. She used to take me and my friends to concerts, and she enjoyed them every bit as much as we did. She used to help me sneak Led Zeppelin records into the house (because she liked them too and my dad hated them). She even likes some SG stuff (though she's probably really tired of hearing about them all the time!) Why can't you imagine listening to SG when you're 60? You will still be you. So, fuck the stereotypes, you're only as old as you feel! Only people like us would be >trying to start a pit. Hmmm...I think you're missing the point here, Richard. Chris did not write 4th July as background music, but as something to be listened to and appreciated. The fact that some people at a party might ignore it/wander off to get a drink ( IMO a lesser offence than moshing to it ;-) does not make it either ambient or background music. Vasant asked: > So, to the adult SOMMSters, the question is, do you feel your musical > tastes have changed significantly since you were a teenager? Ever heard the phrase you're as old as you feel? :-) You might be surprised if you knew what those boring, middle aged people you see in the supermarket or collecting their kids from school actually loved listening to. Some of them may have settled for more mainstream stuff, but a lot of us haven't. This goes for other things besides music. I still listen to music I loved when I was much younger than you are now. And as some one who was in her mid- thirties before she'd even heard of Soundgarden, I'm definitely planning on being at the Soundgarden blue-rinse reunion tour in 2018! What you might find happening is that your musical tastes get wider as you get older, which can only be a good thing. Speaking from personal experience, I'm also mch more tolerent about music I don't much care for than I was in my teens. I just ignore it/go and find something to drink ;-) UKDeb ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 02:21:07 -0600 From: "Jason S. When there are more I listen to SG. See, it all depends on the setting. I know Chris did not intend for his music to be overlooked but you have too remember that most Djs are krakheads (at least the St. Louis ones self righteous bastards won't even play Lords of Acid or SG) and what they say means about as much as Hit Parader. <> Should I have? Everyone's address isn't even known? << Do you think you will be listening to SG when you are a senior citizen? When I saw Chuck Berry (got in free 'cause my brother runs every show) live I just thought, "Boy, chuck really only knows one lick" Its funny 'cause my bro turns to me and says "Rich, if we were kids in the fifties we would be rockstars because no one could play" Chuck does a nice stand up routine though despite the fact that all his jokes are written on this handkercheif he carries. So, no matter what kind of talent comes out in the future, you'll probably listen to SG in the future because old habits are hard to break (or is it you can't teach...wait, no). Hey Vasant, counting the days and there are not too many now...GOOD LUCK! I guess I can answer these questions being a senior citizen on the list. Jen and UKDeb hit the nail on the head with the statement" you are only as old as you feel" Of course some mornings I feel like shit but than that's a post for the "aches and pains" newsgroup. I have recently gone through all my old albums(they were not called vinyl back than) out in the garage and it was amazing the variety I had. Some I fondle lovingly , read the song titles , sang a few bars and thought to myself I should buy this on CD(if I haven't already) because I still love these songs. Others, I looked around to see if anyone saw I had such crap in my posession!! And wondered why in the hell did I ever buy this much less listen to it!!?!!? I loved the Rolling Stones when I was 10 years old. I have seen them in concert 6 times and I plan on going again when they tour this fall. And even though they are all in their 50's they can rock with the best of them and put on quite a show. There are alot of bald heads and sagging boobs at these concerts but for 2 hours these ppl. who might have a ton of responsibilities, 4 kids and a mortgage can give up all their care and woes and find a little of that youth and wild spirit that has always been rock and roll! I discovered Soundgarden in my mid 30's and have loved them with an intensity I thought I'd lost for music BUTT discovered I still had. What a wonderful feeling that was. And also what a good feeling to go to a SG concert and have fans who didn't look at me with that look of,"what the hell are you doing here, you old bag" All the Soundgarden fans I have encountered have been great . Will you like SG in 30 years, Vasant?? No one can say whether you will or not. I know an awful lot of ppl. who are firmly entrenched in middle age and Michael Bolton is the soundtrack for their life But I think Soundgarden is truly a great band that will hold up to the test of time. And you will still be pulling out BMF or Zep IV when the kids are tucked in bed!! toni ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 12:45:37 -0400 From: Jamesetta Simpson Subject: Re: How Long Will It Last?... > So, to the adult SOMMSters, the question is, do you feel your musical > tastes have changed significantly since you were a teenager? Do you think > you will be listening to SG when you are a senior citizen? Thanks. > > Vasant There are two ways to look at this issue of age and musical likes.. Your musical tastes always change they do for many reasons. The music they played in the 60's is so different from today's music but I remember it and loved hearing it today - but I prefer hearing bands like Tonic, Rule 62, Matchbox 20, Reef and others. So as the music changes over the years so does ones tastes. This I see as normal. On the other hand I started loving so called "Rock N' Roll" before I was a teenager (believe me when I was a teenager most of your parents were still in diapers) and so help me I love it more today then I did then. According to AARP (American Association for Retired People) I'm a senior citizen and here I am on a mailing list for Soundgarden (been here since day one of the list), I went to three of their concerts last year, own almost everything they put out on CD and vinyl, met the members of Soundgarden and other members of the SOMMs list in Chicago, and plan on going to their reunion show in 20 years! You can't put an age on something you love doing. Sure maybe you slow down or change your ways of looking at those loves but if you truly have a deep love for it, it won't go away. Lyrics are supposed to touch the soul, and the one who touches you the most is the one for you. You can't sit down, write out the pros and cons of each, and come to a rational decision based on fact. For me, it all goes much deeper than that. And for me Chris wins. Dan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 22:48:37 -0400 From: Igor Nepomnyashchiy Subject: WHo's better? I agree with a posting i just read about how whichever one touches you, that one best. I must say that even though i like Smashing Pumpkins very much, i can still not think of one SP song that could come even close to songs like Day I tried To Live or Black Whole Sun, or such clever recording as on 665. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 23:03:41 -0400 From: Pam Underwood Subject: aol chating Hey all you AOL sommsters in the chat area under Arts and Enertainment there is a beautiful room called SOUNDGARDEN. And I'm only twenty! Mind you, that probably means I don't qualify as an adult SOMMSter - people who know me would testify to that too... :> While my basic taste in music isn't changing, it can't help but evolve, and I'm now listening to stuff that I would've written off as garbage only a year ago (when I was nineteen) - some of these changes I would rate as significant. No, I'm not going to start listening to Mariah Carey, I can't ever see myself respecting her work or any other works of similar calibre. While this taste in music evolves, the CDs in heavy rotation follow similarly. But that doesn't mean I still don't like to listen to virtually all the other stuff in the collection. >Do you think >you will be listening to SG when you are a senior citizen? I think Soundgarden will be the perfect example of something I'll be "dusting off" in twenty years time, maybe playing only once a month, if that. Please don't get me wrong - I have nothing but the highest regard for Soundgarden now and I can't see that changing in the future. But music collections are so dynamic that something new is bound to come along - it is unlikely to be better than Soundgarden in my view. That doesn't matter - it's new, it wants to be played. And once in a while it will tweak - "dagnabit, I haven't played SG in an age - where's my Badmotorfinger CD?" So if that's the case, then what will happen as a senior citizen? Will I reminisce back to "the good old days" when I was listening to the music I am now? I hope not. I'd like to think I'll keep my taste in music current with what's around rather than being grouchy about how crappy music is these days. That said, I think there will always be room for Soundgarden on my stereo - as long as CD players are around long enough! No amount of music anthologies/discussion will ever get away from how subjective such a debate really is when talking about two such talented writers. You can get into the nitty-gritty technical side of the music writing ability and production, but lyrics are a very much harder area to work in, let alone how a band works with their own restrictions...
