Respected by who? You all say that I'm missing the point of Johnny Cash's cover. You are all missing my point. IT SUCKS. I don't care if he is a respected musician. I hate The Doors. I hate The Rolling Stones. I tought the point of ALL music was to be entertaining. HAVE YOU HEARD THE BOOSTONES COVER OF ENTER SANDMAN? Yeah, I hate Bosstones too, but this is DAMN entertaining. The interlude "Now, I lay me down to sleep" DAMN, thats fuckin' hilarious. Sure, it sucks too because they kinda decided to skip the solo. They do do a good job of playing essential notes to make it sound like its there but the whole run is gone. Back to my point, Johnny Cash does not have the artistic ability of Chris Cornell. Ohh yeah, about the Jazzmaster. First off (I know I quote Guitar Player too much) Guitar Player said, "Its suprising because Kim Thayil gets most of his tone from the way he plays, not his guitar" THis is the same with several other guitarists (like Kirk) because they glide on the fret board for better sustain. It may not have been entirely that Jazzmaster, but it was the combination of A) the jazzmaster, B) whatever effects hes using and C) his amp that didn't sound good. And the final nail in the coffin. Gavin of Bush (hey, were B*U*S*H, we put stars in between letters, we suck) plays a Jazzmaster. Remember the '57 telecaster? But I want to know what and ambient sound is >and if this album really would be out in a couple of months like they said. I'm sure Brian's post will be the start of a long - and lively - thread :-) My dictionary's definition of ambient music is.. " ambient music is produced using computers and consists of electronic sound intended to create background atmosphere rather than to be danced to or listened to." Personally, I can't see Chris swapping emotive lyrics and great guitar for the sounds of whales mating and banks of keyboards. And since when has anything he's ever done (with Soundgarden or solo) been *background* music? ;-) If there's any substance in what those dee jays were saying, (and there might be some), I'd take 'ambient' to mean more in the vein of Applebite or Boot Camp. And how do you define 'poppier'? I consider Burden In My Hand or Fell On Black Days as 'poppier' (as in radio friendly) than say, Beyond The Wheel. But that's just *my* take on ambient and poppy. As for a release in a couple of months, I'm guessing that's the Great Expectations soundtrack. But we shouldn't necessarily take one track with Eleven as giving any real indication of what to expect from Chris solo. I was at a very good Pearl Jam site a few days ago and I saw this pic of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam at Lollapalooza. It's just them hanging around and I thought that it was pretty kewl because the members of Pearl Jam were kinda looking at the camera and the members of Soundgarden weren't paying any attention to it. Chris had his feet propped up reading a magazine, Matt was making this funny face, Ben was all the way in the back looking bored, and Kim sat stiff with his dark shades on... Also.. at the Pearl Jam site I pirinted out this picture of Pearl Jam and then later on looked at it more carefully and realized that Jeff Ament and Mike McCready were wearing Soundgarden shirts (they always do, I know that) and Jeff was wearing that shirt with the bands faces on them (just like the poster in S.F.W.) and McCready had a Badmotorfinger shirt on.. Also, Jeff had this shirt on one time with Matt's face on it and I thought that one was kewl... Also, about S.F.W. (a very very very very good movie), I was kinda pissed because during the destruction of the room scene, Spab's bro took the kewl SG poster of the wall and put it thought and over his head and ran around with it on.. then his through it on the ground. They claim to have worked with Soudgarden in the past. Anyway they are pretty well hooked up in the music scene down here (L.A.) since they've been engineering for like 22 years. And they both know I'm a SG freak so about two or three months ago they tell me that Chris is in L.A. starting to work on putting together some music for a solo album and to keep my fingers crossed because they were trying to work with him again but it was all up in the air. And that they thought he was shooting for an August release. So since this question has been popping up lately, I thought I'd share what I 'heard'. Overfloater, imhfo, doesn't even come close, but i appreciate it very much... in a way it really seemed like a departure for Sg, and i think it's very eclectic the way it opens kinda shades of Applebite, gets really sleepy & dark, then comes alive w/ the pounding chorus and chris' howling... lyrically i think it parallels (and far surpasses) Dusty, "i'm on the wire, over and higher..." very bright, hopeful & optimistic. >I used to wish for about two months after the break up for >Soundgarden to miraculously get back together, but I finally realized it >was over, and I was never going to see them perform live. I can only >hope to maybe someday see Hater, and Chris play, and whatever the >Kimster decides to do. it's been close to 4 months for me. i've just recently truly begun to realize that wishing, willing them back together is futile. the break up happened for a reason. was it the right reason? *was* it amicable? *was* it of one accord? do they have regrets? will they ever have a change of heart? we don't know. maybe one day we will. but it happened, and the only ones who can turn it around are Soundgarden... and if they don't, it's not and end, it's a beginning. of course i still hope- i think about it every day! maybe someday we *will* see Soundgarden again... and maybe we won't. but as sure as the sun & stars we *will* see *them* again- Chris, Ben, Matt & Kim... and i know that when i do, i'll look up at the stage, smile w/ pride & say "he used to be a part of the greatest band ever, a band that changed my life, a band i loved- *love*- w/ all my heart". and that's all that matters, ya know? for those of us who were fortunate enough to see them live, it was an amazing experience, one never to be forgotten... and for those of us who haven't, it's a terrible loss, maybe one to always regret... but if we love them, if they've touched our lives, then we *were* in front of that stage, no matter when, no matter where- our living room one afternoon, our backyard late one night- and that's s'thing no one, no thing, can ever take away. >I jsut saw the video for Johnny Cash's cover of Rusty Cage, and boy >did it suck. Johnny is no Chris Cornell. The song just isn't the same >when you can understand the lyrics. The worst part has to be that >Jazzmaster that his guitarist is playing. What a piece of shit. That >thing has the worst tone I've heard in a while. I think Johnny >should've at least tried to scream like Chris *ahem*, richard... i believe justin hit the nail right on the head w/ his reply, but i just *have* to add..... no band- past, present or future- could ever come close to capturing the spirit of Sg, no singer or composer could ever even hope of emulating the power and beauty of CC's voice and poetry. therefore, if ever a Sg cover (as in duplicate) band does form, i will *not* go to see them, in fact, i'd avoid them at all costs. it would only depress me, b/c i'd be wishing it was really them, and probly thoroughly piss me off, b/c it would be a disservice to them. Rusty Cage by Johnny Cash is Rusty Cage by Johnny Cash, not Rusty Cage by Chris Cornell as covered by Johnny Cash. and i enjoyed it very much. viva variety! comprende? ciao... As for even older people, I have a friend who is in his late 40's who grew up listening to Zeppelin, Floyd, etc.. I played some Soundgarden and Pearl Jam for him several times and he loves the music. I think SG is timeless, of course that is just my opinion. Sometimes I worry if I will lose my interest in SG and the other bands I listen to PJ, Pumpkins, etc... But if I have anything to do with it I will be jamming out to SG until the day I die!! As for being 60 and listening to it, of course! I expect CC to be still making music even then! :) Randy On Fri, 1 Aug 1997, Vasant Ramamurthy wrote: > Okay, this question is posed towards the older SOMMSters, especially those > who are married and have kids. I just want to say that just hearing all these stories of when people met Soundgarden brings a tear to my eye.. I'm glad everyone who's met them had such a wonderful experience.. :) Kick Ass.... -Maria ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 1 Aug 1997 to 2 Aug 1997 **********************************************
