Maybe because the original lyrics conveyed > the same message of humans destroying the Earth. I think I just answered my try the faq, section 2.13 (written by seth perlman ;) - Chief Sealth was the American Indian after whom Seattle was named. The band used his commentary, albeit in a slightly shorter and modified version, on the ideas and social actions of the Europeans coming to America as lyrics to their cover version of Black Sabbath's "Into the Void" (originally from their Masters of Reality album) which was the lead track on their SOMMS disc. Kim explains thusly: "That was our bass player's idea. Ben Shepherd. He noticed a similarity in the meter of the lyrics and Chris made them fit. It was just such a Seattle thing to cover a Sabbath song, and then use the lyrics of the man whom our town was named after. Kinda funny. Born of sincerity, but it also had its humour." It supposedly was Ben's idea to use Chief Sealth's words. Any SOMMSters in the Huntington, WV area (southern OH, Ashland, KY, Charleston,WV et al)? It would also be cool to "converse" with any of you bass players out there (I know there are at least a couple of ya!) I know most online CD stores have a t-shirt section, so check those out. (CDnow.com has a decent selection) Here's the best SG selection of t-shirts I've found so far: http://www.tshirtnow.com/ Just search through the band list and SG is pretty easy to find Larry ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jul 1997 12:08:57 EDT From: seth Subject: wir klonen deine Mutter... I'm back from the European adventure, and I didn't see much in the way of Soundgarden stuff. There was a copy of BMF/SOMMS in Germany, but other than that, nothing beyond the regular albums (though there is nothing regular about any of them (well, except maybe... never mind)). I did see a book called Ultramega Rock, which turns out to be Chris Nickson's New Metal Crown republished in February 1997 in Italian, with an updated chronology in the back. Talk about bad timing: that's the second book in Italy (along with Gianni Sibilla's Nel Giardino del Suono) to be published right before the band broke up. I've been skimming the digests to catch up, and I noticed a few questions that I might be able to answer that hopefully weren't covered in some message I skipped over... First, someone asked where the photo of Matt in his SOMMS hat was. It's at [deleted. -seth], as part of [deleted. -seth], the collection of photos from the Chicago gathering at which about 20 list members met the band. Second, there has been a lot of the "Are there any list members in...?" questions. I don't know an efficient way to deal with this, though I know it's definitely not something I want to constitute 50% of list traffic. In the not-so-old days we had a member directory, with profiles of list members, including where they were from, which would have solved that. However, anyone who's looked at it recently knows that it's horrendously out-of-date. The truth is that it's not going to get any better, either, because I have no plans to update it (if someone would like to take it over, by all means contact me directly). As for a country by country breakdown, the list really got cleaned out after we switched to the Listserv software and everyone had to resubscribe, so there are only 20 countries represented (whereas before there were more than twice as many): Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Finland, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA. -seth ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jul 1997 12:09:48 -0500 From: Gary Rees Subject: Re : Anna's Mehrer's question If you have Windows 95 it should be already installed, but if you don't, try going to microsoft's home page and try to find Activemovie in the downloads section. I just brightened the photo on the website so you can actually see the hat a little better. The SOMMS hats are black, baseball-style caps with the silver twisted fork and the red "Posting with my good eye closed" embroidered on the front and "somms@mit.edu" on the back.
