A rare few were printed on orange, blue and clear vi nyl. There is also a digital cassette released on March 22, 1994 that includes "She Likes Surprises". Interpret as you may. I would tend to suspect that the "gold" vinyl might actually be the orange one. I already have a copy, but I picked this one up anyway, thinking some lucky lister might want it. If any of you are interested, E-mail me. I'll give it to you for what it cost me: $10, plus shipping. Anyone interested let me know! Today is the birthday of former Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, who was born 33 years ago in San Diego, Calif. Born out of the bustling "Seattle scene," Soundgarden was one of the first bands to bridge heavy metal and the nascent grunge movement with their dirty, grinding guitars and Cornell's gravely howl. The group formed around guitarist Kim Thayil, assist Hiro Yamamoto and Sub Pop founder Bruce Pavitt, who moved from their Illinois upbringing to Olympia, Ore., where they intended to pursue art college. They moved to Seattle and began playing in local cover bands, eventually forming a quartet with Chris Cornell on vocals, naming themselves after a Seattle pipe sculpture. Scott Sundquist joined as their drummer in 1985 (to be replaced a year later by Matt Cameron), and the band released their debut EP Screaming Life in 1987 on the brand-new Sub Pop records. Fopp followed in 1988, with a full-length album on SST, Ultramega OK, later that same year. By then the record execs were clambering for a shot at recording the thermo-nuclear sound of Seattle's hardest outfit, and in 1989 Soundgarden recorded their breakthrough album Louder than Love with A&M. That album included two minor hits, "Loud Love" and the pro-environment "Hands All Over." Batmotorfinger followed, with bassist Ben Shepard taking over for Yamamoto (who left to return to college and another band, Truly). On that album the group experimented with quieter grooves, although the video for the raucous "Jesus Christ Pose" was banned from MTV because it depicted vegetables and women being crucified. Other hits included "Rusty Cage" and "Outshined." The band toured for more than two years supporting the album before returning in 1994 with Superunknown, a highly-acclaimed and popular album. It was also their first in the wake of the Nirvana explosion, and singles such as "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman" rocketed up the charts, as well as earning the group two Grammies. Soundgarden was back in 1996 with Down on the Upside, which sold relatively poorly despite the popularity of singles such as "Blow up the Outside World." In early 1997, the band announced that it was breaking up so its members could pursue other projects. Cornell had already collaborated with Pearl Jam members in Temple of the Dog and guested with Alice in Chains on their SAP EP, and released solo work on the Singles soundtrack. Other birthdays: Michael Anthony (Van Halen), Kim Carnes, John Lodge (Moody Blues), Carlos Santana, Paul Cook (Sex Pistols), Michael McNeil (Simple Minds) and Dig Wayne (JoBoxers). -- Beth Winegarner ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jul 1997 12:57:41 -0400 From: Alissa Corsi Subject: Birthday? huh? Well I for one would like Chris's birthday along with Ben's, Matt's, and Kim's to all be national holidays. Days when people don't have to go to work or school (when their birthdays fall on weekdays). Days when it is mandatory to listen to SG or any other song/band affiliated with Chris, Kim, Matt, or Ben all day long! :) Heck, just for fun, let's throw in Susan's birthday too! That way you can listen to several different bands on her birthday, but be sure to get a healthy dose of SG! :) I hope somebody fixes Chris his fave meal and he eats like a pig and gains 20 pounds! :) It certainly couldn't hurt him and of course he'll need to leave plenty of room for cake! :) Whatever he does on his birthday, I hope it's fun and he enjoys it!! ( oval shaped box, painted white with the spark-plug painted on top ....oh ya, its numbered ) I dont know that country of origin on it.. so I cant tell ya if its a import or not ( but for some reason I dont think that it is ) but keep this in mind....Just because something is expensive doesnt make it 'rare'. Is that worth it? Again ask yourself this.. is it worth it to me to spend 20 bucks on it? if the answer is yes, then get it. **I didnt have a proplem buying a Identity Crisis single for $40 bucks becase it was worth it to me to buy it. What SG songs could you see being used like a "theme song" at various events? For example: 1) I could see BUTOW used at a wedding. I've always seen this as a beautiful love song. 2) How about Rusty Cage at a graduation. 3) Rhinosaur for inspiration at boot camp. 4) Zero Chance at a funeral. I still think this song is a continuation of Chris dealing with his grief over Andy Wood's death. 5) Fresh Deadly Roses at a divorce hearing 6) Power Trip for election coverage That's all I can think of right now. Anyone else have any ideas? One more thing. About Ben's message defending Caryn...Seth once said it isn't contributions to the web page that count here on the list, but contributions to the list itself. Caryn has made many valuable contributions to both, but I also know someone who is saving a collection of "personal attacks" made by Caryn that for some reason never got HER kicked off the list.
