Yeah, caryn, didn't you know that the ultimate indication of how much an album "is" a certain person is *directly* proportional to who wrote the music and lyrics!? hey, "Chris A.", what exactly was your point in posting that? Were you trying to defend Cornell? No one was attacking him. And even in this defense, I fail to see how you disproved that without Jeff and Stone, TotD wouldn't have happened (oooh, a quadruple negative, even i'm having trouble following that!). I've always been a big fan of keeping it chill here on the list. Back in the day I myself may have broken out the flamethrower, but it didn't take long to realize that it was just not worth it. But I think some of you need to just lay off caryn. I know she can stick up for herself, but there's only so much one person needs to take. If you doubt her vitality to the list, just go do a search on the web page for "caryn" and start reading all that she's contributed. --BadBen Ben Timberlake The traffic lights btimlake@nwu.edu They turn blue btimlake@aol.com Tomorrow. So, I was browsing through "The Trouser Press Guide to '90s rock" or something like that, and they weren't so kind to Soundgarden. I can't remember exactly what rubbed me the wrong way, but they did totally trash Hater as self-indulgent. For a good laugh I suggest you go read the entry on Soundgarden... meanwhile, the writers kiss butt to bands like the Lemonheads. *Also in the music section at Barnes & Noble I was straightening the Blues/Jazz section today. Turns out one of the most prolific Jazz photographers was a Charles Peterson. Quite obviously not the same man as he of Seattle, but interesting. *Pop goes Soundgarden... Y'know that show on VH1: Pop-Up Video? I, personally think it's the greatest innovation on TV since music videos themselves. Anyway, I would *love* to see a Soundgarden video get popped. It would, of course, have to be BHS, just because they only really do very popular videos. So, anyway, if you're with me, email vh1@aol.com. If you don't get vh1 or refuse to watch it on principle, I'm sure someone would tape a copy and send it to you. (Hell, i emailed 120 minutes like 200 times for them to play 'Flower' even though I don't get eMpTyV) *Lyrics Local radio stations are playing the hell out of the DOTU singles. I heard BIMH on the radio five days straight (something of a blessing, since my tape player is broken... Oh the humanity!) So, I've reevaluated my opinion on the "missing verse" of BIMH. I don't think he sings "All the little pigs have god". I now think it goes "The moon is glued to a picture of heaven / and all the little pictures of god" -- the 'of' slurs into the end of 'pictures'. It works a little better metaphorically, methinks. Also, on the beginning of Bootcamp... I can't believe no one else hears this, the guy talking is obviously Ben and he's so *clearly* saying "Kim was the Walrus". Which is also supported by the open hand above Kim's head on the limited edition "Half"/"Motorcycle Loop" single. *And, finally, a question... Brought on by the idea that there are recordings to which only the band has access: do you guys think the band listen to their own albums? I can't really see them just popping in BMF just to listen to around the house. Any conjectures welcome. *No, wait... Also, a few people expressed interest in my extra copy of New Metal Crown. Email me if you're still interested and I'll mail it off this week (cost: $10.95 US, i'll cover shipping). I also noticed today that Chris Nickson's two other book credits are books on Melissa Etheridge and (doh, I forget the other one, but I think it's Tori Amos). Can you tell I work near the music books section at Barnes & Noble? *I woke up in a burning house... There was a July storm here today. I cranked "show me". making up for lost time. --BadBen p.s. I don't think I mentioned this before: My brother gave a speech at his High School graduation this May. On my recomendation, he quoted "The Day I Tried to Live". He began the speech with "I woke the same as any other day, y'know I should've stayed in bed." The closing quote was "I woke the same as any other day, except a voice was in my head. It said, 'seize the day.'" Carpe Diem, big high school grad theme. Anyway, he credited it only to "The lead singer of a band that recently broke up" to add a little mystery to it. A bunch of people recognized the quote, though, and congratulated him on it afterwards. It was a pretty cool speech, to boot. You either feel it or you don't. It's got nothing to do with lyrics, the sexiness of any particular bandmember, or your own personal sexual orientation. For me it's the interplay of particular rhythms with that lowdown kinda bluesy thing that sometimes happens in their music. Bass lines figure hugely into it. It's not determined by Chris's vocals, they're just the icing on the cake. It's that snakelike groove that just kinda moves into your hips. RE. I HAVE FAITH IN A FEW THINGS... about a few comments i made on Chris's solo album, y'know about seasons and all night thing, well i also said "with few instruments". i mean that those two songs have the kind of music played by only one person. i meant "i hope chris's album has music that he plays by himself, (like Duff Mckagan's did) as Chris can drum and play guitar. then it will be fun-ky. i hope he does't get some different musicians in to spice it up" from graham(not Stu) :) ps u no ur obssessed w/ SG when a) you spend time listening to SG songs on hi-speed dubbing, to hear Alvin and the Chipmunks do Soundgarden - check out Little Joe and Gun :) b) you make a new mail folder on your email system called ULTRAMEGA and compress the folders, so at the bottom of the screen it says: /C1/ProgramFiles/Netscape/Navigator/Mail/ULTRAMEGA OK bytes wasted (0%) it actually looks pretty cool ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 05:33:14 -0400 From: Giuliana Garbini Subject: Re: something different I got into Soundgarden when I was 13. I'm 16 now. The song that got me hooked was (sorry guys) BHS. I was listening to a lot of R&B and rap back then, but when I heard BHS, something just clicked. I bought SU and I was blown away. They opened up my eyes to another type of music that I never really acknowledge before. They got me into rock music in general. If it wasn't for SG, I wouldn't have probably started to listen to AIC, Screaming Trees, TOTD, Metallica, Jane's Addiction, Faith No More, and all the other bands that are dear to me. SG has gotten me through a lot of rough times. Whenever I get depressed, I listen to "Times Of Trouble" and the lyrics and music help me feel better. God I love their music. "The best bit was Chris Cornell lifting Mike McCready on his shoulders while he played Reach Down, which ended up on the TOTD album." Number 13 - The Rip magazine party at the Hollywood Palladium, Ocotber 6th 1991which featured Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains and an impromptu (?) get together of TOTD for two songs. As I looked through the endless stacks of somewhat alphabetized crap like "EMF" and "Duran Duran" I noticed Soundgarden. I thought hey, free copy of Louder than Love and Badmotorfinger. I later found Screaming Life/Fopp on tape in the basement. And it all kicked serious ass, so I went and found Ultramega and I was set. Ahh, how I miss stealing Cds from my brother, about half of my collection is really his. If only I had grabbed the Steve Vai. Ya know, "Fopp with me and i'll fopp with you" Hey, why don't the members of the band participate on this list? I mean, it would be a cool personal way for the guys to let us know that we the fans actually mean something to them. I'm on a Megadeth list and Dave Mustaine used to post all the time, hell, he even participated in the flame wars. He recently unsubscribed because he was bogged down with mail, but it was cool Rich-copyinganewthreadforsomereasonunknowntothemanthatishimself-Horner "I wield a ton of rage" Soundgarden, Metallica, Megadeth http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Stage/4984 /\ /*/ /*/ . /*/ /*\ \*\ /*.*\ \*\ \/ \*\ \*\ /\ \*\ \*'*/ \*\ \*/ /*/ ' /*/ /*/ /_/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 19:16:40 -0500 From: Mayor McCheese Subject: Re: BadBen's collected thoughts [long] On Wed, 16 Jul 1997, Ben Timberlake wrote: > Also, on the beginning of Bootcamp... Ok, Now I have two things to say about this part . . . 1) If Kim was the Walrus . . . who is the eggman? This was always one of my favorite Beatles songs. I have to go listen for this now Ben. What time in the track to you hear it? It's also funny since Lennon thought the Walrus was the goodguy . . . but after he recorded it found out the walrus was the bad guy . . . sounds like the (very summed up) plot of a good ole SG song. 2) WHAT LIMITED EDITION HALF/MOTERCYCLE LOOP SINGLE?!?!?!?!?!? Half is one (if not the) of my favorite SG songs . . . Any info on this (or the long version of Motercycle Loop) would be much appreciated . . . If you can get this . . . send me mail promptly . . . Or am I an idoit? ************************************************************************* *********************** Mayor McCheese ********************************** ************************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 22:01:06 +0000 From: John DiPanfilo Subject: Re: Chris Cornell That's right! Once upon a time, in a land far away... :o) If I remember correctly, I think it was the video of "Outshined" that first got me hooked. I was about 12 at the time the video cam out, and I'm ashamed to say it, but I really liked the video simply because of this amazing looking guy with this voice that I can't describe. Whenever songs from Soundgarden played on the radio, I would tape them. I never bought the album though. Until a few years later when I was 14 and saw the video for Black Hole SUn. I didn't recognize them at all!! I thought it was a totally different band then the one I listened to a few years back. I noticed my cousin had a shirt of theirs on and that he had the SUperUnknown album and BMF. I asked which one I should buy first and he said SuperUnknown. The second the tape started with "Let Me Drown" I was totally hooked! I knew this was a band that I could never get sick of. A few months later I bought BMF and I was totally shocked to hear "Outshined" and "Rusty Cage" on it. I started to flip out like 'Oh wow...this is the same band that I liked before!!" I bought all their albums, joined the list and I am still hooked. And it shows!! People who don't know my name just go "Hey...aren't you that Soundgarden freak??" To which I answer : "Yes and I'm damned proud of it!! :o) Toodles!! ~>Jentje "Show me the power child I'd like to say That I'm down on my knees today..." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 22:53:07 -0400 From: eliza Subject: Re: Chris Cornell my GOD!!!!!!! have you people ever heard of a PERSONAL life????? I hate to admit it, but I was one of those mtv freaks. Yeah, you know the kid who could actually sit in front of the t.v. eight hours a day during a beautiful summer day. Ok, so anyways, I was sittin there watching all the videos, and black hole sun came up. I was like this is wicked. I Like it! The band kinda freaked me out, but I still was curious and the next day I made my parents drive me to the record store to buy superunknown. I listened to that tape every single day for practically a year before I started to buy the other albums... A couple weeks later in august of '94, they were at the Nautica in Cleveland, and it sold out in like twenty minutes, so luckily, my friend had a boat and we just sailed down the waters of lake erie, positioning ourselves right behind the concert... It was soo cool cause I could hear them really clear and it was free! Another cool thing, is that at a garage sale, i found two VERY rare soundgarden posters.. each for a buck. :))))) Ok, and lastly, you know you are obsessed with soundgarden when you buy those glow in the dark stars and create the soundgarden "s" and the name on your ceiling with these nifty stars. :) - Laura ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 16 Jul 1997 to 17 Jul 1997 ************************************************
