Hmmmm... BTW i was reading this magazine article about SG (only reason i'd pay NZ$10+ for a crap mag filled with news about inferior bands:) and Chris said "If you ever want a laugh listen to it(Seasons) with headphones on, and you'll hear all sorts of wonderful things because i record in a closet. The microphone is in the same room with the machine so you can hear the machine running and turning on and off." (it means the Singles Soundtrack version as that recording was what he did at home) unfortunately, i can't hear a thing but maybe one of you will benefit from this more than i did. from graham:) ps you know your obsessed with Soundgarden when: 1) you notice that where you write your address when you send email it says Cc. Just got finished listening to Seasons. I don't know if I hear anything or not, but I do know whenever I make anything, silly little imperfections no one else notices seem to stick out. I dunno. Hiya, On the TV yesterday a commercial came on that once again is taking a great song and trying to sell a product with it. It got me to thinking, would a Soundgarden song ever be used in this capacity? Now don't start with the wailing and gnashing of teeth that SG would never sell out...I don't think they would either BUTT if they did(hey, it cost alot of money to feed all those rat dogs) what would the commercials be advertising for??? One thought I had was a quiet suburban deck by day in the first scene becomes at dusk full of people moshing and dancing to Drawing Flies as a strobe light flashes. As the camera pulls back the strobe light is a nationally advertised bug zapper! Or maybe Artis the pitchman for Oneida silverware with Spoonman playing behind his speel. Or the one that made me slightly sick to my stomach....the super model with flowing hair that she tosses to the strains of Outshined as the bottle of Revlon Outrageous shampoo appears!! Scary isn't it??? Or the one that I would enjoy. Kim and his famous walk(whatever you call that gait of his) up to the camera...Beer is hand...takes his famous concert ending gulp. mmmm mmm good! No words or music necessary. toni ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jul 1997 16:28:56 -0700 From: Raine Subject: Re: campfires & sg moments >As I can well tell you, the list is no place for flamin' & bashin' (and >posting unrelated stuff, I'm trying Geoff) and this ain't a flame or >bash, just my humble opinion. {snip} >If you were freaked out cause they drank & got stoned (there are a >lot of people who party on this planet - in case you didn't know) >You need to reread the post. "used my inspiration for a guillotine/fire a loaded mental cannon to the page"... my words are probably the most important things in the world to me, and to know that someone who's inspired me so much, who's written what i can only hope and dream of emulating, feels the same way as i do... such an amazing song for me. >*Fresh Tendrils: woo oooh, this is a good one. the whole sound of >the lyrics and the way they're sung and esp. when it yells "Shame! >Shame! The double pedal sounding thing and the snare/hi hat >sound like they are too close together. Well here's my 2 cents worth: You can hit and slide forward with a slight twist on the bass pedal which gives you a double hit - sounds easy? NOT!! It took me 2 years to get it down and I'm still frustrated sometimes. After you master that (get closer to Matt's level) you can move on to the triple! this would be basically hit, slide forward, slide forward again - doesn't sound so easy, but it can be done. I'm working my butt off now with this one! When you can do this you can play triples or sixteenths, or thirty second notes with just 1 hand 1 foot, leaving the other hand and foot free. Matt also uses his left foot for Hi Hat a lot. This lets his right arm do other stuff. I think (pretty sure) Matt uses a hit bounce technique. Seeing them at the Wrocklage in Lexington back in 1988 I got to stand literally beside Matt for most of the show (off the side of the stage) He didn't use a double then and I'm guessing that he hasn't changed (why would you if you were sooooo good!) Another good example of this stuff is Janes Addiction. Steven Perkins does all this stuff a lot, without double pedal!!! Thats how he plays those "jungle beats" like in "Pigs In Zen" with toms, snare, bass, hi-hat, & ride all at once!!! Well that's all I got to say about that. No, this thread isn't about how sexy chris is, or you'd see Shroom posts all over the place. the thread is about how some SG songs are just **damn** sexy for whatever reason. There's something very sexy about SG's music in almost every song. Matt Cameron even describe their music as a "slow, steady kinda sexy groove..." (not SIC by any mark, just what i remember). This is not about finding chris attractive at all, but his voice does do wonders for the sexuality of certian songs. like, where would Mailman be without his voice? and Pretty Noose? There are certian things he does to make the songs as sexy as they are. If it was Kim singing and he had that voice, the songs would still be sexy (i love you kim, you are so cute!) even though the mass public wouldn't be drooling all over him. there are plenty of SSS's out there... "outshined," for example, has one of the sexiest crunches in guitar world i've ever heard. mind riot ____ please mother mercy take me from this place... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SOUNDGARDEN 1984-1997 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 1997 13:34:36 -0400 From: demske Subject: drums yea, what you do is put the high hat and left double bass pedal really close and then make your foot diagonal and hit them both at the same time. I was browsing around some really kewl web sites and stumbled on SOundgarden articles.. so I read them and I printed them out for my scrapbook (and yes.. I am the obsessive person u've been talking about) and I thought some of them that Chris did was pretty kewl and funny and interesting and I wanted to share them with you all if u have a few minutes to read this.. Chris proudest achievement of his life so far: "Living to be 31 years old! When I was 15 I was pretty convinced that I wouldn't make it. I dunno why, i just thought something big was going to happen to me one way or another -- either I was going to die or my life was going to change dramatically somehow. It just happened to change dramatically." Does he believe in God? "No, because the interpretation of what God -- or a god -- is, I wouldn't have. I don't see some white, grey-haired old man sitting on a throne throwing lightning bolts at us when we least expect it." The most outrageous thing he's ever done while being in Soundgarden: "Hmmm... Whatever memory I have of it, I might have drank it away between then and now. What could it be? Hmmm... I'll have to stick with my first answer -- that whatever memory I have of it I've drank away." The last time he go so drunk he threw up: "It's been awhile. I'm not a big throw-up guy. I don't like it, so I try to not throw up regardless of how much I drink. I usually pass out and fall over first. But when we were in the studio for 'Superunknown' I was trying to quit smoking and I was chewing tobacco instead. The producer guy brought in this bottle of Scotch, and I hadn't eaten that day and I took a big pull on the Scotch, and I had tobacco in my mouth. It went down good, so I took another big swing. And then all of a sudden I was rushing to the bathroom and my whole head felt like it was going to explode and I was throwing up pure Scotch and tobacco. It was pretty awful, but me and Scotch are friends again now." Abortion - legal or illegal? "There's different types of abortion and there's different reasons for doing it. But if you look at it this way: in terms of overpopulation, from ghettos to the white under-class, it doesn't make any sense to me to have these militant religious sect try to ban abortion. I think if they really want to protect children and do some good they should look after the living." Has he ever committed a crime and if so what was it? "That's an easy answer: yes. But these are the sort of answers it's probably best not to elaborate on!" What music does he like to have sex to? "Real moody stuff." Has he ever been tested for an AIDS test? "Once, yeah. There's quite a few rock musicians who have quite a promiscuous lifestyle, but I'm not going in after every tour for a new AIDS test -- 'Well, have I got it this time?' (laughs)" Has he ever been threatened with a gun or at knife-point? "No, not really. I've been near people who have pulled guns. Not to threaten me, but to show me they have a gun. Like, 'Leave me alone, I have a gun!' But I was younger then. I saw someone get shot once, in the Bay Area, though." Strange hobbies? "Hmmm..... I collect wax! No, I don't, really. Ha, ha, beautiful gloves of different colored wax! No, not really. I talk to myself, but I guess most people do. And I'm sure whatever I'm saying to myself is quite interesting. What would Chris do if Pamela Anderson came backstage at one of his shoes and propositioned him? " I'd have her arrested, and I'd have my lawyer contact her lawyers, and I'd sue her for sexual harassment and I'd win. And it would be like a very big legal case. You always hear about sexism in rock, but I've never gone off and touched a woman when she didn't want me to. But many times on stage and off I've had girls come up and grab my crotch, and that's sexual harassment. So I'd take her to court and I'd sue her husband and Baywatch and everybody, because I'm American and that's what Americans do" Also.. Chris has had a lifelong addiction to speed. "I don't need any encouragement to speed up... ever since I was a kid I've been a little tightly wound, which is why I've never taken amphetamine. Even drinking too much coffee can make me start to stutter. And when I'm writing, I often get ahead of myself: I'll try to write the word 'fight', for example, and begin with the letter h. It's hard to spell when your mind's fast foward.... When I want to clear out my mind, I'll usually do driving late at night on roads where I know there are no police.. who only causes more traffic problems anyway. I've ridden my motorbike as fast as 140 miles an hour, but let me be clear: I don't have a death wish. I'm careful on the road, and I've never broken a bone in my body. I grew up in a neighborhood of Seattle that has lots of hills, so naturally I spent most of my childhood going down them at maximum speed. At six, I'd try to break the sound barrier on my little red wagon: by eleven, I'd graduated to a motocross bike. My friends and I used to tear down a nearby hill, jump over a gully, and then land right in front of the big pronged iron fence outside the cemetery. One day, my friends we all jumping better and higher that I was, so I decided the solution was more speed. I screamed down the hill, heading for the graveyard. In seconds, my friends' awe turned into fear. I calmly said to myself 'Fuck'. Luckily I landed in some sticker bushes in front of the fence. My full body sticker gashes were a lot easier to deal with than the permanent piercing those iron spikes had in the stone. When the band first started and we toured across the country in a van, I would always volunteer to drive because otherwise I'd get bored. My mission was to go as fast as I possible could without getting a ticket. With my natural antenna for speed traps, I never received a moving violation (still haven't), but I did get into fights with the rest of the band, who'd say things like 'It seems like you're driving outside of your ability.' or 'You drive like a freak.' Part of the fun of driving fast is discovering the edge of your ability, when you're almost going to crash. Her's a litmus test: If you smack into a pole then you were going too fast.... Not long ago, I was riding my kawasaki motorcycle on a sunny day. I'd taken the face shield off my helmet so I could get some air and was cruising along at 85 miles an hour when a giant bumblebee flew right into my helmet and started stinging my eye. It felt like somebody was sticking an ice pick in my head, but taking my hands off the handlebars to do something about it would definitely have been the wrong option. Trying to ignore the pain, I gradually slowed down and took the been out with one hand. Then I got off the freeway so I could pluck the huge stinger out of my eyelid. Two days later, my eye was swollen shut and we had to cancel some live shows, but at least I didn't become road pizza.... One of the best places to achieve liberation through speed is on the slopes. A few years ago I was in a snowboard shop with a pal when I ran into my friend Eddie Vedder. He asked if I was going to take up boarding. I said no. I didn't have the time. I was too busy writing songs. A month later I woke up on a Christmas morning and found that Santa had paid a visit: There on my front doorstep were two enormous boxes with Eddie's handwriting on them. He'd gotten me a full set of snowboarding gear... everything except the boots. Still, I didn't strap on the board that entire winter. My friends starting bugging me about it because I had all this brand new equipment that I wouldn't use and that I wouldn't loan to anybody. The following year I finally tried it and thought it was pretty cool. I went again a few weeks later with a friend: He broke his leg, but I was hooked. I ended up going twenty times that year and I still snowboard whenever I can. There's a slope about an hour and a half away from Seattle.. or 45 minutes when I'm behind the wheel." Some Chris Cornell Travel Facts - Chris hates travelling - Chris has a serious fear of flying and has to take prescription sedatives just to get on a plane.. "But then the first commercial flight I ever had was to New York: it took off from Seattle in bad weather and as soon as we got up we heard this huge explosion and the pilots came on and said it was 'static discharge'. Yeah, right! That means the plane got struck by lightning. The whole flight was storms all the way, and we had an abortive landing. So that totally freaked me out for a long time." -then there was the flight they had in a Puddlejumper.. "They're like small commuter planes that crash all the time. We were in bad weather in that, too. About halfway through the pilot comes on and says 'Apparently....' and then clicks off. We're sitting there for 20 minutes going 'Apparently what? The engines have broken? One of the wings has dropped off?' It turned out we were going to be a few minutes early. It's probably some pilot joke thing." -Chris Cornell moved himself out of Euroclass First Class section into the smoking carriage so he could have a few tabs on the journey. -Having lost #3 during the first two hands of poker he played, he won all his money back on the last game. - SOundgarden's singer admits that he looks like a 'Native American girl' on his passport photo. This is not good. -He would rather ride his custom 1.340cc Harley Davidson bike that sit on a train all day. More with Chris: Last time he travelled by public transport: "It would be about three years ago, when I was riding mountain bikes with my friend Eric.........." Last time he got really drunk: "The last night we mixed 'Down on the Upside'. We were up till six in the morning mixing songs, and I was too drunk to hear it. I was just about to start changing everything and everyone was saying it sounded good. I was think, 'Okay, let's have another beer then!'" Last time her went inside a church: "I just went into this little church in Hawaii that was the first missionaries' church over there..." Last good film he saw: "That'd be 'Leaving Las Vegas'...." Last time he danced in a club: " That would be on the Australian 'Big Day Out' tour. We went to bar and the highly effeminate Urge Overkill were being very critical of the fact that we were too macho to dance. Raine, you might not want to read this. :) just joking.... This is just another cool moment i just had involving sg music....just thought i'd share... Last night, i came home from work real late... so naturally, i turn on Jay Leno and have a good laugh... afterwards, i still felt that something was missing before i go had a good night of resting... you guessed it, i needed some soundgarden... so i drag out my stereo and start playin my Stolen Prayers cd with the headphones on... There I was sitting on my porch enjoying the hot weather and listening to Flutter Girl on repeat... I was only supposed to stay there for 15 minutes or so, but i fell asleep! Anyway, i woke up at 4h30AM, when the sun was comming up and just when Kim breaks into one of the best solos i have ever heard (near the end of FlutterGirl)... the setting just made it better to... some paperboy passed in front of the house lookin at me with that weird look... i'm sure he thought : "oh well, just another sg freak.."... now, every time i hear the solo, i just can't help but think of that moment... You know you're obsessed with sg when you pay 30$ more to buy an electric shaver that has blades inside that are shaped in a manner reminding you of the BMF sign (you know, the triangle with the blades)... I thought Marias' post was very cool... it was a good laugh... Later Marc ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 18:50:19 -0700 From: Fetal Bliss Subject: Re: Define "sexy SG song." My comment wasn't about Chris being sexy *physically* but why the emotions (that, yes, I get) that are evoked by his singing or by the music is being DEFINED as "sexy" on this thread. So, yes, I get what you mean, that's why I love Soundgarden's music and respect those men - and no other musicians like this - but "sexy" is not how I'd describe it. You should write more songs like that.' I just wanted to punch this guy. What a stupid thing to say. If I wrote more songs like that, who would care about that song? 'You should write more songs like that because I like it.' You should fuck off because I hate you. Probably why people would single out a particular song they like on this record is because it's the only song like that on the record. And if there were 15 songs like that on the record, it would be a lame-ass record. It would suck." (guitar player, june 94) trying to predict what his own record might sound like, while somewhat interesting, is pretty futile. I mean, give the man some credit. while he might have written and recorded songs like 'seasons' as solo efforts in the past, he also wrote songs like 'fourth of july' and 'gun'. just take as given that the record will contain nothing but strong, dynamic and moving songs; songs that will remind us what is special about music and what drew us all to soundgarden in the first place. the direction isn't an issue. ----------------------------------------------- in your real life, treat it like it's special in your real life, try to be more kind in your real life, think of those that love you in this real life, try to be less blind words by vernon reid ---------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 17:26:08 -0500 From: Geoff Subject: Re: geoff, this is the last you'll hear about it... For me, I was a young lad of 15, when I listened to really stupid music, and my friend Graham (from the list), literally shoved SG in my face every time we spoke, and having no real will of my own, gave in relatively easily. But the transformation was not complete, that is until we went to the concert in NZ in February, and I became addicted. So there you have it. Hope I didn't bore you too much, but it's just that some people on the list are getting way to arguementive, and it's time to grow up and actually talk about SG a bit more. Well that's my 2 cents.
