I have a tendency to sometimes be pretty closed off and not see people for long periods of time and not call anyone. it's actually, in a way, a hopeful song. especially the lines "one more time around/might get it," which is basically saying, "I tried today to understand and belong and get along with other people, and I failed, but I'll probably try again tomorrow." a lot of people misinterpreted that song as a suicide-note song. taking the word live too literally. 'the day I tried to live' means more like the day I actually tried to open up myself and experience everything that's going on around me as opposed to blowing it all off and hiding in a cave." speaking of drugs and gritty street life, I'm sure there are more than a couple of us who have one or two guns n' roses records hidden in our closets and may be interested in this snippet, taken from today's atn music news of the world -- slash said that he's auditioned big-name and unknown vocalists (for his new band), but few of today's rock bands interest him outside of L7, nine inch nails and soundgarden. on that note, slash added that chris cornell, singer for the now defunct soundgarden, has an open invitation to play with him. "I fucking think he's awesome," the guitarist said. "if he wanted to sing for a band outside of soundgarden I would play with him in a heartbeat." ----------------------------------------------- in your real life, treat it like it's special in your real life, try to be more kind in your real life, think of those that love you in this real life, try to be less blind words by vernon reid ---------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jul 1997 23:49:45 -0700 From: Caryn Rose Subject: totd redux i'm not trying to randomly plug the page, but if you haven't checked out the totd site, there is some seriously cool shit there, like video files of a totd reunion (including eddie) from the last date lolla 92 where they do 'reach down' and 'hunger strike'. http://ten.shocking.com/totd/ there's also a review of the off ramp show, the first and only real, full totd show. and during that show, it is visibly obvious how much chris is in awe of mike mc cready's playing, how instrumental he was to the whole totd sound. listen to stone gossard anchor any version of 'reach down' -- you think chris could have created that groove all by himself? with all due respect, i don't think so. that track is Classic Stone Gossard. chris may have written the notes, but stone makes them SWING, makes them come to life. the demo of that track is there for you to listen to: compare it to the album, and then the live version. you don't hear a difference? if stone and jeff weren't instrumental to the project, then why did chris ask them to join him? why didn't he just write the songs and put them away, or give them to soundgarden, or record them himself? no, i don't know his exact reasons either, but i don't think he asked them randomly. all the parties have been quoted as saying that the original intent was just to do a single or something, but when they got in the studio the thing just came to life and developed a life of its own. chris' idea? no question. just the "guy who sang the songs"? no one, NO ONE, ever maintained that. chris cornell's project entirely? i don't know how you can say that. and yes, thank you, i'm familiar with the credits on the album. and there's a LOT more to the history of totd than jeff ament's liner notes. they're just a starting point, as i found out (to my detriment, and the loss of many nights' sleep....) :D --caryn ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jul 1997 20:06:34 +1300 From: Stuart Appleby Subject: ty cobb single has anyone else heard the rhinosaur - the straw that broke the rhino's back remix? its on the ty cobb ep. i don't know if you get in in America. anyhoo its really cool. at the starrt its just bass and drums i think and his voice sounds real funky, staticky. and in the second verse, instead of the normal riff it has the "i play, im sick and tame" bit, then the "drawing the hordes" bit with the chorus riff. is really cool. oh yeah the cd has ty cobb, rhinosaur, big dumb sex and the rhinosaur remix. kims solos i really like the incessant mace ones, and tighter and tighter - the intro's better though and i think that nazi driver one sounds real cool too. and Like Suicide of course anyway didn't chris play the Little Joe solo at the start, he did on motorvision. and he plays the banjo bit on BIMH, and the start of Rusty Cage and didn't he play Mind Riot by himself. and i'm only guessing this, it's totally assumption, but did he play that bit on Like Suicide right before Kim's solo, y'know where he says I Feel For You over and over again. i really like that bit too. from graham:) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jul 1997 09:40:27 -0500 From: Opus Subject: DOTU B-sides The ONLY SG b-sides I'm missing at the present time are Spacejam and Bleed Together. I just wanted you all to know about this cd that Soundgarden is featured on (if you don't already know). It's called Launch and it is a bi-monthly entertainment cd-rom. Issue number 8 of this cd has Soundgarden on it and the stuff is extremely kewl! Soundgarden is in this room (actually it's Kim and Chris) and they sit there like statues until you are ready to hear and see the interview. Once you get to that room the music video for "Pretty Noose" starts to play. When it's over you can watch the interview. Kim sits to your left and Chris is at the right. Above Kim's head is the music video and above Chris' head is the topic for you to choose in which you can see the interview.. When you pick a topic, Chris and Kim will alternate turns in explaining their views and it's kewl because at first they are still and then they'll take turns and start moving and the video or multimedia is extremely great! It's worth the money. Also on the cd is tons and tons and tons of other stuff that'll surely interest you greatly. I bought this cd and a nearby record store for $7.99 and it was worth it. Go to the "Unoficial Soundgarden Web Page" and you can read and see more about it, in which you can go to Launch's web page and download clips from the interview and the transcript and you can order it from them also. Well, thanx for reading and think about it because it's a real good disc. She also knows I'll be buying a car soon and that a Miata is a strong possibility, so she says, "Bring a favorite cd so you can see how you like the stereo!" Well, I don't need to tell you what band... So, I pulled out SU and away we went. (Now, I don't know her exact age, but she's somewhere around 50, and one of my husband's colleagues. I'm just getting to know her.) So, we go out for a preliminary drive around and she says, "Let's put your cd on." So I did. Well, about halfway through Let Me Drown she says, "Who is this? I really like this!" So, I told her, and I told her a little about them, as she had never heard of them, and she started asking all sorts of cool questions about them. I had it on at a "polite" volume so we could talk, and she said, "I usually listen a lot louder than this." I said, "Yeah, so do I," so she cranked it up really loud, and she kept saying, "This is such a great cd. I love this music. Every one of these tracks is great!" Well, we turned it off for my lesson so we could hear the engine, but afterwards she had to run an errand, so we put the top down, she took the wheel again, and away we went, picking up where we had left off on the cd. Then there we were flying down the interstate at 80 mph blasting TDITTL and I lapsed into this seriously transcendent SG moment. It was heaven. After we got back to my house I thanked her and told her how much fun I had, especially on the interstate, and she said, "Yes, and the music was just perfect!!" She picked up the cd case and was really looking it over. It felt so good. I will have to continue her education. ;) Jen Grover ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jul 1997 01:13:35 -0500 From: NIKI FREER Subject: Re: Kim's Solos Rich wrote: >Yeah, 4th of July's solo sucks compared to Beyond >the Wheel because its short and not complicated. True, fast hard solos are damn cool because you're in awe of the speed (ie: Gun, Rhinosaur) but there is nothing that i think is cooler than a solo that not only amazes, but also connects and improves the music's emotional level. think of 4th of july with a fast solo... it ruins the song, IMO. but, with the solo is has, the song becomes an immortal of sorts. quality is always more profound than quanity. meaning in this case, that a solo with emotional empact but that is not the most difficult thing (Fell on black days) usually touches someone moreso than a solo that just rips along at warp speed. but that's just my opinion. = ) mind riot (who has posted like crazy lately! sorry if you're tired of me!) ____ little joe, run for the border leave your home, leave your mother and father... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SOUNDGARDEN 1984-1997 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jul 1997 13:16:05 -0700 From: Raine Subject: campfires & sg moments >still, i wonder if Chris is gonna put out "radio" stuff in the likes of >BHS, BUTOW, and BIMH... or is he gonna put out stuff with a big >sound... you know, riffs... well, you know, Soundgarden stuff chris writes songs for himself and no one else. he always has, and he always will. and should he release a solo album, it would be "chris stuff", not "soundgarden stuff". soundgarden are 4. >seriously, i was at my friends house yesterday night... there were >about 10 of us gathered around a campfire... glazing the stars... >some getting real drunk (... :) ....)... some gettin "you know what".... >you know, just your average everyday campfire... {snip} WOW!!! you got *fucked*! or perhaps you mean *stoned*. well, you certainly should be proud! and *drunk* at that! c'mon, let's all give him a hand! 3 cheers for marc! he's got a dick and some budweiser!!! Its also played mostly within a fairly small area of guitar fretboard. The really hard part is getting the wah right..... As for Kim's solos, I can't be the only one on the list who thinks that quite a few of them a flawed or repetitive or dull... And I'm not saying that a solo has to fast and furious; on the contrary these tend to be the least powerful [emotionally]. Most of my favourite Sg songs have no solo or have some sort of rhythm solo instead - these tend to better enhance the song. Half, Switch Opens, Head Down, Zero Chance, Applebite. As for the great solos, I think Kim really nailed the ones on BHS, Mailman, Pretty Noose, NTMF and that great bit on the last prechorus in Overfloater. ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 12 Jul 1997 to 13 Jul 1997 ************************************************
