Does it really matter why "Bob" buys Greatest Hits (if there ever even is one) or if he likes it enough to buy anything else? Does it really matter how many tapes, cd's, videos, boots, concerts attented any of us has? What matters is what the music, band, etc. means to each of us personally, ourselves. If we find someone else on the same wavelength GREAT! If we don't, so what? I mean, it's a bummer if we don't, but it won't change, or shouldn't change, our own perceptions. And what is a "true" fan? Is that like a "true" love? Does that mean a "true" fan doesn't listen to any other bands? Personally, I think it would be pretty amusing to see a bunch of trend-following dipshits go out and buy a Gr. Hits by SG under the guise of being *cool* and lining our guys' pockets with a few extra bucks in the process. Let's face it, it would still be impossible to put a "bad" song on it and maybe some modicum of taste would rub off (though probably not). btw: Chris is singing "shedding", and I also garden (apart from the *Sound* variety). Hair of any kind is rich in nitrogen, and while it takes a while to decompose, it is useful as fertilizer and such use is suggested in gardening articles I have read. Listen sommsters old and new, there is no point in argueing over stupid things like posts about who's a bigger fan than thou or why yr not a big fan for this reason or who's more "die-hard" than i. it's pointless, and it really has nothing much to do with Soundgarden besides the fact that they are(choke- were) a band and that's why we're all here. So anyways, anyone else agree that without the Soundgarden contribution to the "Basketball Diaries" soundtrack, it would really a worthless buy? I found it for $8 not too long ago and was excited about getting it. UGH major! it is the worst soundtrack i've ever heard. but then again, that's just me... More Greatest Hits Making a greatest hits CD is just pointless, because: 1. Bob, our soon-to-be-fan, should rather start listening to some of SG's music and find his personal favourites, instead of just be happy with what someone else (SG themselves, the fan, the ratings, sales, etc.) define as SG's best songs. Why should someone else pick the best SG songs for you? That's an individual thing! When I hear a song or hear about a new band, I wouldn't just buy the "greatest hits" collection. I would listen to some of their CDs and decide wether I like it or not. For instance, a friend of mine introduced me to Tool recently, and now I've bought their latest CD. I'll soon try to find some of their older music.... 2. How can someone pick out SG's best songs? There are more opinions about this than there are SG songs. I've read about this on the list, like "a greatest hits album would not be complete without song 1 and song 2 and song 3". People have their own favourites. Personally, I wouldn't be able to pick, say the 10 best SG songs. I think all of SG's songs are great, and I wouldn't be able to compare them like that. There are different songs for different moods and different meanings and so on... I also doubt that Chris, Kim, Ben and Matt easily could agree on their best songs. I can't say this for sure of course, but.... well... I doubt it. And this doesn't mean that we can't disagree with their choices? I hope you got my points by now.... I just think that it's impossible to pick songs that all SG fans agree are the best. I also think that people that just buy a greatest hits album don't get the big picture about SG's music. They would only experience a small part of twelve years of musical paradise!!! --- Eivind, the viking (Sorry for my bad english, but... "shedding" would be telling someone you hate you really hate them, telling your boss off instead of kissing up to him, telling the boyfriend you're sick of to go suck himself. what i think is most impressive about "outshined" is how it plays w/ irony & opposites the whole way thru but manages to retain it's meaning. >On the speculated and anticipated Cornell solo project, what would you >think of him performing covers of Buckley's unfinished work that would >have been his second album? A very familiar subject on our beloved list. Marsinay wrote: >so does that mean you can like a few songs and be a fan? that >definition leaves me feeling very uncomfortable. i still want to argue >that that's not possible. so where do we draw the line? at what >point -- after liking how >many albums or songs -- can someone be deemed a true fan? a fan of >the *band*, that is. I think it took alot of courage to write this, Marsinay, because there are quite a few "fans" on this list who get pretty bent out of shape when they think someone is questioning their loyalty. The term "fan" is derived from "fanatic", which is defined as "marked or moved by excessive enthusiasm and intense uncritical devotion" by Webster. Hardly sounds like someone who would only like a few songs. I see a fan as someone who not only likes at least *most* of the music, but who also is interested in the band itself and wants to own and learn everything they possibly can. But I also think thats a very hard thing to judge. I guess, however, that we can assume that anyone who sticks with this list for any length of time is a true fan. I can't imagine someone who's feelings were only lukewarm taking the time to keep reading the list. Then Mike Smith wrote: > when i first >wrote about my classification of a "die hard fan" i had a feeling it >would >bring the maryter sg fans out of the wood work to jump in the way of >my bullet of "fan questionability". and just on hate mail, ooopp's, i >mean email alone, i know there are plenty of you out there that fall >in to the "boooo-hooo" catergory. so in conclusion..... much like sg >lyrics, lets leave this matter up to interpretation.... I can also relate to what you're saying, Mike. Of course we need to leave it up to interpretation, but we also need to lighten up. If you're a "true fan" you know you are, so why get so upset and feel this desperate need to *prove* it to someone else. Everyone has a right to their own opinion. If you disagree, that's cool, but don't take it so personally. Kathie ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jun 1997 00:41:36 -0500 From: Kathie Opon Subject: Videos I've been reading with interest the thread on the pros and cons of music videos. My own very first exposure to SG (hmm, exposure..., never mind) was through a video, and the experience was quite surreal. It was back in '89 or '90 and I had fallen asleep on the couch watching Headbanger's Ball. Somewhere around 3am I was awakened by this amazing sound, the beginning of Loud Love, and I sat absolutely transfixed throughout the entire video. I hadn't seen anything as good as this "new" band in ages. And I'll never forget that moment. Now, Loud Love isn't their best video, but since it was my *first time* it will always be special to me. And actually seeing the band in addition to hearing them added to it. Chris seemed truly majestic. My biggest objection to music videos is really an objection to MTV as the self-proclaimed star-maker. Like their current big push of the Spice Girls (gag) and Jenny McCarthy. Who the hell gave them the power to decide what will be popular? Anyway, it bugs the shit out of me to go to a concert and have the whole MTV crowd dancing in the aisles, whooing and such, during such MTV classics as Outshined or BHS, and then sitting like, duh, during every song that was never a video (a huge number as far as Soundgarden is concerned). It just irks me to try listening to a great song while some jerk stands there looking around, chatting and acting stupid until the next MTV song comes, at which time he or she starts acting even more stupid because their very over-enthusiasm tells me that the only thing they know about SG is what they've seen on MTV. Sorry for ranting, but that drives me nuts. There are probably more classifications within these but I think there ok themselves.
