Examples: Megadeth, Set the World Afire. Sheet says "it's 1989" Dave sings "it's 1999" Nine Inch Nails, Closer. Sheet say "I've got no soul to tell" Trent sings "soul to sell" There are many more. I would swear that Chris sings "shitting" in Outshined. I asked my mother the gardener and she said that dog hair, by no means, makes grass greener. I don't completely disagree with the hypothesis outlined below but, there is another possible conclusion. Bob buys Greatest Hits album--loves it--figures that this is THE best of SG and therefore figures that everything else isn't worth buying. Bob is now one of those fans we all hate. The fan who has developed a "Top 40" view of a band. If SG has to release another album to fulfill a contract, I'd much rather see them release some unfinished stuff, or some out-takes a-la The Beatles Anthology. Author: Raine at dbnaccip Date: 6/24/97 12:17 PM >I'm puzzled as to why some of you are so upset by the idea of a >'Greatest Hits' or 'Best Of' or whatever... there's a man, say his name's Bob, driving home from work one day. Bob's pissed at his job, pissed at his life, going thru a midlife crisis. the radio station that he normally listens to isn't coming in. so he changes the dial and decides to put the top 40 or rock station or something on. he's stuck in a traffic jam, bored, frustrated, sick of everything. BHS comes on. at first he doesn't pay much attention, but then it begins to catch his interest, and he finds himself humming all the way home. and then a few months later, he hears about a Sg best of album, remembers BHS, and figures it might be worth buying. listening to it that night he's completely taken w/ every song, and a new Sg fan is born. and this one small change in Bob's life prompts a series of other changes, ultimately leading Bob down a completely different path. don't ask me where i came up w/ this, but my point is- why should any1 be upset, or ashamed, that their favorite band would release a best of compilation? how could any1 possibly consider that "selling out"? i see absolutely nothing wrong w/ it. and yes, i know nothing's been confirmed, this is purely hypothetical. >didn't Chris make up "Superunknown" as one word? i think i remember him saying somewhere that around the time they were making the album, he was watching tv and saw something that he thought said "superunknown", but on second glance realized it wasn't, hence the album/song title. that made me feel a whole lot better- i sometimes do that too. :) >Cheapening of a song usually occurs when the director/record >company either don't understand, are rushed to release a single or >just don't give a shit. well, no matter how disappointing the vid is, it shouldn't affect the song. they *are* 2 completely different works. >in the case of BHS where the song becomes a "theme tune" to the >video the video gives something more to it they're both outstanding... and you can take the vid out of the song, but ya can't take the song out of the vid. >do you not think of the vid when you hear the song? nah, very rarely... sometimes i think of summer '94 and what a fabulous time it was, or how practically every night i'd call the local station and bug them to play it, and after a while they started to recognize me & would call me the "soundgarden girl". :-) mostly i think of what the song means to me personally, all the different ways that i interpret it- interpretations that i formed in my own mind before i ever saw the video. don't get me wrong- i love the vid, it's arguably the best ever made. i appreciate Sg's vids very much, all i'm saying is, their songs can stand on their own. >Well, I think that almost anyone could have done a better job on >the video for blow up the outside world actually, this is one of my favorites... the script was perfect. if only the effects & the set had been better... the budget was way too small. >BTW, I think the mission the band was on in BIMH is to sell >albums. oh, hardee har har... Rich, you wouldn't be making fun of me, now would you??? :-> really tho, you don't see any artistic value in their vids? i was going to write more about that today, but i guess i'll wait till tomorrow. this is already like 10 pages long. :-) ciao... ~Lorraine Long time coming... many served the few ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 12:58:50 -0500 From: Richard E Horner Subject: Re: dogshit Fetal Bliss has it people. This DOES have quite a lot of SG content, don't worry First of all, I'd just like to say one thing: you aren't going to believe what I did.. I went on vacation (i'll get to that later), and I sent a command to stop my mail. (i would be gone for a week) Anyways, i screwed it up. I had 500000 posts when i came, back, damn me.. anyways. I went up through washington DC (i live in fl.), up to New York, over to Cleveland for the rock and roll hall of fame. I became obsessed w/ Rusty Cage and Searching With My Good Eye Closed, on the trip.... The Mts. were beautiful, and New York kicked ass, i would loive to live there (Brooklyn or Manhattan.) We chad to pass through NJ, and I hated it. Sorry, Skye. :) Of course, i can't say anything. It was in Newark, and we got caught in rush hour traffic on a truckers route, in between factories and stuff..... ugh. Anyways, on to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Aah. They had this Psychedelic Era thing going on... ok. They had all the great Seattle bands in one section. :) Nirvana, Pearl Jam,Alice in Chains, Malfunkshun (i think), Green River, Mother Love Bone, SOUNDGARDEN. They had Mike McCreadys smashed guitar, Chris Cornell's Les Paul, a picture of Chris when he was like, 7,10? Posters advertising bands like sg and mlb, albums of Temple of the Dog, Green River, Badmotorfinger, Nothing to say and Hunted down on blue Vinyl, they had a video above, "What is Grunge?", that showed live footage of all the bands at a concert... Live size wax dummy of Sean Kinney from AiC,( at first glance, i swear, i thought it was Chris. It looked so much like him, long curly black hair, bare-chest, black shorts..) had the sudden urge to throw myself down on the floor and bow in holy worship. (hmm, maybe this could go in the "Sg moments" section...) I bought New Metal Crown, and Guitar shaped markers. :) They're Gibsons. Gibson Les Paul's, Gibson Nighthawks... Has anyone else ever been to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Seth, good luck in Europe, before i forget... Oh, and one more thing. It's my Birthday. All together now, Haaappy Biirthdaaay tooo meee.... Sure you have those people who have the money and the time to maybe drive 500 miles to see a SG show, or take the time to hunt down bootlegs and other hard to find stuff, but you also have those people (like myself) who don't have the opportunity (Lolla decided to go to Kansas City in instead of St. Louis last year) to go to SG shows or buy bootlegs, but we still love listening to SG none the less. To repeat a point, you really can't define a fan by levels. Oh, and about Rich's speakers, yeah, they are nice, whenever we need to combat the noise of the annoy kids next door playing with their $20 karoke (sp?) machine we can just turn up the speakers another notch and effectively drown out all noise with some SG. ;) Larry ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 14:28:07 -0700 From: RoseeMisst Subject: The "Launch" topic comes back to haunt you all...heh heh Rebekah posted: >Well, after trying all day to get into Launch's website, I have finally >succeeded! I dunno, I guess if you buy the band's album not just because it has the top 40 song on it, but because you actually like the band and the album, and also if the band comes to play a concert, you go because you're thinking 'this would be a great show', not just because 'ooh, time to do the poser thing and go the Phish show' :P Anyway, I'd say you could be designated a fan if you like the band and the music for the music, not just the fact that they have a video with half naked women and have a top 40 single. Hey, I finally got around to buying Jeff Buckley's Grace, and I must admit, it is outstanding! I'll have to go back and pick up some of those boots... Anyway, since this is a SOUNDGARDEN list... On the speculated and anticipated Cornell solo project, what would you think of him performing covers of Buckley's unfinished work that would have been his second album? Obviously, Chris has much respect for him (see the Edgewise feature), and though Jeff was a unique talent (like Andy Wood was), I think Chris could do a DECENT tribute. I'd take things from a different slant. Rather than looking at the music in the collection, look at the person themselves. If a person has an inclination to learn more about Soundgarden themselves, beside the music itself, I'd start to think about calling them a fan. If a person didn't know that Soundgarden had broken up, with the sole exception of a hermit living a long way away from civilisation who couldn't know better, I couldn't care if they had the entire Soundgarden collection - I'd be hard pressed to call them a fan of Soundgarden. A fan of Soundgarden's music, indeed - but not of Soundgarden. As an example, I have four Metallica albums in my collection. I wouldn't regard myself as a Metallica fan - I love the music (ie. Metallica music fan), but I wouldn't recognise Lars Urlich if he walked by me in the street... This is my definition of a fan - it stops those people following trends from being regarded as fans because they buy a single album! Then again, those that buy the album because of genuine curiosity and who start learning about Soundgarden are fans. I stress this because when I joined SOMMS, not too long after its original inception, I only had Superunknown. Fan? Hell yeah. True fan? Well, I'm not here to debate that one. There are people on this list that have forgotten more about Soundgarden then I'll ever know... However, the blanket disclaimer goes that this is strictly my opinion, and I certainly don't regard it as the only opinion. I'd like to hear from others about this too! Jackhammer. PS: Regarding favourite vids. I must admit I'm a big lover of Rusty Cage and Jesus Christ Pose videos, but I find I'm hard to pushed to separate my love for the songs from the videos themselves. My all time favourite Soundgarden video would be Black Hole Sun. Something about that fast scrolling dark cloud in the shots of the band that does it to me every time...and now every time I see low level cloud whizzing by in the skies, I think of the Black Hole Sun video... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 20:45:31 -0700 From: Rachel Thompson Subject: SG PICS While surfing the net I came across a cool page.
