(for the record, i happen to enjoy bootlegs, just trying to make a point) well, damn me, i always thought i was a pretty devoted fan, but i can't, i just CAN'T watch bad quality video recordings of their shows there, now you all know...i think i'm gonna have to un-sub now, i'm not worthy. rita ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Jun 1997 10:44:58 GMT From: Sabrina Knauf Subject: Who's the bigger fan?? Someone wrote: > if you dont > love the music enough to buy boots and put up with the "not studio sound > quality" then mabey your not on the same level as the rest of us, im not > saying thats bad, its just not on the "die hard fan level". This is truly fascinating, 'cos I had no idea there were certain levels of being a fan. If I had known we were being ranked, why darn it, I would have gone out, and bought myself all the boots I could find. Then I would be up there on the top level, along with you. Buying boots doesn't make you a bigger or better fan, and saying that those who "love the music enough to buy boots" aren't on the same "level" is beyond bull. I know plenty of "die hard fans" who have neither the money, nor the oppurtunity to buy/receive boots, yet I wouldn't dare put them on a lower "level". I also know fans, who are opposed to boots 'cos the money doesn't go to the band. And is it so hard to believe that there are people out there... yes, real die hard Soundgarden fans, who *don't* like live recordings? Who may be irritated with the crowd noise or the less than perfect sound quality? If what you say is true, then there are plenty of people on this list who aren't on that same level. Maybe you should start a SG mailing list, for the "die hard fans"... Badmotorfinger came in number 48 with a picture of longhaired Chris.. Dripping with power, passion and precision, the music of Soundgarden burst fully onto the national scene with chart-topping success of their 1992 release. Badmotorfinger, Chris Cornell's gut-wrenching vocals, and the band's "heavy alternative" style garnered acclaim from both fans and media. When i say "die hard fan level" im not SAYING THAT ONE LEVEL IS ABOVE OR BELOW ANY OTHER LEVEL OF BEING A FAN, IN TERMS OF BETTER OR WORSE. if you only have one commercial released album or you have every boot since the begining "YOU ARE ALL EQUAL" in the sence that you are a "fan." In MY OPINION there are just different levels of liking the music. as per my classification a "die hard fan" is one that buys all the boots and associated items they can get there hands on. when i say this i dont take in to concideration everyones economic level or music taste. Remember the crappy Rolling Stone article about the end of Soundgarden? The current Rolling Stone has two letters to the editor about the article. Perhaps the Spice Girls on the cover has prevented many of you from opening it ;-) Anyway, here they are--typed up without permission: "What Soundgarden deserved for their Rolling Stone obituary was not your negative, faultfinding crap about 'disappointing record sales' (I'd say selling 2.3 million records is pretty fantastic) and 'turbulent band relations' ['Soundgarden Split,' RS 761]. What they deserved was praise and thanks for 12 great years of wonderful music, including their last album, which I have enjoyed very much." Mark O'Hara "Upon reading your recent coverage of Soundgarden's breakup, in which I was quoted, I was struck by how incomplete the article was, both in regard to the significance of Soundgarden's accomplishments and to the hopes and aspirations that we have for all the members of the band. Soundgarden brought uncompromising intelligence and vision to a historic and burgeoning scene. I have no doubt that if they had chosen to stay together, they would have continued to develop their already substantial audience, but instead they chose to part in a characteristically dignified manner. While they were together, each member of Soundgarden played a complete and essential role in the band's success. Now that they're apart, their individual musical gifts will find expression in new and exciting ways. I, for one, can't wait." Albert Cafaro Chairman and CEO, A & M Records Hollywood, Calif. First they hit you with an image from the front of the Room A Thousand Years Wide/HIV Baby 7" and then they only offer the SL/Fopp CD and the "very limited edition Down on the Upside Gatefold Double LP." I assume this is the black vinyl version, so I wouldn't exactly call it "rare." It wouldn't be completely out of the question to come across an original sealed copy of UMOK or Flower, but it just so happens that SST, in an effort to revive weak sales figures, started reissuing their back catalog on colored vinyl a few years ago. I was, however, a little disappointed with other aspects of the magazine. I know I'm horribly biased, but we all know that matt is a *huge* fan of tony's, which sort of begs the question: why didn't the publication contact matt for some input? they made use of the words and thoughts of other celebrated drummers on tony's legacy, so why not matt's? or do you have to be old and grizzled like ginger baker to have anything worthwhile to contribute? moreover, why didn't they include matt in their top fifty drummers of all-time article? I don't want to play favourites, but matt is at least as good as some of the artists they listed. surely they could have squeezed him in there somewhere. I mean, if you can find room for herb alexander (no disrespect intended), there must be room for matt cameron. To be specific, i noticed that it doesn't change what i feel, but that it really enhanced what i felt at the time... simple examples : let's say you come home from work and that your boss spent the whole damn day thankin you for what you do and gave you not one, but 2 raises (oooohhhh...how unlikely)... then you get home with a fat-ass smile on your face thinkin this is the best day of your life... then, bein a soundgarden fan, you crank up Spoonman ( or Flower, or Gun...)... i know what would happen to me... i'd be like 10 times happier... On the other hand, lets say you got back from work and that you see that one of your close friend died, chances are that if you crank 4th of July, add a couple of Molson Canadians, you'll be feelin a lot more fucked than you originally did... oh, one more thing, if i listen to some up-tempo soundgarden when i'm down, it doesn't do jack to help me out... anyway, that's the way it is for me... :) don't bash (just a waste of bandwith) me for writin about this, cause i'm sure i'm not the only one feelin this way.... man, i've written one too many lab reports in my young life....sigh...... :) later! Marc by the way, the grass is always greener where the dogs are SHEDDING....and where the dogs are shitting... come check out my lawn if some don't believe it... man, i could have SWORN that chris was signin shittin on OUtshined.... actually, i believed for the first 2 months i owned BMF...silly me... :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jun 1997 22:10:06 +0000 From: Stella Rogers Subject: *smile* Hey all... I was reading thru some old Rolling Stone mags that I have. One of them, dated Jan 27, 1994 (Nirvana on the cover) had a review of Superunknown. Anyways, Chris is talking about the changes of their music from BMF to SU. The last sentence put a smile on my face. Here's the whole quote: "I think we'd be changing this way anyway," says Cornell. "You might really love an album, but you don't want to listen to it for the rest of your life. You have to put it away for a while. At least until our reunion tour." stellar ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 01:09:58 -0700 From: McMahon Potvin Subject: another cool sg moment damn, i'm postin more than Hakeem Olajuwon on a good night.... anyway, here's a cool sg moment i thought i'd share... I live in a small town, so sg is not known very well here... we have this little Alternative bar downtown called the Subway (can hold 100 people, dancefloor can hold 20 "light moshin" people and 25 standin people)... anyway, they always play mainstream alternative...and these days it's always some NIN, Marylin Manson or some other techo-industrial-rave-whatever-synthetic .... so the other day i was havin some molsons...then i got mad and i felt the urge to hear and play some air-guitar to some sg (can anyone relate?) while throwin myself around.... so i went over to the dj, told him it was my birthday (for the 2nd time since 5 months...????....guess he was drunk too..or maybe it wasn't the same dj...man.....) and asked for some old sg as a gift... well, like the first time i tried, he agreed!... but he played Superunknown, which was a song i wasn't very fond of... i had asked for some Room a Thousand Years wide, but i guess that wasn't mainstream for him anymore...it sucks (not the song)...anyway, i just got into Superunknown like i never had before... it was cool... when he played the song, the 20 people that were already on the dancefloor kinda stopped, looked confused, and most of them thought it would be a good time to go and take a piss or somethin... i thought that was a cool way to get rid of bush fans :).... anyway, me and the other 3 remaining really got into the song... it was a pretty undescribable feelin... the kind of feelin only Justin could explain right :)......i'll stop here, cause i'm a little tired+molson affected + i know i'm pissin a lot of you off rigth now....sorry!! hehehe... :) later sommsters!!! btw, The TEA PARTYs' new album kicks some monster ass.....check it out... Marc. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 00:22:01 -0500 From: Orin Subject: Rusty Cage Well, I was channel flipping and happened to stop on MTV cause they were actually showing videos, and they were playing Johnny Cash's cover of Rusty Cage. Wasn't that bad, but was more of a country twist to the song. If you get a chance to see it I suggest you take the opportunity, it's pretty funny when you consider some old wrinkled guy with a southern accident singing 'hits like a phillips head into my brain'.
