Firstly, I believe the band still owe A&M a record to honour their contract. If they really *hate* the idea of a Greatest Hits they could always buy their way out of the contract instead. And from Chris' point of view it would lay the groundwork for his solo career (amazingly enough, not everyone in the world is aware of Chris or Soundgarden! :-) They've never been Fugazi, y'know? The guys always said they wanted to be a successful band, to earn their living as musicians. Although they have always been keen to keep a control of their own destiny, they are very pragmatic as far as understanding that the music business *is* a business and that sometimes you have to compromise (after muttering in their beards first :-). And they seem to have been pretty happy on the whole with the way A&M dealt with them. Hell, they even complained that the label underpromoted Louder Than Love! Just my humble opinion. Max plays the JCP vid too, though i don't know 'bout CRY, Dog T.v but i guessing they do/would if they have/could-get the vid <> ahhh, a Music video can be one of [at least] 4 - 5 things, a commercial [like Korn's "No Place to Hide"vid], a short film [Metallica's "Hero of the Day" is more succesful as a short film] , a skit/take off/humorus entertainment [ the "Fooze" vid "Big Me"] , a work of socialist/surrealist art unto itself [Tool's vid's for the Undertow and aenima singles], some conglomerate of these [and other] film /television /art concepts. Cheapening of a song usually occurs when the director/record company either don't understand, are rushed for release of a single, or just don't give a shit. Sometimes the choice of single is bad or the video doesn't turn out as planned and fails to convey the intended idea's/images [no doubt's "Spiderwebs"]. I personally don't find that the videos for Soundgardens music cheapen in any avoidable manner and in the case of Black Hole Sun where the song becomes a "theme tune" to the video , well Chris wrote it in 15 min [or so he has said] and the video gives something more to it [do you not think of the vid when you hear the song?,where otherwise it would just be a catchy tune?] MY FAV SG VIDS currently it would have to be "The Day i Tried to Live" because of all reasons already mentioned, the angles and lighting [lack of those evil devices hot enough to melt flesh] and the fact the band look human in it [Chris doesn't look like hes made of some kind of plastic] then probably "Hands all over" cos i dig the cheese , but mostly cos it reminds me of someone i used to know, Black Hole Sun is one of the "Best" mvids of all time because of the script ,attention to detail and the production values, and "guru's of video music" tend to agree, my fav shots[/angles/lighting] would have to be, 1. Loud Love: the bit at the begining [shot 3 i think] where the searchlight [or similar] moves across the frame where Chris is crouching and sweeps back across as he gets up, [it's a moment of genius and infamy ] 2. Black Hole Sun: where the camera zooms/sweeps over the electric candle stick into the situation of the guy combing his hair with a switchblade and the lady in the bath with the doberman 3. My Wave: Ben spinning round ,and then the other way round [the end is cool too] 4. The Day i tried to Live: The lighting of the ciggarette bit [and pretty much the rest of the vid too, the shadows rule] 5. Rusty Cage: there's this bit where the camera spins round the inside of the/a shed and a chain is swinging back and forth [and the bit where the truck drives thru the shed] 6. Blow up the Outside world: close-up where Chris looks like a goldfish [damn ,it always cracks me up] 7.Pretty Noose: when Ben changes gear [hint of aggression here, gotta say Kozic rules too = ] 8. Hands all over: there's this bit where Chris, Jason and Kim [i think its all 3 of them?] all jump up at the same time, so they're all in the air for a couple of frames [if you pause it there ,it looks real cool] 9. Jesus Christ Pose: the bit where Matt is letting the sand run thru his fingers [the bit at the end where they all walk back wards is cool, the editing fur the whole vid musta been real tedious so many cuts and such a long song on linear editing equipment!] 10.BiMH/It's a go[Shihad]: the way Shihad do the thing when the band walk's over the fence cos the lighting is moodier in the Shihad vid [Wellington weather?] Note: the motion lighting in shot 1 has been greatly imployed in Filter's Last vid "Jurassitol" [from the crow soundtrack], very nice vid. Gimmick/shot 4 was "ripped off" in a vid by [the late] Tupac, 'cept he used a cigar. shot 5 comment - other vids have trucks driving thru sheds, the latest on i've seen was a song by the NZ band "Shaft" taken from multiple angles just like the Rusty Cage vid , 'cept i believe the shed only had 2 sides. I agree with UKDeb on this. I don't think it is necessarily a sell out. I would like to see some unreleased stuff for those of us that own "everything" they've ever made. That way the casual fan and the hard core fan can both get something. I think A&M or Soundgarden should ask us...the list!!! We are a good cross section of fans and I think we would provide a clear picture of what A&M could give to the fans that have supported Soundgarden all these years. After watching Hype! for the millionth time, two things came to mind. First, is it just me or does Susan Silver bear a striking resemblence to Meredith Brooks? Second, Silver's personality seems to be incredibly similar to Cornell; her mannerisms, the slow and thought out way she talks. Silver, like Cornell, is someone I would love to sit down and talk to to for an afternoon. They make such a fascinating couple. Also, everyone is talking about this greatest hits album. I haven't seen anyone come here and dispute it which is weird. I haven't heard anyting about it, and nothing has come forth from A&M so until that moment occurs, I am assuming this is a rumor. A greatest hits album would be so cheesy and unSoundgarden-like. I wouldn't be surprised if SG released another album full of b-sides and redone songs, and I'd just expect to be named something well..SG like. Not just 'Soundgarden's Greatest Hits'. As for taking photographs and scanning them onto shirts, I think it would be rather expensive, since your not mass producing them. Prolly around $30 per shirt. (we all know bush sucks when it comes to actually playing more than 3 chords) I know I was idly watching TV the other day and MTV was showing footage of RockFest, and my god it looked bad, and I can sympathize with you. I really feel bad that you had to sit through wallflowers, I hope you were too drunk to notice them playing their watered down crap that MTV calls music (you should have Rich tell you his theory about how the more music sucks the more MTV plays it). Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It's Club Lingerie '88!!!! I just finished watching it and I am speechless. That is the best concert video bootleg I own! It's fabulous! I've heard the performance of Fopp from this show mentioned more than once because of Chris's demonstration of the fopp. I guess that's what he's doing. :) He's jumping up and down and turning around and I supposed that's close enough. However his behavior through the entire song is quite entertaining. :) I believe it's during Power Trip that the camera gets a close up of Chris and is it just me or did he look EXACTLY like a girl in that shot? The way he's touching himself and all? Like he's looking in a full length mirror and trying to look thinner. :) He looked very feminine there. Kim looked about the same except he had more hair. :) He was in his usual guitar playing frenzy. Hiro is weird and shorter than he looks in his pictures. He acted so weird while singing Circle of Power. Matt pretty much looked the same too except he was bonier. It always amazes me how much some people can change through the years, but another person who goes through those years with him, stays the same. You know? There is one song they played that I don't think you can fully appreciate until you here it live. It's He Didn't. I don't think the album version of it is something to write home to mother about, but hearing it done live just changes everything! It's one of those songs that's better live. On Steven's page, there's some thoughts about the show from a sommster (I guess) and he says that the audience is "very unenthusiastic." I think that's an understatement. I don't think the crowd liked SG at all! There was one person that seemed to get into them, but that was it. Like when they finished the first song, you can hear clapping from what sounds to be about 6 people. Right before SG performed the last song, Nothing to Say, Chris was talking to the crowd and thanking them for coming out. He was telling them to check out these other bands (or something, I'm not really sure and you're fixing to find out why) and the crowd was talking the whole time he was talking. They weren't even paying attention. He could have told them the club was on fire and they would have just burned alive. If I said somewhat upset, it's because I am. Everyone has their right to not like a band, but if those people didn't like the band playing there, then they could have gone somewhere else! None of those people had to be there. SG were troopers though and they appeared to be enjoying themselves and getting into the music. SG rocked, the audience sucked. :) (Author's note: I don't have another VCR so I can't copy it.) Sg showed up to be in it, and that was all. and the director is just another person like us, someone who hears a song and forms a vision. the only difference is, they're in a position where they get to show their vision to the world (well, everyone w/ cable, anyway). and then sometimes the artist collaborates w/ the director... but even so, the video is still just one other interpretation, not necessarily what the song means to the artist, or what it meant to them at the time they wrote it. >Well, as for my favorite SG video, I've seen the BHS video off the >cd+, and I thought that just kicked ass, they should have released >that version to show on MTV love the song, love the video, always will. >I don't think that videos cheapen songs at all. i don't either. though vids today are, for the most part, boring, nondescript & pointless, every once in a blue moon there is something worth watching, every once in a while you do see art among all the trash. and when you do, i think it's something to be appreciated. all Sg's vids have been very well done, some of them have been really wonderful, imo. but i *hate* MTV with a passion- what i hate most is the fact that once they have an artist's vid, they can do whatever they want w/ their song. it just makes me sick. >The only thing I don't like about videos is when the whole video is >of the band. You should only see the band long enough to check >out their equipment. well i loved FOBD and the Kaiser Keller's Cellar version of PN- sometimes quiet elegance is the best way to go. this has happened to me a lot- i'll see a vid & think "damnit! i could've done that *so* much better!!!" has this ever happened to any1 else? if you could've directed a Sg vid, what would it have been & what would you have done differently? ciao... ~Lorraine Long time coming... many served the few ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jun 1997 22:37:00 -0500 From: Orin Subject: SG Vids Well, I think that almost anyone could have done a better job on the video for blow up the outside world, but with that as the exception I think the majority of the videos were very good. Some of my favorite ones well, for 'The Day I Tried To Live', don't you wish more bands would like their guitars on fire while they're playing? ;) And Fell on Black Days has that great purplish light while they are playing..but otherwise they all are good in one way or another. But anyway, off topic, is it just me or does DoTU seem to be alot more mellow/relaxed than the others? Like I posted earlier, my favorite Soundgarden videos are My Wave and TDITTL cause there just fun to watch. THE BLUE GUY RULES! I'm gonna have to say that I don't like the FOBD vid though. The video just gets boring, but I think it was really Kim's shirt that turned me off. I always look for Kim in the vids and I really didn't like his shirt. Chris' shirt in BHS rules though. The little skull is just there and you just think "yeah". BTW, I think the mission the band was on in BIMH is to sell albums. I can almost garauntee it. Times of Trouble and footsteps are one in the same song i guess you could say. the music was written for temple but then later sent to eddie vedder along with alive and once. Does anyone ever say "just keep it off my wave" while arguing. How about "I was searching with my good eye closed." Anyone else? P.S. Im still searching with my good eye closed for Fresh and Deadly Rarities. ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 23 Jun 1997 to 24 Jun 1997 ************************************************
