Some of their earlier stuff has a straighter sound to it. (Heart and Lungs, Truly Drowning, Married in the Playground, I Hit Ignition). But even here, their style is rather lax. (I wont even mention how Roth's vocals sound on these, but only on Heart and Lungs and I Hit Ignition does he do a fair job). >I would even argue that at times the songs, some of which *are* pretty songs, >don't reach their full potential beacause of this. Don't worry, I also find that Roth is kinda the "weak" element. (Sure hope no members of the Truly-list reads this...) However, the vocals of Hiro and drummer Mark Pickerel weigh up for Roth's sometimes "lacking" voice. So I my problem isn't with the vocals, it's with the guitar. No doubt, his guitar-playing skills will develop, as far as I know, he's only been in one other band prior to Truly (The Storybook Krooks). What comes to mind is: wouldn't it be cool if Kim joined Truly? I've read in an interview that Hiro would very much like to work together with Kim, remember, they go way back together. For the song-writing part, he definitely has a lot of talent, and he's probably the one who understands how the songs should be performed to best convey their meaning. >I haven't listened closely enough to know, but I'd like to hear what >listers think. I know that it is pretty unfair to compare roth's guitar >skill or performance to kim's, but it seemed like a good reference point >(considering that I had only just finished listening to 'fresh tendrils' >before putting _kid coma_ in the stereo). It's a bit unfair. When considering that Roth also is the front man, wouldn't be better to compare him to Chris. All in all, he isn't too unlike Chris when you think about it. God damn record people... If there are any groups out there capable of doing SG songs, you know the damn record people won't put 'em on it. Case in point, the kiss tribute album. I'm not a huge kiss fan, but I was watching a video from before the album came out and Paul showed a list of groups that were supposed to do covers and Soundgarden was slated to do War Machine (kick ass song, BTW). There were some other cool selections like Tool, but what did we actually get in the end? GARTH BROOKS!?! GIN BLOSSOMS!?! Record people suck...But my question is, what do we do to prevent this abortion? Just wondering... -Tune _____________________________________________________________________ Sent by RocketMail. Funny thing, me and a few friends were just talking about JP and Captain Kangaroo last week. This has absolutely nothing to do with SG, except in response to the Mayor's post. JP was cool and then -poof- he was off the air. Fond memories recall (if we are correct) that ole JP was busted for cocaine, so I think he got yanked pretty quick after that. He must've scored big while they were at the North Pole, eh?! :) And it sort of begs the question: if JP was doing coke, than what in *the* hell was Gertrude on?????? :) (i guess you could appreciate it more if you grew up watching them...but gertrude was a "manly man" dressed very badly as a woman. sort of like a lumberjack or longshoreman type woman....lipstick way out to there...anyway....meaning a whole lot of nothing to most of you, i must apologize. too much work and not enough play makes bonnie whacko and spew senseless drivvel:)) I thought it was funny since we were just talking about the dude around here... Can I include anything SG related???? I don't know!!!! (using PeeWee Herman's best voice) Ummm....I went to the OK Tuesday night for the documentary/band thing on Andrew Wood. Not much was really happening that night, but I did suprise the hell out of the rest of the Seattle gang by just waltzing in at 10pm. I missed Ben by 2 and half hours. He was set to play with Macaw, but they cancelled and he headed back to Bainbridge at 7:30. Bummer, since I wasn't with the rest of the gang when they saw Macaw not so long ago. I did catch Brian Wood do an acoustic number with another guy. They were filming at that time. I don't know enough to comment on it, so maybe Jen can fill us in on the details of what she found out talking to the filmaker guys the other night. Anything, Jen?? :) Another band played (not part of the deal) called Stitch (sp?)from Cincinnati, OH. They were good and extremely nice and polite young fellows. Okay, too much fun for me all at once, must get back to work... The one-time 'Garden leader is believed to be talking to producers of the forthcoming 'Great Expectations' flick- starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Ethan Hawke and Robert De Niro - and is expected to sign up for the project soon. The film is likely to hit cinemas in December with the soundtrack scheduled for release a month earlier. If Cornell goes ahead, it would be the third time that he has produced solo material for a film. He recorded 'Seasons' for the early '90s grunge-inspired movie 'Singles' and also turned in an acoustic version of the Soundgarden sontg 'Like Suicide' for the soundtrack to culd hit film 'S.F.W.' Now if this ain't a fast recovery... See Ya Chris A. p.s. I don't think so!:) There is another winner that I know of. Since she hasn't said much lately, I thought I'd at least vouch for her very cheap copy of SOMMS. Of course, I will get the exact purchase price wrong, but it was something like $4-5 at a garage sale in just fine, if not perfect, condition. And the prize goes to...Shroomie! (where are ya girl??) If I'm not mistaken, she also happened upon an unopened copy, intact with the shrink wrap on it still. Incredible, eh? Well, if it wasn't Shroom, then didn't Vikki find one unopened as well? Or could it just be my day for hallucinations and none of this is true?? But seriously, Shroom got it for super cheap and someone got it unopened. But, our very own Geek Girl (they don't call her the Blessed SOMMS Goddess for nothing, mind you!) probably takes the cake for the person to have found (and purchased) the most copies of SOMMS at very reasonable prices...seven in a month or so at $20 a piece? She's been too quiet lately as well...where the hell are you two, Shroom and Dena?? Uh ohhh...figure it out, Shroom AND Dena both AWOL from the list? Something is up...:)) Anyway, I was able to get my copy through Dena and then a month later my used CD store got it in and called me. After reassuring me that they'd only ask $20-25 tops for it, when I casually asked the price they had upped it to $40. So I called them on their "oh so cool attitude" of earlier and they said, "That was before we found out it goes for between $60-80 in Seattle." Greedy assholes! And, stoopid me, *I'm* the one who told them that!! At the time (and always before that) they *were* super cool and nice. I could talk to them. Live and learn. Yeah, thought they had integrity or something. Sorry for the long-ass way to say all that. And I'm not trying to be rude or anything, Karen, when I wrote the nope stuff, your price was excellent as well. Great find!!! Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains is making a 'solo' album. At least that is what its being called. Its not going to include the regular crew of AIC. AIC's drummer is supposed to be on it and I was thinking, why not Chris or Kim? They could show up on it. Chris did SAP with AIC and Kim is a close friend of Jerry Cantrell, there is a picture of Kim and Cantrell at a basketball game on Seth's site under the pictures of Kim.
