Rolling Stone (page 19) John Colapinto writes about the split. He has a few quotes from Al Cafaro, chairman and CEO of A&M. Also Daniel house, a friend of the band and the head of C/Z records also the usual "source close to the band said" quotes and they also go for the usual "problems cropped up with Bassist Ben Shepherd" (lets blame Ben line). It had a good picture of the 4 and one of Chris that looked as if it's from the Australian tour. I did have a little chucle at this quote too: One source close to the band says that " the only thing keeping Chris from superstardom was that he was in a heavy-metal band. If he could somehow step out of it, he's groomed for the mainstream." There was also a section that just covered their history. That's about all interesting read. It REALLY sucks. I called the local radio station and asked them to play TDITTL, which is a pretty common song. I just wanted to hear SG on the radio. Instead what I got was, "Sorry, I can't play it, at least not for a while. I gotta play some 'mainstream' stuff first." This really pissed me off. Even when they broke up, I called the station and asked them to play anything from SG, and they said they would the next song. Instead what did I get but Marilyn Manson!!!!! Robert Roth is Truly's main song-writer, and from what I'm told (from the Truly list), he in fact writes all the songs with assistance from one Jim Carroll and the rest of the band. Hiro probably writes mostly the music part, but I've read in an interview that Hiro would like to write more than he does. We'll just have to wait for their new album. Well, the band used about five years to produce this album, where two were in the studio; so I don't think anything's a coincidence on it. Adam Kasper also produced and mixed some of the songs. This is the same guy Soundgarden used on SU and DOTU. The lax/sloppy sound is probably what they intended all the time. It's also important to note that Truly are renowned for their psychedelic sound and lyrics, which often means a more relaxed, floating kinda style. > I suppose it comes down to personal opinion again andy, just like >everything else in the sphere of music. I just bought "the making of superunknown" on friday, i believe, and i happen to like this book very much. It's not crap like NMC, nor is it purely pictures like the CD book (which isn't all that bad either). It's just an in-depth look at SU and it does go back and summarize LTL and BMF and things like that. then it goes through song-by- song SU (without She likes surprises, mind you) and i found out the most interesting thing about "4th of july." here's what chris said about it: "one time i was on acid, and there were voices ten feet behind me in my head. the whole time i'd be walking, they'd be talking behind me. it actually made me feel good, because i felt like i was with some people. at one point i was looking back, and i saw that one person was wearing a black shirt and jeans, and the other was wearing a red shirt. they were always there. it was kinda like a dream, though, where i'd wake up and look and focus once in a while and realize there was no one there. i'd go, "oh, fuck, i'm hearing voices." . . . 4th of july is pretty much about that day. you wouldn't get that if you read it. it doesn't read like, "woke up, dropped some acid, got into the car and went to the indian reservation." wow, i never ever thought that 4th of july had *anything* to do with drugs. makes me wonder... but, chris still does seem to get his humor in there, even when discussing a serious song. = ) mind riot ____ i know i'm headed for the bottom but i'm riding you all the way... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SOUNDGARDEN 1984-1997 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jun 1997 13:28:27 -0500 From: tonerkin Subject: Ya gotta have friends! Hi all, I have read several of the Soundgarden Friends posts over the weekend and had to sort of smile to myself. A fair number of people claim not to have any "friends" that are into SG. I think it was Rebekah who wrote" so basically you guys are my SG friends" and she is right. I just had a visitor this weekend, she is someone I met on this list, we became "friends" and she and her family came to Chicago to visit. There is nothing better than going into a record store with someone who has the same sweaty palms and directional system for the S row as yourself. We hit the doorway of Reckless Records(anyone having a flash back right now) pushed people out of the damn way as we went to the north wall and there we found a treasure trove of SG!!!!! Someone must of unloaded part of their collection and it was just waiting for our little grubby somms fingers to snatch them up!! I felt like Eliza on a very good VISA day!!! We didn't scratch and claw each other for the stuff it was one for you and one for me and so on!! OK OK so deep in a black little place in my heart I thought:"damn if I was alone it would be ALL mine!!" But the most fun was getting out of the store with our bags clutched tightly to our breast squealing and jumping up and down in unison. Yes, we are grown woman but does it matter when you make a SCORE!!!! Watching SG videos together until midnight! Having a cocktail on the porch with the boombox roaring SG and a summer storm raising to the west!! What a great weekend!! So make a Soundgarden friend on this list!! They're the best!!! Eliza, your words really brought out the emotions. Damn, how I wish I'd seen it. It also confirmed what I heard on the radio last week with Karen Cornell. I didn't hear much, but caught her talking a little bit about Chris... She said he's not as tense these days and is happy with his new direction, which she feels good about too. She mentioned that hes "semi-vegetarian," because he likes chicken and fish a lot. Chris is either in LA now (or has been recently) and he's tan and just feels really good. He was asked to write a song, but she didn't know if he was asked to sing or not (it might be the one we've already heard about). Karen also said she is always getting in trouble with her daughter in-law for saying "too much" about Chris and what not. She's so funny! That's about it. If anyone else heard more (or can correct what I may have *thought* I heard), please share it with us. I enojoy hearing Karen's perspective on what's going on with Chris (and the other kids too).
