He looked calm and rested and healthy. I like his hair that way. Pretty suave! Quite a contrast to how he looked in the Grammy interview, in which I thought he looked very tired and stressed out (small wonder). As for underappreciated songs, how about Drawing Flies? Alright, I admit that I didn't pay so much attention to it until I'd seen it done live, but now it's well up on my list. Is there a much more quotable lyric? Kinda says it all some days. Don't ever think that no one cares about Zero Chance or An Unkind! Those are two of my very favorites. Hunted Down and Entering are wonderful songs, and Heretic--ahh!-- I'd have to say that's about my favorite playing by Kim. I know, I know, it's spare and simple, but it's perfect, and the way the guitars sound on that song is just otherworldy. As for our dear underappreciated band, I'll tell you why so many people aren't taken with them-- they make you THINK. Their music is not "easy" and their lyrics are not "easy". You have to LISTEN to appreciate the complexity of textures and rhythms and the interplay of the instruments and vocals. And the lyrics make you feel genuine things, not melodrama. Soundgarden hits you in the guts and the subconscious at the same time. They can make you confront things within yourself that a lot of people would rather pretend isn't there. Most people when they listen to music, particularly when they turn on the radio or MTV, want candy-- something small, sweet, cute, neatly packaged, colorful, and simple. They want a bite of fun, and when it's gone it's gone and they'll have a bite of something else fun. A: I had some old, cheap pedal effect going into the amplifier and it picked up the radio and it was relly loud. If you would have taken the time (as I did) to search the mailing list archives you would have found this post from July 18, 1996. -Vikki From: erin@planet.eon.net Subject: boot camp mumblings/australian releases/BiMH on Much Okay.. This is what I got out of the mumblings at the beginning of Boot Camp. I think it's either a speech from a senator (or some other American-type politician or an analyst): "We're gonna increase taxes, increase taxes for the increased people coming into retirement. That will give us a centerpiece for income tax index [somethings I didn't get] which means that when people come back next year there'll be even less and even less the year after that and if inflation keeps going up that tax will be in such good meaning we can't think of losing it. [music] I'll tell you this, inflation is a grave digger. It causes this which leads to that which can stop giving meaning to this which will lead to extinction." That's what I got by turning off the left speaker and only listening to the right (I figured that most of the music was coming out of the left speaker). It doesn't make sense to me in some places, so I assume some of the things are wrong, but that's what I heard. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jun 1997 18:33:07 -0700 From: McMahon Potvin Subject: wouldn't it be cool??? hey sommsters!! i was listenin to some cds at random and stumbled upon one song... Well, I finally saw it. It took me long enough to get down the stairs with a broken fibula and crutches, but it was well worth it to me. I'm talking about the MSNBC tribute to Jeff Buckley. Of course, it was short, but at least I saw some clips of the 'Grace' video, which I had never seen before. And then there were the comments from Chris Cornell. Now Cornell and Buckley are a couple of the few of my fave male vocalists. To hear Cornell give his comments on Buckley's talent made me feel...well, good I guess. Rebekah Henderson posted earlier that JB opened for SG in '94. There's something I did not know. Would have definitely been an orgasmic night for me if I attended that show (or shows). Thanks be to seth for at least posting the time of the showing. I may have fallen asleep, missing it. I don't watch a lot of TV. Oh yeah, Lance Huber posted this: >The only cool thing a bout a SG G hits album would be, with the trend of the >90's, there would be 3 or 4 *NEW* songs just so people would buy it. Hmmm...I was thinking about that today. But maybe it would be better if the CD would be less hits (like BHS, heaven forbid) and more of the rarities, including Karaoke, which I like A LOT. And of course, the 3 or 4 new songs. Today (Sunday) is the first time I've read the digest since Thurs. Friday night I had this overpowering desire to listen to BMF, and I started thinking about Chris. And since then I haven't been able to get him out of my mind. Here comes the strange part. In the past whenever I would start thinking about SG or dreaming about them after one of their disappearing acts within days I would hear news about a tour, or an album, or something else SG related. So I was just about to write to the list to expect to hear something from Chris when I read the last few digests and found out that Chris is going to be on MSNBC! Now if only I could get MSNBC, which I can't. Oh, its been very interesting to just sit back and observe the list activity over the last few weeks. Its refreshing to see people standing up for the integrity of the list. For a while I was wondering if we were going to be able to make it. Thanks to everyone who cares enough to stick around and get things back on track.
