Please read this! The following are some guidelines for ensuring your stay at the SOMMS Hotel is a pleasant one and that you don't piss of the other guests or the people at the Front Desk: 1) Is the message you're about to send to the list Soundgarden-related? If not, you should not send it. 1a) Is the message you're about to send a chain letter or other useless spam? If so, be advised that a) you will no longer be allowed to post to the list and b) most service providers and universities enjoy deleting the accounts of people who perpetuate such crap on the Net. 2) Are you responding to a thread that died 6 days ago because you just now got around to checking your email? If so, think about whether you really want to rekindle the fire or if you just want to see your name in the digest. 2a) Are you responding to a thread that died six days ago and is not Soundgarden-related? If so, think about whether or not you really want to be taken off the SOMMS Hotel guest list. 3) Are you quoting a 3-page message and adding one new line of your own? If so, why don't you go back and delete all of the quoted message except the relevant portions? 3a) Are you quoting the entire digest and sending it back to the list? If so, why don't you go back and delete all of the quoted digest except the relevant portions? (Note: failure to comply with this guideline is grounds for eviction from the hotel) 3b) Is your signature 64 times as long as the text of your message? Hey, we here at the SOMMS Hotel love ASCII art as much as anyone, but come on. seth Hotel Concierge ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 May 1997 09:55:00 -500 From: "Audrey L. Hillyard" Subject: Record Sales Has anyone else noticed how record companies are trying to "weed out" grunge rock bands and alternative rock now? It must be because they have "disappointing" record sales. They don't sell twenty million copies like the bouncing boob girls... I mean, the Spice Girls. What comes around goes around, so while so-called alternative blew pretty much everything else off the charts in the early 90s, dance/techno/pop whatever was bound to make a comeback. Maintaining the perception that music is fresh and new helps sell records. Newer so-called alternative acts haven't really broken any new ground as of late. As for some of the media's treatment of DOTU re record sales, I too would hardly consider 3 million to be disappointing, but then again, many other groups whose follow-up doesn't sell like the previous album have been labelled "disappointments." It could have been worse: Had it sold only 1 mil, they probably would have called it a flop! I'm going to stop media-bashing now : ) audrey ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 May 1997 14:47:49 +0300 From: Matt Cameron Subject: Re: Record Sales Hi well i think DOTU was a disappoinment for me when i found out it only sold 3 mil of course the cd itself is AMAZING but i think it deserved more. after all SU sold more the 5 mil copies wich is great but like i think DOTU is a better cd (wich is my indevidual taste) and it sold less, but i thought about it and maybe SU did sold more because it had BHS but i`m not sure.... well c`ya ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------ BEWARE: You have just been e-mail from Matt Cameron You may Replay this mail to:stimpy1@netvision.net.il ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------ ---------- > From: MICHAEL APPLE > To: SOMMS@MITVMA.MIT.EDU > Subject: Record Sales > Date: Thursday, May 15, 1997 3:23 AM > > Date sent: 14-MAY-1997 19:19:36 > > A lot of media is calling "Down On The Upside" a "disappointment" > because it *only* sold three million copies worldwide. Right now, no bands that out there that have talent (R.E.M. or Pearl Jam for example) are selling well for whatever reason so the fact that DOTU has gone on to sell around 3 million is pretty phenomenal. -vince ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 May 1997 10:26:23 -0500 From: Vince Varkey Subject: Soundgarden/Spawn movie soundtrack I was reading some entertainment magazine yesterday and saw that Soundgarden was apparently going to contribute a song to the upcoming Spawn movie, which is going to be released later this year. Korn was another of the bands that they mentioned contributing to it. I don't know how credible this news is but it sounds a little intriguing to me. -vince ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 May 1997 17:03:27 -0400 From: Tracey McCabe Subject: Hi there DOTU is a great album and I can't believe that anyone could call it a disappointment when it got 3 million sales. At least there is some media coverage of SG where you are, if it wasn't for this bulletin, I would still be under the blissful illusion that SG were still together. Subject: Re: Hater show history Seth, I saw Hater for one of the first times back in 1994 when they played at RCKNDY in Seattle. They played with Skiploader, Superdeluxe, and some three piece outfit that just sucked. The show was cool. I can't remember the month. I want to say August or September. Can anyone remember that date? Court ---------- From: owner-somms To: SOMMS Subject: Hater show history Date: Wednesday, May 14, 1997 5:54PM Hello all, As some of you probably know, one of my other Web projects (besides the SG site) is the Hater website at http://www.shocking.com/hater/. I'm trying to put together a detailed list of the few shows Hater has done in its short career, and thanks to Caryn, Thug, Justin, USDeb, and Andrea, I've managed to get some information about seven shows since 1993. However, there are some particulars missing, and this is my official request for assistance from anyone who may know the answers to any of the following: - On March 22, 1996, Hater played the OK Hotel. One of the other bands there that night was Doo Rag. Who was the third band? - In March 1996, Hater played the Pioneer Square Theatre. What was the exact date of this show? Who were the other bands that played? Thanks to Andrea, it seems that one of the bands was the Fallouts, and the other band was an all-female group whose name starts with "Fl" (e.g., Fluffy). More details are needed. If anyone knows of any other Hater gigs that are not listed on the website, or can provide setlists, that would be great. Thanks, seth PS - If you have a chance, check out Thug's excellent photos from Saturday's show at the OK Hotel. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 May 1997 13:51:57 -0400 From: CUTIGERS88 Subject: Chris sings with Iommi Hi guys! I just heard something that needed passing along. If you already know, then please forgive me. Tony Iommi has finished a project with some guest singers, including Chris. I heard this a few months ago, but there was no confirmation who exactly would be on it. The release has been delayed because Black Sabbath is on tour or something. Anyway, Glenn Hughes was chatting on his homepage the other day about this project and he confirmed the rumors. Glenn sings on 8 tracks, Billy Corgan sings on 4, and Chris is on 1 song. This is all I can tell you. I would like to hear him on more songs than that, but we take what we can get. Life Rules! That I could make a stencil from. I'm making a T-shirt for my nephew who is only 1 month old, the main aim is to combat the T-shirt I've been asked to make by my brother which is a Zero shirt (a la Billy Corgan) it's suppose to be because that's how old he is.
