There are tons of great songs on that record. Take "Let Me Drown" for instance. I think the guitar riff on that song is amazing. There is nothing to it, but it just sounds so cool! The same goes for "The Day I Tried to Live." Anyone can learn to play that song in five minutes, but it takes guys with such outstanding skill and talent like Chris and Kim to really make it really sound good. You may probably think I am not a worthy Soundgarden fan because I like some of the songs some of you aren't crazy about. That doesn't really matter to me. They are my favorite band, and will always be no matter what anybody says or who comes along (KoRn, Manson, White Zombie, etc.). I had never heard Soundgarden until DOTU. I liked what I heard. BUTOW and BIMH are awesome songs. When I heard "Spoonman" on the radio, I just had to hear more. I got a copy of Superunknown, and I have hardly ever taken it out of my cd player yet. I have only heard certain songs from BMF on the radio ("rusty cage" and "outshined"). Because of the recent "catastrophe" and because I am from western Canada, where no disks over a year old are ever stocked, I have not been lucky enough to locate Badmotorfinger. When I do finally find it, you can be certain I will snatch it up, and treasure it for the rest of my life. The way I look at it, if a band is your favorite, you should be able to listen to the songs that you may not like that much and still appreciate the good parts of the song, because with Soundgarden, you can be guaranteed there is no such thing as a sucky song. They aren't (or shouldn't I say weren't) capable of producing a bad product. Thank you for taking the time to read this, my insight for the decade. I don't think there is a single SG song that I don't at least really like!! I do have favorites, and they are spread across all the albums. I, too, think BMF is a masterpiece, and probably the album I play the most (of anything by anybody), but I was not at all disappointed in SU or DOTU. I wouldn't want to be without any of it! I am a person of varied tastes and moods and one thing that really pleases me about SG is that there is always something there for me regardless of what mood I'm in or how my tastes are swayed at any particular time. That is what was so wonderful about SG, they did so many different things so well. I always found the changes from one release to the next refreshing and exciting. Head Down, Fell on Black Days, My Wave, Spoonman, Let Me Drown, The Day I Tried to Live, Half (yes, Half), Kickstand. . . They all do it for me like no one else can!! Jen Grover ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 May 1997 03:54:34 -0400 From: RiTa Subject: superunknown reactions the question asked was how fans who got into soundgarden through badmotorfinger and before reacted to superunknown. the answer is..........i was not impressed with spoonman, the first song i heard off the new album. well, maybe not impressed is too strong a statement, i was "suprised" by spoonman. you see, badmotorfinger blew my god damn head off, and i guess my standards were very high for their next album. when i finally bought the album, let me drown (yes, you read that right, LET ME DROWN) kinda eased my dissapo..err, i mean suprisement (thats not even a word is it? ;). i was comforted by chris' wail in that song. superunknown took a couple of listening to's before i really was able to enjoy it. the problem was, i continued to compare it to badmotorfinger, i guess i was expecting su to be badmotorfinger, part 2. it wasn't. black hole sun really shocked the hell out of me...what the hell is this, i wondered. but it grew on me, the entire album did. it wasn't like i thought the album was a piece of crap when i first heard it (i mean, come on! its STILL soundgarden!), i just thought it was...different, good different, of course! :) tracks like 4th of july, like suicide and tdittl also blew my mind, they were just a little different from what i had grown to expect from soundgarden. when i stopped comparing superunknown to badmotorfinger, i was able to fully appreciate and respect the new musical direction that the boys were headed in, instead of being dissapointed by it. ________ RiTa ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 May 1997 02:58:17 -0700 From: RoseeMisst Subject: superunknown >I had a question. I've said this recently; I got into SG first with BMF, back in the days when I didn't even know who Hiro Yamamoto was. To tell you the truth, I hated SU when I first heard it(trying to compare it to BMF), but then I acquired the CD later and listened again...especially to Kim. That was THE CD that made me the SG LOVER. And some remember the infamous SG Bowling episode(the weeks of the new album, 1994) I guess the videos helped a bit too, but I couldn't stand BHS for a while... As for pre-BMF material...I like Louder Than Love, but I listened to that only recently. A mind blow for an SG fan who hasn't heard much of old SG...gotta thank Lance for those compilations. Hey seth, still gotta get that 'stereo' experience. I would LOVE to hear SU and BMF blasting...especially the intro to JCP. ^~@ RoseeMisst @~^ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 May 1997 03:08:23 -0700 From: Jason Thompson Subject: Superunknown/ Temple of the Dog - Pearl Jam The first song that I really liked on superunknown had to be Limo Wreck. The last 2 to click were Half and Spoonman. I like Spoonman a lot better after hearing the heavier live version at 2 of their concerts this year. I was listening to some cd's the other day and I threw in my Pearl Jam Jeremy single. I originally picked it up on clearance for $4 to get the b-side Yellow Ledbetter. I finally listened to the other b-side - Footsteps. It has a remarkable simiilarity to Times of Trouble by Temple of the Dog. I know that the guitarists are the same so nobody's pulling a Silverchair ;-), but I was wondering why the guitar part was used in both songs. I know there are some PJ buffs on the list that would know, so post to the list if you know anything about the 2 songs. J ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 May 1997 21:28:25 +1000 From: spoonman Subject: thoughts on albums I am only a new Soundgarden fan, but they are my favourite band by far. I heard BIMH on the radio and I said "that song is the most amazing song I've ever heard" so I went out and bought DOTU. My first impressions were it had a few amzing songs ( BIMH, Dusty, Boot Camp, An Unkind) but there wasn't enough depth in it. You couldn't just let the whole thing play, you had to skip songs like Zero Chance, Never Named, Overfloater. Anyway, a month or so later, I went down and listened to SU. It was probably the most intreuging time in my entire life. Songs like Like Suicide, limo Wreck, My Wave, Spoonman, Superunknown were probably the best 5 or so songs I had heard in my entire life, and all on the same album!!! The depth in that album is sensational. Every song has been perfected to the finest detail. Every vocal overdub, lead guitar part etc has been finished so well. That is what makes this album so good. Now, jumping forward about 4 months, I reluctantly decide to buy BMF. I say this because I felt that it would be a bit too heavy for my liking. However, I was blown away by its intensity. The power of Outshined is just brilliant. That song is my favourite all time song by far. Anyway, songs on that one like Searching, Slaves, Drawing, Rusty, Jesus, Somewhere, ( hang on a second, I love all the songs on this album!!!) So in order, my favourite Soundgarden albums are: Superunknown Badmotorfinger Down on the Upside Louder than Love Does anybody know why Cornell always mentions snakes in his lyrics? I must say I'm amazed that so many people say they disliked SU when it first came out. This is the album that got me into Soundgarden, I was totally blown away the first time I heard it. Same thing goes for DOTU. I'm also quite puzzled about what the band says about this release, they go something like: "We think a lot of people will be shocked by this but it's just us returning to where we were in the beginning..." I don't really get that. Sure, the album contains a few punk sounding songs (that I prefer to look upon as very intelligent jokes, "Ty Cobb" is not a very serious song, though containing some heavy irony), that could be some sort of mid-eighties-Seattle revival, but the album is so diverse! For me, the more mellow and slow/soft songs on this album (Tighter & Tighter, BIMH, BUTOW, Overfloater, Zero Chance .........) represent Soundgarden at the very peak of their career. It continues where SU ends. I have always looked upon Soundgardens development towards the more mellow sound (abandonig the famous "wall of sound" that made them famous) as a typical example of a band maturing, transforming into something more diverse and qualitative. As an example; listen to Kim's guitar work on UMOK, the solos are quite mainstream "glam" sounding. When compared to the magnificent guitar work on "Fell on Black Days", "Like Suicide", "Limo Wreck" or "Overfloater" they are not even in the same division. Don't get me wrong now, I think Kim Thayil has always been a great guitarist but he has improved greatly over the last couple of years. I think that goes for the whole band. On BMF the band began exploring new territory, on SU I believe they really found what they were looking for but they didn't stay there, (that would have been very easy to do, DOTU could have been just a SU #2) they just kept on going and ended up making one of the most impressive albums I ever heard. On the other hand, all of Soundgarden's work is impressive... Among fans there seems to be a very strong urge to prove that you're a "real" fan by saying: "I like their earlier work the best", like you want to prove that you were in it from the beginning. If I meet someone that listens to DOTU and think it rocks, but hasn't heard any of Soundgarden's earlier work (except for BHS of course...), in my opinion he's just as much a fan as the guy listening to Screaming Life, saying: "Their late albums are *SO* over-hyped, fucking media.......". Hell, I could be wrong. be careful out there, /martin. _________________________________________________________ "How did you get so big, eating food of this kind?" -Yoda http://www.privat.katedral.se/~nv95mnar/aic/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 May 1997 11:46:12 -0400 From: Kelly Hendricks Subject: ??QUESTIONS?? Just let the work be what it is and speak for itself. Sometime put on a song you think you don't like or that you've stopped lisening to because it felt overplayed. Pretend you don't know what it is and that you've never heard it before. Open up your mind and just let the song happen to you. If you still don't like it, that's fine. I was just no album soundgarden ever made would ever compare to the sales of su. these pundits seem to forget what time su was released, at the height of the "seattle music explosion". soundgarden was a hot item at the time for all the bandwagon jumpers who missed bmf in 1991, if memory serves me correctly, they were all too busy smelling teen spirit when bmf was released. these people have since moved on to lovable bands like bush and no doubt, and they have taken their record buying dollar with them. GOOD RIDDENCE! i said this before, we may be fewer, but we're certainly better. and i don't know, maybe its ME or perhaps i am naive when it comes to the record industry, but i thought double platinum was excellent. finally, am i gonna be the only one who admits that i was truly dissapointed with su, not for any meaningful musical reasons, but because it was the first album and set of videos featuring a newly coiffued and very short-haired version of chris cornell? Music soothes the savage beast, right? Well, we just got a cat Wednesday night and she was absolutely terrified in the car, but we had to go to the store, to get her food, a litterbox, etc. I stayed in the car with her while my mother went in. The cat was still a little skittish and trying to find a way out of the car. I was bored so I was listening to the radio and they were playing crap (non-SG songs). I saw a tape in the tape deck and I remembered that I had taped some songs for my mom to listen to in her car. One of them was "Burden In My Hand" (she loves that song!). Perfect!!!! I found the song on the tape, blared it and enjoyed. The cat got really calm. She was getting really lovey-dovey. Rubbing up against me and sniffing the tape deck trying to figure out where that music was coming from. She didn't care much for the radio and she still doesn't like it, but I'm playing SG right now behind me (DOTU) and she's laying on the computer desk. When BIMH came on, she got really relaxed. She likes all of their songs, but so far BIMH seems to be her favorite. "Tighter & Tighter" is playing right now and she's really laid back. I find it so cute that the only other living creature I've met who likes SG as much as me just happens to be a cat. :) I just thought this was cute and I was wondering if SG has this affect on other SOMMSters pets or if I lucked out in getting a really cool cat. :) May Soundgarden be with you. I always seem to go backwards in my record buying, but these are my thoughts. I have always liked everything I've heard by SG except BHS. I've heard SG alot on the radio, but I didn't know it was them. I had heard "Outshined" a hundred times on the radio, but I didn't know it was SG. All I knew of them was BHS and I had grown sick of that song. I still get a little bored whenever I hear it. I've heard "The Day I Tried To Live" on the radio alot and I've always liked it. In my opinion that's the most brilliant song they've ever done and it's got the coolest video. I've always liked "Spoonman" and that was a cool video too. I've always liked the TOTD songs, but I didn't pay much attention to that being SG-related. Why??? Because whenever someone mentioned SG, the first thing to pop into my head was BHS. That song almost ruined SG for me. Until the release of DOTU that is. I really liked "Pretty Noose" for it's high vocal parts and distinguishable intro. I liked BIMH because it was so catchy. So I bought that album. I heard those songs mainly on the radio too. Then I proceeded to go back in time by then buying Superunknown, Badmotorfinger, Louder Than Love, Ultramega OK, and Screaming Life/Fopp. Since I went backwards, I was very surprised to hear how much Chris' voice had changed. When I listened to Louder Than Love for the first time, I couldn't really believe that was him singing because he sounded completely different. Because of that, I didn't listen to Louder Than Love again for a really long time. Gradually, I started getting back into it and it's probably my favorite SG album at the moment. I change my mind frequently. :) I believe SU is an excellent album, nonetheless, it's still sterile. It's too perfect; too slick. I mean, when you listen to all their other albums and then SU, it's like 'Is this the same band?' It's just too 'good', you know? I haven't heard one sound that sounds like it's out of place on that album. I listen to DOTU every once in a while. I listened to it today, but I can't seem to get into it right now. There's something that seems wrong with that ablum. Maybe it's because it's their last one. I really don't know. I prefer to listen to the younger SG. I prefer Screaming Life/Fopp. I listen to it and I wonder if the guys were thinking about being popular when they made it. If they had huge aspirations of becoming famous and making wonderful money from their music. I wonder if they wanted it then. If that's what they wanted to do forever. I do the same thing with UMOK and LTL. With BMF, it had already started. Like most SOMMSters, BMF would be the album I listen to alot along with LTL. I'm really into the younger version SG right now because the feelings of excitement and the anxiety of an unknown future seem to be there and I love listening to them. For right now, SU and DOTU can wait. I'm sure I'll get back into them at some point in time. May Soundgarden be with you. Date sent: 10-MAY-1997 20:07:58 ...I just wanted to add what I thought about Louder Than Love, the first time I listened to it. It was two years ago when I decided it was time to buy the rest of Soundgarden's catalogue. I had just gotten my first decent job. (I had worked for McDonald's the summer before, but they had cheated me out of so many wages that I stole everything I could get my hands on, then quit.) LTL was the first pre-Badmotorfinger album of their's that I heard. I had heard of "Big Dumb Sex" and "Hands All Over", but had never actually gotten a chance to hear the songs. So when I put the cassette in the car stereo I was blown away. LTL has got to be the heaviest SG album of them all. And it wasn't because the record company was trying to market them as a metal band, either. LTL is just crammed with really heavy rock songs, like "Ugly Truth", "I Awake", and "Get On The Snake." This album was before its time. If it were released in 1994, I have no doubt that it would have done just as well as Superunknown, BHS or not. This was grunge rock before the grunge era. :) (By the way, the same time I got LTL, my brother bought Ultramega OK. He had a similar reaction to it. :) Later, Michael Apple ************************************************** Pale in the flare light The scared light cracks and disappears And leads the scorched ones here And everywhere, no one cares the fire is spreading And no one wants to speak about it. - "4th Of July", Soundgarden ************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 May 1997 20:53:14 -0500 From: tonerkin Subject: Cats like to chase thread At 02:23 PM 5/10/97 -0400, you wrote: > I >just thought this was cute and I was wondering if SG has this affect on >other SOMMSters pets Yes, it affected my cat too......he is now deaf! toni ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 May 1997 22:18:05 -0400 From: Rohin Bhalla Subject: SG tribute national broadcast? well im listening to this Soundgarden tribute by some company that i am pretty sure is being nationally broadcast, ton of interviews, especially with hiro.... i didn't hear anybody talk about it on the list here, so anybody reading this, try to find it on your local station now! its 9 pm central time here ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 May 1997 00:04:34 -0300 From: Adriana Jacoto Subject: Re: australian mtv Dave wrote: > > How come australia gets to have an mtv soundgarden mini concert? the > only good that american mtv has done, is fire all the vj's. so i guess > we dont get to see it.
