I know that as As caryn rose pointed out, these things depend on the contract. Unless one has access to the wording of the acutal contract, conjecture is rather useless. No, I'm not suggesting that we try to obtain a copy of the contract :) I doubt that Soundgarden "owes" any more records to anyone, because I doubt that their contract would require a dis-banded band to continue to work together. Lacking the contract, though, it's impossible to know what the contract requres. Tiffany ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 May 1997 09:10:27 -0700 From: Dave Subject: Foreshocks. The Hater cd was on A&M, and although it was not technically an artist leaving the band, A&M still issued it. I would imagine that A&M will have first shot at any solo stuff from the guys unless the artist joins a group that is already contracted to another label (i.e. Devilhead). Justin... that post was *amazing*. New Damage' is one of my all time favorite songs, as well. (Beware... senseless hootchie babbling will follow.) Everytime I hear it, I feel like I'm in the middle of a summer lightening storm. Here in Texas we get treated to them fairly often, and they're quite awesome to experience... just like listening to New Damage (especially the NRG version). The beginning is foreboding (Chris' scream during the intro), but there's that delicious promise of a wild ride that you just can't say no to. I swear that Chris must have written this song during a storm. And not just some little shower... I'm talking about one of those crazy, wind-whipping, "Is this Armageddon?" storms that will *really* scare the hell out of you {when new damage comes}... but is, at the same time, exhilarating and even better than drugs. Well, unless you're already on drugs when the storm hits. ;-) The sheer pressure of the atmosphere makes it difficult to breathe (not to mention the humidity), but yet the air seems charged... giving you goosebumps and making it feel like your hair is standing on end. All the while there's a beautiful lightening show going on in the distance... and just when you think that the storm might be heading away, it literally *pounces* on you. The wind doesn't just blow... it kind of spins and swirls around you, pulling and pushing at you. You can just imagine some supernatural forces fighting for control of the earth {a new world order}. The whole event just builds and builds until the thunder (Ben's bass & Matt's drums), lightening (Kim or Brian's guitar) and shrieking wind (Chris' amazing vocals) completely overwhelm your senses and you wonder if it really IS the end of the world {get out before you drown}... but then it suddenly ends, and a warm rain finishes everything off {Chris' "yeahhhh" a the end}. Stupid hootchies don't know when to seek shelter from the elements. ;-) >music - this is truly one of the most powerful songs ever recorded >by soundgarden over their ten year career. No disrespect Justin... but ten years? If SG originated in 1984... don't ya think it was more like 13 years? (Or 12 years and unknown months.) Unless you consider the beginning of their career when they released their first EP? I just found that curious. I think that the band considers themselves to have had at least a 12 year career. >the dynamics and textures forged by the band are, to my mind, >nothing but brilliant. perfect arrangement, perfect mixing, >perfectly conceived. Sometimes you just have to take a chance. Then of course their is always the radio. If I hear something I like on the radio, I'll either try to find out something more, either thru word of mouth or maybe an article, but mostly I'll take a chance. If its good stuff then good for me...if it sucks, then I chalk it up to experience. I don't buy that band again. Maybe I'll be thumbing through some music trade rag and a review will sound particularly good and I'll go out and buy it. But, for me, music reviews are like movie reviews...I almost always end up having the exact opposite opinion of the critic after having heard the music or seen the movie. I thought this was very interesting (the Clockwork Orange bit). I read the book, yet to see the movie although I have listened to the Soundtrack. So how is the book suppose to end exactly? There wouldn't have been any closure, and have made a fairly short book even shorter, there would have been no moral (I thought the American Society liked Moralistic tales?). Popular groups to come out of the grunge scene were Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam's Ten and Nirvana's Nevermind had huge commercial appeal, attracting widely diverse audiences." - The Enjoyment of Music (7th Edition), p. 417-418. Isn't that cool?
