Golly gee whiz where the hell is everyone?
From Addicted to Noise:
Addicted To Noise Senior Writer Gil Kaufman reports: In a new spin on the
old James Brown plea to "give the drummer some," an album due out this
summer aims to give a gang of alternative rock drummers their due.

Called Flyin' Traps, the instrumental percussion record on Hollywood
Records features ex-Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron on a self-penned tune
called "Theme From Holy-O," the Flaming Lips' Steven Drozd playing his
composition "Headphones Theme From Seemingly Infinity," Porno For Pyros'
Stephen Perkins doing his tune "Monkey in Brazil," Mudhoney's Dan Peters
covering Ray Davies' (Kinks) "Do You Remember Walter?," and the Melvins'
Dale Crover with the appropriately sick, "Vomit and Orange Juice."

Other artists on the collection, produced by Redd Kross' Brian Reitzell,
include: Reitzell "Snake and Mongoose," former drummer J. Mascis (Dinosaur
Jr.) "Car!," Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees/Tuatara) "Barnburner," Joey
Waronker (Beck) "Chorkle is Dead," Josh Freese (Slider/Paul Westerberg)
"The Gay 90's," Tim "Herb" Alexander (ex-Primus/Laundry) "Choked," Mac
McNeilly (ex-Jesus Lizard) "Lime," Michael Musburger (Fastbacks) "Noodles,"
Alexis Fleisig (Girls Against Boys) "Don't Ruin Me Gorgeous" and Chris
Vrenna (ex-NIN) "The Steel Box."

In the liner notes to the collection, Modern Drummer magazine Assistant
Editor Adam Budofsky, says of the contributions, "I'd wager that even
listeners who recognize the names of the drummers on Flyin' Traps will be
pretty surprised by the diverse and mesmerizing sounds they discover here.
The full spectrum not only of drumming, but of musical expression is
represented, from Barrett Martin's squelchy urban jungle, to Stephen
Drozd's cosmic sonic space voyage, to Joey Waronker's sinister avant-garde
groove experiment--to Dan Peters' neat re-interpretation of Ray Davies
jewel."

(no disrespect intended to anyone who likes garbage, but you have to admit that a band that's released one album thus far cannot be judged to have contributed anything substantial to "alternative" music, even if butch vig IS part of the band...) corporate magazines still suck. ;-) --caryn ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 May 1997 20:26:37 -0400 From: Caryn Rose Subject: hater at the showbox 5/2 to our utter dismay, this show was hyped big time by the local sucky alterna-station. yes, it was a great bill (huge spacebird, hater, valis [members of tad, mudhoney, screaming trees, etc.] and the fastbacks) but we know perfectly well that they have never paid any attention to hater before and wouldn't be doing so now if it wasn't for the fact that soundgarden broke up. so the crowd was full of ppl who could care less about hater and were there to gawk. luckily hater was second on the bill so it wasn't too crowded by the time they came on, since most ppl of course assumed that they were headlining this bill. not that i expected loads o' personality and snappy stage patter from ben, but a 'hello, thank you for coming' might have been nice. there was ZERO between-songs chat and zero eye contact with the audience by any of the band. the set was paralyzed for at least the first 5 songs by the worst mix i have EVER heard. you could NOT hear the vocals to save your life. and when someone in the crowd yelled something to that effect, ben's predictable response was something abusive like "i'll give you some vocals, fucknut". after the mix was sorted out, i have to say that it was a really good set. ben's guitar playing is improving, matt was, well, matt cameron. ;-) but the audience was dead, except for a couple obnoxious fratboys near the front (yes, we were sitting in the back near the soundboard, as far away as we could get ;-) ). no one was moving around or even seemed to be paying much attention and there was little if no applause or response between songs. i wonder if this wasn't a little too big of a venue for them (800). they seemed kind of lost. they ended abruptly and left the stage. aaron got the setlist and posted it earlier. oh, there was a DAT hooked up to the soundboard for the set. i cannot imagine they are thinking of a live hater album but who knows. ;-) no pictures, no tapes -- i may shoot the ok hotel show next week but i don't know if i want to be that near the stage. next week they open for eleven and the ok is a nicer, much more intimate venue, and it is, of course, the ok ;-) --caryn ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 May 1997 20:28:20 -0500 From: MICHAEL APPLE Subject: Re: Caryn Rose/CrappyCorporateMags Date sent: 4-MAY-1997 20:23:26 Caryn, I agreed one hundred percent that music magazines opinions of Soundgarden shouldn't affect out opinion on them and their music. But I think that we should still be up in arms over that Rolling Stone "best" 200 albums article. The reason I say that is because these magazines are going to be the record that people may refer to years from now, when the whole Seattle grunge scene fades into history. I think that it's our duty to make sure that these bozos in these magazines get their facts straight. If we don't get outraged about it and force some changes, people in the future might get the wrong impression about our music. So, while it's fundamental that we listen to music that we like, not because of some dumbass reporter's opinion (music reviews are complete crap in my opinion), we've got to make sure that the truth comes through in magazine articles. If we aren't part of the solution, we're part of the problem. If we don't >get outraged about it and force some changes, people in the future might >get the wrong impression about our music. "force" some changes?! and how exactly do you propose that we will have any effect on them? and on what do you base your assertion that "these magazines are going to be the record that people may refer to years from now"? why a magazine, as opposed to a book, of which there have been several excellent ones? why not a movie such as hype!? why not a magazine such a time or newsweek, who covered the "grunge revolution"? this sounds like all the pearl jam fans who were up in ARMS over the rolling stone hatchet-job about eddie. they wanted to organize petitions, a letter-writing campaign, etc. and at the end of the day, it doesn't matter. they don't give a shit about what *we* think, because we are not their target audience! rolling stone is aimed at people who listen to the radio for background music and buy records based on impulse. those are the people who need to be told what to buy and for whom a top 200 list will impress. good music is good music, period. rolling stone has done these top 100/200 albums before and there were always bands missing and i don't see any band who had a real impact fading away. who, precisely, will be relying on rolling stone as a guide in the future? anyone who relies on rolling stone, and only rolling stone, deserves what they get. soundgarden do not need any stupid corporate magazine to ensure their place in rock history. they as a band have already ensured that. their albums aren't going to be disappearing out of the record store any time in the near or distant future. i'm sure that whatever future musical ventures the individual members take part in will keep their back catalogue in stock for many years to come. > So, while it's fundamental that we listen to music that we like, not >because of some dumbass reporter's opinion (music reviews are complete crap >in my opinion), we've got to make sure that the truth comes through in >magazine articles. If we aren't part of the solution, we're part of the >problem. the rolling stone top 200 was not a factual article about the band. it was an OPINION. it's just one big record review. has nothing to do with "truth". --caryn ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 May 1997 23:42:25 -0400 From: Larry Grover Subject: rage Does anybody have the Soundgarden rage stuff on video?
