Subject: Okokok... the REAL reason that SG broke up.

It seems like fifteen million people have written to me and asked just WHY
Soundgarden has broken up. It's like everyone thinks that Chris and I play
bingo together every Wednesday night, or something. So I'm here to let you
people know the TRUTH. It's all my fault. =( You might hate me by the end
of this post, but at least you'll be able to sleep better at night for
knowng. This is why our favorite band decided to split sheets:

It all started on a cold, late November night in Austin, Texas. I had gone
to watch Soundgarden play, and just happened to make my way into their
dressing room after the show. (Thanks again, Mark!) I munched my fill from
their massively laden catered food table... and after listening to Ben's war
stories from the previous months Hater show for about ten minutes... I
decided to do some exploring. I made my way down the long hallway that ran
behind the stage, and after a few twists and turns, I found myself standing
in front of a slightly opened door. Initially finding nothing interesting
about it, I began to turn around and make my way back to the dressing room to
hang out with Jim Rose and his freaky friends (oh yeah, and Ben too). I had
taken no more than three steps, when I heard some rather curious noises
emerging from behind the door. I stopped to watch it for a moment, and saw
some flashes going off rather quickly... and then stop. As soon as the light
ended... the noises ended, too. For some reason I found this a bit more
interesting than yet another story about the infamous Hater show (even if it
WAS from the rockstar perspective)... so I called upon all my learned
detective powers (Nancy Drew, baybeee), and decided to investigate. I slowly
pushed the door open, and what horrific sight greeted my eyes?? Chris
Cornell and Matt Cameron, dressed in matching grass skirts... and you will
NEVER in a MILLION BILLION years guess what they were doing!!! They were...
*gasp*... hula-hooping. Yes, that's right kiddies... I'm sorry to shock you
with the terrifying thought of it... but two of our favorite rockstars were
giggling and wiggling their hips while trying to keep a large round hoop from
hitting the floor for longer than the other... and they had set up a camera
to record this ultramega personal moment for their private 'rockstar-bonding'
scrapbook. I swear, I would have fainted dead on the spot from shock... but
Matt happened to notice me peeking in the doorway... and he gave out a rather
high squeal that scared Chris so badly, he took a step backwards and tripped
over his hula hoop... and he fell onto his butt next to the camera. What a
scene this was, kiddies. I was mortified to discover Chris and Matt to be
closet-Hawaiian-babe-dressing-retro-acting-weenies!! Oh woe was this poor
hootchie! We all just stared at each other for a rather uncomfortable
minute, and then Chris immediately reverted to his
'macho-rockstar-publicity-handling-I-know-you-want-my-sexy-body' self... and
began to try and coerce a promise of silence from me. (Matt was sitting on
the couch during this exchange, nervously biting his nails and watching the
two of us.) Of course, I wasn't buying the whole deal. I mean c'mon... what
was in it for ME? Oh, he offered alot of tempting things... free tickets for
life, backstage passes for all my friends, tapes of never-before-heard demo
songs... hell, the guy even whipped out some naked pictures of Eddie Vedder
playing the flute... but this hootchie isn't stupid. I wanted three things:
a piggyback ride back to my car (cuz I was so freaking tired from standing
for the last 6 hours), the coconut bra that Matt was currently wearing, and a
solemn promise (in writing) that Soundgarden would never break up. Chris
argued and raged and then begged and pleaded (on his knees... now doesn't
THAT paint a pretty picture?)... but I held firm to my demands, and
eventually he caved in. We quickly drew up the paperwork and signed it
all... Matt & Chris changed back into their regular clothes... Matt
reluctantly gave me his coconut bra... and I hopped on Chris' back. I pulled
his blue baseball cap off his head, and waving it around wildly I shouted
"Giddyup, rockboy!! My car is at least 4 blocks from this building, and if I
wanna make it home before sunrise... you better get yer butt in gear and get
me back to my ride!!" Then I leaned back, smacked him on said butt... and he
started walking towards the nearest exit. I whapped him on the head, and
told him to trot... which to his credit, he did. The ride back to my car was
magical, and I guarantee that when we arrived he was sweating ALOT more than
he ever had during a show. We again exchanged promises of my never breathing
a word about SG and hula hoops... and in return, SG would never break up.
Unfortunately, I was only able to hold out for a little over three months
before telling someone. That someone told someone else... and before I knew
it, the sordid tale got back to Susan. She immediately freaked out, because
although she was already aware of Chris & Matt's little Hawaiian-hula trysts
that had been going on for YEARS (not to mention Matt's coconut bra
fetish)... she didn't understand how one slightly-psychotic hootchie could
have found out such exact details about it. Chris and Matt both blamed one
another, and then blamed me... and I could spell out the whole sad story
here, but I've written too much already. Needless to say, they were furious
at me for not keeping up my end of the deal... so they broke up the band just
to spite me. *sigh* Oh damn my eyes!!! Anyway... that's the REAL reason
that Soundgarden broke up. I hope that it didn't scare any of y'all, and
that your dreams aren't haunted by thoughts of hoops and grass skirts
tonight. I also hope that none of you hold this against me and hate me
forever. (But can you really blame me for having to tell someone? ;-) And
on a final note... Chris has refused to play bingo with me anymore, because
he said that I slapped his butt too hard when he was giving me a ride back to
my car. Some people just hold grudges waaaay too long, y'know? :-p
    <kisskiss>
Shroom Girl, Mistress of the Soundgarden Hootchies.

- - Ummm... just kidding or something. Heheheheh... ;-) Sorry this was so
poorly written... I'm sleep deprived, and leaving for NOLA in a few hours.

Subject: Ty Cobb single

This afternoon I was in town and got the Ty Cobb single.
It's interesting, the Rhinosaur remix - THE STRAW THAT BROKE THE RHINO'S
BACK REMIX (cute title). It sounds just the same as the LP version order
wise (what I mean is that the song is the same, not like Dusty were the
order is changed) the major change is there is a zzzz effect to Chris's
vocals, the whole song seems to have it but it's really evident in the
vocals. The whole effect has changed it from a song which sounds like it's
sung effortlessly to one with more of a sound of strained vocals (I don't
mean overly strained, there is a difference) and just overall a heavier
song.

I hope some of that made sense keep in mind I am completely music
illiterate so maybe there is a name for the zzzzz effect over the top.

While I was in there I also picked up Motorvision I had been eyeing it off
for a while and knew it was in two shops there today one of them no longer
had it so I decided to buy it now rather than miss out, I have no idea to
it's difficulty to get but after seeing a Hater Cd and not getting it then
and having never seen one again I just thought I should get it.

Another thing I came home with was the Noise book simple because there was
a bookshop closing down the road and I knew that it was unlikely that I
could get it cheaper. I was going to get a hair cut on Saturday but I don't
think I cane afford to now.

Sorry for waffling once again but I hope someone makes sense of what I said
about the remix and gets something from it.

see some Soundgarden videos on Recovery since the only one they play when
they do is Burden in my Hand which is really good but we want some
different ones too so would it be possible for at least some of you out

Got the new Rolling Stone yesterday. In it, they had "the definitive
library of the 200 best albums ever made". So here I am, pretty much
agreeing with their selections as they go decade by decade. So far so
good. Then I turn the page to see the 90's. So here I am, gettin' excited
thinking that Superunknown would be a lock to be on it. So I look through it
and see PJ's "Ten" and "Live Through This" by Hole as well as Nirvana and
others. And then the article ends. No Superunknown. No Soundgarden.

I simply cannot understand why Superunknown was left out. Did Chris's
diatribes against RS have a part to play in this? Perhaps, but who knows.
I would hate to think so. But the fact that it was left out is such a
glaring omission on their part. I don't get it. That album changed me and
a lot of other people. It was a great fucking album. It should have been
on that list.

as many of these band members have said in the past, it's not like they
hang out with each other every night. i think someone in here posted some
comments from mc cready... i mean, i don't know what someone in another
band can tell me about what goes on in soundgarden? i mean, i work for a
software company in seattle, does that automatically mean i can give you
the inside scoop on what goes on at microsoft? no, it doesn't.

i'm sure those musicians who were fans of sg are as bummed about the
breakup as we are. but i'm not quite sure what kind of insight someone
who wasn't actually in soundgarden could give us, nor do i think any of
these bands would engage in idle gossip or chit chat about one another.

i think we need to listen to the band's words in their statement and not
look to other people to explain it to us. matt confirmed this in his
statement to us (sorry that you missed it) that there is nothing more than
what was said in the original 32-word "terse" (hiya andrea!) statement.

I doubt that CC will do a solo thing! I think that he will join another
band and Ben, Matt, and Kim will join other bands as well. I really cannot
see CC as a solo artist. But I can see Kim maybe as a lead in a band
playing his guitar like crazy, you know like Slash from G 'N R. Hey you
never know! Does anyone know if Ben, Matt or Kim know how to sing (well
enough to be a lead singer or whatever)? I wonder..... I think CC should
learn how to play more instruments if he does a solo thing. I was reading
an article about Trent Reznor (NIN) and it was saying how he knows how to
play many instruments, even the weird ones you'd think would never be heard
on a Metal album. I guess that is why NIN's music is so unique. Anyway, I
think knowing how to play different instruments if you only know one and
learning or maybe trying to learn to sing if you have never tried, if you
are in a band, can help you to expand your horizons. IT IS SO FUCKING
FRUSTRATED SITTING HERE WITH MY TAIL BETWEEN MY LEGS WAITING TO HERE FROM

That's because Rolling Stone is a piece of shit mag. Of course, they
wouldn't include Superunknown. It's probably not "hip" at the moment to
like Soundgarden, in public circles. To them, it doesn't matter that
Soundgarden's music has completely changed rock music as we know it.
Does anyone remember the Rolling Stone interview with Alice In Chains,
where the interviewer falsely announced that he saw needle marks on Layne
Staley's arms? That pretty much destroyed as credibility the magazine had
right there.

Subject: The big change
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

Well, it's been 13 months since I first started talking about how
great it would be if this list ran under Listserv, and today I find
out that MIT has Listserv (running on a *mainframe*, of all things).
All I had to do was ask if I could use it.

There will be some changes in procedure - you'll be able to sub/unsub
yourself and switch between digests and individual messages at will -
and some small things, like message headers and parts of the digest,
may look slightly different, but that's about it. Service should be
more reliable, especially for digest subscribers, since the daily
digests will be compiled and distributed automatically, regardless of
whether or not I'm around. Additionally, posting will be restricted to
subscribers only, so we won't have to deal with people who aren't on
the list.

Anyway, I hope to get the list set up in Listserv over the weekend and
have it running by early next week sometime, so I'll be sending out
more messages with all the new info you'll need in the next few days.

Pretty Noose (not in that order, but something like that)...it will be
replayed for those with Optus Vision Cable TV this Sunday morning...

More importantly, does anybody know of Rage here in Australia putting
together a Soundgarden special some time in the future? It would seem
fitting at the closure of the band for them to play all Soundgarden videos
as a tribute to the band, and they certainly have done it for other bands...

Jackhammer.

Hey all,

I just read this in Rolling Stone, so I thought you all might like to
take a look at it. :)

Rolling Stone: "Soundgarden Spiced: Info on the Break-up from a Reliable
Source" By I. M. Fullashit

Soundgarden, the metal-edged grunge rockers who led Seattle into the
grunge revolution, shocked the world on April 9th by suddenly and
inexplicably breaking up. Even though a terse 32 word note from A&M
records, their record company, described the split as mutual and amicable,
rumors began to surface that perhaps the break-up had been instigated by
other matters.
This reporter has recently interviewed a reliable source close to the
band and discovered something that will SHOCK you, if not HORRIFY you. It
has been revealed that Soundgarden's break-up actually arose from: THE
SPICE GIRLS!
"It all started when they were on a layover in London, coming back
from the Australian tour," Said the source close to the band, "Kim and
Ben have been getting in barfights a lot, ever since the Japanese leg of
the Superunknown tour, and this night, at first, seemed no different."
The difference was that Kim and Ben chose the wrong target for their
attack: The Spice Girls. Within moments, both musicians were laid out on
the barroom floor, unconscious. Chris and Matt immediately came to their
rescue.
"It was horrible," Says the source close to the band, "Chris jumped in
the save them and was knocked for a loop when the Spice Girls bounced their
tits on his head. Matt tried to throw a chair at them, but they started
singing that stupid "If you wanna be my lover" song and it incapacitated
him as well."
Within minutes, all the members of Soundgarden were knocked cold, and
thrown out the backdoor of the pub by their victorious enemies. When they
awoke, they turned on each other, blaming each other for the awful,
humiliating defeat. Apparently, this disagreement resulted in their
disbandment.
"It's really a shame," The source close to the band said, with a sad
frown, "I've been a roadie for them on tour since 'Ultramega OK' and I
never thought this could happen to them. The only thing I can say is to
warn other bands: Avoid the Spice Girls at all costs! They'll get you too,
if you aren't careful!"
Silver Management and A&M Records declined to comment. We'll keep you
updated as this story develops.

     (Hee hee. Just kidding. :)

Later,

Michael Apple
