This is strange, this feeling I have right now. =20

I feel humbled, I guess that's what it is.

I was shocked at SG's breakup, yet not grief-stricken like many of my =
fellow Sommsters were. Because deep down I knew that the music is still =
with us, and will ALWAYS be alive (I note now that Matt feels the same =
way).

But when reading Matt Cameron's letter, well, I realise that perhaps =
grief WAS in my heart all along, and just hadn't yet been released. =20

For now I really FEEL grief, in the purest sense of the word. Reading =
Matt's letter brought tears to my eyes and a lump to my =
throat...............as I type this I am actually crying. =20
{ironic, I am listening to Pearl Jam's "Smile" on my CD-Rom as I cry}

But I am also so glad that our Soundgarden guys' "love and respect for =
one another is probably deeper than it ever was" and they "are all =
brothers". As if the lump in my throat wasn't already aching, by the =
time I read that paragraph the tears really did start to flow.

Matt Cameron, I want to thank YOU from the bottom of my heart. For =
being so honest with us, for sharing your feelings. THAT is what has =
humbled me.

And I also thank you, Seth, who have brought all of us together. This =
mailing list has not just helped me gain a better knowledge of all =
things Soundgarden, but it has also given me many extremely close =
friends who, like Soundgarden's music, will be with me forever.

Thank you, Seth and Matt. I don't know who to thank more.....
Seth for delivering the words to those he felt deserving (all of us, he's
too kind), or Matt for actually telling us what's going on. I can't
believe he cares. Remember, there's a difference between thinking the
person tells the truth and believing the person who breathes it. I'm
somewhat rejuvinated. I really love the world that cares. It's nice to
know it still exists.
I, too, have been crying and bleeding my soul out. Soundgarden
made my life. Believe it or not, I am a NIN and Marylin Manson fan to
boot. Soundgarden was the only one band that taught me what beauty is. On
a side note, I recently bought a SG tee-shirt with the Pretty Noose
single on it. The reason that it was so significant is that I bought it
from a clearance rack for $4. No lie. I'm from Milwaukee, and that says a
lot. That low of a markdown meant only one thing..... no one was devoted
enough in the area of posuers to buy it and wear it with pride. No one,
except me. (I hadn't gotten it earlier because it was on the other side
of town that I went to go shopping for a change). I'm proud to be among
the few who care. EVERYONE ELSE HERE SHOULD BE TOO.
Raise your head. "Bow down." We were blessed. We are among the
few. I am proud to be a SG lover. As long as I live, SG lives. As long as
Seth is alive, SG lives. It's like a tome.

Think of it this way........ in a world in which things are
seldom finite, we have the pleasure of being able to have heard it all.

I love you guys, in the most platonic way possible. That is, I
don't want to "fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck you, fuck you...." ;)

Anyway... Cheers to all the SOMMSters who were up on #somms Friday night...

Me reconsiders the last coupla statements... Shit, I miss something...
Ehhh... I think it's the fact that I found a group of people who could
understand the whole SG break up thing... There was no talk of it, but the
fact there was a kindred spirit going on was a real comfort... The fact I
could at last say hi to sommsters like Shroom and Caryn, talk to them... I
just can't wait til graduation and I can fuck off to Seattle and fullfil my
role as 'future roomie' to Dena and Shroom... I think being held captive
sounds a lot less worse than it did... ;)

So cheers to Dena, Shroom, Caryn, Sabrina, Rosee, Thuggy, Geoff, Chris, Seth,
Toni, Vicki, Ben, and whoever the Hell I've missed out... It was a lot of
fun, but I have to say it was weird having everybody saying they were off to
bed when I was only up...

Subject: Things that make you go "Hmmm..."

I know this is straying a little off the subject of Soundgarden, but kind
of following up some of my earlier comments, did anyone see the premiere of
the new Foo Fighters video on 120 Minutes last night?
Alternative/Seattle/punk rock seems alive and kicking to me. A big
"Hmmm..." goes out to a certain motherfuckin' guitar magazine claiming that
"Alternative Music is Dead" and that we have nothin' but No Doubt and 311
to look forward to (Were they not also considered "alternative" as well?
Hmmm...)

And now for the least unlikely Soundgarden prediction:

The members of Soundgarden decide to get together for a farewell concert,
or better yet, a farewell tour that takes 2 years to complete and they end
up saying "Farewell" in some cities more than once - at least 3-4 concerts
in Seattle, of course. They stay broken up for 2-3 years afterward while
Chris tries to cross over into country music a bit as a solo artist. Then
they all get back together saying they have resolved whatever problems they
cited as the reason for the break-up. In showbiz this is known as the
"Judd Method" (yeah I'm talking Wynona and Naomi here!)

Peace y'all

Seth, I want to thank you for forwarding Matt's letter to the group. Seeing
letter come through really shows how much the band cared about what their
fans thought. As much of all you felt, the emotions got stirred up again,
but somehow this time it felt a lot better. On another note, I really find
it disheartening to see fellow SOMMsters bickering about "Who is
Soundgarden?" I really find this path of conversation quite distructive in
preserving the dignity of the band's accomplishments. Soundgarden became for
me (as many bands have done) a reminder to how wonderful the gift of music
is. I firmly believe that these guys will continue to produce great music
for us, but in different forms than we currently know. Anyway, there's my 2
cents that I seldom give...but felt compelled to write.

Hey SOMMSters
Thanks to Matt's message, I'm feeling a sense of closure. SG is still
my favorite band, and I'm still saddened by the split, but all good
things must end sometime. I've been celebrating the music for the past
week and it still rocks! :) God, you get to feeling so close to a band
because they're the ones that you turn to at a rough time. But I can
still put on Let Me Drown, or Limo Wreck, or Slaves & Bulldozers, or
Flower and feel better. That's powerful stuff. Or any of the songs to
enhance a good mood, but especially Bleed Together. It gets me out of
bed in the mornings (and is responsible for my speeding on highways!).
So thanks to the guys for being such a major part of my life. Rock on!

I was happy to see that they (or at least Matt) reads the list...I wish
them all luck in any future endeavors. We may never know why they split,
but who cares...we still have plenty of great music to listen to.

Whoever thinks Chris Cornell IS Soundgarden...boy are you
disillusioned...he has a great voice and he writes some great stuff, but
Jesus Christ Pose is nothing without Matt's drumming, Ben's bass, and Kim's
guitar. And all of them wrote it. And that's just one of *many*. Wake up

Does anyone out there have the 7-7 Lollapalooza show on tape/CD? I was

this is from houston in 1992, the infamous Unicorn Ballroom show (of
Kozik poster fame), pearl jam opened for soundgarden. the pearl
jam show exists on video (way cool show, shit quality tape, lots of
heads in the way), but the sg show does not exist, to the best of our
knowledge. neither does the encore, unfortunately. ;-(

this footage was taped by mtv, hence the reason it is from the mtv web
site. ;-) mtv masters rarely, if ever, make it out of the vault, and what
usually makes it out is uncut interview footage, not live performance
stuff, for the obvious reason that it has more of a value.

I was very moved by Matt's message. Thank you Matt for not only caring
enough about how we feel to read the digest, but for caring enough about
us to write such a gentle, kind note. My heart just felt so full as I
read, and he even mentioned Chicago! And apparently HE doesn't think its
so awful for people to speculate about the future plans of the guys,
since he says he'll keep Seth informed of his so he can pass them on to
us. Matt's message just reconfirmed for me the reasons I love(d)
Soundgarden.

Moon Druid wrote:

The thing is, for me and for alot of us I think, there is and always has
been so much more than just the music. Sure the music is what perked up
my ears that first time, but I was also drawn to the presence and
attitude of the band, from that very first video (Loud Love). There was
something more to them, something totally different and I was hopelessly
hooked from then on. I've loved alot of different bands for their music,
but I have never felt such an identification and closeness with any
other band like I have with Soundgarden. I've always felt that
Soundgarden were very close to their roots. They remembered what it felt
like to be a fan, and never felt that they were any better or more
important than any of us. I truly care about them as people, and feel
that they have shown us more of themselves as real people than most
performers ever do. I mean these are guys I baked pumpkin bread for, and
Shroom gave her ankle bracelet to (well, that was only Chris, but still)
and bunches of us have sent birthday cards, etc. to.

From the beginning being a Soundgarden fan was something truly special
and unique. We may feel that some of that uniqueness has been taken away
because of the more recent popularity, but I don't think the pseudo-fans
ever really "got it", so they don't really matter anyway. Until I found
this list I didn't know any other Soundgarden fans. Waiting in line for
concert tickets was always a treat, because I would get to meet others
who at the very least knew who Soundgarden was, and usually were as
enthusiastic as I was to be meeting others who felt as they did about
this great band. My husband was amazed at "Sommsfest" in Chicago - how
we all seemed to know each other immediately even though we had never
met. Being a Soundgarden fan has meant a great deal to me, and has been
a part of my daily life for well over 7 years. Its great that we'll
always have the music, but I'm really going to miss alot of other things
about being a Soundgarden fan. And these are the things I find myself
still getting weepy over. Thank God the list isn't going down. I wonder
how many of us, almost immediately after the initial shock of the news
washed over us, thought "Oh no, what about the list?". Most of us have
found a comaraderie here that we were unable to find in our everyday
lives, because so few people in our *real* lives share the same devotion
to Soundgarden. Thanks again, Seth, for keeping this forum open.

And thanks again to you, Matt. You truly made my day.

Subject: Matt's post

've never posted before, but I've been lurking for many months now. Matt's
post has moved me to write for the first time. I'd seen in several posts
that he followed SOMMS but I never in a million years expected him to
contribute, although hindsight tells me I probably should have. Thank you,
Matt, for your time and your words - they are a comfort. Please do keep us
posted - most of us are all very interested in everyone's future direction.

I've been a fan since Louder than Love (which immediately caused me to get
Ultramega OK, and the EP's). SG's music probably saved my sanity (if not my
life) during my divorce three years ago simply by giving me incredible music
and forceful lyrics that came painfully close to describing how I was feeling
at any given moment. I was lucky enough to see SG live many times (I was
always the quiet one as close as I could get without being mauled - which
didn't always work). I don't want to drag this out any longer than necessary
- - suffice it to say that I've probably been your average "obsessed" fan. But
believe me - I've always been in it for the MUSIC. And that's what I'm going
to miss the most. Besides, I'm on Shroomy's picture list, so I get my daily
dose of band/individual pics anyway. ;>)

Yes, I felt absolutely levelled (is this irrational? - I guess not judging by
the list members' reactions) by the news on April 9. Of course, the fact
that I knew all you SOMMS guys were as depressed about the breakup as I was
seemed to help a little (as opposed to nobody I know personally giving a shit
- - or understanding that I did). And real life quickly intruded and demanded
my attention, so I think I'm through mourning for the loss of a band that
gave me twelve years of pleasure (also the occasional therapeutic insight
and an acceptable method of expressing some massive hostility). I'm sorry
for all the SOMMsters that never got to seem them live. Life has an
incredible way of never turning out like you expect, and you may very well
get an opportunity later. And if you don't, again I apologize, but we still
have the music.

Anyway, what I really want to say is "Thanks, guys! You've touched a chord
in so many more people than you can ever know. We're all really glad you
were together as long as you were, and really sad to see you go, but we have
faith that you're all moving on to interesting things that, hopefully, we can
all share again. Be healthy, be happy."

And the same to all the list members - be healthy, be happy!

the song 'blind dogs' was included on the _basketball diaries_
soundtrack (and played through the end credits, I think). it was also
performed live by the band during their time on pearl jam's 'self
pollution radio' broadcast. the bootleg of that song is worth hearing.
be sure to check out steve's soundgarden discog for the facts/details.
just out of interest, 'blind dogs' went through a number of different
incarnations (re: demo recordings) before the final version was released.
apparantly no-one in the band felt the original demos were interesting
enough to put on a record. I, for one, really like the finished product.

stuck with me - he was just the most genuine nice guy, standing around and
just hanging out with us (and wondering where seth was ;-) Anyway, his post
has completely confirmed if not strengthened that feeling for me....In a
time of real darkness for this list, Matt chose on his own, to reach out to
the grieving fans and let us hear directly from one of them - something he
certainly did not have to do, but did because he obviously cares...THANK YOU
MATT....

on one hand, it made me smile...on the other hand, it made me cry again...i
think after the first few days i may have put myself in denial and pretended
that this was all a dream ...someone would pinch me and then we would all
soon be discussing the tracks on the new CD....hearing right from the source
brought me back into reality again and has forced me to face that this list
will never talk about SG songs that will never be created....

So I did something today to make myself feel better....I have been wanting
to send a gift to Erin and Silver Mgmt and SG, but wasnt sure
what...Something to just show my appreciation for all they have done for us
and for my life...I didnt want to send flowers cuz they die, or candy
because it gets eaten, etc. I wanted to send something that would last and
last, something enduring in this time of ending....So today, I sent a big
beautiful Cactus from the desert ...it blooms white flowers once a year and
is supposed to live for hundreds of years....whoever thinks that is stupid, I
don't care....it was something that i wanted and needed to do...and i hope
they enjoy it for at least as long as i have loved SG....

Subject: A Reflection on what Soundgarden was to me.

Date sent: 21-APR-1997 21:04:13

Hi, all,

Five months ago, I was on the list for a couple controversial weeks,
before I asked to be signed off to avoid a conflict. I made a lot of
friends on the list, but I also generated a lot of hostility. But, in
light of current developments, I hope we can put the past behind us and
share our memories of Soundgarden, and what it meant to us.
For the past couple of days, I've checked over the SOMMS archive and
read everyone's anger, shock, and depression at the disbanding of our
favorite band. I can understand your reactions completely. I too, am
deeply affected by Soundgarden's disbanding and I still haven't completely
recovered from the shock.
When I first heard Soundgarden, back in 1991, it changed my life.
Before them, I was an angry, bitter teenager who was constantly running
into trouble in school, with my parents, and with the police. But when I
listened to Soundgarden, I heard people who were echoing a lot of the anger
and depression I felt. Finally, here was something that understood me.
Listening to "Badmotorfinger" made me realize that I wasn't the only
person in the world who was constantly having dirt kicked in their face.
It was okay to be unpopular, and it was okay to feel hurt.
Now, six years later, I'm a dean's list English major, I'm a published
author, and, most importantly, I am a better person. I can never thank
Soundgarden enough for helping me when I needed it most. They understood
me when no one else did.

If anyone on the list is still feeling really depressed about the band
, I suggest you do what I did to recover. For my final paper for my short
fiction class, I wrote a short story called "Black Days", which was about a
college student getting over the breakup. It really helped me focus my
anger and depression and do something constructive with it.

     Soundgarden will never die.

Later,

Michael Apple

either he didnt listen at the right time, or the tribute consisted of nothing
more than a mention of the breakup a few times and 2 songs spread way apart,
JCP, and Bleed Together<--good song! It also had a hilarious interview with
Henry Rollins in which Henry tells of how in his "world" Bush would be soup
bowls and spice girls would be in cages begging for bowls of meat! and so on
(LOL sorry ;)....ya gotta love Henry, his philosophy on life is pretty
interesting.....

Well I swore to Seth our of respect for him I wouldnt bash other bands ever

Does anyone know if that was the extent of the "big tribute", or was there

Subject: make no mistake I am what you make me...

I don't know if this is going to be worthwhile or even interesting
to the majority of list members. in fact, I stole the idea from another
list (of sorts), so at least I can plead ignorance if it doesn't work. I
just hope that if we can start concentrating on the music the hurt will go
away. probably a naive hope in the short term (even considering matt's
emotional post to the list and the closure it seems to have afforded some
list members), but a hope all the same.

for the next couple of weeks I'm going to parallel sgi.net's song
of the month by posting my own reviews of soundgarden songs (weekly, if I
can motivate myself). these reviews may not be overly engaging for older
listers as I've probably said a lot of this before, but maybe newer
sommsters will get something out of my various ramblings. there is also
the chance that other listers will take the bait and give their own
thoughts on other songs. anyway, I'll try and stick to some sort of
formula for each song (background/lyrics/music) so that there is at least
some semblance of direction (I'm known for long-windedness). so shut me
up if it gets too boring.

my first choice for review is 'karaoke'; chosen primarily because
it was one of the last songs ever recorded by the band, but also because
it is a pretty interesting song in it's own right. before I go any
further, here is the small print - 6:01; lyrics/music by chris cornell;
produced by chris, matt cameron and adam kasper; mixed by chris and adam;
recorded at studio litho. a slight difference (perhaps too trivial to
mention, but you know me) between this song and those included on _down on
the upside_ is that adam was assisted in engineering 'karaoke' by matt
bayles, not sam hoftedt of _dotu_ fame. 'karaoke' made its first
appearance on the _launch_ cd-rom in august '96, and was subsequently
included as a b-side on the australian and european release of 'burden in
my hand' roughly one month later. the song was then included on the
australian re-release of _dotu_.

background - interestingly, 'karaoke' was mentioned by members of
soundgarden as a possible track for _dotu_ as early as february '96,
almost four months before the release of that record (making me look the
fool, since this song was probably one of the very first songs demoed and
recorded during the _dotu_ sessions). chris gives some indication as to
the song's subject matter in rolling stone magazine (feb.'96), noting that
"it's about how loads of bands are imitating something that already
exists...following a formula is what seems to be successful right now."
kim concurs, contending that "it seemed like there was a real cool,
aggressive shake-up in rock, and really quickly they homogenized it and
repackaged it...when pearl jam ceased making videos, they got all these
second-rate, b-grade pearl jams to make videos...it's all top 40 and
probably won't exist a year from now. there are only so many teenagers and
limited funds and resources to sustain the careers of all these bands"
(spin '96).

going on previous interviews, I would assume that both ben and
matt agree with the above sentiment. powerful and original music doesn't
come in a can, and I believe that all four members of soundgarden regarded
"copycat" bands with equal amounts of distaste and enmity. soundgarden
also respected greatly the contribution of bands such as nirvana and pearl
jam (among others), and would understandably be angered by those who would
try to copy or imitate their creative successes. the only balancing factor
was that while chris, kim and matt were prepared to dump on "butt rock"
and "hair farmer" bands such as poison and warrant all day long, they were
unwilling to do the same to their contemporaries (at least most of the
time this was true) in public. they would make reference to copycat bands
but would avoid naming them individually, probably much to the chagrin of
their interviewer (nothing like a little controversy, eh?). we'll never
know exactly who they included in this group, but it doesn't take much
thought to draw up a short list.

which begs the question: why wasn't 'karaoke' included on _dotu_?
no reason has ever been given by the band, but the simplest reason I can
come up with is because it would have seemed out of place on the record.
influenced more by art than music (I'm sure you've all noticed the liner
artwork for _dotu_), soundgarden were very much aware of the impact of
sequencing - the process of ordering the final tracks on a given record.
my best bet is that 'karaoke' would have disturbed the overall story or
feel of _dotu_, but more on that as I warm up.

lyrics - well, if you don't know what chris is singing about on
'karaoke' by now, you must have been skim reading. and badly :) the lyrics
are as follows:

	Gonna shake your head
     	Gonna shake and spin
Gonna pick it up abed with something new

First I heard it in my car
Then I saw it on the set
     	It's nothin' I can't do
     	It's nothin' I can't lick
     	Oh, yeah

You can hear it in the air
You can feel it in your bones
You can sing it in your head
You can wear it on your clothes
     	Oh, yeah
You can steal it if you dare
Just might get you where you're goin'

     	I'm just a regular man
     	Now I'm a regular mess
     	Doesn't matter how you dress
     	Doesn't matter how you fit
     	Oh, yeah

Chorus (you can hear it in the air...)

     	I'm gonna show you someday

     	Chorus

You can hear it in the air
You can feel it in your bones
You can have it for your own
May not miss you when your gone.

nothing too difficult to follow there, although thanks to vikki
anselmo I now know what the word "abed" means (an adverb meaning 'in
bed'). the words are obviously a commentary on musicians who would claim
an existing sound as their own; who would reproduce it with an eye to
similar success. I think some of the lyrics also confront the packaging
and homogonisation of the musical form by record companies, the media or
the mass market that steamed kim so much, especially lines like "you can
wear it on your clothes". interesting to me is the line "then I saw it on
the set"; I'm guessing that chris is talking about the dreaded music
video, which is somewhat intriguing because back in the dark ages (before
I was born) it wasn't a music video that sold your records, it was the
strength of the song or music itself.

also of note is the similarity between 'karaoke's' lyric structure
and that of 'fourth of july'. I personally find more than one parallel
(in form, not sentiment) between "first I heard it in my car, then I saw
it on the set" and "and I heard it in the wind, then I saw it in the sky".
the chorus of karaoke is also kind of similar - "you can hear it in the
air, you can feel it in your bones". which makes me think that in in order
to criticise copycat bands, chris has copied his *own* lyrics. that would
show a good sense for satire. but then again, maybe he just liked how the
words sounded together, and the resemblance to 'fourth of july' was only
passing and only borne of coincidence. two other points worth noting: 1.
the "oh yeah" refrain is pretty funny if you think about it (surely this
is chris' best attempt at pop lyrics yet?); and 2. I have *no* idea what
"I'm gonna show you someday" means. any thoughts would be appreciated.

music - musically, 'karaoke' is more than interesting. in fact,
it can get down right absorbing if you spend too much time listening to it
through headphones :) the length of the song is interesting, in that the
song, as a sometimes commentary on copycat three-minute pop, runs for
roughly six minutes (a comment in itself?). it is obvious that the band
spent some time with this song, in constructing and layering its various
sections. the vocals are heavily altered for the most part, using varying
amounts of reverb and muffling. chris has also done multiple takes on
some of the lyrics, making his words almost jump out of the speakers (his
shriek of "it's nothin' I can't lick" comes to mind). also note the the
whispered lyrics during "I'm gonna show you someday". I don't think there
are more than two or three guitar tracks, in addition to, of course, ben's
bass. from the feel of the song, I would guess that chris definitely
played one of the guitar tracks.

there appears to be a real dichotomy or divide present in
'karaoke'. the introductory thirty seconds of noise seem to be at odds
with the general sound (although not mood) of the song's main section.
since I have no experience in playing the guitar I don't know if the
riffing is difficult, but I place it's speed somewhere above that featured
in 'jesus christ pose', so I would guess yes. you can also draw a
comparison to 'karaoke's' intro/outro and the chorus of 'ty cobb' or the
verse of 'an unkind'; not much movement on the fretboard. from a drumming
standpoint, the intro is at the same time extremely difficult and fuckin'
cool :) mirrored by the sixty second outro, I'm not entirely sure how
matt pulls off all those rolls and crashes. at any rate, I think that for
once all four guys were working just as hard on their instrument as the
next guy (only halfway joking). the opening and closing of 'karaoke', in a
word, is furious.

but as frantic as these parts are (the most frantic since 'circle
of power' in my estimation), they clash with what I would describe as the
laid-back swing of the song itself. yes, there is definitely an underlying
dirtiness to the song's middle, and yes chris' vocals are by no means
laid-back. but I would argue that the simple groove and, dare I say it,
bounce of the chorus and verse sections are far less frenzied as the
song's front and back. their mood, while confrontational, lack in musical
terms the sheer attack of the intro and outro. kind of like the difference
between 'jcp' and 'outshined' in many ways. both dark, but one more angry
than the other. this was probably by design; if chris wanted to criticise
unoriginal music, what better way than to write a halfway cheesy and
certainly simple riff?

the bridge takes the song nearer to its conclusion, leading
directly into the final chorus. from memory there is no lead break or even
much noodling from kim. the last chorus starts out low and soft, but soon
breaks its own restraints (chris' vocals here are amazing, considering our
wonder over his throat troubles/treatment of same) and hurtles headlong
into the final breakdown, which as I mentioned before doesn't let go for
another whole minute. I am curious as to the decision to tack these noisy
sections onto the beginning and end of the song; are they there to
challenge those who would steal from soundgarden or is are they just a
plain statement of fact, this is what we can do, steal it if you can?
interesting to me is that the cacophony they raise is somewhat the
antithesis of their own sound (if you can narrow it down. which you
probably can't or shouldn't), that sludgy/curdling world that was at the
core of their sound and what attracted most of us to their music.

so, a pretty good song. why didn't it make it onto a record
instead of ending up as a b-side? I think that in terms of both lyrics
and music it wouldn't have seemed right. I would even go so far as to say
that it was discarded as a likely inclusion on _dotu_ somewhere in the
middle of recording (the recording discrepancies point to a song that was
"fixed" after _dotu_ was completed). it was obviously a song they wanted
to release (evidenced by it's many formats), so I imagine it just didn't
suit the overall mood of the record. musically I can't see where it would
have gone. lyrically I can't imagine it on there. from 'pretty noose' to
'never named', from 'boot camp' to 'never the machine forever' there is
one defining lyrical element. all the songs are very personal, except
maybe 'no attention' and 'ty cobb' (at least I imagine they are), and
'karaoke' doesn't seem to hold that same element. it's from the heart,
but it doesn't have heart in it. that probably sounds dumb, but that's
the best way I can describe the difference. 'karaoke' is more brain than
heart, I guess. so instead of hearing it out of context or tampering with
the balance of the record, it ended up coming out under its own power. and
for those of us who collect anything with "soundgarden" stamped on it, I
guess that doesn't matter a bit ;)

well, that's that. justin's soundgarden songbook, chapter one is
finished <looking at the clock on the wall>. I hope that was worth your
time and effort. if not, let me know and I'll make the next one shorter.
no really, I will :)

Hi there,

Well, I dont think your choice of a gift was stupid at all, and neither

respect for him for having the heart to do that for us. Wow, what a guy! His

Subject: The gifts they gave

I have been giving the gifts thread some thought over the past few days
and I have come up with several.
The first gift SG gave to me was their music. When I first heard BMF I
had "been away" from music for quite a while. Had given up on it, didn't
buy CD's or go to concerts anymore. But Soundgarden's music picked me up by
my ears.....shook the cobwebs out and made me want to hear music again.
The second gift was this list. The very first day I went online(9/95) I
looked up Soundgarden and came across Seth's page. I joined the mailing
list the next week. I have learned so much, traded for lots of music and
videos and most of all made many friends....not just cyperpals but friends
in the true sense and for them I am grateful.
The third gift Soundgarden gave me was going to see them in Seattle in
June. It was a huge hurdle for me. I had never traveled alone, gone to a
concert by myself, stayed in a hotel on my own. I wanted to go so bad I
overcame many fears(flying to name one)to go to Seattle. And I had such a
good time I could and would do it again.
The fourth gift Soundgarden gave to me are many many great memories that
have a great soundtrack to go with them. The weekend of November 8th,9th
and 10th are stored right up there in the top memory bank as a wonderful
life experience. From meeting the band, to hearing them play like their
hearts were on fire Sunday, to dancing a joyous dance with my fellow
sommsters, to seeing my new friends in their jammies sitting around my
kitchen table drinking coffee and talking SG!
It hasn't been just a band.....it has been an adventure! Thanks Kim,
Chris, Matt and Ben. You guys give hell of alot better gifts than the
myrrh, frankincense and gold crap! And a special thanks to Matt for the
note...did I mention before that I am a HUGE Matt fan and he is the cutest,
best drummer and looks really great in his panties!! :))) (please
disregard those sucking sounds you just heard -thank you) toni
