So I guess I was one of the lucky ones....I saw the bands many times (5
times on the last tour) including hanging out with them at two of the
shows in Phoenix and Los Angeles; And I worked with them professionally.
They are great guys and I can't really understand the reason to be sad
to the point of (to quote another) 'throwing up'. You know they will all
do solo stuff. What is the alternative? them turning into The Eagles
and giving knowing when to retire - I say props to them for knowing when
to say goodbye...gracefully...

Second's always the winner for me. The first time I hear it, I either
hate it or am able to find all the flaws that I can. The second time, I
start to love it.

Wierd... those have always been favorites of mine (save Switch Opens). I
heard those right away. But personally, I like music that's really
layered. The majority of those songs are layerd.

I really don't think so. Besides... they've got pretty conflicting music
styles. Cantrell still has a lot of Diamond Lie in him, and that's
something that Cornell has always been against.

FYI - Diamond Lie is the original AIC... DL was a glam metal band. If
you have sap, the pictures that the guys are pissing on are their
pictures from Diamond Lie.

Who did Waiting For the Sun originally? And BTW - it's on Waiting on the
Upside... by Snow Recordings. WOTU is a bootleg from the last Lolla
concert. I know that I've said a lot about it, so here's all the info
about Waiting On the Upside...

Tracks:
1. Spoonman
2. Searching With My Good Eye Closed (listed as Searching With My Eye
Closed)
3. Let Me Drown (listed as Drown)
4. Waiting For the Sun
5. Pretty Noose
6. My Wave
7. Ty Cobb
8. Fell On Black Days
9. Rusty Cage
10. Black Hole Sun [solo version] (listed as Black Hole Sun [slow
version])
11. Outshined
12. Mailman
13. Jesus Christ Pose
(Recorded at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater, Irvine, CA, 8/3/96)
14. Interview/Down On the Upside
(Recorded in Seattle, Wa before the release of their new album in 96)

Recording Quality: A (an actual A, this was done well)

Does anybody know if, on the Interview with Mr. Bunchy Pants, there was
a person with a slightly Balkan or Swede accent? That's the accent on
this interview, and I'm trying to figure if Snow Recording spliced it
in.

Glasgow Barrowlands, last year... Fucking amazing! It was the only pre-BMF
track they aired that night, and it was the closing song... Alas, no Jesus
Christ Pose, but Full On Kevin's Mom made up for it... I couldn't believe
they played it - It's the one thing I remember clearly in the concert, no
blurs, no memory lapses, just SG breaking into Full On Kevin's Mom, a confused
look on the majority of faces around me, and a sixty mile smile planted on
mine... Fuck yeah...

I am a wounded soul since the breakup of Soundgarden, but I've been
"in the business" at various levels long enough to understand how most
groups just can't stay together. The ones who do end up doing the same
old crap over and over (like Aerosmith, Rush, The Stones, etc.), so
it's usually for the best musically speaking when the members of good
groups go out and mingle with other good musicians-- keeps the juices
     flowing.

I'd expect the SG guys to wind up in other great bands fairly soon.

Yea, cool. I will respond to this.....

Soundgarden gave me the desire to play hard rock guitar, which I love.
Soundgarden gave me the best fucking music I ever heard.
Soundgarden gave me an empowerment, a spiritual healing, something
like that. Its hard to describe.
Chris I think would love to be alone after being hounded by media
and fans all the time...a chance to be alone is probably heaven
for him.
No, my dear Kathie, (who btw, is a big sweetie and *very* devoted SG fan ;),
you dont have to feel guilty of not wanting to hang with
those people you cant relate to, People who could never understand
SG or want to, or care.

Other people
are ok and a part of life ya know,
but wouldnt it be great if they
felt like you did? Thats why I try to
convert people to SG hee hee...so we
can relate better, so they can experience
them...some theres hope for,
some never. so far, Im working on 3.

As for me Kathie, Im sick of being alone, of being
opressed by my jealous, controlling man,
Its time to ROCK!

I have an idea for a thread. What *specific* gift has Soundgarden or one
or more of its members given you. I don't mean the gift of wonderful
music, I mean something specific.

For me the gift came from Chris. I have a personality very much like his
and I've always felt guilty about my reluctance to be a "social
butterfly". My mother criticized me for wanting to spend time alone in
my room reading and my husband has accused me in the past of being
antisocial when I didn't want to go to parties or something with a bunch
of people I didn't know (his friends or work buddies). I used to think
there must be something wrong with me because I really have no desire to
be buddy-buddy with all my neighbors. Then I got into Soundgarden and
started learning about Chris and his acceptance of his reclusiveness.
And the more I learned about him, the more I came to accept my own
introverted personality. I realized that I'm not anti-social, but have a
need for space and solitude. Now when I feel pressured to do something
that just doesn't feel right I remind myself of Chris and it helps me
feel OK about being the way I am. So in many ways Soundgarden has really
helped me like myself better.

Anybody else want to share a Soundgarden *gift*?

um...same here ;) really, kathie just took the words out of my mouth.
although i never actually felt guilty because of my lack of human
interaction...i enjoy it far too much. in those times of seclusion, when
there's just me and a stereo i am more grateful than ever to have that
incredible music to fill my time. and then there are chris' lyrics, a guy
who just GETS IT when no one else quite does.

AntiDog, I couldn't agree with you more. Alas, my first SG concerts were to
be my last, but I am SO GRATEFUL that I was among the privileged few who got
to meet the band in Chicago. I think about the experience now, and I can't
help but wonder what was really going on in the boys' heads at the time.

Kim had his family backstage with him; he introduced his dad to the raving
crowd. They all seemed quite happy. Perhaps one of the reasons we were so
blessed to have had this opportunity was because they knew it was the last
tour? Maybe not "knew", but "felt"...

I agree that they owe nothing to their fans as far as an explanation, but it
seems that for those of us who saw them this last tour (and everyone else
for that matter), it feels like a premature death, one that leaves us
shaking our heads, asking "Why?"

Looking forward to the future,

Just being alive is gift enough for me. These guys are so incredibly

Its really kind of sad when you get hounded for being yourself. Maybe if
more people would listen to their own hearts and follow their own dreams
they would a much happier person and not down on someone for being able
to be who they want to be and not who someone else thinks they should
be.

As I've said before, knowing that Chris seems to like being alone, I've
often wondered how long he would want to be in the kind of spotlight
that being in Soundgarden put him in.

Not everyone has to be around people all the time. And if you feel that
Soundgarden has done more for you than some people you know will ever
do, then thats how you feel and you damn sure dont have to explain that
to anyone and I do mean ANYONE. Maybe I'm wrong maybe I'm not, who
knows. Its an individual decision. What works for some does not work for
others.

Maybe I love to much??????

From: Skyegarden@aol.com
Subject: 1993 Guitar World article...

I was just checking the list of articles on the page today, and I saw this
one wasn't there... and Lisa, you can possible use it for your report...
I'm afraid the cover fell off of the magazine so I am not sure what the date
on it was, but that it's 1993 I'm pretty sure of--if this helps at all
Nirvana was on the cover. And if you do have it already.... well.... then I'm
dumb.

Singers

Guitar World: You've been on the road with Guns N' Roses, off and on, for
some time now. Is touring with them as chaotic as it looks?

Chris Cornell: Not really--on an average we play two shows a week with Guns
N' Roses. They don't like to play that much and they lose a lot of money.
We could go do out own shows I suppose, but I don't really want to. [laughs]
I'd rather do some writing. It's kind of like a vacation, just stating in my
room, writing some songs. I haven't really done anything else the whole time
we've been touring. I don't really like touring around Europe; it's kind of
boring. You can drink and then go look at something. [laughs] If I stay in
my room and write songs, it's like I'm at home. The only way I can tell that
I'm not home is if I look out the window.

GW: Has touring quit being fun for you yet?

CC: You mean, "Has it started being fun?" It hasn't been that hard this time
out. It hasn't been as hard as the Louder Than Love tour. I think you get
used to it. We used to do 17 shows in a row; you can't really do that
anymore when you're headlining. As it's ended up, we get a week off at home
every six or seven weeks, which is really cool. That's the thing that keeps
it from being a complete drag. But you can't get into being at home because
you don't remember what to do when you're there. I usually drink a lot when
I'm home every day, because I don't drink when I'm on tour. As long as I
don't drive, it's not too stupid. I don't try to solve the world's problems
when I'm drunk, either. Driving and solving the world's problems when you're
drunk--those things don't work. It's like you're waking up at four in the
morning, vomitimg, trying to remember how it was you discovered the cure for
AIDS... "What was that I said...bleeaagghh!!" [laughs]

GW: In the issue of RIP magazine that had you on the cover, editor Lonn
Friend made a statement that Seattle has more herion users per capita than
any other city in the United States. Where did he come up with that?

CC: Part of it might be because Andy Wood died from a drug overdose, and Lonn
was a really big Mother Love Bone fan; that really bummed him out, big time.
Then there's all the rumors about the guys in Mudhoney and Nirvana and all
that shit. In that interview I was basically saying I don't do drugs, but
that doesn't mean I'm this together, well-adjusted rock star guy, because
that's not true; I'm as fucked up as anybody. I don't do drugs, it's as
simple as that. Maybe Lonn was trying to understand why other people did
it. To me, it's a relatively clean scene compared to some.
I think the other point to be made is that I don't believe musicians
and rock stars have any kind of responsibility to be role models for anybody.
The only responsibility they have it to be true to what they're doing
artistically and not use any kind of production or packaging techniques to
fool people into buying records, like Milli Vanilli. To me, those guys are
way worse than somebody whose idol is on drugs. I don't think any celebrity
is responsible for setting an example to young people. If you're looking for
role models, maybe you should be into Michael Jordan because he seems to be
into being one.

GW: Let's talk about the worldwide pay-per-view cable broadcast Soundgarden
performed with Guns N' Roses in Paris. That was some serious exposure.

CC: No shit! But those people aren't running out to buy our records, though.
If they were, we'd be selling millions of records, and it's obvious we're
not. It's just another inch inside the door. I think that's how bands with
longevity end up doing it.  It's kind of like what the Cure did in the U.S.;
U2 did the same thing. For Soundgarden, that's all it is, those kind of
tours and playing in front of an audience that isn't ours.

GW: A&M is planning to re-release Temple Of The Dog and treat it as a
brand-new album.

CC: Everyone was paranoid when we first released Temple. It was more of a
commercial record than Soundgarden's next record was going to be, and we
didn't want to cheapen it by releasing it as members of this band and that
band. It was before Pearl Jam had anything out, and no one really knew who
they were. No one really wanted to stick their necks out and push Temple.
It was more "Let's throw it out there."

GW: It doesn't hurt that both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam are selling and doing
so well.

CC: Yeah, now it's not as much of a risk. Both bands have gotten all this
exposure, so no one's gonna mistake it for something other than what it is.
No one's going to say, "That's Chris Cornell's new band." Temple is a thing
we did together, it should be cool.

GW: Another record coming out soon, the Singles soundtrack featuring Pearl
Jam, Soundgarden and your solo track, "Seasons" should do really well, too.

CC: I hope so. The timing seems right.

GW: It was rumored that you wrote "Seasons" and some other songs as a joke
using fictional titles Jeff Ament [Pearl Jam] created for an album used in
the movie.

CC: I just did it as a suprise for Cameron [Crowe, the films director]. I
did it partly because I had always wanted to do that--write down ten titles
on a piece of paper and make an album based on those titles. One day when I
was on the movie set, I saw the cassette lying there with the titles on it.
It was the Cliff Poncier fictitious solo tape, and I thought it would be
really fun to whip out some quick four-track shit and make this totally
influenced by the titles and my interpretation of the vibe of what solo tapes
are like. Solo tapes usually have lame production and a lot of acoustic
shit, and softer, more inside views of whoever's writing it.

GW: You could have a career on the coffee house circuit as a solo act with
those songs.

CC: [laughs] I'm too shitty of a guitar player to do that.

GW: You also contributed music to the film's score.

CC: Yeah, but I don't know how much of it they used.

GW: You didn't collaborate with [the Replacements'] Paul Westerberg, who
composed the movie's score, did you?

CC: No, I just gave them a couple pieces of music. I'm not really sure how
much Westerberg did, either. It was fun, though.

GW: Screaming Life has now been reissued as part of the Sub Pop Classics
series. Does it feel strange to have enough popular history to warrant a
reissue?

CC: As long as they pay us for it [laughs] ...it's fine! I don't know how I
feel. I'm not the kind of guy who gloats much on the history of what I've
done and what the band has done. That kind of thing scares me. When you
start thinking about that, the future kind of gets away from you. To have
that kind of history, it's hard to look back and think, "Wow, we really
accomplished a lot," because I've never been suprised by our success or
anything we've ever done. It all sort of makes sense, and happened the way I
figured it would. There hasn't been any overnight successes, really.
Everything's been slow and pragmatic. I have no clue as to the magnitude of
what our history is, the listening audience or how we're percieved or how I'm
percieved. I'm pretty removed from it.

GW: Whichi seems strange, given that you're in the eye of the hurricane, so
to speak.

CC: It's impossible to have that perspective. I suppose I could go out and
listen to the fans, and hear what they think and how they react. Maybe I
could get a better idea of what we've done. I know there are a lot of fans
we've influenced and a lot of rock stars we've influenced. But it's a thing
you can never measure in terms of impact. Even if it is a big impact, you
can never count on being recognized for it. I know that some day, after this
Seattle scene thing is just completely dead and buried and the most unhip
thing in the world--which will happen--at some point in my forties, there's
gonna be a resurgence and they're going to start playing all our old videos
again. And it'll look like something from the Fifties. [laughs] Then there's
gonna be some new band that sounds kinda like we did, like what The Black
Crowes are to the Stones and the Faces. That will be cool. Then we'll
really know if we had any kind of impact. As far as what the Encyclopedia of
Rock N' Roll will say about us in the year 2010... are we even going to be
mentioned, or are we gonna be listed as one of the forerunners of this big
huge Seattle scene? Or will they just put Nirvana in? Or will they just
blow the whole thing off and it will continue to be Jimi Hendrix and Heart
and Queensryche? [laughs] I want to be successful, and I want to think what
we're doing is worthwhile; otherwise you have to start questioning why you
bother doing it. But I don't wanna be crammed down anybody's throat: I don't
wanna be hated; I would rather be hated because I suck. That's fair. Then I
could look back and say, "Yeah, we deserved to be hated."

GW: As far as flattery by your peers goes, it was cool to see a Soundgarden
press photo taped to Nigel Tufnel's amplifier when Spinal Tap played Seattle.

CC: I heard about that; fuckin' great! I wish we could have been there--I
could have worn some kind of Kiss makeup and come out onstage and done a solo
without being plugged in. [laughs]

GW: During Ice-T's soundcheck when he played Seattle, he yelled at the guy
back at the board to turn it up because "This is Soundgarden's town... we
gotta be loud!"

CC: That's so cool. We played a show together one time, and he saw us and
thought what we were doinf was pretty intense. When I lost my temper at that
show and kicked a bunch of amps over when we played "Big Dumb Sex," he told
us he thought it was cool and over the top. We discussed doing a tour with
Body Count [Ice-T's metal band], but he was making a record and it never
worked out. That would have been a blast.

...and that would be all.

Well I got my netscape working so sorry to bug you guys with asking for
help, netscape takes to long to reply, so I ended up figuring it out
myself. Well anyways I got the Jesus christ pose video to finally work,
its pretty tame, not like what I thought it to be, so I dont seee why
MTV banned it, hell Madonna can dance in front of crosses why can
Soundgarden have girls hanging on crosses. I like the terminator guy in
the vid also. BTW if you download stuff off of the web does it get
charged to your phone bill?

I like this idea. The gift I got from them is much like yours. I am also a
very kept person and don't like being with people I don't know. So for me
the gift I got was proof that I wasn't alone and that there was someone else
outthere just like me locked up in their room all alone. Through their music
I realized that through their music I can relate with myself better and have
a better understanding of my self.
My most special gift from a person though was the gift of
Soundgarden. My best guy friend had one of their cd's on a long time ago and
got me interseted in them. He isn't the biggest fan of theirs but he
introduced me to the greatest band in the world. Thanx Jeff.

Kathie
