There's a fine line between giving up and fighting it. The true fans are
going to be right on that line. We all deal with it in different ways,
but we have to keep in mind that they needed to do what was right for
them.

I just read this in Time, but Joey Ramone was saying that the band was
having their problems at Lollapalooza. They were arguing and fighting.
He also said he would never envision them quitting. That's originally
from ATN, BTW.

We need to remember that this is still the band whose music we love, or
even like a hell of a lot. We need to remember the memories.

I read this on one of those quote a day calenders...

Sorry it's not PC and all, nor is it complete because I forgot some of
it already, but I think you get the idea. Let's not become a bunch of

Not only could I see that happening, but I also think that kicks ass.
But still, I'm trying to dig up the interview where he said that he

One thing I'd love to hear of his are his solo demos. It'd be cool to
have a studio recorded bunch of only Chris music. Nowhere But You,
Fluttergirl, etc.

Fuck this reunion tour thing. That's probably the one thing I don't want
them to do. Although, I can't see them falling into the rock cliche of
that.

If anything, I could see something like "Through A&M, Soundgarden issued
this statement, 'We fucked up. But we're going back into the studio this
fall.'" Of course, don't expect that for another year or two. You get
the idea... and that's also tentative on IF they're interested in
getting back together ever. But right now, I'd say that's the last thing
on their minds.

Excuse me for going crazy on you for just a moment, but... (close your
ears, kids) Go fuck yourself. If you even have to ask that question,
then you shouldn't be a musician.

Now, the civilized answer... (you can open them again) If it feels good,
then go with it. If that's what you wrote, then keep it. If that's what
you like, then it's good. Don't let trends and fads drive your choices.

How do you think I feel? I live in Chicago where every major label is
looking for "that band" to break out of the scene. Who will it be...

That's cool. Has anybody ever heard Full On Kevin's Mom done live? I've
not. I'd assume that everything on Screaming Life and Fopp have been
done at shows because that was their starting material and you pretty
much play all of that at a show when you start. THEN you record it.

Actually, I'll bet that neither Tighter & Tighter nor Overfloater were
ever played at live shows. Those are two of my favorites.

Damn... I didn't see the Sun Times. Did you see any coverage in the

No luck.

And also, this is really to Anna and all of us Chicagoans, but what do
we think of a SOMMSfest '97? I know it's a little early, but I think it
would be cool if we could get some people together and just go to some
restauraunt near the Loop or something to that effect. Spend a day
walking the streets 'n' stuff. Find a place to hang out and talk about
the band. We can do it now, though it might still be a little cold. I
dunno.

It's a cool book. It gives you a really good view of how the whole scene
worked more than anything else. He takes a long time to break into
Soundgarden. But it's cool pre-history. It also only up to a little past
the Superunknown period. It's up to you. The book is very cool, in my
opinion, but it also hypes up the scene a little bit. You can't blame
it, though... it was a sign of the times.

after reading this official statement a couple of times now, it
really strikes me as concise. no, maybe that is the wrong word. I'm not
sure what the right word for it is, but it will probably come to me in
time. I just think those three sentences really sum everything up. the
band have broken up, the future is uncertain and they thank their
audience. I know that we all would like to know a little more of the
band's final days, but I think this statement is (for now) a satisfying
conclusion to what has happened so far. of course, we all want more. that
much is obvious from what has been said here on the list. and it would be
sad if this is all we ever know. but I don't think that will be the
case. not that there is any deep mystery here imho, but one day we'll get
some answers. anyone follow that?

> Sources close to the band suggest that singer Chris Cornell will now pursue

as much as I dislike talking about what will come next, I have to
say this. my feelings on the future don't include hater. from what I know
(from what some of you have told me), the second hater record is done. it
has been finished or near complete for a long time. whether it will come
out now, who knows? as for matt and ben working together again...no, I
don't think that will happen. as nice as it would be, I'm not sure that
either of them would be interested. certainly not in the short term. it
would be just a little bit close to the wound in most respects. that
probably includes the wwc too; if only because ben is now involved with
mcbain and those other guys in devilhead and wouldn't need both outlets
(I'm assuming that he'll soon be writing and sharing lead vocal duties).

> Guitarist Kim Thayil's plans are unclear although he did recently
> collaborate with Shawn Smith and Steve Fisk on the second Pigeonhed album.

while chris may come up with some sort of solo record (see
2.something of 'the ugly truth' in relation to solo work), I don't think
kim will become just some sort gun-for-hire. sure, he has worked on tonnes
of one-off stuff. but I don't feel that that is really any indication in
terms of future plans. hopefully he will put his talents to something a
little more enduring than perpetual guest appearances.

once we all get past the heartache, we'll see some positives come
from this. the breakup has opened new doors for matt, kim, chris and ben.
I know it sounds hokey, but it is important to me that they do what feels
right. it took a long time to find that special group of people and ignite
that creative spark that was soundgarden, so I wouldn't expect anything
substantial from any of them too soon. as much as it pains us all, I think
that's true. but I *do* plan to hear more magnificent music from these
four remarkable men.

sorry if that sounded disjointed. my head feels a little screwy
today. I just read over what I wrote; it sounds more like a stream of
consciousness than a real post <grimacing>. thanks to those who have
contacted me personally. I'll definitely get back to you when I next log

From Kerrang, April 19th 1997

SOUNDGARDEN SPLIT
It's official - the Seattle grunge heroes decide to call it quits
plus how the sad news broke

Soundgarden have made the shock announcement that they have split up. A
statement was issued last week, amid growing rumours of friction within the
band.

The statement, issued by the band's label, A&M, simply states: "After 12
years, the members of Soundgarden have amicably and mutually decided to
disband to pursue other interests. There is no word at this time on any of
the members' future plans."

However, sources close to the band believe the tensions between bassist Ben
Shepherd and the rest of the band - as well as artistic differences - might
have played a part in the grunge legends' decision to call it quits.

A source close to the foursome said: "Kim said this had been coming for a
while. They had actually been considering it since they were on tour
earlier this year. They have not been happy for a long time."

Shepherd - it is claimed - walked offstage during the band's show on
February 9 at the Neal Blaisdell Arena in Hawaii, which will now go down in
history as their last ever performance.

The bassist is also said to have angered Soundgarden when, during a recent
gigi with side project band Hater in Seattle, he is alleged to have been
involved in a fight with a member of the audience.

But frontman Chris Cornell's mum Karen denies there was trouble in the
ranks. "It was all amicable," she says of the split. "They just needed to
do something fun again."

Kerrang spent time on the road with Soundgarden in the last few weeks
before they broke up, and saw no evidence of any major friction between the
band members. In fact, they seemed very happy with their lot, which makes
this decision even more surprising.

As for future plans, Cornell is likely to pursue a solo career, whilst
Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron will record a second album with Hater for
release on A&M later this year. The pair have also contributed to the
debut album from local band Wellwater Conspiracy, which will be released
shortly in the US on Third Gear. Shepherd will also spend time working with
another one of his side projects, Devilhead, who are signed to Loosegroove
Records, owned by Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard.

So far there is no news on Thayil's plans.

THE SHOCK SPLIT: how the news broke

* There have been rumours for months that Soundgarden were about to split
up, but they've always been strongly denied

* Earlier this year, stories began to circulate that the Seattle superstars
would call it quits after they finished the world tour for the album DOTU

* However, a spokesman for the band told Kerrang at the time that there
were no plans for a split

* At 9am local time on April 9, Seattle radio station KNDD The End read the
brief statement from the band, announcing they were going to split up.
Within minutes, Kerrang recieved a copy of the official press release.

* KNDD devoted the rest of the day to playing Soundgarden records and
replaying old interviews with the band.

SOUNDGARDEN BREAKS UP
 11 April 1997

After forming in 1984 and recording four albums for A&M Records
(Louder Than Love, Badmotorfinger, Super Unknown and Down
On The Upside) one for SST (Ultramega OK), and one EP
compilation (Screaming Life/Fopp), the four members of Seattle
grunge pioneers Soundgarden recently announced that they were
breaking up to pursue other interests. The band's label had issued a
press statement that announced the group's decision to disband and
that there was not yet any word on future plans. The band, which
named itself after a pipe sculpture in Seattle's Sand Point, has been
performing out of the country in recent months and played their last
concert on February 9 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

I read yesterday about the Ty Cobb single being released here but couldn't
look today (Uni) but tomorrow arvo, I'm going to town to check it out, I'm
not bothering with the suburbs. I don't care that I have a Statistics Group
Assignment that we have to work on, well I do care enough that straight
after we're finished with that I'm going to go and look for/order it.

By the way last week in my hour of mourning (well it's been more than an
hour but after seeing stuff about the single, I'll go back to mourning
after a while {I'm still in denial}). Back to last Thursday I found out
after reading my e-mail at 5:30am too early to be up really but as it turns
out that's when it was happening over there so the news was less than an
hour old. I actually had a thought during the day that I might be the only
person in Australia at that point to know, which was really scary that no
one else was sharing my grief at least here (please Oz people inform me if
I'm right or wrong I'd like to know it was 5:30 EST).

Sidetracked once again but last week I went and got the Australian "Burden
in my hand" Single with the miss print of "Birth Ritual" as "Birth control"
simply for the miss print really. Is this really silly or dumb or perhaps
in years to come my $6.50 will have been well spent not that I would sell
it if it were worth something?

Actually the only person I was able to tell about the break up then was the
guy who sold me the Cd although he didn't believe me, before that I'd been
only able to point at the computer screen and tell people to read the
subject headings I couldn't actually say the sentence "Soundgarden has
broken up" though the people who I did tell to read the screen had a go at
me anyway so I'm not sure if it was really worth it but it was such an easy
shot to take so the opportunity was taken although they went no further in
their harassment.

I really, really think I have waffled enough.

Hey all. Soundgarden parting ways has been hard for me to swallow,
but I've been "in the business" at various levels long enough to
understand how most groups just can't stay together. The ones who do
end up doing the same old crap over and over (like Aerosmith, Rush,
The Stones, etc.), so it's usually for the best musically speaking
when the members of good groups go out and mingle with other good

Subject: Re: spread the music

Hey Dun-wei and other sommspeople,
About the teeny-bopper thing...I tend to agree with your
general statement, but I would say the Chris-craze began even earlier
than SuperUnknown. I think one of my earliest exposures to SG was
seeing a Spin magazine in my local 7-11, after Badmotorfinger had
been released and the Grunge thing was becoming big media. On the
cover of said Spin was Chris, shirtless, with long hair. The words
on the cover said.."GRUNGE. Chris Cornell has it. Madonna wants it."
Looking at the picture and being a teenage girl of normal hormone
levels, my response was..."hmmm, Madonna wants it. Now there's a big
surprise." (Being a teenage girl of above-average intelligence, I
spotted the wedding ring and refused to start drooling.) The Madonna
comment referred to the fact that she had just started her Maverick
record label and was trying to sign some grunge-type bands. I think
she got Candlebox or something, and also had some discussions with
Courtney Love (which evidently got nowhere).
I would say that a lot of girls probably became interested
in Chris at that phase of their careers, although the number of these
lustful lassies probably increased exponentially with the release of
Superunknown.
This discussion reminds me of a question I had. I heard that
Chris cut off his hair on stage. Was there a reason for such a
dramatic gesture? I was thinking of that Spin magazine cover and
wondering if it was meant as a flipping of the bird to people who
were buying SG stuff because of his good looks....sort of cutting off
his hair to spite his face. "Oh yeah? You're at this concert just
to see a good looking guy with long hair and no shirt? You don't
know our music at all? TAKE THIS!!!" Clip, clip. Was anybody at
that particular show? Was anything said? Maybe he was just tired
of having long hair.
Its my birthday today....and the one-week anniversary of
Soundgarden's breakup. Happy Birthday to me....not.

I sharpened my wits on a dead man's skull...

I basically know nothing of Devilhead. I've only heard them once, when
they opened for SG at the Showbox in June. In my review of SG's show,
I mentioned how basically lousy I thought they were. That they didn't
seem into it at all, like it was such a drag being there. I didn't
know if that was just their stage persona or what. The singer from
Green Apple Quick Step joined them for a couple songs, and he really
seemed to pump some energy into them. Plus, for those couple songs, I
was liking it a whole lot better.

In fairness, I was also feeling sorry for them (for all bands) in that
position. They were opening up for SG in Seattle in a small club.
Pretty safe to say no one was at the show just to see them. I thought,
well maybe they felt negative energy from the crowd, knowing most of us
were just biding our time until SG took the stage, thus their "can't
wait to get out of here" attitude. I dunno, just my observations at the time.

So, I thought they pretty much sucked, but really know nothing of the
band or music, other than that night. If someone singing a couple
songs could greatly improve their sound, adding Ben could totally
change Devilhead. And even more so if he did lead vocals, as someone
posted earlier. That would be my hope and interest in wanting to see
them. And, of course, to see Ben play.

tho I know for a fact this all began back in October when the guitarist left.

I had sort of thought something was up with IS, aside from when the
guitarist left. Peter has done a few shows alone in the recent past.
But I also saw that they were scheduled to have played the Fenix, I
believe last Saturday. I don't know if they actually performed, but if
so, would it still have been Peter with Suzy, Katy, et al., or a
restructuring of the former band? Any word on what they are/will be
doing separately, if they have/will part ways?

Wow, seems like the season for new beginnings this Spring. And it's
not just with the Cornells, or even bands in general, but the whole
world seems to be turning upside down, from what I've observed.
Strange days indeed...

I also meant to include this bit earlier: Truly will be playing at
Moe's this Saturday with Green Apple Quick Step and Sport O (if that
info is still correct). This for anyone in the Seattle area AND to
keep folks updated on what's going on with the endeavors of the <choke>
former <choke> members of our beloved SG.

No, Chris didn't do this onstage. If I'm not mistaken, he did it at home
during one of his reclusive periods, while Susan was away on business. I
believe he mailed his hair to her...yikes..

A number of folks have written me privately asking what I thought about the
disastrous news of the ninth, and though I really should be neck deep in
studying human behavior (the deranged profile interests of a die-hard SG
fan), I thought I'd pen a few things to our list.

For my part, I was quite surprised with the news, having heard it over our
local radio 105.3. I'm always on the road for important rock announcements,
like the news about Kurt Cobain over K-ROQ. I greatly miss the fact that
seeing SG perform live again is out of the question. Though, I look forward
to hearing great individual music from the guys. I mean who wouldn't
appreciate more songs as evocative and perfect as Cornells Seasons? Or the
Hater material, or the obvious Thayil rifts on the Presidents album?

I deeply regret the break-up of the band, but artists transition, and
frankly, I'm glad the fellas are alive and capable of making new sounds for
us to listen to. Here's what I wish - that I'd seen SG perform MORE, and that
I'd known the last time would in fact be the last time. I'm sure I'm not the
only one who would have flown to Chicago if I'd known it was the last gasp -
I mean, exhaltation!

And for Seth, thanks so much for the list and the cool folks I've met because
of it.

That is all.

Actually Soundgarden toured a lot I thought. Just about every summer in
a row the last eight years I believe. Does anyone know if 8 years is
right? All I know is that they have toured in the past a lot. --Marie

After Lolla 92 I think they took some time off. They did a brief tour
with Neil Young and pearl Jam in 93 I think. After that they toured for
SU, but that lasted into early 95. They did the reading festival in 95
also. So they did tour alot.

How many times does Seth have to tell you boneheads?

1. Do NOT send any mail to SOMMS-DIGEST!!
2. Do NOT send copies of anything to SOMMS-DIGEST!!
3. ONLY Seth can send things to SOMMS-DIGEST!!

I have gotten at least 6 extra messages outside the digest since the
breakup.
How hard is it to understand? I get the digest because I want all the
messages in one email, hence the idea of a digest. Get it right!

Soundgarden content: Did anyone see SG on MTV's the Week in Rock? If it
was a good segment, then I'd like to get a hold of a copy. Can anybody
help me out?

Hey y'all,

This freak that I work with actually bought a magazine called Hit Parader
Presents the Year of Marilyn Manson. Yes, I work w/ this weirdo (he's
actually a nice guy w/ a wife and kids). Anyway, it had a section entitled
Celebrity Rate-a-Video, and this month's reviewer was Woody Weatherman of
C.O.C. Low and behold, Woody was given BUTOW to review! I will now reproduce
his stellar review for all you non-followers of the Rev. Manson (let's hope
that's all of you) to enjoy.

Blow Up the Outside World
"I haven't seen this one before. I love this song. I'm a huge fan. This song
gets a 12 out of 10. Chris Cornell is one of the best songwriters around
these days, not to mention one of the coolest guys. A little Clockwork Orange
going on there. This is just big rock; they are one of the few bands around
these days. I like the video; it has some of the images that Black Hole Sun
had, like the big project (?) behind them, which is cool. This is excellent,
I'm into it. Big thumbs up. "

And here's his review of Johnny Cash's Rusty Cage:
"Oh man, it's Cash! Man! I'm a huge fan of Johnny Cash. I've got this record.
I'm sure the SG guys are excited about this 'cause they're fans too. I've
been a Cash fan since I was a little kid. My old man turned me onto him. I
like it when he pumps it up at the end, when it goes a little faster,
chugging along. He's looking old though. My God. It's a slow-paced video,
kinda typical, but it's Johnny Cash, so I can't say anything bad about it"

There ya go. Hope my fellow COC fans enjoyed it.

Hey 3 mill is alot, anyways Super debuted at 1 and I think it went on to
sell 5 or 6 million world wide or something like that. Down debuted at 2
but thats good considering that 96 was the year of friendly power pop.
IE No Doubt. I'm not putting down pearl jam but anything they put out
goes numero uno, hell I bet they can put out an album of nothing but
silent air, and it would go #1. Although they did fall off the charts
rahter quickly. Oh well I guess Soundgarden wasnt every ones cup of tea
but hey least we still got SavageGarden! ; >

Subject: Soundgarden Gifts

I have an idea for a thread. What *specific* gift has Soundgarden or one
or more of its members given you. I don't mean the gift of wonderful
music, I mean something specific.

For me the gift came from Chris. I have a personality very much like his
and I've always felt guilty about my reluctance to be a "social
butterfly". My mother criticized me for wanting to spend time alone in
my room reading and my husband has accused me in the past of being
antisocial when I didn't want to go to parties or something with a bunch
of people I didn't know (his friends or work buddies). I used to think
there must be something wrong with me because I really have no desire to
be buddy-buddy with all my neighbors. Then I got into Soundgarden and
started learning about Chris and his acceptance of his reclusiveness.
And the more I learned about him, the more I came to accept my own
introverted personality. I realized that I'm not anti-social, but have a
need for space and solitude. Now when I feel pressured to do something
that just doesn't feel right I remind myself of Chris and it helps me
feel OK about being the way I am. So in many ways Soundgarden has really
helped me like myself better.

Anybody else want to share a Soundgarden *gift*?

I wouldnt say this was a guft or anything but it was nice finding that a
guy like Chris was somewhat like myself. We are alike in many ways I
guess. I am an introvert and proud of it!! I hate being social it sucks.
I have been known to stay indoors for weeks at a time. Why doesnt anyone
belive in loneliness? I do. Chris also made me look at writing in a
different style too. Write about how you feel. Not so much about your
surrounding but what is inside. Thats all the gifts I can think of right
now.
