Subject: ty cobb single

I've just ordered the ty cobb cd single from my record bar, but I don't know
why it was released in Australia, sabrina...got a surprise myself when I saw
it listed on the soundgarden releases I got from the shop, coz I didn't know
it was going to be released. If you can't get it in America, I'd be happy
to order it in for you from here.

While I'm here, I only just posted off a t-shirt order from the imusic
minimart...I'm just wondering if everything will still be going with their
merchandise purchasing, etc coz I did the international money order thing (I
really do prefer the online credit card, but it's not available at this
minimart as I'm sure you all know)...another friend wants me to put in an
order for them, but I thought I'd check that we're still able to order
merchandise before I put the order in.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated,
Jo

Subject: I feel the hurt surround me...

	my friend and I have had this silly saying for quite awhile now;
and it sort of sums up how I feel about posting to the list today. "like
harry on horseback" has been our way of describing those people who come
into a situation halfway through the procedings, only to sound like a fool
because they don't know the whole story. this time, I'm harry.

for a long time now, soundgarden have been a significant part of
my life. their music has been one of the most gratifying constants in my
everyday life since the end of 1993. through this list my appreciation
and admiration for what they have done has grown immeasurably. sadly, I am
not feeling some of the grief many fellow listers are now going through. I
guess I'm feeling a little numb. not because of the breakup, even though I
wish that were the reason. I really wish that were the case.

in a horrible parallel, my girlfriend of three years broke up with
me on the easter weekend. it has made life more than difficult for me; I'm
sure I don't need to explain why. my head knows that the band is no more,
but I'm afraid my heart isn't ready to understand the consequences of that
just yet.

I considered writing a soundgarden eulogy and posting it to the
list, but that seems a little redundant now. maybe it would have sounded
right a couple of days ago, but not now. beyond that, I'm not really sure
that I have anything halfway relevant to add. the only thing I know for
sure is that I would rather chris, kim, matt and ben do their own thing
and be happy than stay together and be miserable. to continue and be
unhappy seems really wrong to me.

I know some sommsters (probably all of us) feel cheated by their
breakup; that they still owe us something. well, maybe we have been
spoiled. as much as it hurts us, the only thing they owe anyone is to be
true to themselves. without that, the music wouldn't be even remotely real
or sincere. I know that we will all come to understand that one day.

I thank soundgarden for their courage and their gift; a gift that
we can all keep close to our hearts for just as long as we want to. I also
thank all those members of this list, past or present. without somms and
all those people who make up the somms community, well, I guess we'd all
be a lot worse off. I don't have much experience in this, but I think that
once the hurt fades this list will still be a relevant and vital tribute
to the band and their timeless music.

	that's it, I guess.

I agree that it would be really nice to know a little more. Humans are
curious by nature; it's not a state to be ashamed of.

It makes perfect sense for people to want to ascribe a reason to the
breakup. Our $13.99 spent on each album or single or ep or whatever
bought the guys their houses, cars, etc. We got the music in return, yes,
but it would seem that further explanation would be nice. To get into a
discussion of who gave or took more would be silly and I'm sure no one
would venture that even the pumped-up price of CDs was outrageous for the
ability to listen to Soundgarden's music.

But, maybe the notification at all was that gift. They could have just
split and not told anyone. It would have come out eventually, like the
next time Rolling Stone or MTV tried to interview them, or something.
But, by letting us know soon after they decided, it saved fans from
prolonged anticipation of further albums.

I would still like to know more of the story, but maybe there is no
story, short of a conversation that came to a mutual agreement to split.

Well,

what can I say? its hard, its really hard to take in. Im gonna miss
the band so much, but we have to be thankful for what they gave us. I
dont agree with other people saying they owe us nothing, thats not a
valid point because it doesnt make it easier to deal with, similarly
the mails about how there is more improtant stuff in the world. Sure
there is, a lot of it, but its what is relevant to *you* that
counts. We still have a lot of music to listen to, and a lot of the
guys music to look forward to, so wear your T-shirts wtih pride, hold
the head up hight, and keep it together. Lets start talking,
remembering, disscussing and arguing again, and just see what the lads
come up with.

I have to disagree with this. I feel honored to have been given the
opportunity to hear the music those four men created. I personally don't
feel that I deserve any more than what they want to give. And if we're
talking about personal responsibility, the first responsibilty a person
has is to him/herself. If they, individually, were not happy in their
situation they have every right and *responsibility* to get out. Being a
very private person myself, and understanding that ending a relationship
such as the one they must have had with each other was (is) a personal
one, I feel absolutely no need to know the *inside* story. They've
split. At the end of the day, that's all that really matters.

but it seems to me like they took the easy way out, like they
> chose to avoid dealing with the emotions their decision was sure to

Obviously, none of us can get inside their collective heads, but from
what I've been told this was front page news in the local Seattle
papers, the headline of several newscasts and probably all anyone talked
about in the clubs all weekend, do you really think, living in Seattle
(or the Seattle area) that they thought they could avoid dealing with
this by not elaborating? I think (and this is obviously just my opinion)
that they chose not to elaborate because it's none of our business and
publicy airing all the details was not going to change/accomplish
anything.

To use a fairly well-known example of this, think of the well-publicized
Van Halen breakups (I know the actual band didn't breakup, but just hear
me out). First there was the split with DLR when everyone was
bad-mouthing everyone and you got all these different sides of the story
and had no idea what to believe. Then after several successful (albeit
stagnate, imho) years with SH, another well-publicized split where
everyone aired every pathetic detail. Then, DLR is back and then he's
out and we have to hear all about that all over again. I personally do
not care to hear these kinds of details. I want music from a band and if
they can't or won't give me that anymore, then I've been given
everything I need from them.

And if you use the analogy that someone else mentioned of
> looking at it like a divorce involving children you would have to come
> to the same conclusion. If the divorce involved children in the age
> range represented here you better believe there would be some explaining
> to do.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "children in the age range
represented here". If you recall, when I used that example (actually it
was a friend of mine who used it, but whatever) I specifically said that
the "children" in this case would be the music. It would not be fair to
the *music* for them to go on without their hearts in it. Obviously
putting out inferior music is not fair to the fans either, but I beleive
their focus should be the music, not us.

I don't think its asking too much to want to hear something from
> them. I imagine they are struggling with their own grief right now, but
> I'm hoping that eventually they will decide to talk to us in some way.

Again, I have to disagree. I think that they need to take care of
themselves right now and not worry about the fans or the media or
whoever else wants a piece of them. Maybe they will want to talk about
it in more depth later but, honestly, I would rather just hear some
music.

I know everyone is going to deal with something like this differently
and I'm certainly not saying that you're wrong to feel they way you do,
but I'm just trying to stay focused on what brought me to them in the
first place--the music--and not think too much about why this has all
happened. Maybe I'm just in denial.

        Back Again,

The weirdest things happened over this last week during this whole "crisis."
I did a lot of moping, and people would stop me and ask what's wrong. When
I told them that I just found out SG broke up, anybody who has known me for
a significant amount of time gave me sympathy like my dog just died. It was
a little much at times, but most were sincere, and it made me feel better.
And like somebody said, nobody died, and the music is still there, so I
guess its alright. BTW, my mom really *did* make me a cake after I told
her, and tried to console me with stories of how when the Beatles broke up,
they had great careers, etc... Anyhoo...the point of all this nonsense is
that my friends were a big help, and that includes a lot of you out there.

On a different note, like many of you I sat down and listened to all of my
SG albums at once this weekend, and I mean really listened...like the second
time you ever hear an album (yes, second. Think about it) and there were
several songs that I had always thought were alright/good, but this time it
was like WOW, what a great song! Among the newly awakened tunes were Limo
Wreck, Tighter and Tighter, Switch Opens, and Smokestack Lightning. It
pisses me off that it took SG's breakup for me to notice these songs, but oh
well. I am just filling space now, so I will go, but let me know if that
has ever happened for you with an old song, and what song it was.

Subject: Melody Maker/NME/Billboard reports on split (long post)

It's nearly a week since I heard the news and now the first printed reports
of the split are appearing in the UK music press. Apart from a brief news
item on MTV last Thursday, this is the first many UK Soundgarden fans will
get to hear about it. We have next to no radio or tv stations that would
think of reporting the split - or airing a Soundgarden tribute weekend or
special - and the proportion of internet users here is small compared to
the US. I feel very fortunate that I had somms and Seth's site to turn to.

Anyway, here's what MM and NME have to say...which isn't much!

First off, NME is staffed with 'people' who would rather eat shit than
admit to liking Soundgarden. At least in public. However they reported it
very matter of factly (apart from the ghastly Judas Priest pun)...
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Soundgarden: breaking the lawn

Soundgarden have announced they are splitting up after 12 years together.
The Seattle band announced their break-up in a brief statement issued by
their record company A&M. It said: "After twelve years, the members of
Soundgarden have amicably and mutually decided to disband to pursue other
interests. There is no word at this time on any of the members' future
plans. Soundgarden would like to thank all their fans for their support
throughout the years."

Sources close to the band suggest that singer Chris Cornell will now pursue
a solo career. Drummer Matt Cameron and bassist Ben Shepherd will continue
to work in side project Hater and will release their second LP in the summer.

Shepherd is also reported to be working with Seattle band Devilhead - which
features Brian and Kevin Wood, brothers of the Mother Love Bone singer
Andrew, who died in 1990 - on their third album. It will be issued on
Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard's Loosegroove label later this year.

Guitarist Kim Thayil's plans are unclear although he did recently
collaborate with Shawn Smith and Steve Fisk on the second Pigeonhed album.

Soundgarden released five LPs, beginning with Screaming Life in 1987 and
ending with last year's Down On The Upside, and sold more than 20 million
albums worldwide.
New Musical Express, April 19th 1997.
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Incidentally, on the same page Dave Grohl was talking about more Nirvana
stuff being released and commented..."when a band comes to a halt, and
hasn't run its full course, there is a *need* for more [material]." Whether
Soundgarden had run its full course, we'll never really know, but the
thought that Christi and other unreleased stuff will never see the light of
day does make me very sad. They gave us so much but right now I feel that I
do *need* more.

Onto Melody Maker: home to Everett True, the guy who Sub Pop flew to
Seattle where he supposedly coined the term 'grunge' and the rest is
history etc etc...so I was expecting a sympathetic report. *Wrong!* Not
only did they print a pic of the band looking very moody and captioned it
'Soundgarden in happier days' (ha bloody ha) they blame the break up on
some bloke called *Matt Shepherd*!!!!
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Soundgarden have split amid rumours of in-fighting and ill will. A
statement issued by the band's label A&M claimed the spit was "amicable".
However, The Maker understands that the band have been at loggerheads for
the last year. Their decision to split followed a massive argument at the
Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu on Februaty 9.

Insiders on Soundgarden's US tour last year, which included several
Lollapalooza dates, say the band usually travelled on separate tour buses
and flights.

Much of the discord is said to revolve around bassist Matt Shepherd's
behaviour. At a hater gig at Seattle's
OK Hotel last Hallowe'en, Shepherd jumped offstage and punched someone he
thought was heckling him. The heckler turned out to be Daniel House, head
of C/Z Records and the person who gave Soundgarden one of their first breaks.

Shepherd is said to have already joined Devilhead and is at work with them
on demos for their third studio album which is due to be released on Stone
Gossard's Loose Groove label later this year. It's not known what the other
three members of Soundgarden plan to do. Guitarist Kim Thayil recently
guested on Pigeonhed's new record The Full Sentence, and drummer Matt
Cameron was in Hater with Shepherd.
Melody Maker, 19th April 1997.
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following comes from Billboard April 19th (not *British* press, I know,
but....)

They gave us a dozen good years: Soundgarden has called it quits after 12
years together. No reason for the split, termed "amicable" was given.
According to sources, the band's four members - Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil,
Ben Shepherd and Matt Cameron - are each signed to A&M as individual
artists and are expected to announce any solo plans shortly.

Additionally, it looks like the band's current album Down On The Upside is
the last music we'll see from them as a collective unit: A source says
there are no 'from the vaults' albums of any previously unreleased material
planned.

In a statement released to staffers at A&M, the band's home since 1989,
label CEO Al Cafaro said "[Soundgarden has] chosen this moment to end the
creative chapter of Soundgarden and move on to other artistic challenges,
parting with respect, grateful for their collective accomplishments."

The band had an amazing run, garnering both commercial and critical
acclaim. According to A&M, Soundgarden sold more than 20 million albums
worldwide.

while I agree 500% with the sentiments expressed in Andrea's post, let me
point out that conventional seattle media (aside from rock radio)
completely IGNORED the breakup. it was NOT in the newspaper, was NOT

people have this image of seattle as being the center of the known world.
the music and art scene is widely ignored by the mainstream and has been

Sorry for the bad info. My brother lives in Seattle and told me on

Hey Sommsters.....
I, like you am saddened by the breakup...but I guess life goes
on, eh?
I only recently got into the band, after I heard Blow Up the
Outside World. I had heard their music on and off through the years,
but for some reason never got into them. I know that it doesn't seem
like much, but since I've only know them for a short time seems to
make me feel worse about it because I know that I won't be able to
get to know them any closer.
I consider myself VERY lucky to have seen them in
concert...twice. I'm in the Navy and being stationed in Japan, it
made it pretty convenient for me to take a vacation to Sydney,
Australia for about 20 days...talk about an incredible time....
Anyway, not to get off of the subject...I was there in time to go
to the Big Day Out there. Soundgarden was headlining there, so it
was a pretty rare opportunity I think. Their show that night wasn't
that great, other than the INCREDIBLE acoustic version of Black Hole
Sun. The idiot sound people there didn't have them anywhere near loud
enough, so when you're in a group of however many thousands of people
there were and standing about 300 feet from the stage, it makes for a
kind of quiet show...oh well.
After seeing them there..I was convinced that if I didn't see
them again....I would probably die...ok, not really....but I did
really want to see them again.....so...I did.
Later the same week...that Thursday night..they played again, in
a regular environment. There were two other Aussie bands that played
first...and then it was SOUNDGARDEN. They put on a phenomenal
show...very very impressive. Items that were thrown out into the
crowd included, but I don't think were limited to: Drumsticks,
Chris's shirt (don't go crazy now, ladies!!), and ONE red bass guitar
(Matt's of course). I was impressed by it anyway.
I am disappointed in their breakup..but so far my only actual
reaction to this is to start ordering all the music that they've put
out...including the Temple of the Dog, various singles, etc. My
collection, which isn't anywhere near complete, includes Screaming
Life/FOPP, DOTU w/ DUOTU (which I bought in Australia), Ultramega OK,
Badmotorfinger, and Superunknown. Far from complete. I have since
ordered Louder than Love, Alive in the Superunknown, Temple of the
Dog, and a couple of singles. I know that I want to get some live
stuff too..if anyone could recommend some live stuff to me, I'd
appreciate it.
Luckily for me, I have a wide variety of musical preferences...my
collection is well over 200 cd's and growing..so I'm not in any way
going to have lack of something to listen to!!!! But, I'm not happy
about this one bit..although I do have to respect their decision.
One last thing on this, I know, painfully long letter.....
If anyone cares, (which I doubt, but I'll include anyway) after Three
years of being stationed in Japan on this ship (USS Belleau Wood), I
am finally going to come home in about 50 days. I am sooo looking
foward to coming home again. I've been to a LOT of places, but
there's NOTHING, NOTHING AT ALL, that is as good as the USA!!!
(Australia comes pretty close though!)
Ok, I'm ending this letter (horribly long I know) on a good
note... I know that we haven't heard the end of this group yet...I'm
going to keep my fingers crossed for them getting back together, and
look foward to wherever Chris is willing to take us.......
Sincerely,
Jon There must be something else,
                                    There must be something good,
                                              Far away...........

Here ya go..... Thsi is from the St. Pete Times, courtesy of me.:)

Soundgarden's end called the end of grunge
=95The band helped define the Seattle sound, and it's hometown rock scene=
 is
full of shock and regret.

SEATTLE----The breakup of Soundgarden, a rock band that helped defin=
e
the uniquely Seattle sound known as "grunge", is a sad milestone in Seatt=
le
rock history.
Signaling what many feel is the end of the grunge era, acclaimed
multiplatinum hard rockers Soundgarden called it quits Wenesday after 12
years together.
Along with Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam, Soundgarden brou=
ght
international attention to the city's rock scene with it's powerful and
brooding sound.
Several of Soundgarden's songs---Rusty Cage, Jesus Christ Pose, and
Black Hole Sun---are classics of the Seattle sound.
While the breakup was a surprise to many, the writing had been on th=
e
wall for some time. Relations among group members reportedly were straine=
d.
During Lollapalooza tour, band members were taking separate flights and
meeting at the gigs. A few performances, insiders said, were interrupte=
d by
onstage spats that saw some members walk off in mid-performance. And it =
was
recently rumored that bassist Ben Shepherd had joined another band,
Devilhead.
Talk of a breakup brewed for weeks , but few fans believed there was=
 any
truth to it. So the groups decision to disband was greeted with shock an=
d
regret. "It really makes me sad," said Jeff Gilbert, a Seattle-based
writer and editor for Guitar World magazine.
"Soundgarden is the cornerstone of the Seattle sound. With them gone=
,
the whole scene could crumble. A lot of Seattle bands are really depresse=
d.
They're in a state of shock."
Soundgarden began its career on Seattles influential "indie" label, =
Sub
Pop Records, and later moved to A&M Records. The group performed twice o=
n
the Lollapalooza alternative-rock tour, most recently last sumer with
headliner Metallica.
Soundgarden, which has sold more than 20-million albums, won two Gra=
mmy
Awards in 1994 (for Black Hole Sun and Spoonman) and was nominated for s=
ix
others.
The song Pretty Noose, from the groups current album, Down on the Up=
side
(released last May), brought Soundgardens most recent Grammy nominatioon.
Unlike the groups previous album, Superunknown, the latest album was a ra=
w,
stripped-down record.
The lyrics to Pretty Noose are dark and menacing--and perhaps even
prophetic: "Diamon rope, silver chain/Pretty noose is a pretty pain/And I
don't like/What you got me hanging from."
The groups last concerts in December was postphoned for a week becau=
sed
lead singer Chris Cornell was having throat problems, which wasn't in
evidence at the rescheduled concert.
In an interview before the show, Thayil yearned for a time when the b=
and
played small night-clubs rather than large arenas.
"Our initial fans were very much our peers," he said.
"They were musicians, artists, students, people involved somehow in
music. But nowadays, you also have the kids and the housewives, the casua=
l
fans. With your casual fans, you say, 'Thanks for the money.' And they sa=
y,
'Thanks for the song.' "
In the past few years, band members have explored new musical fronti=
ers.
Drummer Matt Cameron was among the rock musicians who performed at the
November 1995 "Cyberian Rhaopsody" concert, which paired Seattle's rock
scene with the Seattle symphony.
Band members are likely to resurface in other bands, or as solo
performers.
"Every one of those guys probably has a bright future," said rock
station KNDD-FM disc jockey Bill Reid. "They're so talented, I don't thin=
k
we've seen the last of them."

                                                  There you guys go. Damn=
 i'm
nice. :) Hey, has anyone seen Shroomy?

For those of you who haven't seen it, there's an interview with Chris,
Kim, and Ben on Mesa Boogie's page. It's from a while back, so it has
nothing to do with breaking up. It does, however, provide some
potentially interesting information about the gear they use. If you're
interested, http://www.mesaboogie.com/US/Artists/sg/ is the URL. Enjoy.

From: Rebekah Henderson <rebemat@usit.net>
Subject: Breakup article

This is a short article from my local newspaper, KENTUCKY NEW ERA:

Soundgarden disbanding

One of the loudest and best-selling rock groups of the decade has disbanded
quietly, as the members of Soundgarden announced their breakup in a brief
statement posted on the Internet.

"After 12 years, the members of Soundgarden have amicably and mutually
decided to disband to pursue other interest," said the statement, issued
Wednesday in Seattle. "There is no word at this time on any of the members'
future plans."

Diana Baron, a publicist for A&M Records, said none of the four
members-principal songwriter and singer Chris Cornell, 32, guitarist Kim
Thayil, 36, bassist Ben Shepherd, 28, and drummer Matt Cameron, 34-would
comment.

Soundgarden, known for a thunderous, brooding instrumental approach, came to
prominence in the late 1980s as part of the Seattle rock scene that also
spawned Pearl Jam and Nirvana. The group won two Grammy awards and was
nominated for six others.

Five of the group's albums have sold more than 20 million copies, and the
cuts "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman" won Grammys in 1994 for Best Hard Rock
Performance and Best Metal Performance, respectively.

May Soundgarden be with you.

Subject: I know it is long, sorry.

I've hung out on the mailing list for sometime, but I never posted. Of
course, I had really nothing significant to say or at least that is how I
felt. I would disagree or sympathize silently with every post, but today it
is different.

I just came from a DIO show. You know Ronnie James Dio once a singer for
Rainbow and Black Sabbath. Well, his concert was just incredible and I got
to meet him after the show and he was extremely charming and spent gads of
time with each fan... signing and taking pictures for them.

I AM TRUELY DISAPPOINTED THAT MY DREAM OF ONE DAY MEETING SOUNDGARDEN IS
SHATTERED.

It just doesn't seem fair thats all. I mean the DIO thing just happened,
because my fiancee is a huge Sabbath fan and he has been meeting the members
for a couple of years. And he is just a wealth of information about who was
the singer that year and who the the line up at that show was. I mean when
we go to a concert whether it is Ozzy; G//Z/R ; DIO; Bill Ward; Sabbath; or
what ever group we go see to touch base with his roots that are imbedded in
BLACK SABBATH. I always thought......

THANK GOD SOUNDGARDEN IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE. THEY WILL ALWAYS BE TOGETHER.
IT WAS A FEELING OF SECURITY KNOWING THAT I DIDN'T HAVE TO GO SO DEEP INTO
THEIR HISTORY, INSTEAD I COULD FOCUS ON THEIR KICK ASS MUSIC. JUST FORGET
THE DAY TO DAY DRAMA SURROUNDED AROUND LIFE.

But that is gone. Now, just like him I will have to constantly be running
after their solo projects in hopes of a reunion. Its depressing to relate
this break up to a divorce, but its like mom and dad called it quits and now
I have to choose which one to live with. Will it be Chris, Kim, Ben or Matt,
because they will all have their own worlds now. And yeah you can say well
we still have the memory of SG, but come on I've seen the whole Sabbath thing
and it sucks and especially to visit these web sites and they are like
tombstones.

One last thing, I really think that SG could have done things different like
toured more. I have only seen them once, they hardly ever touched their
whole fan base like other bands do . I think that touring was their biggest
down fall, especially after analyzing the fact that Superunknown was a Number
One Album and Down on the Upside did very poorly comparatively.

So sorry this is so long. I hope someone understands at least part of what I
am trying to say.

Depressed and still Dedicated--
Tina

I figured you guys would know... Which should I get, Louder Than Love, or
Ultramaga OK? I'm leaning towards Ultramega OK, myself. But I'm not sure I
can get both, so... I've never heard them, I just want to get as much SG
stuff as possible now. I think I've actually become more obsessed. I might
not get either, I just want your opinion.

Subject: New Metal Crown
From: Ben Timberlake <btimlake@nwu.edu>

Is New Metal Crown worth it? Depends on what you want it for. I read it
in a couple days and was only slightly more knowledgeable about
soundgarden after doing so. Much of the info contained has been discussed
right here on SOMMS.
It is, however, told in a nice "story-like" format. Also, it's nice to
have as a handy reference. Like when you want to know: "Damn, who was
that bassist that got the boot after the Louder Than Love tour?"
Anyway, all that said, I can pick up a copy of the book for a couple
interested parties who cannot find them elsewhere. They're $10.95 (actual
price) + S&H.
