Ok.. I don't mean to sound judgmental or anything but you kind of need to
do some rethinking.. I mean, you're right, every song does have its own
meaning, and that should make Soundgarden that much more special to
you.. nobody says you can't wear your t-shirts or listen to their
music.. This whole breakup thing should make you realize that much more
how wonderful Soundgarden is/was.. I personally plan to go into mourning
and deck myself out in Soundgarden gear and probably annoy the hell out
of my friends by listening to unending Soundgarden music... and you have
no right to call them fools.. they obviously didn't have everything every
band wants because otherwise they wouldn't have broken up.. they don't
owe anything to you or the rest of us.. they only owe music to
themselves and they would be denying themselves what they really want if
they stayed together (at least I guess so).. anyway.. I went through my
own pissed off stage concerning them breaking up.. I still am somewhat
mad, but if it's what they really want then I guess it's for the best..
hey, maybe if we're lucky they'll do one last show for fan-club members
only (assuming they all stay in Seattle)

When I was angry, I said something I regret to someone about Ben, I think it

We can only speculate on this right now. Unless we get some sort of inside

Subject: trampled underfoot

We should all be very grateful for this list and our friends here. I'm
on a SG newsgroup and frankly I'm in shock at what I have read there.
Everytime someone expresses grief or even suggests a personal way to pay
tribute to the band, they are being mercilessly SLAMMED!! I'm talking
about just plain foul-mouthed meanness. I don't know how those people
can call themselves fans, and if they aren't fans what the hell are they
doing on the newsgroup?
Anyway, one thing that has really struck me reading the postings here is
that while there are hundreds of us all over the world, so many of us
seem to have no one in the flesh to turn to. It's one thing to not
understand someone else's grief experience, to not be able to feel the
same way they do. It's quite another altogether to be deliberately
cruel, to belittle someone, to kick them when they're down. I don't
care what the issue is, a band breakup, the death of a pet, the loss of
a friend, anything that causes a person pain. I'm no pollyanna and I
never have been. I'm at least as cynical as anybody, but it's a sad
commentary on human nature isn't it. We should all learn from this to
be very careful with others' emotional attachments, even if they seem
stupid or blown out of proportion to us.

MtV. If you saw the week in rock this weekend, all I have to say is look at
the last segment when Kurt was with chris at the '97 grammy's. Look at
where Susan is. Look at Chris' reaction when Kurt asks him about future
plans. Listen closly to what Chris' is saying. Look at his facial
expression. I think that it may be a clue to one reason of the breakup.

In response to what I read for everyone, it does seem like we only have each
other to turn to 'cause no one else understands. My dad laughs and says I
should get a life, my mom is so sarcastic is fuckin' anoying, my boyfriend
was laughing at me, and everyone around me just seem like they didn't notice
how I was feeling. Only two other people at my school knew how I felt. They
put their band in Soundgarden's place, and themselves in my situation. They
understood. It's just too bad that we all really can't get together face to
face in a room, and have a kind of a roundtable discussion.

As for Rolling Stone blamming this whole thing partially on Ben, I'm going to
personally write them a letter telling them exactly how they are wrong, and I
suggest you do the same. they've done this to so many other bands, and other
people. They just never get their facts straight.

You're right... nobody does. I'm not blaming Ben (even if it does seem
that way). What I am saying is that there was definitely a lot of
tension and Ben was obviously releasing it in a way that is different
from how the others released it.

Unacceptable to the other guys in the band? Maybe.

And for making speculations on what they're going to do, I see no
problem with that. If we were once allowed to speculate on new albums,
we should be able to speculate on future projects.

And besides... who doesn't want to see Skin Yard back together (well...
maybe not at the expense of Soundgarden... it would be better if there
was a nice little compromise.

Subject: Possible futures

Since we're discussing possible SG futures here, here's my call:

Devilhead does okay, but no real commercial success. Ben plays
with Hater as well, and leaves Devilhead for Hater.

Matt does whatever the hell he wants to...plays on a bunch of
albums, records with Hater, etc. He becomes the drumming "guru".
People just call him and say "Hey matt, you wanna play on our album?"
And Matt (being the superniceguy that he is) says "ok. it'll be fun."

Kim spends the early months tormenting Billy Corgan and making him
cry on a regular basis. He'll get a column in some music magazine,
preferably entitled "I'm Kim. You're not." If the whole AIC thing
is true, about them breaking up too, don't be suprised to see
him pal-ing around w/ his buddy Jerry Cantrell. Perhaps a Jerry/Kim
project happening?

Chris - the much talked about "solo" album? Hmm...I see him
disappearing from the big music scene for awhile...maybe having
some kids, being a house husband. No doubt he'll hang out with
his buddies and write some songs. Maybe there'll be some sort
of new band...I just can't envision Chris being alone as a "solo"
artist, without gravitating towards his friends. He will undoubtedly
do stuff w/Matt and Kim, (matt especially, because he Side projects
with the boy often), but whether we will be privy to it will be
an entirely different story.

That's how I'm callin' 'em. Flame me if you must.

First on the break up: I'm kind of glad they did... I'll miss ever seeing

unhappy they should try and make themselves more happy... even if that means
breaking up the best band in the world. But you never know... they might be
back (Like the Ramones) or they could even do a reunion tour in a few
years... I'd never miss seeing that one! When I first heard about the break

else really cared. That was the worst part about the break up.

songs...as for AIC...an interview with Mike Inez(bass)in a guitar mag sez that
AIC are recording too..so..there u go...its' bad enough having a great band
breaking up..that doest mean that other bands will too....Seth..sorry bout
this..

On a SG note..saw MTV news yesterday..saw them interviewing Chris at the
Grammys..
"We will head back to the studios soon.." *sniff*..memories...zero
chance indeed.....

Ok. Quick thoughts. Actually questions.

1. With the splitting up of the band what will happen to the fan club(mail)?

2. Do you think that the band breaking up could have anything to do with the
fact that DOTU only sold 3million copies compared to something like
SUPERUNKNOWN which was multiplatnuim? That maybe they thought they were
losing it?

I think I know the answers I'll get but this was just a thought. MTV kinda
gave me the second idea.

i think soundgarden would be the last band on earth to measure their
success and future on album sales. if that were the case, they would have
quit after ultramega ok. it was chris who said music driven by money
deserves to fail.

Subject: What about the future of rock?

What I wanna know is, in light of the recent breakup, the rumors of other
Seattle-based bands on the skids, and shitty guitar magazines claiming that
"Alternative Music is Dead" (the break-up, I know, they'll display as
"evidence"), does the music I've written, which has a lot of Soundgarden
and Alice in Chains influence, even stand a chance of becoming popular?
This is supposing, of course, that I ever find a band and record it.

My answer? It varies day-to-day. My optimism? The "Alternative" movement
(which has become anything but anymore) will die down (the Alternative
"Spirit" will never pass, as it hasn't for hundreds of years), but after
another 5-10 years of listening to Aerosmith and Van Halen, people will
again become bored of the same old shit and return to the music my
generation has grown to love in the last few years (i.e. the Return of
Disco!)

I figure, maybe punk rock needs to get outta the spotlight for a few years
so we can refocus as musicians instead of trying to be popular and trendy.

Soundgarden was there before alternative became mainstream (and therefore
not alternative). I believe their music will live on forever (after all, I
still here "Rock the Casbaugh" on the radio). If they play with other
projects, I will listen to them; they are all talented musicians whom I
respect very much.

Finally: no more pointing fingers. None of you motherfuckers really know
what the reasons are unless your name is Chris Cornell, Kim Thayill, Ben
Shephard, or Matt Cameron (or maybe if you're name is Susan Silver, I don't
know). I especially do not want to see another fucking message dissing on
one of the greatest bass players on the planet! Yes, Ben had ties with the
band long before he joined, and was probably one of the wisest moves
Soundgarden ever made.

Peace and Soundgarden forever

Subject: Random Thoughts and Notes

Hey everyone...
I was loading up the Unofficial Page, planning to cruise it
for a bit, when the random lyric came up: "We steal that smile from
your face". Truer words have never been spoken. Soundgarden has
stolen the smile from my face, but it is the same smile that they
gave me...so whose smile is it, really?

In reference to the "techno" -ization of music, due to the breakups
and setbacks of prominent hard rock bands....I have to agree. It seems
to be what all the hangers-on are grabbing at. Pretty soon you will
see all these "new" bass & drum bands and techno bands that were
covering Bush and Nirvana a couple months ago come onto MTV. Well,
I must say "fuck it". If rock becomes obscured, I won't give a damn.
I'll play it, I'll write it, I'll love it. I'll play Soundgarden songs
till the day I die, then I'll play 'em some more. For all the people
who are seeing their rock idols fade away and dissipate, do not
despair...stay true to yourself and your music and you'll achieve
happiness. Personally, if it came down to playing music I didn't
like and making a ton of money; and playing music I love and having
to work a shit-ass 9-to-5 job, I would pick the latter. There's no
real debate, in my mind. Trends come and go, but rock never really
dies, does it? We are the children of Soundgarden, and their
music will never die as long as our music lives. Simple as that.

Yes the rise of techno is evident. It is slipping into the mainstream, is
music's purpose is to get people to dance. I dont think so. Is the recent
breakup of SG the first sign of the death of "hard rock" (I use that term
loosly). I dont think so. But take into consideration the fact that Pearl
Jams last album went to numero uno, but then it quickly vanished, and
then SG's last album only debuted at 2 it also vanished. Are people just
getting tired of rock? I see a mergence of technology and your basic
guitar, bass and drums. Bands like Filter and NIN and dare I say Maralyn
Mansan (a group that reminds me of glam), have made use of this facility.
U2's last album wasnt that bad. I'm sure that Soundgardens breakup wasnt
due to what is happening in the music scene, its probably what can we do
next? They have done it all, they got better after each album, though I
liked Down on The Upside I just felt they could have done more,
soundgarden have always broke down barriers, its just now that it felt
like they were behind one. There is only so much you can do with a
guitar. I just feel that techno is gunna be the new kind of disco, and
that there will be a new kind of punk to destroy it. Despite how
technologically it gets, it will eventually return to being just guitar's
and drums. Thats how it all started.

well, the tears have stopped. and the reality of it all seems to be
sinking in. things'll probably never be the same again. me, the
eternal optimist, i guess sometimes to a fault -- i think i'll always
hope in the back of my mind that they'll be a band again. i just
wanna go back -- to 3 yrs ago when i first discovered them, or to
the night back in november when i saw them at the electric factory,
or the day i saw them at lolla in nyc -- those were the 2 greatest
days of my life.

i know some ppl think that a lot of their songs were foretelling - not
to me. i never saw it coming... maybe i just didn't let myself. i've
never been one to think the worst. in butow -- "i've given everything
i need, i'd give you everything i own, i'd give in if it could at least be
ours alone..." Chris could've been saying it to Soundgarden... but
somehow i don't think so.

i don't normally think about how hard it all must be for them
sometimes -- just contending w/ everyday life, which is hard
enough, plus being pressured to sell, sell, sell i'm sure, plus being in
the spotlight. then you work things like personal or internal
problems, possible writer's block, etc. into the equation... but that
still doesn't make the break up any easier to accept.

i'm trying to smile, but i still feel torn apart. the world will never be
the same w/out them together. but we've all got to go on, knowing
that though Soundgarden the band may have died, Soundgarden
the music, the essence, the phenomenon will live on forever through
us, and they'll go on making amazing music and kicking serious
ass wherever they go, whether they do it together or not. i made
that promise to them, and i also promised that i'll make them proud
of me. one day they'll know who i am, one day they'll see what they
in part inspired, and enabled, me to create. listening to
Soundgarden i grew up - not physically but spiritually, mentally...
and i found out that i no longer have idols, but i'll always have
heroes.

Don't know if any of you sommsters from the Miami area caught the SG radio
tribute/special on
94.9 WZTA at 9:00 p.m. tonight - I caught it on tape for anyone who is
interested, but it was nothing major - the songlist included:

Into the Void (Sealth)
Spoonman
Like Suicide (acoustic)
Rusty Cage
Get on the Snake
The Day I Tried to Live
Jesus Christ Pose
Burden In My Hand
She Likes Surprises
Tighter and Tighter

The D.J. was pretty stupid, rambling about how SG was relatively
"unknown" until maybe 1992 when they played Lolla (???!!!!???), he also
followed She Likes Surprises with an announcement saying it was from the
overseas release of DOTU (uhhhhh????),
but there were a few
little interview quips (the Mr. Bunchypants thing, etc.), and only one
commecrcial break. All in all, it was just nice to hear 60 min. of
straight SG on the radio.

Anyone who is interested in the tape of this broadcast, just get in touch
with me personally.

Subject: a day in the life

i am not sure how i would label this phase of the grieving process, but my
mind has been running all day and this is my attempt to put it into words...

art is its most beautiful and most powerful when it is created for the
artist's sake, and not for the audience...We have all seen artists cross
that line, from doing if for themselves, to doing for the audience...it
happens in every form of art, not just music, and it is never
pretty...Soundgarden has touched us all so deeply because we have felt the
genuiness of their words and music, their soulfulness, the deep real
emotion....We have felt that because they have felt that - because it has
been their way of getting through life and adding meaning to their
lives...Chris said making music has been his drug since he was 15...they
*had* to make music, no matter who was listening....that creates art.

alot of us, including me, have been saying "what about us?", but if they are
going to make music just for us, i dont want it...i dont think anyone would
want it...if it doesn't come from their souls, if they don't 100% genuinely
feel it and back it, i dont want it...maybe they decided to stop before they
ended up crossing that line...

people often talk about the trend of liking a bands' early music versus
"their new stuff" - i think there may be a strong reason this happens
sometimes.... for so many bands, the beginning is real and pure and *for
them*...a few people get together to share their need of creating something
- - there is no *us*...then the fans step into the picture, and the publicity
and the money and the attention, which can be great and motivating for
awhile..but quite often, later stuff is no longer created because they have
to create for their own souls, it becomes something they are expected to do,
and it is for *us*...and that often leads to the music being much less
intense, much less unreal, and much less art...

is this all helping me? not really... like everything else in life, we want
things to stay the way they were, for it to be the way it was...and it the
hardest thing in the world to accept that it can't and won't...

i have written this for myself, to help me work it out, to try to deal...if
it reaches anyone out there in addition, great...if not, it still helped me...
and you all have helped me...

Thank you Soundgarden for giving us so much. Everyone feels a little bitter
but I guess it is their lives and they can do whatever they feel, and they
always have and that's one of the best things about Soundgarden.

The best of luck to Chris, Kim, Matt and Ben in whatever they do in the
future. I'm definitely thankful that I got to see them when I had the chance.

BTW, I went to see Tool last night. WOW is all I can say. For Soundgarden
addicts who are wondering what they should be listening to now and haven't
heard Tool before, get a CD of theirs and check it out. Absoloutely
brilliant band.

I really only mention this because there seems to be quite a link between
the bands. At the Soundgarden show there were almost as many Tool shirts as
Soundgarden, and Kim wore a Tool shirt at the Big Day Out Melbourne. And
then last night there were heaps of people with Soundgarden shirts, and I
think Adam Jones has worn Soundgarden T-Shirts at gigs before.

Anyway, keep your head up and be proud of what Soundgarden has given us.

Subject: has is sunk in yet????

yes, this is another post about the break up....surprised?

when i first read the news i cried, got mad, almost became physically ill
and couldn't drive a car, honestly, someone had to drive me to where i had
to go that day. whats scary is that i don't even think this news has
totally sunk in yet. prior to the ANNOUNCEMENT, things in sg land were
pretty low profile, they were in between making albums and on vacation and
we sort of expected not to hear or see them on the scene for a while. the
point here is that, for the time being, all of our albums would have been
able to hold us up for awhile until the next one would have been released.

now i don't know about you all (though i'm pretty sure this applies) but
every year or 2 every inch of my being, like a god damn biological clock,
begins to crave a new sg album. it can't wait for the sweet ritual of
going to the record store, seeing the new cover, ripping off the plastic,
taking out the cd, popping it in the stereo and just sitting back and
breaking it in. this clock of mine will begin ticking in about jan.98 (if
they would have been together still i would imagine the new album would
have come out sometime that year) and it will tick and tock and wait for
that new album, and there will be NOTHING, nothing to fulfill it. i think
then i will truly feel the impact of this split. i think then i will truly
realize to the full depths what a loss this was. cuz right now, i keep
reading and seeing that SOUNDGARDEN BROKE UP but still, it has not sunk in
and won't until in three years i still wait for new sg and am left empty.

i'll survive, i mean they made 6 INCREDIBLE albums that have the
capability of holding me over for the rest of my life. but....it'll still
be a very sad, sad day. and i sure hope this list is still here when that
clock goes off, cuz god knows only you people can understand. i can just
imagine the reactions of an outsider, who doesn't get it *now* that they
broke up...can u imagine in a couple of years?? "they're just a band and
for god's sake they broke up 3 years ago, get over it"(hearing my mother's
voice attatched to those words...but if i'm still living at home in 3
years then i deserve it!!!!)

eternally grateful for this list,
