Subject: drinking/smoking

Regarding the drinking/smoking posts yesterday... I sent a similar response
last time we had this debate and I believe I got flamed for it, but here it
again in brief. Of course we all care about CC and don't want him to hurt
himself and his amazing voice, however I get angry that some of you go off
because he smokes and drinks and he will lose his voice and then we can't
listen to SG anymore, or words to that effect. Chris is a grown man, and
just because his songs appeal to all of us, does not mean that he writes and
sings and plays for all of us. I certainly hope for his sake that he does
these things because he loves to do them. For this reason alone Chris can do
whatever he wants to do to his body, and besides the concern for his health
because you care about him, I am sure he knows exactly what he is doing. I
just find the whole thing ridiculous. Leave the man alone, there are worse
things he could be doing...

Subject: Kevin Westenberg interview

I have no idea if anyone has come across this, but since no one's ever
mentioned it on the list (I think)...
There's a pretty interesting interview with Kevin Westenberg (who did cover
shots for DOTU among others) on the I-Music site (not the SG one), and he
talks about SG quite a bit....

- -----------------------------------------
I-Music: Tell me about this photo.

I-Music: The Black Hole Sun photo for Soundgarden is one of my
favorites of yours.

KW: Yeah, that's Serril, he's a 75 year old Jewish man we hired from
the Ugly Agency in London. There's an agency just for ugly people and
freaks of nature sort of people that are anti-models basically. You
see a lot of it in fashion magazines now because it has become
fashionable. Serril was really quite a piece of work, he escaped from
Nazi camp when he was 16 I think, his parents were gassed and he
escaped and has been living in London since. He was brilliant -- did
anything we wanted him to do. There were loads of pictures of him in
the package.

When they toured for Superunkown, I did a slide show behind them for
Black Hole Sun there were quite a few of Serril. Jez Pierce who is the
Art Director for A&M in London and I worked on that together, without
Soundgarden's involvement, because when you're working with
Soundgarden they want to see 10 -20 ideas on covers, they just pointed
to that one immediately which was great.

I: What's the light behind him?

KW: It's a blast of light behind him on the wall. It's not something
that he's wearing, it's not coming out of him, it's projected behind
him.

I: Do you find that since you work for Soundgarden so regularly that
you're becoming more of a role in their image?

KW; No, not at all. They are so independent, in the best way. Each of
them has an opinion, which is rare. Normally it's one person that says
"no its going to be this way." There's two reasons I like working with
them. First is because they are so independent and completely
democratic. Also none of them do drugs and none of them are into
abuse. And it's the same for Trent, he doesn't do drugs. Both bands
are kind of similar because they are both intelligent as bands as well
as individuals, it makes a huge difference when you're dealing with
people on a regular basis. -

I still think it is a funky picture and I am not doubting that SG might
hate photo shoots. I think Gonzo made a good point, of the 12 months out of
the year there are only 2 shots of the band the rest are Chris. I'm not
against looking at CC pictures BUTT it is a Soundgarden calendar! So why
not have more group shots or at least more individual shots of the other
three members. And take a bit more care in selecting them. Just look at
Seth's page and all the pix available. Surely there are better pictures
they could use that don't make them look like a dork, a mad monk, a serial
killer and a truck driver. And why is it Chris' pictures outnumber the rest
of them in most articles, calendars etc.?? Is he more available to the
press, is that who they ask for being the front man? or because more people
want to see Chris as opposed to the other three? toni

like. I haven't been to the Soundgarden website(s) yet so I can't comment if
any of them have confirmed or denied this rumor. I am taking this as
rumor until I hear otherwise. The DJ this morning played 2 SG songs in a

Hi all,

Most of you probably don't know me, my name is Jon Hilgreen. I am
Soundgarden's biggest fan. I am not here to argue this fact, but I am. I
have been aquaintences of the band for over eight years.

I heard on my local radio station, WEDG-103.3-FM, The Edge in Buffalo, NY
that there was rumor that Soundgarden had broken up for amicable reasons.
This was not confirmed by A&M yet though.

I got on the horn and call Susan Silver's office and spoke to Wendy she
confirmed this sad rumor to be true. I asked her to pass on a message to
Susan and the band that I thank them, and that they have been a big
personal influence on my life.

I am sad.

I know I broke the rules about sending to the digest, I am sorry Seth. But
I didn't want the speculations to fly, I wanted other true fans like myself
to know. Seth can you add me back on the digest? I would like to follow
this thread. (I have been off the list for a bit due to business.)

Ok ok ok ok.

Soundgarden is not dead. We still have 5 excellent albums, b-sides, eps to
keep us
listening for the rest of our lives. That is much more than many other
bands gone by have left us. I would rather have them quit while they're
ahead than slink back into nothingness with material they wouldn't have
felt passionate about producing if they felt forced to stay in soundgarden
or go on stage playing 'greatest hits' shows, pleasing the audiences, but
not satisfying themselves creatively.

So light some candles, listen to everything you have in a row, feel good
about the times gone by, start rediscovering the albums, and feel good
about the point that according to everything we've heard or read that they
are in fact still friends and are still going to be active. We have Hater,
the much anticipated Chris Cornell solo record that we all hope will come
out, WWC., Devilhead... etc etc etc. It's not over. It's just a big huge
chapter thats ending.

this is a surprise though... and i still am hoping in the back of my brain
that they are being somehow misquoted or that the management got something
wrong. but the logical part of my brain says it's over for now.

MOTHERFUCKER!!!!

I couldn't believe the news when I heard it on the radio...I went
straight to the page when I got home...This is one of the worst
losses I have ever experienced. It seems like Soundgarden is a part
of me, and them breaking up just didn't seem to happen. They were
always laughing having a good time...and now it's gone. FUCK!
It's just not fair...why the hell are bands like Bush still around
when SG breaks up...I know I sound like a motherfuckin whiner, but
God, Sg meant so much to me.

Can't we beseech them as fans, can't anything turn this shit around?
For all the kids who never got to experience a show, for all the
people who find a musical fulfillment in them, what can we do?
The foremost answer seems to be "nothing". How I wish that they
had some other avenue than this. Anything. I'd have waited 5 goddamn
years for the next album, if that's how much they needed to cool
off. I know it had to end sometime, but this is just too soon.

Soundgarden was magic. Soundgarden is magic.

Soundgarden has broken up. I asked where the source of the information
came from and she said from the label--A&M. Then, switched on the radio =
and there was an announcement with the same info. DJ said there were =
*rumors* from A&M that Chris is working on a new solo album, and as for =
Matt and Ben, no word. I forget what she said about Kim, but obviously, =
for all four of them, the info is pretty vague.

Fuck.

we had this thread a while back, and i had kinda/sorta agreed with the
sentiment... when our intrepid toni cashed in her 401k to fly to seattle
and atlanta... some thought she was slightly nuts (not me ;-)), and then
someone posted about how she missed seeing her very favorite band play and
then the band broke up... and i had *vowed* that after a period of time
where i didn't go see some bands/tours i now regret (i NEVER got to see
nirvana, i was in the middle east, we were going to fly to england to see
them at reading and just didn't; i spent most of 92 trying to get to
europe to see pearl jam and i never got there; i didn't go see the
'green' tour in london... etc etc etc etc)...

anyway, i didn't go to chicago despite having TICKETS and everything,
the excuse at the time was that i spent my money flying down to san
francisco to see the bridge benefit concerts, the real reason was that i
was pissed at the sg, and NOW i am of course KICKING myself for not going!

never, never, never EVER again will i pass up a chance to see a band i
love. </me breaks out the savings account for pj tour 97, whereverthefuck
they play>

i just thank the goddess that i got to see the december shows... or i
would be slitting my wrists right now. ;-(

this is a lesson... i'm trying to take it as a lesson....

shock and my hands are shaking while I type this. This is horrible. I'm
crying right now and I don't know what to do. Somebody please say something

Subject: so much to say...

hi all...

a while back someone asked:
>what does the song 4th of July and Beyond the wheel mean does
>any1 know?

well they mean whatever you want them to mean. :) "4th of July" is
one of my favorite Sg songs, and it's also personally significant to
me cause it's always reminded me of a dream i had yrs & yrs
back... it was like deja vu when i first heard it. i think chris, or the
character, whoever, is only dreaming... and it's one of those dreams
where you're in it and you really feel like you're experiencing it all,
and you can control what you're doing but you don't know that it's
not real.

and this sort of ties in w/ something someone else said a while
back:
>Cornell's lyrics are almost like a dialog between the two albums

b/c he wakes up and realizes that it was all just a dream, he was
having a nightmare that the world was ending... and then the next
song is "half," which, if you want to interpret it that way, ties in b/c it
could be the character's response to the dream -- he's awake and
alive and the world *hasn't* ended - we still have half a chance.
it's all in how you interpret it - you could link a lot of other songs on
SU to this theme - "superunknown," BHS, "limo wreck."

i've never thought about how songs on SU & DOTU or any of the
others could be linked... in a way i do think that DOTU is an
answer to SU... there was a pervading sense of lonliness and being
lost and angry and confused on SU, whereas on DOTU it was
anger... but a different kind than on SU... less a brooding but more
of a fighting-back anger, and also courage and hope, even
optimism. what's everybody else think???

and somebody else asked a while back:
>am i the *only* one to consider DOTU the best Sg album ever?

no!!! of course not! :-) for me it's a tie between DOTU & SU.
DOTU isn't just one of the best Sg albums ever, it's one of the best
*albums* ever! <----- imo, imo, imo. ;-) consider this - it's got
everything... "ty cobb," which sounds like a mix of punk, bluegrass
& "the devil went down to georgia"... the gothic "applebite"... sheer
beauty & chris' poetic lyrics (butow & "Boot camp")... trippy riffs
(butow & "pretty noose")... glommy ballads ("zero chance," "tighter
& tighter")... quintessential Sg & imo, everything a rock song
should be - "pretty noose." need i say more!?! :-)

Am I the only one who feels like he or she is going to cry?

Today I logged onto The Nexus to have a friend tell me he was
informed from a radio station where he lives (Morrisonville, NY) that
Soundgarden broke up. I had no reason to doubt him, he doesn't seem like
the type that would lie to me. I've had WAY, WAY, WAY too many
"Soundgarden broke up" or "Chris Cornell got shot" jokes played on me over
the years to believe it.

But I log on to Hudson Valley to check the web page and find it is
indeed true.

I'm shocked, but amazingly enough, not that shocked. That whole
little "this is Soundgarden's last tour until the next century" thing.
They've been VERY low key with the release of DOTU. I remember when
Superunknown came out. publicity everywhere, new shirts, and all kinds of
merchandising, LOTS of touring. With DOTU they seemed low key, and they
didn't do as much advertising or merchandising, don't you think?

I can't believe it though. I am listening to DOTU right now. I
am thankful that, while I have remained a loyal Soundgarden fan as of five
years next month, I'm not quite as "obsessed" as I once was. I have a ton
of favorite bands now: Helmet, Jawbox, Deftones, and my newest, Ben Folds
Five. Soundgarden is just one of the many bands I love. So it's not that
bad. And I'm sure the members of SG will go on to other great bands. But
I feel horrible. I can't believe this has happened.

What's going to happen to the mailing list? Will it remain
online? Because I know when Kyuss broke up, the administrator took down
that list.

I can't believe it, but at the same time, it doesn't seem that
hard to believe.

Sorry to clog up all your mailboxes, but I'm sure we all feel the
same way and we will all remember the great times we had because of
Soundgarden. I know I will. I'll remember all the shows, meeting
Shroom..just..I don't know..this band is very special to me. I'm not mad.
Right now I am too shocked to be mad.

yeah, but they are so *not*....i can name a bunch of bands that i love and
say that they are really "just a band"...but to most of us on this list,
Soundgarden has been a way of life, a focus of attention, an obsession,
has brought a universe full of meaning to our lives, has been a place to
turn in 'times of trouble', and if that wasn't enough, they are ALSO the
reason that we are here, that so many of us have met...i have friends now
from this list that I would die without, and i NEVER would have met them
without Soundgarden...

and for that, i am grateful...and for getting to finally meet SG after 10
years, i am grateful...

but there is no way that i can think of them as just a band...NEVER....i
