What makes me sad is that I've never seen SG live, and by the time I do
Chris may not be able to pull off some of his trademark high notes from
songs like outshined, head Injury, and I Awake (it's just a fantasy of mine
that I will get to see I Awake performed live someday. I know It probobly
won't happen). If chris is forced to quit someday, I won't leave SG, but you
know it will never be the same. On a slightly different note, has anyone
else gone through a phase where you must buy every SG related Item that
passes through you range of sight? I wen't out today to a store like to
Wal-mart planning to buy shoes and Batteries, but as I was heading for the
check out I see a rack of shirts, one of which was a SG shirt I didn't have.
I picked it up and headed for the counter. There was nothin to think about.
If i didnt have enough money for the shoes, too bad.
I realize this could be dangerous, but I don't see an end to this
obsession. Can anyone else ralate to this?

I recently emailed Morat (Kerrang journalist who interviewd Chris in Oz) and
asked if he had any info on the tattoo. (Obsessed, moi?)I didn't really
expect him to reply but he did - and he also offered to send me more Chris
info. Morat, you are a prince among men :-)

ROLE MODELS????

Am i the only one out there that thinks that musicians should make music,
not try to raise everybodys' kids? Just let them be, and ask yourself: do
i need a role model? why?.......

Anyway, I promissed to all that i would post my review of SOUNDGARDENs'
concert at Lollapalooza 96 in Quebec city last summer....
Yes, i know i'm way late... but i just got here. Trust me, if i would have
found this cool place earlier, you guys would have had a review the next
day....
Here goes..... They played a set that lasted about 70 minutes or so... They
played late in the evening, just before Metallica closed the day... At that
time, there was about 30000 fans goin' wild.....it was crazy.... Anyway,
what really surprised me was the fact that they didn't play a whole lot of
songs from Down on the Upside, leaving way to songs from Ultramega-OK and
Louder than Love.....which was way cool.... Chris also did a solo version
of BLACK HOLE SUN which was also pretty cool... Of course, they also
played classics like SPOONMAN, JESUS CHRIST POSE... Before they started,
the sky really got clouded and it was bound to start raining, which
prompted Chris to say hi to the croud this way: "This weather makes us feel
right at home... even though we're miles away..." Anyway, BEN started the
show being as pissed as i ever saw someone being pissed. I'm not sure what
happened, but we weren't gettin' any bass for about the first 10 minutes of
the show... and Ben realised it soon enough!!! He just threw his bass in
the back of stage, as he was visibly VERY mad at some technicians...
Moments later, everything was in order and "the show went on".... but the
damage was done... Ben looked real pissed throughout the whole set... you
know, like he just didn't want to be there... But that's not what i want
you guys to remember.....just remember it was the best damn show i had seen
in quite some time!!!!

As ya'll probably noticed, i don't write reviews everyday... so sorry if
it's not very detailed and complete... if you have any questions, e-mail
me. As Rachel knows, i really like gettin' mail.....

See you guys later!!!!

....God knows i'm gone....and i just want you to come on down......come on
down....-Mad Season (yeah, i know its not a Soundgarden lyric... variety
never hurt anybody....)

Is there a definitive Soundgarden song? Not for me, there isn't. I haven't
even got an all time *favourite* Sg song - they change all the time. That's
what I love about Soundgarden. They are virtually impossible to label. When
people ask me, 'So what are they like then?' I either say (lamely) "they
rock!" or I lend 'em a tape!

Of course I can't know for sure, but I can't imagine the band wanting to be
linked to one song. Especially BHS :-) As for JCP, Chris once said he he
considered it to be completely atypical of Soundgarden. Ben says it's fast
funk! So there you go :-)

Incidentally, is any one else totally in love with Soundgarden's version of
Thank You Falletin Me Be Mice Elf? I can't stop playing it. It's everything
rock should be (*now* who's talking 'definitive', Deb? ;-)- great guitar,
grinding rhythym, amazing vocals. And every great rock song should include
lyrics about the devil and making lurrrrrve! The only thing wrong with it is
Soundgarden didn't write it!

It's also been a issue that I've thought about, but I think when the song
say that Lyric:Cornell means that the song's lyrics is written by Chris not
that it's also sang by Chris. I think this is logical. But I'm still not
sure about the music bit. By the way tonight I just bought a bootleg from
SG called The Garden Grows, it's double CD it kicks ass.

I didn't post the original message but I went and tried it immediately, I
didn't make about anything from the backward recording but it does sound
stannic but the song does sound stannic anyway. About how to do this, if
you have a Creative Sound Blaster (original) with the software installed
it's going to be easy, using the Wave Studio, this isn't the place to
explain this if you want more info email me.

Whilst backstage at Ben Harper, I met the man who helped bring out SG
to Australia, he's the guy who takes them to great places to crazy
stuff, anyway maybe you guys already know this but he took SG base
jumping. He said Matt was like "gimme, gimme, gimmme" in regards to
doing adrenalin pumping stuff, which was great to hear b/c i too am
an adrenalin freak :) I asked him whether Ben's occasional stage
craziness was the true him. he just looked at me and said "yeah, he's
nuts, but an excellent musician" ..how true!!
I also asked about Chris's tattoo, he said "yeah, very secretive.
Chris doesn't talk much but i know it was his own design"

Sorry to anyone who finds this extremely boring and very non-music
related but I just had to get it out!!

hey everybody ---

first off i wanna know... Sg was on 'Love Line'? no, it can't be! is
this for real... somebody out there must know...

>what does "Music: Shepherd; Lyrics: Cornell" mean exactly?

well, it just means that Ben wrote the music & Chris wrote the
lyrics. and if someone else sang the song or had vocals on it, that
would be indicated somewhere. "lyrics" means that they wrote
them, not that they sang.

>not one day goes by that i don't listen to Sg incessantly. Anyone

yep, me. i listen to Sg everyday, mostly stuff off DOTU or SU. i
don't think i could get thru the day w/out listening to "Ty Cobb" in
the morning before going to school. ;-)

well i really want to write more, i've got *LOTS* to say but
i've got a pretty bad headache right now, so... more later. :-)

Responding to KAISERVRBL@aol.com

Hey, I am a new subscriber. I have been listening to Soundagden only since
SU. However, I am now a great fan of Soundagrden and think they are the
best band. Lately, for the pat few months I have been listening to SG
everyday also. I do not go one day without hearing SG or Temple of the
Dog. I cannot get enough of Chris' voice.

I listen to Alice in Chains often too but not as often and as concentrated
as I listening to SG. I honestly don't think there is anything wrong with
it. I used to think there wa something wrong with it and I thought I was
obsessed. But, I realized that SG just kicks serious ass with Chris' and
the rest of the bands musical talents. I am especially fond of Chris'
voice because he sounds like he is not even trying. Alot of other bands
SOUND like they try to hard and you can hear it because it is so obvious.
Every lyric uttered from that man's vocal cords, through his mouth and from
his lips sound like the words themselves. There is so much feeling in his
voice it is amazing!! I am blown away everytime!!!

Oh, and, I like your e-mail address, Kaiser Soze: Verbal Kint, very cool!!
I love that movie!!

Hi there sommspeople,
I've been lurking around this webpage for awhile and only
now do I have the courage to brave the flamefest in search of
knowledge. I have a few questions which I hope some of you guys
can answer. Please don't thrash me too hard if the answers are
available somewhere on Seth's page...you gotta admit, there's a
huge amount of info there and I haven't been able to look at it
all in the 6 months or so I've been checking it out.
There has been a lot of discussion about the unusual time
signatures of certain songs by all you drummers out there. What I
want to know is, which member of the band do you think is responsible
for coming up with rhythms such as 15/8 (limo wreck) and 9/8 (never
the machine forever). I read somewhere that Matt is the only one
who knows music theory and when presented with a song like NTMF, is
pretty surprised. Lucky for us, Mr. Cameron is not fazed by
such intricate rhythms. I was wondering if it was Kim who writes
a lot of the strange time signature music, perhaps due to his Eastern
heritage. 9/8 is a very common rhythm in the middle east, for
example, but most "western" people are more accustomed to 3/4 and
4/4. Any opinions?
Another hot topic on the list is Chris' voice. I know that
cigarettes and booze take their toll, but here's a question for you
trained singers out there. Is Chris shredding his vocal cords by
making them emit that unearthly trumpet-like howl (which is...I
guess I have to say its THE coolest sound I have ever heard)? Or
is this a normal, stress-free sound for him? Even if he quit smoking
today, are his vocal cords still toast in the future? As for the
effects of smoking and drinking, I think a tough-love approach is
called for. The other members of the band should obtain a Keith
Richards record, or a Stones record that features Keith singing.
Preferably one that has not been doctored up in the studio. Strap
Chris into a chair, rig the Stones record to play in a constant loop,
and make him listen to the thing for a whole damn day. Hey Chris...
keep smoking and drinking, and your voice might be as good as
Keith's someday!!! <<<shudder>>>.
I have some more questions, but I think you've heard
enough from me today.

....and I sharpened my wits on a dead man's skull....

Subject: Soundgarden/The Doors

It was uncanny!! Has anyone ever seen the movie The Doors starring Val
Kilmer? Well, let me tell you the lyrics and the things that went on in
thaa movie
reminded me so much of Soundgarden. The following are a few examples:
- --in some of the songs Morrison mentions "snake" which is a very popular
word for Chris!!
- --there is a desert scene in the movie that reminds me of "Burden in My
Hand" video.
- --Jim is wearing black as Chris does but only for a few seconds.
- --In "Burden" Chris sings "oh no, there she goes, out in the sunshine, sun
is mine, sun is mine". In this desert scene Jim's girlfriend is dancing in
the sun while he is following a naked indian into a red background.
- --Jim mentions liar in his songs as does Chris

You just have to rent this movie and tell me if I am wrong. For those who
have seen it, What do you think? Has The Doors influenced Soundgarden or
just Chris, or what? This is freaky if I am wrong!!

Subject: Re: No Subject

even if chris stops smoking his vocal cords will be in bad condishon. he
tore them once before i think. and i dont think somking or drinking will
effect his singing. if u listen to the earlyer albums u can hear how he is
straning his voice, and thats y if he keeps on screaming that hard when he
sings ( not that i dont love the way he sings ) he will tare them again and
before u know it he will not be able to sing.

yeah i can releate if i see somthing that has to do with SG i have to buy it
, and i also hope i get to see SG live before Chris has another vocal prob.
and cant sing anymore ( that would be the most horrible thing in the world ).
