hey folks...
Vince brought up an interesting point that I've always
kinda wondered about myself... when you read the credits
to a song, what exactly was their contribution to the
whole process? take "Dusty" - lyrics by Cornell, music
by Shepherd... does this mean Ben wrote/arranged ALL the
music for the song, including drum tracks, rhythm guitar
parts, even vocal lines? I don't think that's what it
means, but it kinda sounds that way... so has Matt only
written drum tracks for songs in which his name appears
in the credits? in that respect, the credits can be
rather vague... I always figured the credit just went
to whomever came up with the bulk of the song... the
main riff, or overall sound...
anyone know for sure how they credit the writers?

Subject: a week in seattle with the ktms [LONG]

well, hello list. since we couldn't send out posts while our festivities
were taking place, here's a short summary of what life is like with the ktms
in town. if you don't care, delete now. ;->

thursday: come home from two weeks on the road, exhausted. clean house in
preparation for ktms invasion. talk to shroom on phone. sleep.

friday: sleep. (hey, i know i'm not getting any this week!) prepare for
ktms invasion (read: buy beer). argue with aaron as to who is picking up
seth at the airport.

saturday: argue some more about who is picking seth up from the airport.
around 5pm, the invasion begins. shroom and dena with a lovely birthday
present (THANK YOU AGAIN!!!) for me, and vikki. they have just cleaned out
a cool poster store downtown. (i can't find shroom's present, but more on
that later.) chris mansfield, andy dunn, bonnie and jen also arrive. we
are waiting for the thug and the listadmin. they are late. we start to
imagine that aaron has 1) dragged seth to the ok before coming to my house;
2) they have run into chris cornell at the airport and he has invited him
over; 3) etc. aaron finally rings the buzzer and we all hide in a closet
for some reason. we talk a lot about what we are going to do. we order
pizza for those who haven't eaten, and we go off to see the fastbacks at the
crocodile cafe. it is packed. seth just got here, yet he runs into people
he knows waiting in line for the bar. i run into eddie vedder for the
first time after two years of living in seattle and then have to go talk to
him because i have an audience of ten watching my every move, and who refuse
to NOT let me go and talk to him because they'll have to listen to me
kicking myself in the butt for the next six months if i don't. i do. eddie
is charming, i am flabbergasted, i give him my prized pete townshend pin and
we talk about the who. i am flabbergasted. then, the ktms goes to watch
the fastbacks kick serious butt. i drink mass quantities. after the
show, i have to re-enact my convo with eddie in the parking lot since
everyone was out of earshot. we almost get shot by some lunatic in the
apartment building next to the lot. go to sleep around 4am.

sunday: breakfast at the Bumbershoot Memorial Denny's on Mercer St. Then,
everyone waits for me to start my car and we go off to the best store in the
seattle area for sg stuff, love music. shroom is on the spot with the video
camera. the guy who works there (they are all HUGE sg fans, really cool
people) is amused, but i'd warned him this was going to happen. we scour
the store for items we want before vikki shows up and cleans it out. ;->
seth takes pictures of the legendary jcp candle. we drool over the candle.
we clean out the store of all related sg items, then head for the sound
garden sculpture. seth takes some pictures. that evening, we commandeer
the best part of the balcony at RKCNDY and watch the screaming trees and TAD
(as well as jack endino's brand-new band) kick serious butt. quote of the
night was from tad: "thank you for coming.... thank the rest of you for
breathing hard." seth, andrea and i observe a Woo Girl [tm] and ponder her
existence. andrea: "i wonder if she ever, like reads a newspaper or
anything..." seth: "i bet she has a lot of sex." after the show, we walk
miles to the hurricane, watch the degenerate population of seattle, and eat
really bad food. no drinking tonight, it was an all-ages show. go to sleep
around 4am.

monday: i have the day off in honor of the invasion. get up and go to west
seattle. eat at the listmeister's favorite restaurant, boston market. seth
takes some pictures. shroom and dena get to see what is so gorgeous about
west seattle (and no, it's NOT chris cornell's house.) seth skips rocks on
the beach (the multi-talented list admin!) shroom takes really amusing
video footage. we learn that seth has never seen "singles". in the
afternoon, we go to discovery park and watch dena reenact the 'hunger
strike' video. seth takes some pictures. we watch the video of the last
ktms-fest, watch a video of shroom's house (including the soundgarden shrine
in her room). then, we go to a mexican restaurant where we drink lots. we
come back to my apartment and watch the rocky horror version of "singles"
(yes, we HAVE seen this too many times.) dena kindly points out stone
gossard's two lines in the movie, which i've never noticed before. then,
everyone goes out to watch the comet while i have to go to sleep so i can
get up for work the next day. at 4:30 am, they're still not back. i am
jealous. ;-(

tuesday: a GORGEOUS seattle day, shroom and dena take seth to gasworks
park. they will be meeting me for lunch later; dena leaves for home that
night. shroom is staying at my house. we meet for lunch and go to the
croc, then hit the sub pop megamart where seth buys a pigeonhed shirt, i buy
an AMAZING charles peterson soundgarden poster, shroom gets a WWC single.
then they go off to sightsee and take dena to the airport, i get to go back
to work. i come home that night and an hour later they all show up,
INCLUDING dena. whoops ;-> she is on the first flight for the next day.
i now have to house shroom, dena AND seth. ;-> there's some 'super-secret'
show tonight but none of us can be bothered: "is it soundgarden? no. is it
pearl jam? no. then who cares?!" the phone rings for seth and it's a
familiar voice. when he gets off, we learn that jack endino just called
him. seth is shaking his head at this week so far: "laura from the fan
club, eddie frickin' vedder and jack frickin' endino!". we go eat dinner
and REALLY drink a lot; get to sleep by around 2.

wednesday: i get up at 6:30 to say goodbye to dena. shroom takes dena to
the airport, except that dena is driving and she gets on I-5 NORTH instead
of south. whoops ;-) i get up when shroom gets back, say goodbye to her,
go to work, hung over as hell. seth gets back around 9pm and is answreing
his email (or so i think); i go and read a book and figure, wow, an early
night with no alcohol! wrong. around 11 seth leans over and goes, 'hey,
wanna go to the ok at midnight with aaron?' so i was wrong about the early
night and the alcohol. ben shepherd is in what he terms his "johnny cash"
phase. i get into an argument with him over which is better, "raw power"
(my pick) or "funhouse" (his pick). oh well, there's no accounting for
taste, i suppose. i wont relate the rest of the evening. ;-> get home
around 3 again.

thursday: i barely remember at this point, except that after work i went
out with a bunch of people who got laid off and got drunk with them. i'm
hoping for an early night, except that when seth gets back, we stay up until
3am watching soundgarden videos and pearl jam at the pink pop festival.

friday: another blur. we are all meeting that evening for dinner at
the two bells (it jsut happens to be the closest place i can think of
to the croc, and i dont' want mexican food AGAIN). we go to the croc
and watch the supersuckers. they were fine, until they did their
country set. then, we head for the BMD (bumbershoot memorial denny's)
for french fries, except that we're all so hungry we're eating full
meals. bonnie charms us with her rendition of the new blur single.
come back and watch videos again; we were gonna stay up all night but
only made it until 4am.

saturday: take the listadmin to the airport. come home and sleep. i don't
get my dishes done until monday, and the recycling box full of beer bottles
is STILL in the kitchen....

soon to come: the KTMS in Seattle Web Site, featuring the Seth Perlman Pic
of the Day! This week: seth smells the gold vinyl BMF!

Vince, if your really just yanking our chain I apologize for replying like
a dumb ass, but if your serious.....it means the music was *written* by so
and so. Lets say Chris is alone in his quiet beach house hide away with his
dog and his guitar. He spills his cranberry vodka and gets mad and starts
ferociously jamming out> He comes up with a cool sounding riff, he toys
around with it for awhile and comes up with a killer song.

The lyrics of this will-be-a-killer-song are *written* by, lets say Ben.
Ben maybe had a shitty time in Hawaii on tour and hes just sick of the whole
tour thing and so he writes about how pissed off he was that one day
and......wala, youve got the lyrics to Chris's music! (well, this is a
figment of my over saturated with Soundgarden imagination)! Ya see??

Its not about who plays or sings them on the album. I still think your just
bullshitting about that, right? 8)....

The movie is "Lost Angels" starring Adrock of the Beastie Boys.

Its on one of the Outshined singles. The original was by 'Budgie' and I
think its on their self-titled album.

Vince, don't sweat it.Carol, did provide you with an answer. She's cool.
"Music: Shepherd; this means that Ben wrote the music for the song called
"Switch Opens".
"Lyrics: Cornell" this means that Chris penned the lyrics to the song called
"Switch Opens"
In Soundgarden,Chris is the main Vocalist for the band.He is the
front man.Chris sings all the songs except for the occasionally one.
for example; On Superunknown Ben sings on Half, and on UltraMega OK,Hiro
sang on Power trip.
No need to feel foolish about asking a question,Talk to ya later.

Subject: 665->667 HIDDEN MESSAGE

a while ago, SOMEONE on the list posted how they had used their computer to
play 665->667 backwards and discovered a secret 'satanic' message.

I didn't see anyone mention this before, in the recent issue of that Guitar
World magazine, there is a small section about 665-667 where two people named
Matt Brown and Tommy Smith had used their computer to discover the hidden
backward lyrics. I am first of all wondering if the two people that got
published in the magazine are the same that are on the somms list????

and also, Kim replied to their letter, pretty neat-o eh..
well this is what he said:
"The song was a total spoof on the whole backmasking thing. Since we were
teenagers, we knoew about backward masking on Led Zeppelin and Beatles
albums. We just flipped the tape over and recorded Chris singing backward.
"My sweet Santa, oh my sweet Santa. I miss you. What are you bringing me
this year? The Grinch tried to spoil things for you, but you showed him!'
It's an ode to Santa, not Satan."

so who posted about this originally? and how exactly did u do it again in
case i decide to listen to it someday..

hard to say, toni. I don't think any of the guys would want or
choose to be a role model for anyone. for the most part I believe that
they write and record music only to soothe their owns souls, not to
provide some sort of example or outline some sort of rule book on how to
live your life. furthermore, I think it would be hard for four men such as
themselves, considering the depth of their character and experiences, to
even be perceived as role models. none of us know enough about them to
want to be like them, at least on a personal level. and nor should we.

having said that, I'm sure that in some ways they would like to be
an inspiration to their audience; or even to raise the level of awareness
of some of their listeners. we gain much of our own awareness of our
environment through some media source (albeit a diluted awareness), so why
not through soundgarden's music? imho it would be easier (and more
morally sound) to provide a different perspective or voice on an issue
than to try change or mold a person's viewpoint into your own, and this
seems to be the route taken by the band. I know my own thinking has been
influenced through their lyrics and the views they reveal during
interviews. and even though they are not a truly political band with some
sort of real agenda, I think that all their listeners must be influenced
on an intellectual level at some time by their music; not just on the
emotional level which is so much more immeadiate.

in the end the band promotes thinking and individuality; thinking
for yourself rather than letting someone else do it for you. if that is
the way you live your life then you are missing the point.
