Hey fellow SOMMSters.

Couple things today -=20

First, did anyone happen to catch Soundgarden when they were on Love Line
quite a while back?? If anyone managed to record the show, I would *great=
ly*
appreciate a copy, and should be able to find something to trade in retur=
n.

Secondly, I had two dreams last night, both of which I was quite disappoi=
nted
to awaken from. The first one I happened to be toodling around Down in th=
e
Valley (the closest semi-indie store to where I live) and, of course, was
digging through the Soundgarden section and pulling out everything I didn=
't
have. In there I found a vinyl single with Chris on the cover called "You=
 Are
My Sunshine." I flipped over to the back side and saw the recording conta=
ined
to songs sung by Chris - a strictly vocal recording - which included "You=
 Are
My Sunshine" and "Hush Little Baby." Now, even if I did find this a bit
ridiculous, I was very happy with my find and after I picked up a copy of
Tori Amos' Boys For Pele on green vinyl, I paid the $1.99 for the single =
and
the $12.99 for the Tori album and rushed home to tell everyone what I fou=
nd.

The second dream was a bit more realistic, and absolutely adorable. I was=
 in
a dressing room - actually, my view of the dressing room was from the top=
s of
the stalls, and I was looking down inside the stalls to see the men insid=
e
them dressing. I could also see myself leaning against the wall across fr=
om
the stalls. Anyway, Ben was in the left stall (towards which I was angled=
 to
have a better view into) and Matt was in the right stall, and they were b=
oth
changing into tuxedos. While they changed, the two of them and myself (th=
e
one leaning against the wall) were having some kind of conversation. I ca=
n't
remember exactly what the hell we were talking about, but I'll try to mak=
e
sense of it. The following is what I could remember of the conversation:

BEN: Damn pins.

MATT: Ouch. Another one in the ass.

BEN: (talking to me) Where're we headed after this?

ME: Not sure. I have to get some cash and then drop off this film to get
developed. I should also pick up a frame.

BEN: So, someplace like GAP or Contempo?

ME: No, dearie. GAP and Contempo are clothing stores.

BEN: Oh.=20

MATT: Ouch!! Damn these pins. Damn them all to Hell.

BEN: So when do you think we should be leaving?

MATT: I'm starving.

ME: I'm not sure. Maybe around 2:00.=20

MATT: When can we eat?

ME: When we leave we'll get some food.=20

Ben and Matt both finished dressing at the same time and stepped out of t=
heir
dressing stalls. When they both came in front of the mirror to look
themselves over, Matt slipped and fell hard on his ass and Ben started
laughing. Okay - it sounds deathly stupid when I describe it, but it was
really cute. The conversation we really had was much more in depth (for s=
ome
reason I can't help shaking the feeling that we talked about dating
services), and I'm sure Ben knows that GAP and Contempo are both clothing
stores in real life. I just thought it was cute.=20

Well, that's all I have to say for now.=20

Has anyone else noticed that Kim doesn't look like he's aged a day since
'89??

<Burden in My Hand, Overfloater, etc.) but it is nothing close to the

There has been much talk over the last year about DOTU in reference to it
not rocking like BMF or SU. Consider this arbitrary selection of songs:
1. Pretty Noose
2. Rhinosaur
3. Ty Cobb
4. Never Named
5. Never the Machine Forever
6. No Attention
7. An Unkind

I think most would agree that these songs rock, and not in a weak way. As
a matter of fact they rock in a very Soundgarden sort of way, and I don't
think one could mistake these songs as being done by any other band. I
would even go as far to challenge folks to privately e-mail me if they can
come up with a release by any other band in the last year that includes
seven songs that rock with the same intensity as those (I realize I'm in
the realm of opinions now, and I fear a flood of e-mail!).

My point is this: BMF rocks differently, not less intensely, than LTL.
SU rocks differently than BMF. DOTU rocks differently than SU...see what I
mean? Everyone has preferences, but I would beg to differ with anyone who
thought the above songs were "weak," even compared with Rusty Cage,
Outshined, Let Me Drown, Gun, etc. If SG released the above seven tunes as
an ep, I doubt many people would be thinking "sell-out" or "wussies." To
me, all of DOTU sounds like Soundgarden (and I personally think songs like
Dusty & Tighter and Tighter rock as hard as the seven above), but there is
a texture to the material that's different than anything they've done thus
far. They've managed to sound fresh, creatively approach songwriting
AND still rock, not an easy task. And to me each album contains those
qualities, albeit the formula is a little different each time. Down on the
Upside strikes me as a brilliant rock and roll album, with plenty of those
sounds and hooks and turns of phrases that drew me to the band in the
first place. And some fresh surprises too. If you don't like it as much
LTL, BMF, or SU, you can surely agree there are inescapably classic
Soundgarden moments on DOTU, can't you?

Well, in my opinion, there really isn't any *best* Soundgarden album. I think
that all of their releases are different, so it's like comparing apples to
oranges, per se.
With each album, their sound is a little more different, and though there are
similarities, I think that *every* Soundgarden album has a unique flavor.
Personally, when I am depressed, I listen to the mellow stuff, like SU or
DOTU. When I am hyper, I like the heavier albums, like Ultramega OK, or
Louder Than Love. Basically, I think that everything Soundgarden releases is
just as good as the previous release.

that's easily far and away JCP. not only was it written by all four
band members, but it just defines their entire work in that one 5+
minute song. it's amazing, it just sums it all up. even just the
guitar riff itself. or the drum beat. or the bass work. or the vocals
and lyrics... it's the definitive SG song, IMHO.

I have a really basic question that I should already have the answer to
but in SG's liner notes, what does "Music: Shepherd; Lyrics: Cornell"
mean exactly? Does it mean that, for example, Ben created the song
and Chris is simply doing the vocals? Or maybe Ben created the music
itself, but Chris created the vocals? On "Never the Machine Forever"
it says "Music and Lyrics: Kim Thayil" and he obviously didn't do the
vocals. See, I feel really foolish in asking a question like this, since
I have been a fan for a number of years now; I really should know this answer
by now..but if y'all could help me out, that'd be cool.

Hi there everyone! I was watching First Cut last Saturday morning (all

Then they said something
like, "Next week on First Cut, we'll be taking a look at the band
Soundgarden, and how they're
doing after being together for ten years."
Just thought you'd like to know. So even if you're not the morning

is of coarse an exception!
So, catch Soundgarden this Saturday, on First Cut, which is either at
9:30, or 10:00?

Okay, bye.

Alot of people have been saying that Rhinosaur is going to be the next
single off DOTU. I'm not saying this is going to be the next single or if
there is going to be another single at all, but I also heard Rhinosaur on
the radio. So for you people who think Rhinosaur is going to be the next
single then there's more proof for ya. As for the top.....uhhh I was
bored.

That great bastion of Aussie journalism, the Sunday Mail, reported in last
Sunday's paper that Australian band Powderfinger are having a hard time
cracking the American scene...

What I want to query is that it is rumoured that the band has signed with
"the management behind Soundgarden" as written in the paper, or Susan Silver
Management as I would interpret it. Does anybody know if this is certain?
Judging by the bands that I know are managed by Susan Silver, she has great
taste in artists...

Do many Americans on this list know/like/dislike Powderfinger? E-mail me
privately if you have any comments on the band...

>> What do you all think is the most *definitive* Soundgarden song?
>
>Jesus Christ Pose. It has 4 members collabarating
>musically, and sonically it is the most superior piece that they have
>ever written.

I would second that, possibly for a few extra reasons as well. It has the
riffwork that I love Soundgarden for, Matt Cameron showing off his talents,
bass thumping, Chris showing off his impressive vocal range and skills, and
is not following any set verse/chorus/verse/chorus pattern with a bridge
thrown in for good measure.

However, it is lacking in one area that I would need it to have for it to be
(IMHO) the truly definitive Soundgarden - it has no abstract time measures
nor any change in time signatures...

For this reason, I need to nominate a second song - Rusty Cage. It has many
of the features of JCP, but it's not quite the same...

- ---------------------------------------------------------

>Am I the *only* one to consider DOTU the best soundgarden album ever?
>
>/martin.

Maybe...there's nothing *wrong* with the album, as such, it is as grand
musically as any of the other albums (IMHO) and shows some progression in
the band. I personally view it as a matter of timing - the value of an album
is always a function of both how good it is (objectively and subjectively)
and when it is released. I was after something different from the DOTU album
- - this was highlighted by the fact that almost all singles released from
DOTU were nowhere near my favourite tracks from the album. Given a different
time frame or at least time to settle in, maybe it will or could've jumped
BMF and Superunknown as my two favourite Soundgarden albums, but not yet...

Ooh, and I can hide behind a wall of technicality now that I've picked up
the "official" guitar tab for the entire DOTU album!! :> Bliss...

- ---------------------------------------------------------

>RE Music publishing companies
>On interview, Chris said (jokingly) that it was a humor contest between his
>"you make me sick, I make music" and Kim's "in one ear and out your mother"

It even extends futher than that - most bands make up dinky names for their
music publishing companies...

Would anyone like to shed some light as to what the meaning of the Red Hot
Chili Pepper's music publishing company "MOEBETOBLAME" might mean? I can't
quite figure it out...

Most boring name goes to Oasis - "Oasis Music Limited"!!

- ----------------------------------------------------------

>RE: Role models.
>Are rock stars(for lack of a better word) role models??

I think there's an automatic process - people in the spotlight were not
necessarily expecting to be there. They're not perfect - they have no desire
to be role models, but because of the popularity, it suddenly becomes
expected that they must be careful about there every action for fear of
"copycats".

I never understood this Lemmings approach - the idea that somebody you
consider to be a role model has to be copied. Are people that crazy? [Don't
answer that - I know what the answer is!!]

>Does anyone feel that Kim,
>Chris ,Matt or Ben are role models for them either as a musician or in a
>personal way? If they are.... how so???

They are role models to me in the sense that I would like to have their
individual musical skills and talents, but I still wouldn't want to be any
one of them, in spite of how much I like them. Rather, I'd prefer to proudly
display their influence in my own musicianship...

>BUTT I also admire i.e. Kim as a person. I like his sense of humor
>and his habit of saying what he thinks even if it is not necessarily the
>"right" thing to say or what someone might want to hear.

I think you summed it up nicely, as did somebody else, Toni, in regards to
the way I look at bands...as long as a person reaches some "baseline" level
of decency, then the details of their personal lives, as interesting as they
are for understanding the facets of a band, are only trivia in relation to
their music. It's harder (but not impossible) for me to like a band when the
members of the band, for example, denigrate something personal to me, or
have some rather, ahem, nasty personal habits/opinions...

- ----------------------------------------------------------

>Has anyone else noticed that Kim doesn't look like he's aged a day since
>'89??

Didn't you know? Kim's a prototype cyborg, developed by the FBI to determine
whether artificial intelligence extends to musicianship, rock music and the
ability to look cool :> Kim's beard actually acts as an electrical conductor
for recharging his batteries - hence, if he begins to feel tired in a
concert, he raises his guitar to his chin. He looks like he's playing his
guitar with his beard, but is actually powering up through his guitar...

Hey everybody.=20

I found a picture the other day you all MUST SEE BEFORE YOU DIE, or you w=

die an unfulfilled life. No, it is not of Ben's beautiful ass in tight
leather pants - though that would be second on my must-see list. This is =
a
picture of our boys with Pearl Jam in some big, ugly room at Lollapalooza
'92. This has to be the most *hilarious* picture of Matt I have *ever* se=

I laughed the ninth time I saw it - and I'll laugh the nintieth time, I'm
sure. My only complaint about this picture is Ben. :-P He's sitting in t=

very back in a white shirt with a big black question mark on it with the =
most
horrible haircut I've ever seen on a guy. I'm pretty sure it's him, anywa=

Despite the Ben's haircut, I think this is probably one of my favorite

ou
have, DO IT AGAIN. You won't be let down. Here's the address:

I want to know if this is happening to any other listers:

For the past year (or however long it's been since DOTU came out), I CANNOT
seem to get into anything else but Soundgarden. Constantly I rotate through
my collection (whic is kinda big) and that's 98% of what I listen too.

I got into Collective Soule for a couple of weeks. The first Janes Addiction
Album, Hater & occasionally I roll some Pearl Jam, Nirvana, AIC, or the Trees
just because I get a hair, but it never lasts, and not one day goes by that I
don't listen to SG incessantly.

I literally cannot get into anything else.

Anyone else goin' through this?

Howdy!

ME: "My email is like -- huh-huh -- broken and stuff." I'm starting
to hate this provider. It seems that as soon as I get caught up on my
digest reading, they decide to "UPGRADE" the system. Yeah,
whatever... What it really means is that I don't get any incoming
mail for a week and they still see fit to charge me. ANYWAY!!!

RE: Keep your head down

I look up to Ben Shepherd as a major role model in my life. I think
that Benlover will back me up on this: Ben Shepherd and Lyle Lovett
are the two greatest songwriters of my time. When Ben writes a song,
you can tell it's a Ben song, but it's totally unique. This goes
along with some of the Hiro commentary... I'd go as far as to say
that Ben-Won is the number one driving influence of the band FAR AND
AWAY. In fact, they should rename DOTU --> "Ben's Way." Sure, he
didn't write all the songs, but the bulk has "his" sound. Of course
it's SOundgarden's sound, but listen to "Down Undershoe" off of Hater
and you have that same "Pretty Noose" slash "Burden in my Hand" thing
that's kicking AOR radio's ass right now. Back to what I was saying.
I DO admire Ben for reasons that many of you won't get. I think that
there's a lot there that many fans don't understand. Maybe it would
be pretentious for me to say this, but I identify with the man and
when I relate his actions to my actions it helps me understand his
motivation. As if I'd really have done the same thing. I'm not going
to name any incidents or names... but you know what I mean. Maybe he
has a sixth sense for stupid people??? I digress! >love ya Toni<
Basically I think he might be a little hot headed but what you see on
stage is not real.
It is an act. That I'm convinced of. Now, follow me to another
subject: I think of DOTU as an answer to the questions of
Superunknown. In particular you can compare the lyrics of "The Day I
Tried to Live" and "No attention" especially the part about stealing
begars change and having a handfull of change. It's like I get the
feeling that Superunknown was the perfect title for their album. You
get the feeling that Soundgarden was just thrust out into the unknown
without a friend (and bound to die alone... har har har) and told to
"go." That had to fuck with them. Actually, I mean to say that
Cornell's lyrics are almost like a dialogue between the two albums.
What do you all think? BTW: anyone want to count up the number of
times the word "mirror" is used in the Soundgarden discography?
Jesus... Thanks, even though you guys fight like sissies, I really
look forward to seeing this list and I'm bummed right now.

PS Anyone responding PLEASE forward me a copy so I can read and/or respond!

Hey there kiddies,

I don't know what's up, but I haven't gotten a digest for four days.
Seth on spring break or what? I am, but as usual it's pretty lame. Any
word on HYPE yet? Like I said, from the video end, I am clueless.

Just got Live's "Secret Samadhi" on vinyl for an early Easter gift.
It's on white vinyl double disc with a poster. Bootylicious.

Sorry, not a whole lot of SG stuff to post. Perhaps if they would get
off their collective butts and tour again????

Hey Sommsters,

I realize that the list isn't up yet, but still I must write in and tell
you all about what I bought yesterday. On Monday, I went bargain hunting
in Seattle, and I got, Soundgarden on vinyl: Screaming Life EP and
UltraMega OK. I also went to Subpop MegaMart and they had Screaming Life,
the Book with pix by Charles Peterson for $35. I decided to wait. But
then, when I went to the University Bookstore I found it for $17.50. I was
so excited! And it even came with a CD, which goes like this:

Green River - Ain't nothing to do
Mudhoney - No One has
Nirvana - Negative Creep
Tad - Ritual Device
Soundgarden - Entering
Screaming Trees - Flashes
Beat Happening - Midnight-a-go-go
Seaweed - Selfish
Fastbacks - What's It Like

It's a great CD and I suggest that you should all get it, if not for the
other bands in it, but just to see Soundgarden in this great book, with
great pix.

Later,
   Rachel
