Hi folks, just came home from the marilyn manson concert here in Hawaii. They
were playing at a
3000 max venue, they started 1 hour after schedule ,and were shut down by
the fire dept 40 min
into their set!! The venue was filled to about 3500,very Hot,very angry, but
they rocked!!
When the fire dept shut the concert down,I was worried that maybe a riot
might start, so my husband
and I dug out right away! These are the same promoters that brought
Soundgarden to Hawaii,but of course
they played a much bigger venue. It seems that Hawaii has been bad luck so
far for the non mainstream

I need to know minor details that will stump the contestants, like what kind

I'd be *very* grateful if anyone could give me some real hard questions to

Hey guys,

Hopefully I can deviate from the bootleg mess that has been plaguing us for
weeks now by steerting the thread in this direction:

SOUNDGARDEN - KOZIK

If you remember about a month ago someone posted about this incredible KOZIK
poster advertising SG's last show at the Mercer arena, well incredibly it was
only $10.

Now, if that wasn't enough, I ordered it & rec'd it in the mail last week.
Not only is it a genuine KOZIK for only $10, but the damn thing is AN
AUTOGRAPHED LIMITED EDITION!!!!!!!!!!!! I got #483 (I think) of 680. I was
just going to tack it to the wall until I saw that, now I think I'm going to
have to get it framed and preserve it. You can find it on the TILT page & it
is well worth 10 bucks.

Well I just got finished listening to Waiting On the Upside. It was a pretty
cool CD considering that you can't hear them all that well but hey, it's
Soundgarden, right!!! Even though it was the last show of the Lollapalooza
tour it sounded pretty much like the shows they put on after. BHS was damn
cool because it was just Chris and that was one of my favorite songs they did
on the tour because it was different from the norm (not to mention Waiting
For the Sun)!!! I didn't get to stay at Lolla for the whole SG show because
of circumstances that were out of my hands and it pisses me off, but oh well,
it's over and in the past. I have a question for those of you who have this
or have heard it: what the hell is Chris (I think it's Chris) saying at the
very end of Rusty Cage? Maybe someone can shed some light on this for me.
Yes, I bought a bootleg and it got me thinking with all the talk on the
list. I don't own any studio recorded bootlegs, such as SP or FDR, but I do
own 3 live recordings. Anyway, my point being that if the record company
sees that fans buy bootlegs of any sort why don't they release them so the
band will be getting the money. I got into a discussion with my mom the
other day over bootlegs because she asked me where I got them and if the band
got any money from the sales. I answered her questions and then asked if all
the recordings of live Jimmy Buffett shows (she's a big die-hard fan) were
put out by his record label and she said yes. Why then doesn't A&M record
shows of SG or for any other band on their label and put them out there for
the public to buy. That way we won't be ripping off the band. Do you get
what I'm getting at?!?!? I mean with all this talk I thought about sending a
check for the amount that I bought my bootlegs for to SG (who I would send it
to I don't know) so they could profit from it. Stupid idea I know but I
haven't done it because I'm running REALLY LOW on funds. All I'm saying is
is why doesn't someone that has some pull over this matter see that some fans
want more and what would it hurt to record some shows and put them out there
for the public to enjoy. Comments are very welcome but please, if this is
going to start a Cold War then don't bother!! Enough said. I'll shut up now
and leave. Thanks for taking the time to read this, if you did!!! Take care
and be sweet!!

Stay Cool,
Kelly :)

I think the MAIN problem with this is, is the marketing and money it takes
to actually put out an album. And A&M, being A&M will want to support it
(Like Geffen and the last two Nirvana live recordings). You also want to
see decent material out there, not shows that the band hate. If I remember
correctly, Jimmy Buffett has his own label, can pretty much run things
without much advertising, as well as a REALLY stable fan base something
which Soundgarden doesn't have. Why doesn't the band put one together?
Quite frankly they may not want to. Many of us actually HATE live albums,
live recordings, and don't want to hear them, and they may hate them too.
Does that mean they support the selling of bootlegs. Not necessarily.

Then there's problems with compilation albums, getting the rights, editing,
censoring for release, quality, etc etc etc. Meaning you can't just
release a double CD show anytime you want to.

And that won't stop boots anyways. Boots still exist of Greatful Dead no
matter how many live CDs they release, and the same is for Blues Travelor,
Jimmy Buffett, Pearl Jam, and ANY band who has released live shows out
there. So I don't think you can neccessrily fool yourself into thinking
that if Soundgarden would release a live album then everybody would stop
buying boot CDs.

Quite frankly the people who can somehow justify buying them now, will
justify buying them later no matter what. The pull of new-instant product
will drawn them in no matter how hard they try to resist it.

There's no way to solve this problem. I do wish Soundgarden would do
something what Pearl Jam does: doing an international radio broadcast every
tour so anybody can hear it without having to either trade or buy a bootleg
of it.
But nothing can stop CD bootlegs, but it still doesn't mean we have to give
into them.

That's autographed by Kozik, not by Soundgarden. They're also

IMHO, the best tune Hiro ever wrote for SG was 'I Awake', I know alot of
people hate this song but I never understood why. It has got to be the
most haunting tune off of Louder Than Love. I think this song conjures
up the feeling of a nervous breakdown - very moving.

As for bass work, I've always been partial to 'Little Joe'.

Well, I keep reading that the list is in dire need of some humor, and I
must say that after reading today's and yesterday's digests, I
wholeheartedtly agree. So, as I promised a long time ago, here's what
Seventeen has to say about our beloved boy:
< picture of the cover of Noise from the Underground >

"Anything that starts with a half-naked photo of Soundgarden's gorgeous
Chris Cornell and includes the kissy-face Kurt-'n'-Courtney cover shot
from an ancient (in rock years) issue of Sassy has got to make you put
this one on your must-read list. Ooooh!-the hipness drips off the
pages!"

Well, there ya go. I hope you all enjoyed that and realize that the
reason you really should buy this "hip" book is because a semi naked
picture of CC adorns the front (as if we haven't seen that
before...someone should send these people Motorvision). Yes, forget
about the bands inside, not to mention the things you just might learn
if you open the book. Oooooooh, I think I'll run out and tear the cover
off...:)

Hey kids!

In light of the PRE-MILLENIUM TENSION that seems to have affected the list
lately, I've decided we need to ease up a little bit, and I think I have just
the solution: a contest. Yes, that's right, FREE SHIT. Everybody loves free
shit, right? Well, if you are the winner of my contest, here's the bootleg SG
vids you can choose from (copies, of course, but good quality):

* Seattle Lollapalooza 1992
* Greek Theatre, Berkeley CA, 1994
* Paris, France, opening for GN'R  (pay-per-view)
* Japan, Feb. 94: Interviews, Videos & Live (includes JCP vid!)

So how do you get one of these cool vids? Well, nothins for free, babe, so
you're gonna hafta earn it! Here's what you gotta do:
I'm gonna give you some lyrics (SG, of course) and you gotta tell me what
song this line is from, and where that song can be found. Fair enough? I'd
also dig it if you told me why you think you deserve the prize! Yeah, I have
no life. Humor me, and you might get somethin extra.

Here's the line:

"IN YOUR MOUTH...I MIGHT FEEL THE SERPENT'S KISS..."

Recognize that? Well send me an answer then, goofball!

RULES OF THE GAME: All SOMMSters and their family and pets are eligible. All
entries must be submitted (privately) by March 25, 1997 at 10:42 pm. Only one
entry per SOMMSter, please, unless you have multiple personality disorder, or
a really large ego, in which case I'll allow 2. Must have an IQ of at least
21 to enter. Allow 2-3 wks for delivery. Always wear a condom.

GOOD LUCK!!
Leslie

P.S. I'd also like to trade if anyone is interested, and I have many more
      boots from other bands! =)

as far as I know, matt rarely sings on soundgarden records, even
though he regularly adds his voice to chris' on stage. I have a feeling
that in the past ben has laid down extra vocal tracks in the studio (is it
just me or is he humming during 'head down'?), but for the most part chris
doubles or even triples his own vocal parts in order to get the necessary
sound for such songs as (but definitely not limited to) 'let me drown' and
'never named'.

first off, I'd like to say that I saw _star wars_ yesterday. not
that it has anything to do with soundgarden. I just thought it wasn't a
bad little movie :)

I came across some rather odd (or disgusting, depending upon your
perspective) information last week. while killing time in my local
bookstore, I noticed an autobiography written by our favourite
body-piercer and daredevil jim rose. I thought it might be interesting to
see if he mentioned soundgarden anywhere amongst the pages of human
dartboards and lightbulbs. of course, there was an entire chapter on
lollapalooza '92; much of which dealt with rose's enormous liking of
soundgarden and their music. cool trivia for the day: on the kts boot of
sg at lolla, the announcer who screams "all right phoenix, this is your
blah blah blah..." is in fact jim rose himself. cool, eh?

anyhow, I thought that the book might either prove or disprove all
those urban myths about whether chris and eddie vedder took part in bile
drinking contest over the course of the '92 tour. well, if mr. rose is to
be believed, it seems that this is no myth.

the story goes something like this (turn away if body fluids turn
you off): chris turns up on the stage during a sideshow performance
involving rose and matt "the tube" crowley on stage 2. matt the tube's
forte lies in swallowing stuff and then pumping it back out his nose and
mouth via a long plastic tube. chris is, by rose's way of thinking, bored
with the monotony of the tour and is looking for some fun. he proceeds to
collect bile from mr. crowley's tube in a glass and then takes a big swig.

apparently, this wasn't the only time that chris drank from such a
fountain on the lolla tour. rose also recollects that many other notables
followed the bile-drinking trend, namely eddie (I can't remember if it
turned into a contest or not), al jorgensen of ministry, perry farrell and
a bunch of other touring buddies. comments?

the person who posted that eddie was the winner of the bile beer drinking

Well, this discussion has certainly turned ugly. While I agree that
trading tapes is better than buying bootlegs, I think that in the zeal
to organize this tape tree we are forgetting something important. To my
knowledge (please correct me if I am wrong) Soundgarden does not allow
taping at their concerts.

The ethical base of the tape tree idea rests not only on the trading
rather than sale of tapes but also on the band authorizing the taping
under the assumption that the tapes will be traded not sold. So if
Soundgarden does not support this open taping aren't we being a bit
hypocritical here? Is it more ethical to trade unauthorized tapes than
to buy them? Several people have pointed out that certain artists object
to bootlegs because they lose control over the quality of the work being
taped and distributed. How would this tape tree under discussion justify
copying material the band may feel to be an inferior performance, or one
they would prefer not to be distributed on tape?

IMO this whole childish argument is totally pointless until SG authorize
taping of their shows because until then, no matter how honorable your
intentions, you are still distributing unauthorized recordings. If we
are truly talking about "ethics" here then that too is intrinsically
wrong.

I agree totally with Enrique's post:

> i guess my point is that some official releases are made to take advantage
> of the fact that fans want every song. therefore taking more of our money
> for less. i dont know if it's soundgarden's or A&M's fault, and i don't
> care. i'll buy them anyway, what the hell, but if i can save some money
> buying a bootleg instead of 4 or 5 not so good singles or whatever, i will.

I too felt betrayed when BMF/SOMMS was released, but I chose to buy the
new release too. And the whole "singles" releases thing pisses me off
because it is clearly a way to weasle even more money out of true fans.
Personally I think if this were an issue the band really cared about
they would work to do something to discourage us from buying bootlegs,
like allowing taping or releasing more live recordings and bootlegs in a
more reasonable format. I know these things are not only their decision,
but surely they have a great deal of input into these subjects. I'll bet
they don't much care because I think they pretty much support personal
freedom (to choose, for example, how we spend our money).

Just one more thing (sorry this is so long). It amuses me that the
company (read that "corporate") line is being spouted by some people who
I don't recall speaking out against bootlegs in the not so distant past.
I am not referring to Caryn here, because if I remember correctly she
has consistently argued against bootlegs. Nor am I talking about people
who are relatively new to the list. But I've been on this list for over
a year now and from the time I joined, Fresh Deadly Rareties has been a
topic of discussion. In the past, though, it was people looking for it,
people happy they had found it, people raving about it (just for the
record, I don't own this one) -- all positive stuff. Now its FDR =
bootleg = (tsk, tsk) B-A-D-D-D-D. Certainly some people may have changed
their minds about bootlegs being OK, but some of it sounds suspiciously
like corporate ass-kissing to me.

We all have our own opinions about bootlegs, and most of us live where
we are free to spend our money pretty much as we choose. And since
Soundgarden does not allow taping, maybe we can move beyond this now?

Subject: Cornell vs. Corrigan, HAH!

Well, with this being my first post, I thought I would extend a
comparison of Soundgarden as opposed to that of the Smashing
Pumpkins.

It seems to me that every time a group or panel or magazine or MTV
compare bands that hold the "alternative" label, they always rave
about how great the Pumpkins are. Well, here are some interesting
facts about their vocalist, Billy Corrigan.
1. At a bar, in which our beloved Kim Thayil was partaking of his
usual brewski, Corrigan entered the place, clad in a superman
t-shirt. After a series of questions which contained a little humor,
Corrigan ran out of the place, bawling his eyes out.
2. During a concert in Nasville, as on the MTV awards show, the
Smashing Pumpkins sucked pretty bad. So bad that noone in the entire
arena was moving, dancing, moshing, or singing along. Shortly after,
Corrigan screamed, to his own fans, and I quote: "You're all a bunch
of cats and dogs! Go home to all your mothers!"

Now, it just seems to me that that shows two things about SP, not
only are they crybabies ( Thayil told him he was just kidding), but
they also don't give a damn about their fans. As far as Cornell is
concerned, I've always felt that the best songwriters right from
inside, not from some stupid tree that even the singer probably
doesn't know what it is. (Cherub Tree)

Cornell, in my opinion, is the best songwriter of our age. A
symphony even does renditions of Black HS. And it takes alot of
talent and patience to come up with SG's weird riffs and to put
lyrics to them.

Seasons, perhaps the most underrated song affiliated w/ Cornell, is
nothing short of a masterpiece. The things that go through Cornell's
head when he writes are unimaginable. I think Corrigan just sits
around and comes up with things to write about.

I bet he walked out of his shanty one night and said to himself,
"It's a nice night. Think I'll write a song about it. Thus,
"Tonight, Tonight."

To each his own, naturally. I like one song by SP, the song off the
Singles Soundtrack. But I'm sorry, Cornell along with Kim, Matt,
and Ben, are so overrated that it really pisses me off. I think
that SG's songs will stay with future generations for a long time,
much like Led Zeppelin. As for SP, they will end up where they
started, at the end of a needle. Later.

well, i'd heartily disagree. when i first moved back to the states, the
first thing i did was buy all the pearl jam bootleg cd's i could get my
grubby little hands on. i have always bought bootlegs, my feeling being 'i
have multiple copies of everything ELSE by this band' and didn't see
anything wrong with it. 5 years later, i want nothing to do with them.
there was a path between point A and point Z -- i didn't wake up one day and
say, 'ohmigod, bootlegs are wrong, i don't want soundgarden/pearl
jam/whoever to hate me'. it was a thought process, an experiential thing.
it was being ripped off by bad quality boot cd's, it was watching pj
broadcast every concert in '95 on their pirate radio station, and then watch
those shows being released on cd for $70 and up.

and it was *talking* with other fans and friends about it, about the
inherent contradictions (and the not-so-inherent ones), listening to other
viewpoints, and then coming to the conclusion that i personally won't do it,
for reasons that personally make sense to me.

one of the things that is wonderful about human nature and about the
internet as well is the process of education. you think one way, and you
act one way, and then you start to hear other viewpoints that make you
question your own viewpoint.

my point is, the people whom kathie speaks of might just have changed their
mind due to the heated, open and honest discussions we have had about
bootlegs on this list. in fact, i happen to know several people who have
changed their tune because of discussions here. i also know of several
people who are more confused than ever, and several people who are going to
go right along buying everything with the word SOUNDGARDEN on it. ;->

as for the corporate ass-kissing part of it -- ah, gimme a break. make a
statement and name names and log this 'suspicious' change of opinion, or
stop making groundless allegations.

hi everyone. . .

>humanitarians outside of the spotlight (including chris).

just what exactly did you mean by this?

>do you all think that Sg played better on their superunknown tour
>or their dotu tour?

well i really can't compare, b/c i only saw them play once on the su
tour, and 3 xs on the dotu tour. all 3 dotu tour shows were much
better than the one su tour show (at roseland) b/c 2 were outdoors
(lolla) and one was at a club - so everything was so much better -
atmosphere, etc. if i hadn't been there to see Sg, the roseland show
really would've kinda sucked. it just wasn't the ideal place to see
them play - but that doesn't mean they didn't play well. every time
i've seen Sg live they've played exceptionally well - but the 2 best
shows i've ever seen were lolla in ny and the show at the electric
factory in philly - and they were both on the dotu tour, so... i just
wish i'd gotten to see them play more than once on the su tour. but i
think the dotu tour appealed more to me b/c by then i had gotten to
know their music so much better, and i had a lot more favorite Sg
songs, many of which they played.

>i have always wondered what this means exactly. "you make me
>hate i make music."

i think it means the basically the same thing "you make me sick i
make music" does - it's chris' sarcastic side showing. i really think
it's very funny - and maybe he meant it to be, or maybe it really is
serious. you can take it either way - and *i* think he meant it to be
taken both ways. if you do take it seriously, it think he's directing it
at society and saying that his hatred and disgust inspire some of his
music, or that he uses music to help him escape his feelings of hate
and disgust, or escape the people who make him feel those things.

that's it for now. oh, wait! tonight's the oscars! the grammy's all
over again. instead of working on a term paper which i'm really
behind on, or something constructive, i'll watch just to get a glimpse
of my favorites and see what everyone's wearing, and of course i
won't worry about who's gonna win, b/c it doesn't matter, it's just a
stupid statue that you don't even *win*, the academy *gives* it to
you... and i remind myself that throughout history many people w/
no talent at all have won - just b/c of politics, or sympathy votes, or
sheer stupidity... but then for some strange reason, when my
favorites don't win, it bugs me anyway. go figure. ;)

Subject: down the sidewalks of that city...

yes, this is just another one of those (long) posts extolling the
virtues of a drummer like matt cameron. I was bored last night, so I came
up with some of this. comments from those who play the drums (I'm a
frustrated drummer myself) would be appreciated.

well, we all know that matt rocks. yeah, what he does during
'jesus christ pose' is great. man, that 'wooden jesus' song rocks. but
sometimes I wonder about his other songs, songs that don't often get
mentioned here on the list but songs that just might be as good as the
ones usually touted as his best. mayhap matt is not just a one-trick pony?
<joking>

to me, matt's drumming is all about balance. not only in terms of
his effortless moves between the pounding of 'gun' to the grace of 'mind
riot', but in that his drumming style simply radiates balance. I don't
know how many takes his drum tracks need (and I'm guessing not many), but
he seems to nail *exactly* what the song demands each and every time. his
two sticks (not to mention his two feet) are always in the right place.
his bass drum *always* drops in at the right moment. he is not sparse or
unimaginative in his playing style by any means, yet his drumming features
only what the song calls for. to me, matt's drumming is not about
percussion or simply keeping the beat, it is about *music*.

anyway, here are some of my thoughts on a couple of soundgarden
tunes that you might know <smiling>. comments would be appreciated.

room a thousand years wide - when I first heard bmf I pretty much
ignored the second side. let's face it, I was young and songs like
'outshined' and 'rusty cage' were more immediate than 'mind riot'. but now
I would definitely count 'room...' as one of my all-time favourite
soundgarden songs. part of the reason is because it has little to do with
chris (at least in terms of writing), only because I'm interested in the
songs chris *doesn't* write. but the major reason is because matt wrote
the music. I find that of all the songs the band records, his are perhaps
the largest in terms of power, they just seem more "there" (lovers of
'mailman' will agree). I find that this song in particular is completely a
drummer's groove; matt sits back and snares the rest of the band to death.
but what really drags me into this song is the section running from
about 0:51-1:04, the bridge between verse one and two. it is probably
something very simple to him and other accomplished drummers, but the way
he plays the ride cymbal with his right hand and alternates between the
hi-hat, snare and crash with his left chews me up every time. and then he
mixes it up between 2:42-3:05 with more rolls and crashes. beautiful.

karaoke - when I first heard this b-side, I got it all wrong. the
intro and outro to this song are not just noise. maybe the guitars are
simply (I use that word lightly) strumming furiously, but what matt does
with his cymbals, snare and toms is amazing. he seems to be hitting each
drum simultaneously. is it possible he has trained some sort of octopus or
something and is keeping it under his coat?

bleed together - this is the song that made me believe matt's arms
and legs work independently of one another. again, the drumming is spot
on, but in the sections I'll call verse 'b' and 'd' ("I know you're
half afraid...") matt is hitting the bass drum and (probably) second tom
at the same time while alternating with hi-hat hits and double openings. I
know that he doesn't play with a hi-hat on his right-hand side, so I
imagine that he changes hands here, much like the end of 'rusty cage'. but
it isn't his hands that amaze me during this, it is his feet. surely he
can't just do this without thinking about it?

overfloater - nothing really specific about this song is better
than the whole; I just love the sound of his bass drum. it is so sexy it
reminds me of john bonham's own bass during 'when the levee breaks'. btw,
doesn't his drum part at the beginning of 'dusty' remind of you of the
late great bonzo?

pretty noose - a song that has been derided here, but if you can't
appreciate the drum part you must be deaf. matt worked out this pattern
after about fifteen minutes with the song, leading me to believe that he
really is a genius (stop me if I go to far and ask matt to be my
betrothed). and I know that this may sound like blasphemy to some, but is
it possible that matt used an <gasp> overdub here? I've listened to it
closely, and the section running from roughly 3:32-3:42 sounds insane.
unless matt is using some weird one-handed roll or is rolling on the bass
drum he must have three arms because I don't know how it is possible to
roll on the toms while playing your ride cymbal.

tighter and tighter - 3:24-4:00. it's mind numbing. so what if
danny carey keeps time on his toms during 'jimmy'? try playing this and
see what comes up. (I was only kidding about danny. I have a lot of
respect for him).

cold bitch - this is a way cool piece of music, and was somewhat
ahead of its time in terms of soundgarden's musical evolution. during an
interview kim notes that on most songs on _bmf_ there is an obvious place
for a solo and that's where it is. you know what is going to happen and
it happens. but on _superunknown_, the band tried to move away from this,
using vocals during guitar solos so that there was increased motion or
dynamics (see 'mailman'). but *this* song was written (?) and recorded
sometime during the _bmf_ sessions, so it preceded that record by at least
a year. but to get to the point, the part spanning 3:45-3:57 is imho the
most beautiful piece of music ever conceived by the band, because of this
notion of dynamics and movement. it only runs for a little more than ten
seconds, but the combination of chris' hurtling vocals, kim's
earth-shattering guitar and, of course, a brilliant drum fill by matt
gives me shivers each and every time I hear it.

never the machine forever - okay, this piece grates a little.
nothing against kim, but he has written better music in terms song
context. most of the parts are cool, but they sound a bit disjointed. the
flow between sections isn't quite there. but at any rate, I enjoy
listening to this song for the four distinct drumming parts and how matt
tackles each of them. matt has stated that one of the parts had to be
lengthened by four bars once initial recording of the song was complete.
can you pick where it is?

anyway, that's enough for this post. I've left a couple of other
contenders out ('down undershoe' and 'your saviour' among them) in the
interests of clarity and length. hopefully we will all get to hear more
drumming from matt on the next hater record and from his drumming twin tad
dameron on wwc's _declaration of conformity_ soon.
