Subject: Trouble in Somms

I've been reading the Somms list for close to a year & subscribed and
began posting on it myself a few months ago. Up until recently, it has
always been consistently informative, entertaining, & funny. But
lately, it's been like a war zone. Obviously with such a varied group
of individuals there will be many different opinions concerning each
list's topics, but why this sudden nasty turn in people's responses ?
We're all entitled to our own opinions and we all have the right to
disagree with each other, but can't we be a little bit more civil
about it ? After all, we all agree on at least one thing: a mutual
love of Soundgarden, that's what brings people to this list in the
first place. I don't know the average age of people who subscribe,
(I'm 27 ), but I'm guessing the majority are adults. This is'nt meant
as an insult, but I think it's time we all started acting like grown
ups and get back to what really matters-intelligent conversations
about Soundgarden. You can blast me privately at my e-mail address or
publicly on the list. I'm fully expecting it. Later, Kristen.

Man, that last digest I got was pretty much worthless. If you have a bug
up your ass about someone, how about trying private e-mail. I can't see
the point in wasting band width for trivial debates on Steves' video. I
have been taping concerts for almost ten years now and believe strongly in
preserving a live concert event for everyone to hear. I choose not to
sell, but if someone wants to, let em do so. I personally think it is not
cool to profit from something like this, but that's my own view point on
the issue.

let's get back to some cool SG discussion!!!!

i'm sorry, i couldn't help but wonder if mike's real last name isn't
really apple. . .

i think this guy set a record for the amount of "fuck's" in one post.

okay, i don't want to bash him anymore.

here's th sg content.
- -i think bootlegs suck, unless the band openly states that they support
these types of recordings (ie:Pearl Jam).

- -however, i do believe that most bootleggers charge inordinate amounts of
money for low-quality pieces of junk (at least here in canada, that is),
so i'll stick with what i have for now.

- -please don't reply to me telling me about all the great people you know
who can get great recordings, because i don't care. i'm not here to be
awe-inspired by other list members' connections or their own talents.

thank you.

isn't this a bit hypocritical?

and then...

all of this could've easily been said off of the list, as you say it should
be. these things don't concern everyone. i just found this quite
interesting.

Subject: Re: this whole bootleg and trading argument thing

Children, children! Now let's all just take a deep breath, go sit in
the sun for a few minutes and look at the daffodils or something. This
is not the appropriate place to question the level of another
subscriber's intelligence, substance abuse, or whatever (though I
suggest that anyone who can't tell the difference between even a second
and third generation videotape should see an eye doctor). Yes, the
bootlegging issue is very complex, considering the moral and legal
aspects, and needs to be discussed, but I think we've heard all the pros
and cons by now. I'm surprised someone hasn't dragged in the topic of
buying and selling promos. (Oh, God, I suppose I should have kept my
mouth shut). Anyway, God gave us each free will and a conscience. Use
them wisely.
I'll tell you what happened recently in my town. We had a record store
owner here who set up an entire (and quite flashy) aisle of bootleg cd's
at $45 a pop. (No, he didn't have any SG, but he had lots of PJ). Well,
someone got pissed off and called the cops. This guy (who apparently
got into trouble over some other scam in another state) is now in a
shitload of trouble. They raided his place and confiscated thousands of
dollars worth of bootlegs. He's still in business for the time being,
as he hasn't gone to trial yet, but he faces a possible grand jury. His
store is clean as a whistle now, in that respect, and people who know
what he's been up to (other nastiness I won't get into here besides the
bootlegging) won't give him the time of day, let alone any business.
Other stores now are wary of carrying anything of questionable origin.
It has had an impact in this immediate area, at least.

An interesting and perplexing (maybe not) question...

With all of the talk surrounding bootlegs and taping trees, what about
images? What are the specifics on downloaded images? Is it illegal to
save them to your drive?

The reason I'm asking is that I wanted to download some images and print
them out on T-shirt transfer paper to make a shirt. Whaddya say?

Thanks

Chris

Subject: the DOTU vinyl singles

hey sommsters,
just thought i'd throw in some SG related talk for this days digest
readers... = )
the singles issued on vinyl for DOTU (pn, bimh, butow) i now own two
of them, could have owned all. but, to you who own the PN red vinyl...
does yours look kinda funky too? cause i had the chance to buy both
this and BIMH (which i did purchase) but the PN just looked all sorts
of scratched and messed up. i made the guy play it, and he played
side A fully and then only gave me the last, oh 40-60 seconds of
Jerry Garcia, and it just made me wonder if it was really messed up.
hold it up to the light and it's kinda marble-ly looking, but even
when you slide you finger across you can't feel anything. i was so
confused and angry cause it was #1053 or 5000 and i really wanted it,
it was the only one. i was just wondering if any other SOMMSter had
this problem??? = ) probably not, right? = )
oh, the BIMH has bimh and Karaoke on the B side. really pretty. i
think the BIMH single far and away had the best artwork of any of
their singles ever. it was just a very beautiful job done by them. it
was (for those who don't know) white with silvery marbling. very nice.
 #1236 of 5000, if i remember right.

mind riot (rambling endlessly, i know, sorry!)

Subject: random stuff

hey all.

sorry, i know most of the stuff i'm responding to is about a week
old. <shrug>. i'm finally catching up on everything i missed.

>i have no idea what chris is driving now but a little bird told me
>that way back when he was really big on saving the planet he
>didn't drive anything but rode around on a bike...

i was just wondering why you said "way back when". don't you
think he still cares and is involved in efforts to save the
environment? i know that Sg contributed to that Surfrider

foundation benefit/compilation album a while back... and you can
tell by many of his lyrics that the state of this planet is still very =
much
a concern to him.

i was wondering if anyone out there knows what environmental,
etc. causes Sg is currently involved in... and if anyone out there
thinks that entertainers, etc. who are at the very least fairly affluent
have a responsibility to contribute to those sorts of causes? i think
that if they're good people, they would just naturally want to.

>although i am not an expert in egyptial culture and society i feel
>that the heavy metal fans' basic human rights have been violated...

of course their rights have been violated. and i thought your idea
about writing to the egyptian gov't was very interesting (and
noble)... and if anyone out there has given this any thought or plans
to go through w/ it, mail me.
but from what i know, egypt's gov't is a fairly progressive and
tolerant one, at least compared many other arab countries. i've got
distant relatives who live in syria, which is right now under
extremely authoritarian rule. the situation in egypt pales in
comparison to what syrians have to go through.
all i can think of regarding what happened in egypt is that this formerly=
relatively low-key fundamentalist group has got to the point where it =
has a lot of influence over the gov't and police. like i said - if anyone=
out there knows more about this, mail me.
anyway, it's an absolute disgrace what happened to those poor
people, and something should definately be done to help them.

as far as the whole "pop media" issue goes - who cares? the media
doesn't matter, the trendy bandwagon-ers don't matter. it's people
like us - the true fans - who *do* matter... and the bands that we
love know that, and respect us for it i'm sure.

and a while back people were talking about how it's the music - not
the band members' personal lives - that's most important. and i
agree completely... but still, there's nothing wrong w/ being curious
about the life of someone that you love and admire - it's just
natural. there's a big difference between wanting to know &
wondering, and invading someone's privacy or stalking.
